Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies were used to probe the stability and geometry of copper-seamed C-alkylpyrogallol[4]arene (PgC(n)Cu; n = 11, 13, 17) hexamers in solution. Novel structural features are observed at chain lengths greater than 10 in both solid and solution phase. Scattering data for the PgC(11)Cu and PgC(13)Cu in chloroform fitted as core-shell spheres with a total spherical radius of about 22.7 and 22.9 ? respectively. On the other hand, the scattering curve for the PgC(17)Cu hexamer at both 1% and 5% mass fractions in o-xylene did not fit as a discrete sphere but rather as a uniform ellipsoid. The geometric dimensions of the ellipsoid radii are 24 ? along the minor axis and 115 ? along the major axis. It is expected that an individual hexamer with heptadecyl chains would exhibit a uniform radius of ca. 24 ?. However, an approximate ratio of 1:5 between radii lengths for the minor axis and major axis is consistent with interpenetration of the heptadceyl chains of adjacent hexamers to form a single ellipsoidal assembly.  相似文献

The aqueous phase behavior of a series of complex salts, containing cationic surfactants with polymeric counterions, has been investigated by visual inspection and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The salts were alkyltrimethylammonium polyacrylates, CxTAPAy, based on all combinations of five surfactant chain lengths (C6, C8, C10, C12, and C16) and two lengths of the polyacrylate chain (30 and 6 000 repeating units). At low water contents, all complex salts except C6TAPA6000 formed hexagonal and/or cubic Pm3n phases, with the hexagonal phase being favored by lower water contents. The aggregate dimensions in the liquid crystalline phases changed with the surfactant chain length. The determined micellar aggregation numbers of the cubic phases indicated that the micelles were only slightly aspherical. At high water contents, the C6TAPAy salts were miscible with water, whereas the other complex salts featured wide miscibility gaps with a concentrated phase in equilibrium with a (sometimes very) dilute aqueous solution. Thus, the attraction between oppositely charged surfactant aggregates and polyions decreases with decreasing surfactant chain length, and with decreasing polyion length, resulting in an increased miscibility with water. The complex salt with the longest surfactant chains and polyions gave the widest miscibility gap, with a concentrated hexagonal phase in equilibrium with almost pure water. A decrease in the attraction led to cubic-micellar and micellar-micellar coexistence in the miscibility gap and to an increasing concentration of the complex salt in the dilute phase. For each polyion length, the mixtures for the various surfactant chain lengths were found to conform to a global phase diagram, where the surfactant chain length played the role of an interaction parameter.  相似文献

The influence of the hydrocarbon chain length in the formation of interdigitated and non-interdigitated bilayers in n -alkylammonium chlorides has been investigated for chain lengths varying between 8 and 14 carbon atoms. The formation of non-interdigitated bilayers during crystallization from solution is favoured for shorter chains whilst the interdigitated structure is predominant for larger chains. The thermodynamic parameters of the solid to solid phase transitions in the non-interdigitated samples depend on chain length showing the odd-even alternation that characterized homologous series in n -paraffins. The solid to liquid crystal phase transition temperatures and enthalpies show a linear dependence with the chain length. Spectrin molecules extracted from human blood ceil membrane have been examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) without using shadowing or staining procedures. A drop of the solution containing spectrin molecules was deposited on the freshly deaved mica substrate. After about 1 min, the residual solution was removed with a piece of filter paper. Afterwards the sample was imaged with a home-made atomic force microscope (AFM) in air in a constant force mode. The obtained AFM images revealed that the spectrin molecules prepared from the above procedures exhibit several kinds of structures as follows: (i) the compact rod-like spectrin heterodimers with a length of around 100 nm; (ii) bent or curved linear tetramers with a length of around 200 nm; (iii) somewhat curved spectrin hexamers, octomers or decamers with lengths of about 300, 400, or 500 nm; and (iv) high oligomers with a length above 1 000 nm.  相似文献

Acrylic acid-acrylamide copolymers were modified in DMSO solution by esterification with polyoxyethylene glycol monomethyl ethers of various chain lengths, via the isourea intermediate (from reaction with dicyclohexylecarbodiimide). A kinetic study shows that both propionic acid (as a model) and high molecular weight copolymers obey a second order law with an activation energy of 86 kJ/mol; the reactivity of the isourea is not dependent on its chain length. The grafted copolymers exhibit different viscometric behaviours in pure water or in CaCl2 solution, related to the lengths of the graft.  相似文献

Families of symmetric, ionic, tetracatenar mesogens are described based on a rigid, N-phenylpyridinium core, prepared as their triflimide, octyl sulfate and dodecyl sulfate salts for a range of terminal chain lengths. The mesomorphism of the individual series is described before a comparison is drawn between the different families and then more broadly with (i) neutral tetracatenar materials and (ii) related bis(3,4-dialkoxystilbazole)silver(I) salts. For the octyl and dodecyl sulfates and the related triflates reported earlier, a SmA phase is seen at shorter chain lengths, giving way to a Colh phase as the terminal chain lengthens. For the alkyl sulfate salts, an intermediate cubic phase is also seen and the terminal chain length required to cause the change from lamellar to columnar mesophase depends on the anion. Furthermore, there is an unexpected and sometime very large mesophase stabilisation seen on entering the columnar phase. All of the triflimide salts show a rectangular columnar (ribbon) phase.  相似文献

结合活性负离子聚合与原子转移自由基聚合(ATRP),采用机理转移法制备了一系列窄分布且分子量可控的星形梳状聚丁二烯-g-聚甲基丙烯酸甲酯接枝共聚物(SC-(PB-g-PMMA)).首先通过阴离子聚合,制备星形聚丁二烯,后经甲酸-过氧化氢原位环氧化对链中部分双键进行环氧化,再与原位生成2-溴异丁酸发生酯化反应,得到具有链中活性溴的星形大分子引发剂(SPB-Brn).然后,利用该大分子引发剂,采用CuCl/CuCl2/PMDETA催化体系,通过ATRP聚合单体MMA,合成出星形梳状SC-(PB-g-PMMA)聚合物.通过GPC,1H-NMR和FTIR等分析手段对合成的星形大分子引发剂及星形梳状聚合物进结构表征,证实得到目标产物,并同时研究了聚合物的热力学性质与溶液性质.  相似文献

The thermotropic behavior of poly(oxyethylene) cholesterol ether surfactants was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and small-angle X-ray scattering. Contrary to what is usually observed in conventional poly(oxyethylene)-type surfactant systems, poly(oxyethylene) cholesterol ether surfactants show a change of the fusion mechanism as the chain length is varied. For long chain lengths (n > or = 15) the usual solid-liquid transition is found, but for short chain lengths (n < or = 10) the transition goes through a birefringent lamellar phase. The appearance of this liquid crystal (LC) phase seems to be related with the predominance of the cholesterol part in the short chain polyoxyethylene surfactants. On the contrary, for long polyexyethylene chains the polymer gains in importance and only a solid crystalline structure is observed at low temperatures. An antiparallel packing structure with totally overlapped chains is found for both, the solid and the LC phase. The chains seem to be in a zigzag configuration, and only for the longest surfactant here studied (n = 30) a change of the chain configuration to a much shorter meander configuration is observed.  相似文献

A series of tetraguanidinium tetraphenylethene (TPE) arylsulfonates with different chain lengths was prepared via ionic self-assembly of tetraguanidinium TPE chloride and the respective methyl arylsulfonates. Liquid crystalline properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Tetraguanidinium TPE arylsulfonates with chain lengths of C8–C12 displayed hexagonal columnar mesophases over a broad temperature range, while derivatives with longer chains showed oblique columnar phases. In solution all compounds displayed aggregation-induced emission behaviour. Temperature-dependent luminescence spectra of the bulk phase of the tetraguanidinium TPE arylsulfonate with C14 side chains revealed a strong luminescence both in the solid state and the oblique columnar mesophase. The emission behaviour was rationalized by a unique combination of restriction of intramolecular rotation of the TPE core, Coulomb interaction between the guanidinium cations and π–π interactions of the anionic arylsulfonate moieties.  相似文献

A new series of metal complexes of silver(I) 1,12-dodecylene disulphate with 4-alkoxystilbazole ligands has been synthesized. These difunctional silver stilbazole complexes are mesomorphic, showing a nematic phase at short chain lengths and SmA and SmC phases at longer chain lengths. The single crystal X-ray structure of the hexyloxy homologue shows a polymerized arrangement of sulphate-bridged dimers.  相似文献

Solid-fluid and solid-solid phase equilibrium for binary mixtures of hard sphere chains modeling n-hexane, n-heptane, and n-octane has been calculated using Monte Carlo computer simulations. Thermodynamic integration was used to calculate the Gibbs free energy and chemical potentials in the solid and fluid phases from pure component reference values. A multiple stage free energy perturbation method was used to calculate the composition derivative of the Gibbs free energy. Equation of state and free energy data for the fluid phase indicate ideal solution behavior. Nonideality is much more significant in the solid phase with only partial solubility of shorter chains in the longer chains and essentially no solubility at the other end of the composition range. The miscibility decreases with increasing chain length difference between the components. For the model of n-hexane/n-octane mixtures solid--solid phase separation has been observed directly in some of the simulations, with the components segregating between the layers of the solid structure. The behavior is similar to that seen in some binary n-alkane mixtures with longer chain lengths but comparable chain length ratios between the components. Such phase separation, although indicated thermodynamically, is not seen directly in the simulations of the n-heptane/n-octane mixture due to the difference in the pure component crystal structures.  相似文献

The poly(p-phenylene vinylene) derivative MEH-PPV is known to exist as two morphologically distinct species, referred to as red phase and blue phase. We show here that the transition from the blue phase to the red phase is a critical phenomenon that can be quantitatively described as a second order phase transition with a critical temperature T(c) of 204 K. The criticality is associated with the trade-off between the gain in the electronic stabilization energy when the π-system of a planarized chain can delocalize and the concomitant loss of entropy. We studied this transition by measuring the absorption and fluorescence in methyltetrahydrofuran (MeTHF) in two different concentrations as a function of temperature. The spectra were analyzed based upon the Kuhn exciton model to extract effective conjugation lengths. At room temperature, the chains have effective conjugation lengths of about five repeat units in the ground state (the blue phase), consistent with a disordered defect cylinder conformation. Upon cooling below the critical temperature T(c), the red phase with increased effective conjugation lengths of about 10 repeat units forms, implying a more extended and better ordered conformation. Whereas aggregation is required for the creation of the red phase, its electronic states have a predominant intrachain character.  相似文献

After more than a century of research on resorcin[4]arenes (1) it is clear that such systems form spontaneously [1(6)(H(2)O)(8)]-type hexameric capsules in wet, non-polar, organic solvents. However, the interactions of these hexameric capsules with alcohols are far from being solved. Here we provide the results of an extensive study on the interaction of different alcohols with the hexameric capsules of resorcin[4]arene 1a by focusing on the exchange of magnetization manifested in diffusion NMR measurements of such capsular systems. We found that some alcohols such as 2-octyl-1-dodecanol and 1-octadecanol do not interact with the hexamers of 1a, whereas other alcohols such as 3-ethyl-3-pentanol, 2-ethyl-1-butanol and more act as simple guests and are simply encapsulated in the hexamers. Others alcohols such as 3-pentanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol and others, are part of the hexameric structure where they can exchange magnetization with alcohols in the bulk. The bulkier alcohols, due to an increase of the chain length or in branching, have a higher tendency to be encapsulated rather than being part of the hexameric capsule superstructure. This study demonstrate the unique information that diffusion NMR spectroscopy can provide on supramolecular systems in solution and on the precaution that should be exercised when analyzing diffusion NMR data of such dynamic supramolecular capsules.  相似文献

The behavior of binary mixtures of linear symmetrical ethers and alkanes adsorbed to a graphite surface from the bulk liquid mixtures is described on the basis of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data. Both the ethers and the alkanes are found to form solid monolayers when adsorbed from the liquid. In addition, the monolayer mixing behavior is addressed. The results indicate that there is good, essentially ideal, mixing in the monolayers for ethers and alkanes of the same overall chain length, where the chain length is equal to the total number of carbon and oxygen atoms in the molecule. However, a difference in chain length of more than one atom results in a variation of mixing behavior from nonideal mixing (for long pairs) to phase separation (for short pairs) on the graphite surface. Hence, we conclude that it is the relative chain lengths that control mixing behavior. The results are quantified using a regular solution model with a correction for preferential adsorption. The phase behavior of the mixed monolayers is also compared to the behavior of the bulk. Interestingly, we observe mixtures where the bulk and monolayer behavior are quite different, for example, phase separation in the bulk but essentially ideal mixing in the monolayer for mixtures of ethers and alkanes with the same chain lengths. At present, we attribute this mixing in the monolayer to dilution of the unfavorable ether oxygen-ether oxygen lone pair interactions by the coadsorbed alkanes. In addition, we find evidence for the preferential adsorption of the alkane over the ether. For example, heptane is preferentially adsorbed over dibutyl ether even though it contains two fewer atoms in the molecular chain. This contrasts with the preferential adsorption of alcohols over alkanes reported previously (Messe, L.; Perdigon, A.; Clarke, S. M.; Inaba, A.; Arnold, T. Langmuir 2005, 21, 5085-5093).  相似文献

We describe the macroscopic behaviour of polymers at the interface of two different phases in terms of the two average lengths which the chain units obtain at the two phases. The possibility for the units of the same chain to have different average lengths changes the spatial monomeric distribution and all the other macroscopic properties of the polymers compared to those of similar systems in a single phase.  相似文献

A novel, simple, and very efficient method to prepare hydrophobically modified gold particles is presented. Gold nanoparticles of different sizes and polydispersities were prepared. The diameter of the gold particles ranges from 5 to 37 nm. All systems were prepared in aqueous solution stabilized by citrate and afterwards transferred into an organic phase by using amphiphilic alkylamine ligands with different alkyl chain lengths. The chain length was varied between 8 and 18 alkyl groups. Depending on the particle size and the alkylamine, different transfer efficiencies were obtained. In some cases, the phase transfer has a yield of about 100%. After drying, the particles can be redispersed in different organic solvents. Characterization of the particles before and after transfer was performed by using UV/Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. The effect of organic solvents with various refractive indices on the plasmon band position was investigated.  相似文献

Polymer materials often contain a polydispersity of molecular lengths. We studied the linear growth rates of polymer lamellar crystals in the binary mixtures of different chain lengths by means of dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. Both chain lengths were chosen large enough to perform chain folding upon crystal growth but not very large to avoid the effect of chain entanglement in the bulk phase. We found that the crystal growth rates exhibit a linear dependence upon the compositions of mixtures. This linear relation implies that the overall crystal growth rates are integrated by the separate contributions of variable-length single polymers, supporting the model of intramolecular crystal nucleation. In each event of crystal growth of single polymers, long chains yield more crystallinity than short chains. This high efficiency explains higher crystal growth rates of long chains than that of short chains, and the explanation is quite different from the traditional view on the basis of their different melting points. In addition, with a partial release of sliding diffusion for crystal thickening, a new dependence of crystal growth rates occurs near the dilute end of long-chain compositions at high temperatures, which can be attributed to the preference of integer-number chain folding at the crystal growth front. The preferred fold lengths may vary with chain lengths and thus influence the crystal growth rates.  相似文献
