In this study the weathering behavior of southern yellow pine (SYP) wood samples pretreated in different solutions has been examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and various types of physical characterization regarding material loss and discoloration. The treatment solutions include water as a control, a commercially available water repellent (WR) wood treating additive and polyethylene glycol (PEG) products including PEG PLUS™, PEG 8000 solutions and Compound 20M in varying concentrations. All contained the wood preservative chromated copper arsenate (CCA). One sample was treated with a CCA solution only. The treatments were carried out at 20 °C and 150 psig for 1/2 h after exposure to vacuum (28 mmHg) for 15 min. Simulated weathering was achieved in an Atlas 65-W Weather-Ometer for 2000 h with both light and dark periods and rain. The temperature ranged from 23 °C during the dark cycle to 35 °C during the light cycle. With weathering the XPS O/C ratios increase due to oxidation of the surface. Exposure to UV light results in bond breakage and reaction with oxygen in the presence of air to form organic functional groups such as , , CO and/or O-C-O. These oxidized products can protect the underlying wood from deterioration if they are insoluble in water and remain on the surface as a protective coating. If soluble, rain washes the compounds away and assists in the degradation. Correlated changes are observed in the XPS O/C ratios, the high-resolution XPS C 1s spectra, the SEM micrographs and physical measurements including thickness alteration, weight loss, and discoloration by yellowing or whitening of the weathered wood. The PEG treatments are effective in protecting wood with the 2% PEG PLUS treatment providing the best weathering behavior similar to that of the CCA treatment. The WR and water treatments yield the poorest weathering properties.  相似文献

An angle-dependent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) method used to measure the thickness of molecularly thin lubricants was developed. The method was built based on an island model of patched overlayer on a flat substrate by using the photoemission signal solely from the lubricant film. Typical molecularly thin Zdol films on the CHx overcoat of unused commercial magnetic disks were measured to verify the metrology. The lubricant thickness determined by the metrology was equal to the recent result by thermostatic high vacuum atomic force microscopy. The measured deduction in the thickness of the molecularly thin lubricant films, successively irradiated by the monochromatic source operated at 14 kV/250 W, was as low as 1 ? during the first irradiation hour. XPS spectra showed that no hydrocarbons, water or oxygen were adsorbed over the Zdol outer surfaces in the tested XPS conditions. The inelastic mean free path (IMFP) of C 1s in Zdol or in CHx was found to be independent of take off angle (TOA) when TOA < 40°. The IMFP of C 1s in Zdol was ∼63.5 ? and the lubricant island thickness was ∼35 ?.  相似文献

The optimum growth conditions and strain balancing processes have been studied using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown 51 Å InAs/40 Å GaSb type-II superlattices (SLs) designed to have cut-off wavelength of 10 μm. The most dominant factor in reducing the defect level in the SL structure was buffer growth temperature evidenced by transmission electron microscopy. In the study of the strain balancing process, the SLs could be lattice matched to the GaSb substrate by increasing the thickness of the InSb interfaces (IFs) from a nominal value of 1.0 to 1.4 ML, however, the structural quality degraded dramatically when the thickness of IFs reached beyond 1.0 ML. By optimizing the growth condition and MBE shutter sequences, micron thick InAs/GaSb SLs with a reduced lattice mismatch were routinely obtained with the full-width half-maximum of 18 arcsec, and the root mean square values of surface roughness of 2 Å in 5 μm area scan of atomic force microscopy demonstrating high quality. Correlation between material quality and photoresponse signal strength in photoconductivity measurements was made on SL samples with cut-off wavelength on the order of 10 μm.  相似文献

FePt thin layers have been epitaxied either on Pt(0 0 1) or on MgO(0 0 1) substrates, and magnetically characterized using extraordinary Hall effect magnetometry and magnetic force microscopy. The coercivity originates in both cases from the pinning of domain walls on structural defects. Whereas the coercivity increases with the FePt layer thickness in FePt/Pt samples, it decreases in FePt/MgO samples. This discrepancy is explained on the basis of structural observations, and of atomistic simulations of magnetic domain wall pinning.  相似文献

Thin alloy film of Pd and Au, formed by simultaneous electron-beam and thermal evaporation techniques, respectively, is used in the design of an optical fiber hydrogen sensor. The sensor consists of a multimode fiber (MMF) in which a short section of single mode fiber (SMF), coated with the Pd-Au thin film, is inserted. Due to core diameter mismatch, the SMF cladding guides light, allowing the interaction between the sensing layer and the guided light. When the sensor is exposed to hydrogen, the Pd-Au layer refractive index diminishes and causes attenuation changes on the transmitted light. Several samples with different layer thickness uniformity were fabricated and tested in a very simple experimental set-up. We have observed that the sensor signal change is dependant on layer thickness uniformity, since the effective interaction length between the evanescent field and the sensing layer is increased. By contrast, such uniformity practically has no influence on the time response of the sensor. The resulting Pd-Au film can detect 4% hydrogen with a response time of 15 s.  相似文献

There is a growing interest by art conservators for laser cleaning of wood artworks, since traditional cleaning with chemical solvents can be a source of decay, due to the prolonged action of chemicals after the restoration. In this experiment we used excimer and Nd:YAG lasers, emitting radiation in the ultraviolet (248 nm), visible (532 nm) and near infrared (1064 nm), to investigate the effect of laser interaction on gilded wood samples at different wavelengths. Increasing fluence levels were tested to assess threshold values both for surface damage and colour changes. Detailed colorimetric analyses of the irradiated samples show that cleaning effectiveness is related to the emission wavelength, the fluence and the number of pulses.  相似文献

A specific technique of numerical treatment of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM) signal has been developed to enhance the quality of raw images, in order both to improve their contrast and to gain better insight on the sample topography and on the local arrangement of the magnetisation vector. Basically, the technique consists in computing the optimum conformal transformation that allows one to superimpose two AFM images of the same area, acquired performing subsequent scans whose fast scan axis were mutually perpendicular, and applying the inverse transform to the second image. After MFM image superposition, the two datasets were either summed or subtracted, in order to improve the magnetic contrast. Computations have been done in a Matlab® workspace with the help of Image Processing Toolbox 4.2. Improved MFM images obtained on both dots and antidots thin evaporated Co arrays in the demagnetised state (after performing alternate field demagnetisation parallel and perpendicular to the array plane) have been interpreted. Samples consisting of large-size patterns (1×1 mm) of circular dots/antidots with square/hexagonal lattices and minimum diameters of 1 μm were prepared by optical lithography. The magnetic film thickness was chosen depending on resist thickness, and varied between 25 and 150 nm, with a fixed ratio 1:4 between metal/resist film thickness. MFM was exploited to obtain images of either intra-dot or inter-antidot magnetic structures.  相似文献

Using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) measurements together with associated simulation, magnetic structures of two Ni80Fe20 (1 1 1)/Ru (0 0 0 1) multilayer samples with Ru thickness of 9 and 21 Å were investigated under various external magnetic fields at room temperature. The results reveal the existence of layer thickness, interface roughness, magnetic moment, interlayer coupling angle and non-collinear coupling. The former three are independent of Ru thickness; while the latter two are strongly dependent of Ru thickness.  相似文献

We excited surface-plasmon polariton waves (SPPW) on Cu(111) by coupling a monochromatic optical beam with a xenon multilayer thickness grating on the metal. The SPPW excitation was detected with an angle-resolved oblique-incidence reflectivity difference technique (OI-RD). The amplitude of the resonance OI-RD signal was a quadratic function of the grating modulation depth. By monitoring the decay of the resonance OI-RD signal as a function of time and temperature, we were able to study the mass transport of xenon that plays a key role in the annealing of a “rough” Xe multilayer crystalline film.  相似文献

Photoemission spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation was used to study the NdF3/Si(111) interface as a function of annealing temperature for NdF3 films. These films range in thickness from 1–20 monolayers and were deposited at room temperature. Without annealing, both F-Si and Nd-Si bonding is observed, indicating that the planar triangular NdF3 molecules lie flat on the Si(111) substrate. At annealing temperatures between 400 and 500° C, the NdF3/Si(111) interface is dominated by Nd-Si bonding as evidenced from a line-shape analysis of the Si 2 p and Nd 4 f core levels. By resonant excitation of the giant 4 d-4 f absorption resonance, the photoemission signal from the partially occupied 4 f orbitals is enhanced and can be distinguished from the photoemission signal of the overlapping F 2 p valence band. At higher temperatures F is completely lost due to the decomposition of NdF3.  相似文献

Bamboo or bamboo products undergo surface degradation during outdoor exposure resulting in lower quality in service. In this study, the effect of UV-vis light irradiation on changes in color and surface chemistry of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens Mazel) was investigated. For comparison purpose, two wood species (a soft and a hardwood) were also studied to present their differences in degradation performance. Color characterization was performed by measuring CIELab parameters (L*, a*, b* and ΔE*), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to analyze the chemical changes induced by irradiation. The results showed that the surface color of bamboo changed rapidly during the irradiation process. Compared with the wood species, bamboo was less influenced by photo-irradiation. Chemical analysis indicated that irradiation altered the chemical structures of bamboo surfaces. Lignin was the most sensitive component to photo-degradation and the intensities of its characteristics bands decreased significantly during the irradiation process. This was accompanied by formation of new carbonyl groups at 1735 cm−1. The rate of lignin degradation and carbonyl formation in bamboo was relatively lower compared with the wood species. The color changes (ΔE*) was well correlated with lignin degradation and carbonyl formation regardless bamboo or the wood species.  相似文献

A new transparent conducting oxide (TCO) film with low resistivity and high transmittance in the visible range, molybdenum-doped zinc oxide (MZO), was successfully prepared by RF magnetron sputtering method on glass substrates at room temperature. The structural, electrical, and optical properties as a function of film thickness were investigated. All the samples have a preferred orientation with the (0 0 2) planes parallel to the substrates. The resistivity initially decreases and then shows an increase with the increase of the film thickness. When the thickness is 400 nm, the film has its best crystallinity and lowest resistivity 9.2 × 10−4 Ω cm with a Hall mobility of 30 cm2 V−1 s−1 and a carrier concentration of 2.3 × 1020 cm−3. The average transmittance in the visible range exceeds 84% for all thickness films.  相似文献

In this contribution, we present results of a non-destructive in-depth analysis of concentration of chemical components at buried interfaces on Ge-based CMOS by means of hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) and low angle X-ray reflectivity (XRR). Two samples composed of a Ge/Si/SiO2/HfO2/TiN stack, with layer and interlayer thicknesses of 2500, 0.9, 0.5, 4.9, 3.4 nm and 2500, 0.7, 1, 5.8, 3 nm have been studied. The use of electrons with kinetic energies from few eV up to 15 keV enables to tune the information depth being able to analyze the desired interface in a non-destructive way. XRR enables the determination of the exact layer thickness and density. The results suggest that the Si interlayer prevents the Ge oxidation. Depth profiles of the electronic structure have been obtained for both samples by following the evolution of the photoemission signal from the Hf 2p3/2 core level as a function of the photoelectron kinetic energy. The depth profile of the electronic structure reveals the presence of a chemical shift of the Hf 2p3/2 core level, which is related to an interfacial bonding state. Our results demonstrate the excellent capability of HAXPES to study buried interfaces in a non-destructive way.  相似文献

Laser-induced voltage has been observed in c-axis oriented MgB2 thin film at room temperature. The amplitude of the signal is approximately proportional to the film thickness. For the film with the thickness of 150 nm, a very fast response has been detected when the film was irradiated by a 308 nm pulsed laser of 20 ns duration. The rise time and full width at half-maximum of the signal are about 3 and 25 ns, respectively. The physical origin of the laser-induced voltage can be attributed to a transverse thermoelectricity due to the anisotropic thermopower in MgB2.  相似文献

To investigate the initial growth of Fe films on Si(0 0 1) and the Fe/Si interface, Fe films at various thicknesses have been systematically studied by soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). The Fe L edge XAS spectrum shows a strong thickness dependence with broader line-width for thinner films. Detailed analysis of the Fe absorption signal as a function of the thickness shows that the broad linewidth of Fe L edge XAS spectra is mostly contributed by the first Fe layer at the Fe/Si interface. In contrast to XAS, Fe 2p photoemission spectra for these films are identical. However, valence band photoemission also shows a strong thickness dependence. Comparing the valence band photoemission spectra of the thin Fe/Si(0 0 1) films with that of pure Si and the thickest Fe film, the difference spectra at all thicknesses show almost identical shape indicating the same origin: the Fe/Si interface. Thus, it is mainly the first Fe layer at Fe/Si layer that is reactive with the Si substrate changing its electronic structure.  相似文献

Fe50Co50 thin films with thickness of 30 and 4 nm have been produced by rf sputtering on glass substrates, and their surface has been observed with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM); MFM images reveal a non-null component of the magnetization perpendicular to the film plane. Selected samples have been annealed in vacuum at temperatures of 300 and 350 °C for times between 20 and 120 min, under a static magnetic field of 100 Oe. DC hysteresis loops have been measured with an alternating gradient force magnetometer (AGFM) along the direction of the field applied during annealing and orthogonally to it. Samples with a thickness of 4 nm display lower coercive fields with respect to the 30 nm thick ones. Longer annealing times affect the development of a harder magnetic phase more oriented off the film plane. The field applied during annealing induces a moderate magnetic anisotropy only on 30 nm thick films.  相似文献

Numerous handheld moisture meters are available for measuring moisture levels of wood and building materials for a vast range of quality control and moisture diagnosis applications. However, many methods currently available require physical contact of a probe with the test material to operate. The contact requirement of such devices has limited applications for these purposes. There is a tremendous demand for dynamic online quality assessment of in-process materials for moisture content (MC) measurements. In this paper, a non-destructive non-contact ultrasound technology was used to evaluate the effects of increasing temperature in two MC levels and of increasing MC in lumber. The results show that the ultrasonic absolute transmittance and velocity parameters are directly correlated very well (R2≥0.87) with temperature for the two moisture levels in wood. At constant temperature, however, the velocity is inversely correlated with MC. It was also found that the distribution of MC along the length is marginally insignificant to both ultrasonic measurements. The transmittance measurement along the orthogonal thickness direction is insignificant above the fiber saturation MC; similarly, the velocity measurement is marginally insignificant. The study concludes a positive correlation and a good fit for this technology to advance into the development of an automated device for determining wood moisture levels, which will in turn be used to control the dynamics of wood drying/sterilization processes. Further calibration research is recommended to ascertain the constraints and limitations of the technology to specific wood species and dimension. Granular C/Co/C films have been prepared by magnetron sputtering from C and Co onto glass substrates at room temperature and subsequent in situ annealing. It has been found that the structure and magnetic properties of the C/Co/C films depend strongly on the Co layer thickness. Vibrating sample magnetometer measurements indicate that the in-plane coercivities reach maximum in 20 nm Co thickness of both as-deposited and annealed films. The squareness ratio of annealed films was more than 0.8. X-ray diffraction shows that majority Co nanograins are formed as the hexagonal-close-packed (HCP) structure in 20 nm Co thickness with annealing at 400 °C. Scanning probe microscope was used to scan surface morphology and magnetic domain structures. The values of the surface roughness were lower than 0.6 nm in all annealed samples. The average magnetic cluster size was estimated to be about 10 nm in annealed 20 nm Co thickness films.  相似文献

Fe/Mn multilayers were grown by means of a molecular beam epitaxy system onto quartz substrates changing the thickness of the elemental layers. A spontaneous unidirectional anisotropy develops for thickness of Fe or Mn layer of about 35 Å. Since the samples were no subjected to field cooling treatments during or after the growth, this kind of anisotropy can be explained considering besides the exchange coupling at the Fe/Mn interface, the structural disorder due to dislocations and defects. In effect, the appearance and strength of the exchange-bias field are depending on the surface roughness of the samples and are significantly enhanced by the formation of a structure constituted by islands showing a snake-like morphology. The fitting of the angular dependence of the exchange-bias field indicates that the associated anisotropy is due to the superposition of two contributions, the principal one with unidirectional symmetry and the other showing uniaxial characteristics.  相似文献

Novel tree ring parameters – δ13C and δ2H from methoxyl groups – have been developed to reconstruct palaeoclimate. Tests with δ13C and δ18O derived from whole wood and cellulose samples, however, indicated differences in the isotopic composition and climate signal, depending on the extracted wood component. We assess this signal dependency by analysing (i) δ13C and δ18O from whole wood and cellulose and (ii) δ13C and δ2H from methoxyl groups, using Pinus sylvestris L. growing near Altenkirchen (Germany). Results indicate significant correlations among the time series derived from whole wood, cellulose, and lignin methoxyl groups. Compared with the whole wood samples, δ13C from methoxyl groups showed a different and overall lower response to climate parameters. On the other hand, δ2H from methoxyl groups showed high correlations with temperature and was also correlated with ring width, indicating its potential as a temperature proxy. Isotope time series with the highest correlation with climatic parameter were: (i) whole wood and cellulose δ13C with growing season precipitation and summer temperature; (ii) methoxyl groups with spring precipitation; (iii) whole wood and cellulose δ18O correlates with annual evapotranspiration and water balance; and (iv) methoxyl group δ2H with spring temperatures. These findings reveal that multiple climate elements can be reconstructed from different wood components and that whole wood proxies perform comparably to cellulose time series.  相似文献
