A multigrid convergence acceleration technique has been developed for solving both the Navier–Stokes and turbulence transport equations. For turbulence closure a low-Reynolds-number q–ω turbulence model is employed. To enable convergence, the stiff non-linear turbulent source terms have to be treated in a special way. Further modifications to standard multigrid methods are necessary for the resolution of shock waves in supersonic flows. An implicit LU algorithm is used for numerical time integration. Several ramped duct test cases are presented to demonstrate the improvements in performance of the numerical scheme. Cases with strong shock waves and separation are included. It is shown to be very effective to treat fluid and turbulence equations with the multigrid method. A comparison with experimental data demonstrates the accuracy of the q–ω turbulence closure for the simulation of supersonic flows. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. With a single numerical method the performance of three classes of turbulence models is compared for different types of attached boundary layers, for which direct numerical simulations or experiments are available in the literature. The boundary-layer equations are solved with the following turbulence models: an algebraic model, two-equation models (k-ε andk-ω), and a differential Reynolds-stress model. The test cases are the channel flow, and boundary layers with zero, favourable and adverse streamwise pressure gradient. The differential Reynolds-stress model gives the best overall performance, whereas the performance of the algebraic model and thek-ω model is reasonably good. The performance of thek-ε model is less good for boundary layers with a non-zero streamwise pressure gradient, but it can easily be improved by an additional source term in the ε equation, which is also applied in the considered differential Reynolds-stress model.  相似文献

Non‐linear turbulence models can be seen as an improvement of the classical eddy‐viscosity concept due to their better capacity to simulate characteristics of important flows. However, application of non‐linear models demand robustness of the numerical method applied, requiring a stable discretization scheme for convergence of all variables involved. Usually, non‐linear terms are handled in an explicit manner leading to possible numerical instabilities. Thus, the present work shows the steps taken to adapt a general non‐linear constitutive equation using a new semi‐implicit numerical treatment for the non‐linear diffusion terms. The objective is to increase the degree of implicitness of the solution algorithm to enhance convergence characteristics. Flow over a backward‐facing step was computed using the control volume method applied to a boundary‐fitted coordinate system. The SIMPLE algorithm was used to relax the algebraic equations. Classical wall function and a low Reynolds number model were employed to describe the flow near the wall. The results showed that for certain combination of relaxation parameters, the semi‐implicit treatment proposed here was the sole successful treatment in order to achieve solution convergence. Also, application of the implicit method described here shows that the stability of the solution either increases (high Reynolds with non‐orthogonal mesh) or preserves the same (low Reynolds number applications). Additional advantages of the procedure proposed here lie in the possibility of testing different non‐linear expressions if one considers the enhanced robustness and stability obtained for the entire numerical algorithm. A three-parameter model of turbulence applicable to free boundary layers has been developed and applied for the prediction of axisymmetric turbulent swirling flows in uniform and stagnant surroundings under the action of buoyancy forces. The turbulent momentum and heat fluxes appearing in the time-averaged equations for the mean motion have been determined from algebraic expressions, derived by neglecting the convection and diffusion terms in the differential transport equations for these quantities, which relate the turbulent fluxes to the kinetic energy of turbulence, k, the dissipation length scale of turbulence, L, and the temperature covariance, T2. Differential transport equations have been used to determine these latter quantities. The governing equations have been solved using fully implicit finite difference schemes. The turbulence model is capable of reproducing the gross features of pure jet flows, buoyant flows and swirling flows for weak and moderate swirl. The behaviour of a turbulent buoyant swirling jet has been found to depend solely on exit swirl and Froude numbers. The predicted results indicate that the incorporation of buoyancy can cause significant changes in the behaviour of a swirling jet, particularly when the buoyancy strength is high. The jet exhibits similarity behaviour in the initial region for weak swirl and weak buoyancy strengths only, and the asymptotic case of a swirling jet under the action of buoyancy forces is a pure plume in the far field. The predicted results have been found to be in satisfactory agreement with the available experimental data and in good qualitative agreement with other predicted results.  相似文献

For unstructured finite volume methods, we present a line implicit Runge–Kutta method applied as smoother in an agglomerated multigrid algorithm to significantly improve the reliability and convergence rate to approximate steady-state solutions of the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. To describe turbulence, we consider a one-equation Spalart–Allmaras turbulence model. The line implicit Runge–Kutta method extends a basic explicit Runge–Kutta method by a preconditioner given by an approximate derivative of the residual function. The approximate derivative is only constructed along predetermined lines which resolve anisotropies in the given grid. Therefore, the method is a canonical generalisation of point implicit methods. Numerical examples demonstrate the improvements of the line implicit Runge–Kutta when compared with explicit Runge–Kutta methods accelerated with local time stepping.  相似文献

An accurate, fast, matrix-free implicit method has been developed to solve compressible turbulent How problems using the Spalart and Allmaras one equation turbulence model on unstructured meshes. The mean-flow and turbulence-model equations are decoupled in the time integration in order to facilitate the incorporation of different turbulence models and reduce memory requirements. Both mean flow and turbulent equations are integrated in time using a linearized implicit scheme. A recently developed, fast, matrix-free implicit method, GMRES+LU-SGS, is then applied to solve the resultant system of linear equations. The spatial discretization is carried out using a hybrid finite volume and finite element method, where the finite volume approximation based on a containment dual control volume rather than the more popular median-dual control volume is used to discretize the inviscid fluxes, and the finite element approximation is used to evaluate the viscous flux terms. The developed method is used to compute a variety of turbulent flow problems in both 2D and 3D. The results obtained are in good agreement with theoretical and experimental data and indicate that the present method provides an accurate, fast, and robust algorithm for computing compressible turbulent flows on unstructured meshes.  相似文献

Two methods for coupling the Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes equations with the qω turbulence model equations on structured grid systems have been studied; namely a loosely coupled method and a strongly coupled method. The loosely coupled method first solves the Navier–Stokes equations with the turbulent viscosity fixed. In a subsequent step, the turbulence model equations are solved with all flow quantities fixed. On the other hand, the strongly coupled method solves the Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the turbulence model equations simultaneously. In this paper, numerical stabilities of both methods in conjunction with the approximated factorization‐alternative direction implicit method are analysed. The effect of the turbulent kinetic energy terms in the governing equations on the convergence characteristics is also studied. The performance of the two methods is compared for several two‐ and three‐dimensional problems.

This paper discusses the calculation of quasi-three-dimensional incompressible viscous flow by FEM. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved in curvilinear co-ordinates by the reduced integration and penalty method (RIP). Streamline upwind artificial viscosity (SUAV) and the Baldwin-Lomax algebraic model of turbulence are used. Time discretization is by the general implicit θ-method.  相似文献

The development of new aeronautic projects require accurate and efficient simulations of compressible flows in complex geometries. It is well known that most flows of interest are at least locally turbulent and that the modelling of this turbulence is critical for the reliability of the computations. A turbulence closure model which is both cheap and reasonably accurate is an essential part of a compressible code. An implicit algorithm to solve the 2D and 3D compressible Navier–Stokes equations on unstructured triangular/tetrahedral grids has been extended to turbulent flows. This numerical scheme is based on second-order finite element–finite volume discretization: the diffusive and source terms of the Navier–Stokes equations are computed using a finite element method, while the other terms are computed with a finite volume method. Finite volume cells are built around each node by means of the medians. The convective fluxes are evaluated with the approximate Riemann solver of Roe coupled with the van Albada limiter. The standard k–ϵ model has been introduced to take into account turbulence. Implicit integration schemes with efficient numerical methods (CGS, GMRES and various preconditioning techniques) have also been implemented. Our interest is to present the whole method and to demonstrate its limitations on some well-known test cases in three-dimensional geometries. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An implicit unfactored method for the coupled solution of the compressible Navier–Stokes equations with two-equation turbulence models is presented. Both fluid-flow and turbulence transport equations are discretized by a characteristics-based scheme. The implicit unfactored method combines Newton subiterations and point-by-point Gauss–Seidel subrelaxation. Implicit-coupled and -decoupled strategies are compared for their efficiency in the solution of the Navier–Stokes equations in conjunction with low-Re two-equation turbulence models. Computations have been carried out for the flow over an axisymmetric bump using the k–ϵ and k–ω models. Comparisons have been obtained with experimental data and other numerical solutions. The present study reveals that the implicit unfactored implementation of the two-equation turbulence models reduces the computing time and improves the robustness of the CFD code in turbulent compressible flows. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper an implicit projection method for the solution of the two-dimensional, time-dependent, incompressible Navier– Stokes equations is presented. The basic principle of this method is that the evaluation of the time evolution is split into intermediate steps. The computational method is based on the approximate factorization technique. The coupled approach is used to link the equations of motion and the turbulence model equations. The standard k-ϵ turbulence model is used. The current methodology, which has been tested extensively for steady problems, is now applied for the numerical simulation of unsteady flows. Several cases were tested, such as plane or axisymmetric channels, a backward-facing step, a square cavity and an axisymmetric stenosis.  相似文献

Details are given of the development of a two‐dimensional vertical numerical model for simulating unsteady free‐surface flows, using a non‐hydrostatic pressure distribution. In this model, the Reynolds equations and the kinematic free‐surface boundary condition are solved simultaneously, so that the water surface elevation can be integrated into the solution and solved for, together with the velocity and pressure fields. An efficient numerical algorithm has been developed, deploying implicit parameters similar to those used in the Crank–Nicholson method, and generating a block tri‐diagonal algebraic system of equations. The model has been applied to simulate a range of unsteady flow problems involving relatively strong vertical accelerations. The results show that the numerical algorithm described is able to produce accurate predictions and is also easy to apply. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new parallelization method is proposed for factored alternating direction implicit (ADI) schemes based on the vectorized global domain directional sweep. This approach, when combined with multi-partitioning domain decomposition, significantly reduces the frequency of necessary communication calls and minimizes processor idling during the sweeping processes. The present parallelization approach is applied to a number of vectorized two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes solvers. The codes vary in complexity from laminar to algebraic turbulence closure model and finally the strongly coupled Navier-Stokes and K-e equations. Implementation is conducted using PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) message passing tool on the Cray T3D massively parallel processing (MPP) machine. The implemented parallel codes are assessed in terms of accuracy and parallel performance.  相似文献

The present article treats two objectives. In the first investigation attention is focused on the application of time-adaptive finite elements formulated on the basis of a high-order time integration procedure on a constitutive model for compressible finite strain viscoplasticity for metal powder. In this connection, it has to be emphasized that the integration procedure is not only applied to the evolution equations on Gauss-point level but on the total system of differential–algebraic equations resulting from the application of the vertical line method on the quasi-static finite element equations. The specific application emerges from the field of metal powder compaction. Particular studies are carried out using stiffly accurate, diagonally implicit Runge–Kutta methods in combination with the Multilevel-Newton algorithm for solving the DAE-system. In this respect, the effort vs. accuracy behavior is investigated which is also related to order reduction known in elastoplasticity. The second topic treats the local stress algorithm for taking into account the yield function based finite strain viscoplasticity model, where the classical Newton–Raphson method fails. This is the reason why most constitutive models of powder materials are implemented into explicit finite element codes. Thus, the proposed investigations compare different methods in view of a stable and efficient integration process in implicit finite element formulations.  相似文献

This paper investigates the performance of preconditioned Krylov subspace methods used in a previously presented two‐fluid model developed for the simulation of separated and intermittent gas–liquid flows. The two‐fluid model has momentum and mass balances for each phase. The equations comprising this model are solved numerically by applying a two‐step semi‐implicit time integration procedure. A finite difference numerical scheme with a staggered mesh is used. Previously, the resulting linear algebraic equations were solved by a Gaussian band solver. In this study, these algebraic equations are also solved using the generalized minimum residual (GMRES) and the biconjugate gradient stabilized (Bi‐CGSTAB) Krylov subspace iterative methods preconditioned with incomplete LU factorization using the ILUT(p, τ) algorithm. The decrease in the computational time using the iterative solvers instead of the Gaussian band solver is shown to be considerable. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The present paper introduces a new numerical method for predicting the characteristics of thermocapillary turbulent convection in a differentially-heated rectangular cavity with two superposed and immiscible fluid layers. The unsteady Reynolds form of the Navier–Stokes equations and energy equation are solved by using the control volume approach on a staggered grid system using SIMPLE algorithm. The turbulence quantities are predicted by applying the standard kε turbulence model. The level set formulation is applied for predicting the topological changes of the interface separating the two fluid layers and to provide an accurate and robust modeling of the interfacial normal and tangential stresses. The computational results obtained showed good agreement when compared with the previous experimental, numerical and analytical benchmark data for different validation cases in both laminar and turbulent regimes. The present numerical method is then applied to predict the velocity and temperature distribution in two immiscible liquid layers with undeformable interface for a wide range of Marangoni numbers. The laminar-turbulent transition is demonstrated by obtaining the turbulence features at high interfacial temperature gradient which is characterized by high Marangoni number. The effect of increasing Marangoni number on the interface dynamics in turbulent regime is also investigated.  相似文献

A formally third-order accurate finite volume upwind scheme which preserves monotonicity is constructed. It is based on a third-order polynomial interpolant in Leonard's normalized variable space. A flux limiter is derived using the fact that there exists a one-to-one map between normalized variable and TVD spaces. This scheme, which is relatively simple and quite compact, is implemented in a staggered general co-ordinates finite volume algorithm including the standard k–ϵ model and applied to the turbulence transport equations. A number of test problems demonstrate the utility of the proposed scheme. It is shown that in cases where turbulence convection is dominant, the application of a higher-order monotone convection scheme to the turbulence equations leads to results which are more accurate than those obtained using the first-order upwind scheme.  相似文献

For complex turbulent flows, Reynolds stress closure modeling (RSCM) is the lowest level at which models can be developed with some fidelity to the governing Navier–Stokes equations. Citing computational burden, researchers have long sought to reduce the seven-equation RSCM to the so-called algebraic Reynolds stress model which involves solving only two evolution equations for turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation. In the past, reduction has been accomplished successfully in the weak-equilibrium limit of turbulence. In non-equilibrium turbulence, attempts at reduction have lacked mathematical rigor and have been based on ad hoc hypotheses resulting in less than adequate models.?In this work we undertake a formal (numerical) examination of the dynamical system of equations that constitute the Reynolds stress closure model to investigate the following questions. (i) When does the RSCM equation system formally permit reduced representation? (ii) What is the dimensionality (number of independent variables) of the permitted reduced system? (iii) How can one derive the reduced system (algebraic Reynolds stress model) from the full RSCM equations? Our analysis reveals that a lower-dimensional representation of the RSCM equations is possible not only in the equilibrium limit, but also in the slow-manifold stage of non-equilibrium turbulence. The degree of reduction depends on the type of mean-flow deformation and state of turbulence. We further develop two novel methods for deriving algebraic Reynolds stress models from RSCM equations in non-equilibrium turbulence. The present work is expected to play an important role in bringing much of the sophistication of the RSCM into the realm of two-equation algebraic Reynolds stress models. Another objective of this work is to place the other algebraic stress modeling efforts in the lower-dimensional modeling context. Received 19 November 1999 and accepted 3 August 2000  相似文献

This paper presents a finite element solution algorithm for three‐dimensional isothermal turbulent flows for mold‐filling applications. The problems of interest present unusual challenges for both the physical modelling and the solution algorithm. High‐Reynolds number transient turbulent flows with free surfaces have to be computed on complex three‐dimensional geometries. In this work, a segregated algorithm is used to solve the Navier–Stokes, turbulence and front‐tracking equations. The streamline–upwind/Petrov–Galerkin method is used to obtain stable solutions to convection‐dominated problems. Turbulence is modelled using either a one‐equation turbulence model or the κ–ε two‐equation model with wall functions. Turbulence equations are solved for the natural logarithm of the turbulence variables. The change of dependent variables allows for a robust solution algorithm and good predictions even on coarse meshes. This is very important in the case of large three‐dimensional applications for which highly refined meshes result in untreatable large numbers of elements. The position of the flow front in the mold cavity is computed using a level set approach. Finally, equations are integrated in time using an implicit Euler scheme. The methodology presents the robustness and cost effectiveness needed to tackle complex industrial applications. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
