This work presents a small-signal analysis for investigating the transmission performance of optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signals with a directly modulated DFB laser (DML). The analysis shows the positive chirp of DMLs can intensify power fading after transmission with positive dispersion and provide power gain instead with negative dispersion. The power of subcarrier-to-subcarrier intermixing interference after square-law direct detection, however, is independent on the sign of dispersion. 相似文献

This paper studies the impact of concatenated AWG routers of metro transparent network with directly modulated lasers (DML). The wide bandwidth and central frequency shift of the directly modulated laser entail a large signal penalty, thereby limiting the allowable number of AWG routers in a metro network. The degradation caused by the concatenation of passband-flattened AWG is much lower than that of the conventional round-top AWG of the same number. Therefore the passband-flattened AWG has the largest allowable number in the metro network based on DML. 相似文献

An experimental and theoretical study of the effect of temperature on the static and dynamic characteristics of packaged external fiber grating semiconductor lasers (FGL) is reported on. Operating in single frequency mode, the laser exhibits high output power (> 8 mW), high temperature stability of operating frequency (-3.4 GHz/K), and low static chirp (-60 MHz/mA). The observed hysteresis in wavelength versus temperature dependence is explained in the frame of a time-domain FGL model accounting for asymmetric nonlinear gain. The laser has low dynamic chirp (~16 MHz/mA) under 2.5 GB/s direct modulation, which is the key factor determining low penalty transmission over 312 km of SSM fiber. Dense WDM transmission performed at 2.6 Gbit/s over 117 km of SSM fiber shows that an FGL-based transmitter is a factor of 7 more tolerant to temperature variations than externally modulated DFB lasers. 相似文献

We demonstrate the transmission of directly modulated 10-Gb/s WDM signals over 320 km of negative dispersion fiber (dispersion:-2.5 ps/km/nm @1550 nm) without dispersion compensation. The results indicate that a regional metro WDM network could be implemented cost-effectively by using the proposed negative dispersion fiber and direct modulated lasers. 相似文献

在理论上从四波混频的强度耦合方程出发,给出了基于光纤光参量放大(FOPA)光脉冲的光场表达式,并进一步分析了信号光被相位调制或强度调制后,光脉冲的频率啁啾和强度演化.结论指出:若信号光被强度调制,对所生成脉冲宽度无明显的影响,但可以提高消光比;若信号光被相位调制,所生成的脉冲具有更大的线性正啁啾,可以在相同的抽运功率条件下得到比无相位调制时更窄的脉冲.实验上给出了10 GHz工作速率下的结果,其结果与理论分析符合得很好.通过信号光的相位调制,在05 W平均抽运功率条件下得到了消光比22 dB,脉宽为5

利用二次谐波频率分辨光学门脉冲分析仪从实验上分析研究了具有啁啾的10 GHz光脉冲在不同输入功率下演化形成孤子的规律和特点。实验发现:输入脉冲在光纤中传输3.5个色散长度时,其时间宽度、频率啁啾和时间带宽积都随着输入功率的增加而减小。当输入功率大于一阶孤子功率的理论值时,光脉冲能够演化形成孤子;脉冲在随后传输过程中其宽度基本保持不变,波形、频率啁啾和时间带宽积仍随着传输距离的变化而变化;输入功率越高,形成的一阶孤子脉冲的宽度越窄。当输入功率小于一阶孤子功率的理论值时,输出脉冲的时间宽度随着传输距离的增加而增加,频率啁啾随着传输距离的增加而减小,光脉冲不能演化形成孤子。 相似文献

The improvement on the impact of filter concatenation effect on optical signal quality is investigated and discussed for applications in metropolitan optical networks utilizing cost-effective 10-Gb/s transmitters. The sources are low-cost conventional directly modulated lasers (DMLs), fabricated for operation at 2.5 Gb/s but modulated at 10 Gb/s. Performance improvement is achieved by using decision-feedback equalization (DFE) at the receiver end. Experimental studies consider both transient and adiabatic chirp dominated DMLs sources with different chirp characteristics. Measurements have been obtained using a recirculating loop set-up and the performance improvement is evaluated in terms of bit-error-rate (BER) versus number of loops. 相似文献

In this paper we present multi-channel chirp measurements of wide-band sources, using a programmable Fourier-domain optical processor (FDOP) as a near-perfect linear frequency discriminator element followed by a fast photodiode and electrical sampling oscilloscope. The electric field of a 10.7 Gbit/s phase-encoded data source and a directly modulated laser diode are simultaneously interrogated with this measurement system. The constellation diagram of the phase-encoded data source is demonstrated, and a comparison with another phase-sensitive measurement technique is performed. Additionally, an extension to this technique is demonstrated in which the time-resolved chirp of a picosecond-duration mode-locked laser diode with a 260 GHz spectral bandwidth is characterised using the FDOP and a high-bandwidth optical sampling oscilloscope. This measurement ensemble has sufficient temporal resolution to characterise random or repetitive data signals up to 100GBaud. 相似文献

We propose an all-optical hybrid network composed of optical code division multiple access (CDMA) rings interconnecting through a reconfigurable wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) metro area ring. This network retains the advantages of both the optical CDMA and WDM techniques, including asynchronous access and differentiated quality of service, while removing the hard limit on the number of subscribers and increasing network flexibility. The all-optical network is enabled by using nonlinear optical loop mirrors in an add/drop router (ADR) that performs code conversion, dropping, and switching asynchronously. We experimentally demonstrate the functionalities of the ADR in the proposed scheme asynchronously and obtain error-free performance. The bit-error rate measurements show acceptable power penalties for different code routes. 相似文献

Storage area networks (SANs) are an essential part of enterprise computing today. There is no comprehensive business continuity plan without SANs in the picture. This paper proposes and evaluates network survivability of optical paths in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) based storage area networks in a metro ring network. The paper begins with a background on network survivability in metro WDM ring network. Subsequently, the network and node architectures along with their medium access control (MAC) protocols are described. In this work, one link failure (a single cable cut) in metro WDM based SANs in a ring network architecture is considered. Performance evaluation for network survivability in metro WDM SAN is carried out by means of discrete-event computer simulation. Network throughput and packet delay are investigated. A device consisting of a cascaded semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and silicon on insulator (SOI) optical waveguide is presented to amplify and reshape the frequency spectrum of optical pulses in the picoseconds time duration. Numerical simulations show that the output spectrum of the amplified pulse by SOA can be effectively reshaped by utilizing the SOI waveguide. The length of the SOI waveguide may be judiciously adjusted to significantly reduce the frequency chirp of the output pulse from the SOA resulting in reshaping of the output spectrum. We find that the property of pulse spectrum is sensitive to the input pulse power and its temporal width. 相似文献

Due to the fact that a metro network market is very cost sensitive, direct modulated schemes appear attractive. In this paper a CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) system is studied in detail by means of an Optical Communication System Design Software; a detailed study of the modulated current shape (exponential, sine and gaussian) for 2.5 Gb/s CWDM Metropolitan Area Networks is performed to evaluate its tolerance to linear impairments such as signal-to-noise-ratio degradation and dispersion. Point-to-point links are investigated and optimum design parameters are obtained. Through extensive sets of simulation results, it is shown that some of these shape pulses are more tolerant to dispersion when compared with conventional gaussian shape pulses. In order to achieve a low Bit Error Rate (BER), different types of optical transmitters are considered including strongly adiabatic and transient chirp dominated Directly Modulated Lasers (DMLs). We have used fibers with different dispersion characteristics, showing that the system performance depends, strongly, on the chosen DML-fiber couple. 相似文献

A new method of analyzing the chirp characteristics of directly modulated lasers and integrated laser-modulators is presented in this paper. Phase-circuit has been introduced into the circuit model of distributed feedback (DFB) lasers in the analysis. Therefore, the chirp characteristics of the device can be obtained by simulating the modified circuit model. The simulation results agree well with the published data. Furthermore, this modified model is combined with the circuit model of electroabsorption (EA) modulators to simulate the chirp characteristics of the monolithic integration of a DFB laser and an EA modulator. The simulation is focused on the dependence of the frequency chirp of the integrated device on the isolation resistance between laser and modulator. Much lower chirp can be seen in the integrated lightwave source compared to the directly modulated laser. 相似文献

Semiconductor singlemode laser chirp models that discriminate the adiabatic and the transient frequency chirp components are very relevant and useful, as they allow evaluating per se the effects of both chirp components on directly modulated (DM) laser communication system performance. For this purpose, Koch's model has been extensively used, showing high accuracy for low and moderate laser current regimes.This paper aims at proposing an extended Koch's (e-Koch's) model that allows its accurate use in high current regimes for an arbitrary functional form of the laser nonlinear gain compression factor. High current regimes are commonly found in high bit-rate optical communication systems, in order to achieve sufficient laser intensity modulation bandwidth. Frequency chirping predictions by the proposed model, assessed by numerical simulation, show good agreement with the ones estimated by the laser rate equations, for both linear and logarithmic carrier density dependent laser gain models. It is also shown that e-Koch's model provides good estimates of the performance of 40 Gbit/s DM laser multi-span system. 相似文献

We theoretically analyze nonlinear interactions between chirped solitons in dispersion-managed wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) systems. We employ the perturbation method to evaluate frequency and chirp shifts caused by collisions among different WDM channels. It is shown that a chirped soliton suffers less frequency shift and time displacement than an ideal soliton, indicating its potential applicability for WDM systems. 相似文献

The supercontinuum (SC) source plays a key role in wavelength division multiplexing over the optical time division multiplexing (WDM/OTDM) transmission system. The SC produced in dispersion decreasing fibre (DDF) is wider and flatter than that produced in dispersion shifted fibre (DSF). In this paper, a SC producing process in DDF is numerically simulated, the effects of pump pulse chirp on the SC width and flatness are initially studied and the corresponding theoretical explanations are given. Particularly, we have analysed and compared the evolutions of the SC along DDF pumped by different chirp pulses. Several valuable conclusions are obtained. 相似文献
