Carbon fabric (CF) was surface treated with silane-coupling agent modification, HNO3 oxidation, combined surface treatment, respectively. The friction and wear properties of the carbon fabric reinforced phenolic composites (CFP), sliding against GCr15 steel rings, were investigated on an M-2000 model ring-on-block test rig. Experimental results revealed that combined surface treatment largely reduced the friction and wear of the CFP composites. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) investigation of the worn surfaces of the CFP composites showed that combined surface modified CFP composite had the strongest interfacial adhesion and the smoothest worn surface under given load and sliding rate. SEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study of carbon fiber surface showed that the fiber surface became rougher and the oxygen concentration increased greatly after combined surface treatment, which improved the adhesion between the fiber and the phenolic resin matrix and hence to improve the friction-reduction and anti-wear properties of the CFP composite.

In this study, the reinforcing mechanism of amine functionalized on carbon fibers (CFs) has been precisely discussed, and the differences between aliphatic and aromatic compounds have been illustrated. Polyacrylonitrile‐based CFs were functionalized with ethylenediamine, 4,4‐diaminodiphenyl sulphone, and p‐aminobenzoic acid (PAB), and CF‐reinforced epoxy composites were prepared. The structural and surface characteristics of the functionalized CFs were investigated using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical properties in terms of tensile and flexural strengths and moduli were studied. The FT‐IR results confirm the success in bonding amines on the CF surface. After treatment of CFs, the oxygen and nitrogen contents as well as the N/C ratio showed an increase. XPS results provided evidence of the chemical reaction during functionalization, rather than being physically coated on the CF surface. Chemical modification of CF with diamines led to considerable enhancement in compatibility of CF filaments and epoxy resin, and remarkable improvements were seen in both tensile and flexural properties of the reinforced composites. SEM micrographs also confirmed the improvement of interface adhesion between the modified CFs and epoxy matrix. Finally, it can be concluded that PAB is a promising candidate to functionalize CF in order to improve interfacial properties of CF/epoxy composites. In this work, ozone modification method and air‐oxidationwere used for the surface treatment of polyacrylonitrile(PAN)‐based carbon fiber. The surface characteristics of carbon fibers were characterized by XPS. The interfacial properties of carbon fiber‐reinforced (polyetheretherketone) PEEK (CF/PEEK) composites were investigated by means of the single fiber pull‐out tests. As a result, it was found that IFSS (interfacial shear strength) values of the composites with ozone‐treated carbon fiber are increased by 60% compared to that without treatment. XPS results show that ozone treatment increases the amount of carboxyl groups on carbon fiber surface, thus the interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and PEEK matrix is effectively promoted. The effect of surface treatment of carbon fibers on the tribological properties of CF/PEEKcomposites was comparativelyinvestigated. Experimental results revealed that surface treatment can effectively improve the interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and PEEK matrix. Thus the wear resistance was significantly improved. Using trihydroxy polyether polyol (PPG), diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as soft segment and hard segment, carbon fiber (CF) as reinforcement, and self-crosslinking CF/polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composite was prepared by prepolymer method. In this study, starch and octanoyl chloride were esterified to obtain esterified starch (SE). The fiber is then melt blended with PMMA matrix to prepare PMMA composite. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and SEM were used to analyze and characterize the composites produced. The results show that the composite material was prepared by separately modifying the fiber with NaOH and SE, respectively. The mechanical properties of the composite materials prepared by the modified fiber are improved, and the fiber and the PMMA matrix showed better compatibility. The mechanism of comodified fiber enhanced the mechanical properties of its composites.

Grafting nanoscale reinforcement onto macrolevel carbon fiber (CF) surface is an efficient approach to improve interfacial strength and properties of composites. In the research, 2 different polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)/CF hybrids have been prepared by a facile 2‐step method. Carbon fiber was grafted with aniline groups by aryl diazonium reaction using water as the reaction medium, and then separately functionalized with glycidyllsobutyl POSS (EP0418) or glycidyl POSS (EP0409) by the chemical bonding. Characterization of fiber surface structures before and after modification confirmed the covalent bonding nature between both kinds of POSS and CF. Atomic force microscopy images showed the uniform distributions of EP0418 or EP0409 modified on the fiber surface and the similar enhanced degree of surface roughness (89.3 and 88.7 nm). Dynamic contact angle tests showed that EP0409‐grafted CF (CF‐g‐EP0409) had lower contact angles and higher surface free energy than those of EP0418‐grafted CF (CF‐g‐EP0418). Interfacial strength and hydrothermal aging resistance of composites enhanced significantly after POSS modification, especially for CF‐g‐EP0409 composites. Interfacial reinforcing mechanisms of composites reinforced with 2 different POSS/CF hybrids have also been analyzed and compared.

The effect of air oxidation and ozone surface treatment of carbon fibers (CF) on tribological properties of CF reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites under oil‐lubricated condition was investigated. Experimental results revealed that ozone treated CF reinforced PTFE (CF–PTFE) composite had the lowest friction coefficient and wear under various applied loads and sliding speeds compared with untreated and air‐oxidated composites. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study of carbon fiber surface showed that, after ozone treatment, oxygen concentration was obviously increased, and the amount of oxygen‐containing groups on CF surfaces was largely increased. The increase in the amount of oxygen‐containing groups enhanced interfacial adhesion between CF and PTFE matrix. With strong interfacial adhesion of the composite, stress could be effectively transmitted to carbon fibers; carbon fibers were strongly bonded with PTFE matrix and large scale rubbing‐off of PTFE was prevented, therefore, the tribological properties of the composite were improved. The effects of surface treatment of a carbon fiber (CF) by supersonic atmosphere plasma spraying (SAPS) on the interfacial adhesion behavior and morphology of polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) matrix blends filled CF composites were investigated. Effects of surface treated a commercial CF on mechanical properties are studied. Contact angle was measured to examine the changes in wettability of the CF. The chemical and morphological changes were characterized by using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. PP/PS/CF composites were fabricated with and without SAPS treatment, and their interlaminar fracture toughnesses were compared. The results showed that the interlaminar shear strength of composites has been greatly improved filled SAPS modification CF. The water contact angle of resin sample decreased 50% after addition of SAPS surface‐treated CF. Scanning electron microscopy results on the fractured surface exhibited PP/PS blends adhered well around the CFs of the SAPS‐treated specimen compared with that of the untreated specimen. This attributed to the CF interlock, and it improves the wetting between fibers and resins. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The present work comparatively studied the modification effects of short carbon fiber (CF) on the mechanical properties and fretting wear behavior of ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/CF composites. The interactions between CFs and UHMWPE interface were also investigated in detail. The results showed that, with the increase in fiber content, the compressive modulus and hardness of the composites increased, while its impact strength decreased. It was found that filling of CF can reduce the friction and wear of UHMWPE. In addition, the UHMWPE‐based composites reinforced with nitric acid‐treated CF exhibited better mechanical properties, lower friction coefficient, and higher wear resistance than those of untreated UHMWPE/CF composites. This was attributed to the improvement of interfacial adhesion and compatibility between CF and UHMWPE matrix caused by surface chemical modification of CF. In this work, composite samples were prepared using Borassus fibers and a high-density polyethylene matrix. Alternatively, a chemically modified matrix (maleic anhydride grafted HDPE) was also used to improve fiber-matrix compatibility. The effect of fiber loading on the mechanical properties was investigated. Borassus fiber/modified HDPE composites exhibited improved mechanical performance as compared to pure HDPE composites. SEM studies on the fractured specimens of unmodified HDPE fiber composites reveal the poor fiber-matrix interaction, whereas the interaction is strong with enhanced mechanical properties for modified HDPE fiber composites. This is due to an improvement of the chemical bonding between the modified HDPE matrix and the Borassus fiber as also supported by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results. Thermal stability was also found to be enhanced slightly for modified HDPE composites.

Mechanical properties of carbon fiber (CF) and carbon nanotube (CNT)‐filled thermoplastic high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) composites were studied with particular interest on the effects of filler content and fiber surface treatment by coupling agent. Surface‐treated CF‐filled HDPE composites increased their tensile strength and impact strength, which is further increased with the addition of CNT. SEM showed that CNT‐coating‐treated CF‐HDPE composites show better dispersion of the filler into the matrix, which results in better interfacial adhesion between the filler and the matrix.

Polyamide-6 (PA6)/carbon fiber (CF) composites were prepared by melt-extrusion via continuous fiber fed during extruding. The mechanical, thermal properties, and crystallization behavior of PA6/CF composites were investigated. It was found that the tensile modulus and strength of the composites were increased with the addition of CF, while their elongations at break were decreased. Scanning electron microscopy observation on the fracture surfaces showed the fine dispersion of CF and strong interfacial adhesion between fibers and matrix. Dynamic mechanical analysis results showed that the storage modulus of PA6/CF composites was improved with the addition of CF. Non-isothermal crystallization analysis showed that the CF plays a role as nucleating agent in PA6 matrix, and the α-form crystalline structure was favorable in the PA6/CF composites, as confirmed from the X-ray diffraction analysis. A trans-crystallization layer around CF could be observed by polarizing optical microscopy, which proved the nucleation effect of carbon fiber surface on the crystallization of PA6. The thermal stability of PA6/CF composites was also enhanced.

In this paper, the surface properties of polyacrylonitrile‐based carbon fibers is improved by electron‐beam (EB) irradiation in maleic anhydride/acetone solution at 100, 150, 200 and 150 KGy. Experimental study of this paper is carried out to identify surface topography, surface chemical composition and functional groups, adsorption ability and interface properties of CF/epoxy composites. The results reveal that the roughness of carbon fiber surface is increased obviously after modification by EB irradiation grafting technology. The ratio value of O/C and the relative content of oxygen functional groups on fiber surface are improved effectively, comparing with the unmodified carbon fiber. Besides, adsorption of carbon fiber on epoxy and the mechanical performance of CF/epoxy composites are clearly enhanced after irradiation grafting modification. Carbon fiber reinforced Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (CF/UHMWPE) composites have been filled with acid treated carbon nanotube to enhance the adhesion. According to the modification, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of composites has been greatly improved. Dynamic wetting method, XPS and SEM are used to examine the microscopic properties of resultant composites. The enhanced ILSS is attributed to the CNT interlock, which improves the wetting between carbon fibers and resins. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Pitch‐based short carbon fibers (CFs) were treated by air oxidation and cryogenic nitrogen, respectively. Thereafter the treated and untreated CFs were incorporated into polyimide (PI) matrix to form composites. The CFs before and after treatment were examined by XPS and SEM.The flexural strength of the specimen was determined in a three‐point test machine and the tribological properties of PI composites sliding against GCr15 steel rings were evaluated on an M‐2000 model ring‐on‐block test rig. The results show that the surface of the treated CFs became rougher. Lots of active groups formed on the CF surface after air oxidation. The treatment can effectively improve the mechanical and tribological properties in their PI composites due to the enhanced fiber‐matrix interfacial bonding. A simple electrochemical approach is developed to prepare reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-wrapped carbon fiber (CF) as a novel support for Pt–Au nanocatalysts. The obtained composite electrodes have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and electrochemical methods. SEM images reveal that the Pt–Au nanoparticles deposited on RGO-wrapped CF (RGO/CF) electrode display smaller particle size and more uniform dispersion than those on the bare CF electrode. Cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, Tafel plots, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses demonstrate that the introduced RGO on CF electrode surface is beneficial to the dispersion of Pt–Au nanoparticles, as a consequence, to the enhancement of the electrocatalytic activity and the antipoisoning ability of Pt–Au towards formic acid electrooxidation.

The mechanical properties of carbon fiber composites depend on the interfacial strength between fiber and epoxy matrix. Different poly (amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers were grafted onto carbon fiber to improve the interfacial strength of the resulting composites. Functional groups on the carbon fiber surface were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The surface morphology of the resulting materials was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscope. The characterization results revealed that PAMAM dendrimers were chemically grafted onto the surface of carbon fiber. More importantly, the mechanical properties of the resulting composites were enhanced owing to the presence of sufficient functional groups on the carbon fiber surface. In addition, after PAMAM containing chair conformations were grafted, the interlaminar shear strength had the highest increase of 53.13%, higher than that of the fiber grafted with PAMAM containing terminated linear amine. This work provides an alternative approach to enhance the mechanical properties of fiber composites by controlling the interface between fiber and epoxy matrix.

Carbon fabric (CF)/phenolic laminates filled with pristine and chromic acid treated ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) microparticles were fabricated. Their interfacial and tribological properties in water environment were comparatively investigated. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the laminates was tested on a universal testing machine (DY35), and the tribological properties were evaluated by a block‐on‐ring tribo‐tester. The worn surfaces and the interfaces of the laminates were respectively analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and field emission SEM (FESEM). The change of the chemical composition of UHMWPE microparticles after chromic acid etching was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The chemical state of carbon fiber surface was examined using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed that the chromic acid treated UHMWPE microparticles had more remarkable effect than the pristine ones on improving not only ILSS and wear resistance of CF/phenolic laminate, but also its immunity to water environment. This should be attributed to the strengthened interfaces in treated UHMWPE/CF/phenolic laminate, which were characterized by the drawn dendritic UHMWPE fibrils firmly clinging on the surfaces of carbon fibers and resin in a Boston ivy‐like manner.
