Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is used for chemical analysis of surfaces. ToF-SIMS is a powerful tool for polymer science because it detects a broad mass range with good mass resolution, thereby distinguishing between polymers that have similar elemental compositions and/or the same types of functional groups. Chemical labeling techniques that enhance contrast, such as deuterating or staining one constituent, are generally unnecessary. ToF-SIMS can generate both two-dimensional images and three-dimensional depth profiles, where each pixel in an image is associated with a complete mass spectrum. This Review begins by introducing the principles of ToF-SIMS measurements, including instrumentation, modes of operation, strategies for data analysis, and strengths/limitations when characterizing polymer surfaces. The sections that follow describe applications in polymer science that benefit from characterization by ToF-SIMS, including thin films and coatings, polymer blends, composites, and electronic materials. The examples selected for discussion showcase the three standard modes of operation (spectral analysis, imaging, and depth profiling) and highlight practical considerations that relate to experimental design and data processing. We conclude with brief comments about broader opportunities for ToF-SIMS in polymer science. 相似文献

This study describes the use of inkjet printing for the preparation of test materials containing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on a biologically relevant matrix and discusses the methods of using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) for their spatially resolved quantification. Evaluation of test materials containing AuNPs with nominal diameters of (30, 80, 100, and 150) nm deposited onto gelatin with loadings ranging from 34 fg up to 67 000 fg per spot suggests that ToF-SIMS has the sensitivity and the dynamic range to quantify NP deposits in a biological matrix at toxicologically relevant concentrations, although it was not capable of reliably determining the size of the AuNPs from the intensity data. Regardless, the ability to extract intensity data from individual regions of interest (ROIs) showed that spatially resolved quantification is possible, even when multiple features exist in a single image and in a single depth profile. The argon gas cluster source used for sputtering led to a matrix removal effect where the matrix surrounding the AuNPs became negligible, which may facilitate the preparation of quantitative test materials. 相似文献

+, n = 1–7 cluster ions has been demonstrated by means of static secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The highly specific signal
enhancement of these primary ions combined with the individual fragmentation pattern of poly(4-vinylphenol) and poly(methyl
methacrylate) is the basic principle for a modified approach of data reduction derived from the well-established g-SIMS procedure.
Based on mass spectra, which correspond to different cluster ion sizes, not only a clear distinction between the two polymers
is feasible but also a further simplification of the data can be demonstrated. It has been successfully proven that characteristic
polymer-relevant species can be refined out of the large amount of unspecific and highly fragmented secondary ions, which
are usually present in SIMS spectra. Therefore, a more precise and direct interpretation of complex organic fragments becomes
feasible, which consequently enables the investigation of even more sophisticated samples. 相似文献

Polymerization reactions of a new aldehyde‐functional benzoxazine (4HBA‐a) were investigated in detail. The curing behavior of 4HBA‐a was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) methods. The results indicate that the disappearance of the aldehyde group from 4HBA‐a and the ring‐opening reaction of 4HBA‐a occur simultaneously. Gases evolved during the curing process of 4HBA‐a were analyzed by thermogravimetric analyzer interfaced with FTIR spectra. The elimination of CO2 is attributed to the oxidation and decarboxylation of the aldehyde groups. In addition, the crosslink sites of the aldehyde groups in the polymer structure are confirmed by model reactions. A possible reactive position should be sited in ortho position of phenol rather than ortho and/or para positions of N‐phenyl ring. The photoinitiated ring‐opening cationic polymerization of a monofunctional benzoxazine, 3‐phenyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐1,3‐benzoxazine, with onium salts such as diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate and triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate as initiators was examined. The structures of the polymers thus formed were complex and related to the ring‐opening process of the protonated monomer either at the oxygen or nitrogen atoms. The phenolic mechanism also contributed, but its influence decreased with decreasing monomer concentration. In the present work we investigate the denaturation of a functional protein, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), under various experimental conditions using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. HRP was immobilized on TiO(2), and the samples were stored under different conditions. The activity of the enzyme was assessed colorimetrically and compared to ToF-SIMS spectra. We show that denaturation of the protein can be monitored using the ToF-SIMS signal of the disulfide bonds, which is related to the tertiary structure of the protein. As disulfide bonds appear in a vast range of proteins, the present findings may be of wide significance; i.e., a tool is provided that can allow the investigation of the presence of an active protein structure by a comparably simple surface analytical method. 相似文献

Surface analysis of the size-fractioned urban aerosols by secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS)
The secondary ion mass spectrometry method (ToF-SIMS) has been applied to the analysis of some mineral and organic species
on the surface layers of airborne urban particulates. Particulate matter was collected on aluminum sheets of the 8-stage Anderson
type cascade impactor from three different sampling sites in the city of Lodz, Poland, which were different in terms of aerosol
source apportionment. The obtained results show that vehicle combustion products occur mainly in fine fraction with aerodynamic
diameters below 1μm. The main contribution to the mineral components comes from direct and traffic related soil resuspension.

Acetylacetonato (acac) complexes of transition metals in the 4th period were examined as catalysts for the ring‐opening polymerization of benzoxazine. This examination revealed that acac complexes of manganese, iron, and cobalt exhibited the highest activity, which was comparable or slightly higher than that exhibited by p‐toluenesulfonic acid. By replacing acac ligand by hexafluoroacetylacetonato (F6‐acac) ligand, the activity of manganese and iron complexes was remarkably enhanced. These metal F6‐acac complexes were tolerant to moisture to allow their use under air without special caution. The surface chemical structures of a series of novel poly(ortho ester) homopolymer and copolymer films prepared using N-methyl- and N-phenyl-ethanolamine (MDE and PDE) have been investigated using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). Systematic fragmentation patterns were observed within the ToF-SIMS spectra up to m/z = 1600, which were readily interpreted in terms of the polymer structures. Cations were detected which could be assigned to structures arising from the diols, the ortho ester species and diads, triads etc. of the monomer, from both the homopolymer and the random portion of the copolymer chains. The analysis of the proposed ion structures suggested two major mechanisms of fragmentation based on the cleavage of the ortho ester bonds involving either the exocyclic or the endocyclic alkoxy group. The Tof-SIMS peak area ratios for ions diagnostic of the diols and the ortho ester species reflected the bulk copolymer composition in a semi-quantitative fashion. The observation of such relationships for high mass cations (up to m/z = 500) is particularly noteworthy and has not been reported previously. These studies allow a dramatic insight into the surface chemical structure of these poly(ortho esters), information which has formed the foundation of current investigations on the mechanisms of the acid-catalysed surface degradation of these polymers. 相似文献

A series of 16 polyarylates, with well-controlled and systematically varying chemistry, has been characterized by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). The polymers are structurally identical except for the incremental additions of C2H4 units to the backbone and sidechain. From the spectra, peaks characteristic of all polyarylates are identified. Furthermore, evaluation of the spectra and identification of unique signals allow classification of the polyarylates according to sidechain and backbone chemistry. 相似文献

A polymer bearing 1,3‐benzoxazine moiety in the side chain was synthesized successfully from poly(allylamine) based on a stepwise strategy consisted of three steps: (1) treatment of poly(allylamine) with salicylaldehyde to convert the amino group in the side chain into the corresponding o‐(iminomethyl)phenol moiety, (2) reduction of the o‐(iminomethyl)phenol to obtain the corresponding o‐(aminomethyl)phenol moiety, and (3) formation of 1,3‐benzoxazine moiety by the reaction of the o‐(aminomethyl)phenol with formaldehyde. The content ratio of benzoxazine moieties and o‐(aminomethyl)phenol moieties in the polymer were tunable by varying amount of formaldehyde. Static time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a powerful surface analysis technique for the characterization of protein films because of its chemical selectivity and surface sensitivity. In this study, static ToF-SIMS and principal component analysis (PCA), a multivariate data analysis method, were combined to probe the orientation of surface-immobilized immunoglobulin G (IgG). IgG orientation can enhance its ability to detect its antigen in immunoassay techniques. The IgG used in this work is the mouse monoclonal anti-human chorionic gonadotropin (anti-hCG). Anti-hCG films on different well-defined substrates have been studied using its F(ab')2 and Fc fragments as references. Atomic force microscopy was used to characterize these protein films before static ToF-SIMS analysis. The results from PCA of ToF-SIMS spectra were related to the antibody primary amino acid composition and its three-dimensional structure. 相似文献

Tandem mass spectrometry measurements have been achieved using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and a post source decay (PSD)-like method. The performance of the method has been demonstrated on model molecules with well-known fragmentation pathways. Several lipids have been fragmented including the phosphocholine ion, phosphatidylcholines, cholesterol and vitamin E. Pure samples were analyzed, and the results compared with those obtained with the same compounds on a quadrupole-TOF hybrid mass spectrometer. 1,3‐benzoxazine 1 , bearing 4‐pyridyl moiety on the nitrogen atom, was synthesized from p‐cresol, 4‐aminopyridine, and paraformaldehyde. The efficient synthesis was achieved by adding acetic acid to suppress the strong basicity caused by the presence of 4‐aminopyridine derivatives. Upon heating 1 at 180 °C, it underwent the thermally induced ring‐opening polymerization. The resulting polymer was composed of two types of repeating unit, i.e., (1) Mannich‐type one (‐phenol‐CH2‐NR‐CH2‐) that can be expected from the general ring‐opening polymerization of conventional benzoxazines and (2) a typical phenolic resin‐type one (‐phenol‐CH2‐phenol‐) induced by release of 4‐aminopyridine and paraformaldehyde (unit B). Well-defined polystyrene homopolymers with surface-adhesive triethoxysilyl end group were synthesized via living carbanionic polymerization, epoxide end-functionalization and subsequent hydrosilylation with triethoxysilane. Grafting-to performance of polymers with various molecular weight (Mn = 3000–14,000 g mol−1) to a silicon surface was examined in dependence of reaction time, polymer concentration, solvent and number of alkoxysilyl end groups. Crosslinkable polymers for surface modification were synthesized by statistical carbanionic copolymerization of 4-vinylbenzocyclobutene (4-VBCB) and styrene, followed by epoxide end-functionalization and triethoxysilane modification (Mn = 4000–14,000 g mol−1). The copolymers were characterized by 1H-NMR, THF-SEC, and matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. In situ 1H-NMR kinetic studies in cyclohexane-d12 provided information regarding the monomer gradient in the polymer chains, with styrene being the more reactive monomer (rs = 2.75, r4-VBCB = 0.23). Thin polymer films on silicon wafers were prepared by grafting-to surface modification under conditions derived for the polystyrene homopolymer. The traceless, thermally induced crosslinking reaction of the benzocyclobutene units was studied by DSC in bulk as well as in 3–6 nm thick polymer films. Crosslinked films were analyzed by atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, and nanoindentation, showing smooth polymer films with an increased modulus. © 2019 The Authors. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polyhydromethylsiloxane (PHMS), and polymethylphenylsiloxane (PMPhS) have been studied by TOF-SIMS to investigate effects of functional group changes on polymer fragmentation mechanisms. Cyclic fragments are observed in the low mass range spectra of PDMS and PHMS, but not in the spectrum of PMPhS. Effects of functional group substitution on the fragmentation mechanisms of polysiloxanes are evident in the high mass range spectra (>1000 Da). Peaks of oligomers cationized by silver dominate the high mass range of the spectra of all low molecular weight polysiloxanes. However, fragmentation patterns of these samples are different. Neutral cyclic fragments cationized by silver are identified in the high mass range of the spectra of PDMS and PHMS, but not in the spectrum of PMPhS. The major fragments of PHMS and PMPhS are [oligomer-14+Ag]+. The PHMS spectrum also shows peaks [oligomer-28+Ag]+. These distinctive fragmentation patterns can be used to identify the polysiloxanes. 相似文献

Polyisoprenes (PIPs) with average molecular weights from 650 to 800,000 Da have been studied by time-of-flight secondary ion mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) in the static mode. Polymer samples were bombarded by argon primary ions, and positive SIMS spectra were collected. Effects of branching and unsaturation in the polymer structure on ion formation were studied. The pendant methyl group showed little tendency to fracture as a cation. In the low mass region, CnH
2n–1
+
appeared to be more intense than CnH
2n+1
+
, attributed to the double bond structure of polyisoprene. Additionally, ion formation varied as a function of polymer molecular weight. Cationized intact oligomers and fragments dominate the high mass region. Oligomer distributions were used to calculate average molecular weights for polyisoprenes. A statistical chain scission mechanism was used to qualitatively explain the formation of five clusters within a unique fragmentation pattern. Detailed studies of the cluster structure pointed out that each cluster contained several species having varied degrees of unsaturation. It is believed that double bond rearrangements occur. 相似文献
