For Toeplitz system of weakly nonlinear equations, by using the separability and strong dominance between the linear and the nonlinear terms and using the circulant and skew-circulant splitting (CSCS) iteration technique, we establish two nonlinear composite iteration schemes, called Picard-CSCS and nonlinear CSCS-like iteration methods, respectively. The advantage of these methods is that they do not require accurate computation and storage of Jacobian matrix, and only need to solve linear sub-systems of constant coefficient matrices. Therefore, computational workloads and computer storage may be saved in actual implementations. Theoretical analysis shows that these new iteration methods are local convergent under suitable conditions. Numerical results show that both Picard-CSCS and nonlinear CSCS-like iteration methods are feasible and effective for some cases.

Newton iteration method can be used to find the minimal non‐negative solution of a certain class of non‐symmetric algebraic Riccati equations. However, a serious bottleneck exists in efficiency and storage for the implementation of the Newton iteration method, which comes from the use of some direct methods in exactly solving the involved Sylvester equations. In this paper, instead of direct methods, we apply a fast doubling iteration scheme to inexactly solve the Sylvester equations. Hence, a class of inexact Newton iteration methods that uses the Newton iteration method as the outer iteration and the doubling iteration scheme as the inner iteration is obtained. The corresponding procedure is precisely described and two practical methods of monotone convergence are algorithmically presented. In addition, the convergence property of these new methods is studied and numerical results are given to show their feasibility and effectiveness for solving the non‐symmetric algebraic Riccati equations.

The discretizations of many differential equations by the finite difference or the finite element methods can often result in a class of system of weakly nonlinear equations. In this paper, by applying the two-tage iteration technique and in accordance with the special properties of this weakly nonlinear system, we first propose a general two-tage iterative method through the two-tage splitting of the system matrix. Then, by applying the accelerated overrelaxation (AOR) technique of the linear iterative methods, we present a two-tage AOR method, which particularly uses the AOR iteration as the inner iteration and is substantially a relaxed variant of the afore-presented method. For these two classes of methods, we establish their local convergence theories, and precisely estimate their asymptotic convergence factors under some suitable assumptions when the involved nonlinear mapping is only B-differentiable. When the system matrix is either a monotone matrix or an H-matrix, and the nonlinear mapping is a P-bounded mapping, we thoroughly set up the global convergence theories of these new methods. Moreover, under the assumptions that the system matrix is monotone and the nonlinear mapping is isotone, we discuss the monotone convergence properties of the new two-tage iteration methods, and investigate the influence of the matrix splittings as well as the relaxation parameters on the convergence behaviours of these methods. Numerical computations show that our new methods are feasible and efficient for solving the system of weakly nonlinear equations. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

The finite difference or the finite element discretizations of many differential or integral equations often result in a class of systems of weakly nonlinear equations. In this paper, by reasonably applying both the multisplitting and the two-stage iteration techniques, and in accordance with the special properties of this system of weakly nonlinear equations, we first propose a general multisplitting two-stage iteration method through the two-stage multiple splittings of the system matrix. Then, by applying the accelerated overrelaxation (AOR) technique of the linear iterative methods, we present a multisplitting two-stage AOR method, which particularly uses the AOR-like iteration as inner iteration and is substantially a relaxed variant of the afore-presented method. These two methods have a forceful parallel computing function and are much more suitable to the high-speed multiprocessor systems. For these two classes of methods, we establish their local convergence theories, and precisely estimate their asymptotic convergence factors under some suitable assumptions when the involved nonlinear mapping is only directionally differentiable. When the system matrix is either an H-matrix or a monotone matrix, and the nonlinear mapping is a P-bounded mapping, we thoroughly set up the global convergence theories of these new methods. Moreover, under the assumptions that the system matrix is monotone and the nonlinear mapping is isotone, we discuss the monotone convergence properties of the new multisplitting two-stage iteration methods, and investigate the influence of the multiple splittings as well as the relaxation parameters upon the convergence behaviours of these methods. Numerical computations show that our new methods are feasible and efficient for parallel solving of the system of weakly nonlinear equations. Chen and Tseng (Math Program 95:431?C474, 2003) extended non-interior continuation methods for solving linear and nonlinear complementarity problems to semidefinite complementarity problems (SDCP), in which a system of linear equations is exactly solved at each iteration. However, for problems of large size, solving the linear system of equations exactly can be very expensive. In this paper, we propose a version of one of the non-interior continuation methods for monotone SDCP presented by Chen and Tseng that incorporates inexactness into the linear system solves. Only one system of linear equations is inexactly solved at each iteration. The global convergence and local superlinear convergence properties of the method are given under mild conditions.

In this paper, we use the variational iteration technique to suggest some new iterative methods for solving nonlinear equations f(x)=0. We also discuss the convergence criteria of these new iterative methods. Comparison with other similar methods is also given. These new methods can be considered as an alternative to the Newton method. We also give several examples to illustrate the efficiency of these methods. This technique can be used to suggest a wide class of new iterative methods for solving system of nonlinear equations.

For the large sparse systems of weakly nonlinear equations arising in the discretizations of many classical differential and integral equations, this paper presents a class of asynchronous parallel multisplitting two-stage iteration methods for getting their solutions by the high-speed multiprocessor systems. Under suitable assumptions, we study the global convergence properties of these asynchronous multisplitting two-stage iteration methods. Moreover, for this class of new methods, we establish their local convergence theories, and precisely estimate their asymptotic convergence factors under some reasonable assumptions when the involved nonlinear mapping is only assumed to be directionally differentiable. Numerical computations show that our new methods are feasible and efficient for parallely solving the system of weakly nonlinear equations.

The work presents an adaptation of iteration method for solving a class of thirst order partial nonlinear differential equation with mixed derivatives. The class of partial differential equations present here is not solvable with neither the method of Green function, the most usual iteration methods for instance variational iteration method, homotopy perturbation method and Adomian decomposition method, nor integral transform for instance Laplace,Sumudu, Fourier and Mellin transform. We presented the stability and convergence of the used method for solving this class of nonlinear chaotic equations.Using the proposed method, we obtained exact solutions to this kind of equations.

Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting(HSS) method has been proved quite successfully in solving large sparse non-Hermitian positive definite systems of linear equations. Recently, by making use of HSS method as inner iteration, Newton-HSS method for solving the systems of nonlinear equations with non-Hermitian positive definite Jacobian matrices has been proposed by Bai and Guo. It has shown that the Newton-HSS method outperforms the Newton-USOR and the Newton-GMRES iteration methods. In this paper, a class of modified Newton-HSS methods for solving large systems of nonlinear equations is discussed. In our method, the modified Newton method with R-order of convergence three at least is used to solve the nonlinear equations, and the HSS method is applied to approximately solve the Newton equations. For this class of inexact Newton methods, local and semilocal convergence theorems are proved under suitable conditions. Moreover, a globally convergent modified Newton-HSS method is introduced and a basic global convergence theorem is proved. Numerical results are given to confirm the effectiveness of our method.

In this paper we consider constructing some higher-order modifications of Newton’s method for solving nonlinear equations which increase the order of convergence of existing iterative methods by one or two or three units. This construction can be applied to any iteration formula, and per iteration the resulting methods add only one additional function evaluation to increase the order. Some illustrative examples are provided and several numerical results are given to show the performance of the presented methods.

In this paper, we use the variational iteration technique to suggest and analyze some new iterative methods for solving a system of nonlinear equations. We prove that the new method has fourth-order convergence. Several numerical examples are given to illustrate the efficiency and performance of the new iterative methods. Our results can be viewed as a refinement and improvement of the previously known results.

In this paper, a general family of Steffensen-type methods with optimal order of convergence for solving nonlinear equations is constructed by using Newton’s iteration for the direct Newtonian interpolation. It satisfies the conjecture proposed by Kung and Traub [H.T. Kung, J.F. Traub, Optimal order of one-point and multipoint iteration, J. Assoc. Comput. Math. 21 (1974) 634-651] that an iterative method based on m evaluations per iteration without memory would arrive at the optimal convergence of order 2m−1. Its error equations and asymptotic convergence constants are obtained. Finally, it is compared with the related methods for solving nonlinear equations in the numerical examples.

Based on separable property of the linear and the nonlinear terms and on the Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting of the coefficient matrix, we present the Picard-HSS and the nonlinear HSS-like iteration methods for solving a class of large scale systems of weakly nonlinear equations. The advantage of these methods over the Newton and the Newton-HSS iteration methods is that they do not require explicit construction and accurate computation of the Jacobian matrix, and only need to solve linear sub-systems of constant coefficient matrices. Hence, computational workloads and computer memory may be saved in actual implementations. Under suitable conditions, we establish local convergence theorems for both Picard-HSS and nonlinear HSS-like iteration methods. Numerical implementations show that both Picard-HSS and nonlinear HSS-like iteration methods are feasible, effective, and robust nonlinear solvers for this class of large scale systems of weakly nonlinear equations.

In this paper, we present new iteration methods with cubic convergence for solving nonlinear equations. The main advantage of the new methods are free from second derivatives and it permit that the first derivative is zero in some points. Analysis of efficiency shows that the new methods can compete with Newton’s method and the classical third-order methods. Numerical results indicate that the new methods are effective and have definite practical utility.

We construct a novel multi-step iterative method for solving systems of nonlinear equations by introducing a parameter θ to generalize the multi-step Newton method while keeping its order of convergence and computational cost. By an appropriate selection of θ, the new method can both have faster convergence and have larger radius of convergence. The new iterative method only requires one Jacobian inversion per iteration, and therefore, can be efficiently implemented using Krylov subspace methods. The new method can be used to solve nonlinear systems of partial differential equations, such as complex generalized Zakharov systems of partial differential equations, by transforming them into systems of nonlinear equations by discretizing approaches in both spatial and temporal independent variables such as, for instance, the Chebyshev pseudo-spectral discretizing method. Quite extensive tests show that the new method can have significantly faster convergence and significantly larger radius of convergence than the multi-step Newton method.
