The hot water storage tank (for stratified thermal storage) with a heat pump draws a lot of attention nowadays due to its high performance. In Japan, reheating of the bath is commonly used, and as this mode, the jet injects horizontally at the middle of the tank, so the temperature distribution of the tank changes complexly with time. Hence a model is needed to simulate this phenomenon, precisely. Additionally, in the process of designing a hot water storage system, it is necessary to simulate temperature distribution quickly, since a test run itself is a time consuming process. In this study, visualization experiments were performed using tracer particles and thermo-sensitive liquid crystals. Experiments were also carried out to find the unsteady temperature distribution in a tank when the positively or negatively buoyant jet was injected horizontally in the middle of the tank whose size is limited and has an influence from the opposite wall.If the momentum effect of the buoyant jet is stronger than that of buoyancy, the buoyant jet impinge against the opposite wall of the tank, and a vortex was observed near the opposite wall. Empirical formulas were proposed to predict the height of the vortex “Zb” under various conditions, such as the momentum and the buoyancy of the buoyant jet, and the Prandtl number of the tank water. Furthermore, the 3D-CFD was carried out to supplement the 3D behavior of the inner tank fluid.A one dimensional model, “uniformly distributed injection model”, for simulating temperature distribution was proposed. The performance of the model was verified by comparing the results with the unsteady temperature distribution obtained experimentally. The model was also compared with the measurements obtained using a commercially available hot water storage system. Both results showed good agreements. Hence adequacy of the model was clarified.

With the development of current energy economy, it is necessary to improve the product distribution of fluid catalytic cracking process, which is achieved by a riser reactor with double-level of nozzles. The new riser is constructed by adding a level of secondary nozzle 0.5 m below the main nozzle of traditional riser. This paper investigates the gas-solids flow and oil-catalyst matching feature based on the optical fiber and tracer technologies. According to the distribution of solids holdup, particle velocity and dimensionless jet concentration, the feedstock injection zone can be divided into the upstream flow control region, the main flow control region, and the secondary flow control region in the radial direction. The size of the regions is changed by the jet gas velocity and axial height. There is a poor match of secondary nozzle jet to particles below the main nozzle. The jet gas from secondary nozzles can improve the matching effect of oil-catalyst near the wall and reduce the probability of coking above the main nozzle.

Oscillation flow induced by underwater supersonic gas jets
This paper describes an experimental study on the oscillation flow characteristics of submerged supersonic gas jets issued from Laval nozzles. The flow pattern during the jet development and the jet expansion feedback phenomenon are studied using a high-speed camera and a pressure measurement system. The experimental results indicate that along the downstream distance, the jet has three flow regimes: (1) momentum jet; (2) buoyant jet; (3) plume. In the region near the nozzle exit a so-called bulge phenomenon is found. Bulging of the jet occurs many times before the more violent jet expansion feedback occurs. During the feedback process, the jet diameter can become several times that of the original one depending on the jet Mach number. The frequencies of the jet bulging and the jet expansion feedback are measured.

Impinging jet combusting flows on granite plates are studied. A mathematical model for calculating heat release in turbulent impinging premixed flames is developed. The combustion including radiative heat transfer and local extinction effects, and flow characteristics are modeled using a finite volume computational approach. Two different eddy viscosity turbulence models, namely the standard k–ɛ and the RNG k–ɛ model with and without radiation (discrete transfer model) are assessed. The heat released predictions are compared with experimental data and the agreement is satisfactory only when both radiative heat transfer and local extinction modeling are taken into account. The results indicate that the main effect of radiation is the decrease of temperature values near the jet stagnation point and along the plate surface. Radiation increases temperature gradients and affects predicted turbulence levels independently of the closure model used. Also, the RNG k–ɛ predicts higher temperatures close the solid plate, with and without radiative heat transfer. Received on 13 November 2000 / Published online: 29 November 2001  相似文献

The near field dynamics of transitional buoyant reactive jets established on noncircular geometries, including a rectangular nozzle with an aspect ratio of 2:1 and a square nozzle with the same cross-sectional area, are investigated by three-dimensional spatial direct numerical simulations. Without applying external perturbations at the inflow boundary, large vortical structures develop naturally in the flow field due to buoyancy effects. Simulation results and analysis describe the details and clarify mechanisms of vortex dynamics of the noncircular buoyant reactive jets. The interaction between density gradients and gravity initiates the flow vorticity. Among the major vorticity transport terms, the gravitational term mainly promotes flow vorticity in the cross-streamwise direction. For the baroclinic torque, it can either create or destroy flow vorticity depending on the local flow structure. The vortex stretching term has different effects on the streamwise and cross-streamwise vorticity. Streamwise vorticity is mainly created by vortex stretching, while this term can either create or destroy cross-streamwise vorticity. Under the coupling effects of buoyancy and noncircular nozzle geometry, three-dimensional vortex interactions lead to the transitional behavior of the reactive jets. Simulations also show that the rectangular jet is more vortical than the square jet. The rectangular jet has a stronger tendency of transition to turbulence at the downstream due to the aspect ratio effect. Mean flow property calculations show that the rectangular buoyant reactive jet has a higher entrainment rate than its square counterpart. Received 13 December 2000 and accepted 24 July 2001  相似文献

Three‐dimensional (3D) numerical study is presented to investigate the turbulent flow in meandering compound open channels with trapezoidal cross‐sections. The flow simulation is carried out by solving the 3D Reynolds‐averaged continuity and Navier–Stokes equations with Reynolds stress equation model (RSM) for steady‐state flow. Finite volume method (FVM) is applied to numerically solve the governing equations of fluid flow. The velocity magnitude, tangential velocity, transverse velocity and Reynolds stresses are calculated for various flow conditions. Good agreement between the simulated and available laboratory measurements was obtained, indicating that the RSM can accurately predict the complicated flow phenomenon. Comparison of the calculated secondary currents of four cases (one being inbank flow and other three being overbank flow) with different water depths reveals that (i) the inbank flow exhibits different flow behaviors from that of the overbank flow does and (ii) the water depth has significant effects on the magnitude and direction of secondary currents. PIV measurements were performed to provide insight into the effect of serrated (chevron) nozzles on the flow field of a coaxial circular jet. The serrations were tested on the primary nozzle. Mean flow results showed that the chevron effectively redistributes momentum from the high velocity center stream outward to the lower velocity secondary stream by creating lateral jets. This leads to a more rapid decay of the peak jet velocity and a consequent reduction in the length of the jet potential core. Local increases of up to 65% in the outer stream velocity were measured. The interaction of the secondary jets with the lower velocity outer stream produces increases in turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) near the center nozzle lip. These flow field effects correlate with the jet’s acoustic emissions: Reduction of low-frequency noise due to large scale mixing and potential core shortening, and increased high-frequency noise due to increased near-field turbulence.

Vortical structures formed in evolving jets are important in applications such as fuel injection in diesel engines and fuel leaks. When the jet fluid is different from the ambient fluid, the buoyancy can play an important role in determining the jet flow structure, and hence, the entrainment and fluid mixing processes. In the present study, a jet of helium injected in air is investigated, with emphasis placed on delineating the buoyancy effects on vector–scalar fields during the starting phase. We utilize a computational model, previously validated to predict the flow field of low-density gas jets. The model incorporates finite volume approach to solve the transport equation of helium mass fraction coupled with conservation equations of mixture mass and momentum. Computations were performed for a laminar jet to characterize the advancing jet front, and to capture the formation and propagation of vortex rings and the related pinch-off process. Results show significant effects of buoyancy on jet advancement, as well as on vorticity and helium concentration in the core of the vortex rings.

The large-scale vortical structures produced by an impinging density jet in shallow crossflow were numerically investigated in detail using RNG turbulence model. The scales, formation mechanism and evolution feature of the upstream wall vortex in relation to stagnation point and the Scarf vortex in near field were analyzed. The computed characteristic scales of the upstream vortex show distinguished three-dimensionality and vary with the velocity ratio and the water depth. The Scarf vortex in the near field plays an important role in the lateral concentration distributions of the impinging jet in crossflow. When the velocity ratio is relatively small, there exists a distinct lateral high concentration aggregation zone at the lateral edge between the bottom layer wall jet and the ambient crossflow, which is dominated by the Scarf vortex in the near field.

Results of large eddy simulations in a subsonic isothermal turbulent jet exhausting from a circular nozzle into a submerged space or a cocurrent flow are presented. The flow is described by space-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and by the RNG model of subgrid scale viscosity. Results computed for different values of the cocurrency parameter are compared with available results of numerical simulations and experimental data. The results obtained are found to agree well with measured data and to confirm the basic laws of variation of gas-dynamic and fluctuating parameters of submerged and cocurrent jets.

In gas–solid flat-base spout bed with a jet, the flow of particles must go through an intermediate regime where both kinetic/collisional and frictional contributions play a role. In this paper, the statistical framework is proposed to define the generalized granular temperature which sums up the configurational temperature and translational granular temperature. The configurational temperature, translational and rotational granular temperatures of particles are simulated by means of CFD-DEM (discrete element method) in a 3D flat-base spout bed with a jet. The configurational temperatures of particles are calculated from instantaneous overlaps of particles. The translational and rotational granular temperatures of particles are calculated from instantaneous translational and angular velocities of particles. Roughly, the simulated translational and rotational granular temperatures increase, reach maximum, and then decrease with the increase of solids volume fractions. However, the configurational temperature increases with the increase of solids volume fractions. At high solid volume fraction, the predicted configurational temperatures are larger than the translational and rotational granular temperatures, indicating that the rate of energy dissipation do contributes by contact deformation of elastic particles. The generalized granular temperature is proposed to show the relation between the variance of the fluctuation velocity of deformation and the variance of the translational fluctuation velocity of particles. The constitutive relations of particle pressure, viscosity, granular conductivity of fluctuating energy and energy dissipation in rapid-intermediate-dense granular flows are correlated to the generalized granular temperature. The variations of particle pressure, shear viscosity, energy dissipation and granular conductivity are analyzed on the basis of generalized granular temperature in a flat-base spout bed with a jet. The axial velocities of particles predicted by a gas–solid two-fluid model of rapid-intermediate-dense granular flows agree with experimental results in a spout bed.

Stratified flows with small density difference commonly exist in geophysical and engineering applications, which often involve interaction of turbulence and buoyancy effect. A combined particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) system is developed to measure the velocity and density fields in a dense jet discharged horizontally into a tank filled with light fluid. The illumination of PIV particles and excitation of PLIF dye are achieved by a dual-head pulsed Nd:YAG laser and two CCD cameras with a set of optical filters. The procedure for matching refractive indexes of two fluids and calibration of the combined system are presented, as well as a quantitative analysis of the measurement uncertainties. The flow structures and mixing dynamics within the central vertical plane are studied by examining the averaged parameters, turbulent kinetic energy budget, and modeling of momentum flux and buoyancy flux. At downstream, profiles of velocity and density display strong asymmetry with respect to its center. This is attributed to the fact that stable stratification reduces mixing and unstable stratification enhances mixing. In stable stratification region, most of turbulence production is consumed by mean-flow convection, whereas in unstable stratification region, turbulence production is nearly balanced by viscous dissipation. Experimental data also indicate that at downstream locations, mixing length model performs better in mixing zone of stable stratification regions, whereas in other regions, eddy viscosity/diffusivity models with static model coefficients represent effectively momentum and buoyancy flux terms. The measured turbulent Prandtl number displays strong spatial variation in the stratified jet.

This investigation concerns numerical calculation of turbulent forced convective heat transfer and fluid flow in straight ducts using the RNG (Re-Normalized Group) turbulence method.

A computational method has been developed to predict the turbulent Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat fluxes in ducts with different turbulence models. The turbulent Reynolds stresses and other turbulent flow quantities are predicted with the RNG κ?ε model and the RNG non-linear κ-ε model of Speziale. The turbulent heat fluxes are modeled by the simple eddy diffusivity (SED) concept, GGDH and WET methods. Two wall functions are used, one for the velocity field and one for the temperature field. All the models arc implemented for an arbitrary three dimensional duct.

Fully developed condition is achieved by imposing cyclic boundary conditions in the main flow direction. The numerical approach is based on the finite volume technique with a non-staggered grid arrangement. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by using the SIMPLEC-algorithm. The convective terms are treated by the QUICK, scheme while the diffusive terms are handled by the central-difference scheme. The hybrid scheme is used for solving the κ and ε equations.

The overall comparison between the models is presented in terms of friction factor and Nusselt number. The secondary flow generation is also of major concern.

The problem of interaction between a two-dimensional transverse gas jet emerging from a slot on a flat plate and a supersonic stream is considered. Several theoretical methods based on various approaches and physical models have been proposed to determine the characteristics of such a flow. The following fundamental directions can be isolated: a quasi-one-dimensional method [1], use of blast theory [2], and methods based on the equivalence of the effect of the jet and some solid on the external flow [3, 4]. However, the listed computational schemes [1–4] do not permit any clarification of the flow configuration in the jet and in the outer stream (the shock configuration, the jet boundaries, the distribution of the gasdynamic parameters in the flow field, etc.). Extensive experimental investigations of this phenomenon have been carried out simultaneously with the development of the theoretical methods, wherein the flow picture was determined, the pressure distribution was measured in the interaction domain, etc. [5, 6]. A computation method is proposed in this paper which will permit a detailed investigation of the flow structure in the jet and in the outer flow outside the separation region. Underlying the method is a hypothesis verified experimentally: The separating streamline in the mixing layer of the separated boundary layer (the “constant mass∝ line) intersects the jet boundary at the point of maximum jet standoff from the nozzle exit towards the incoming stream.  相似文献

The initial stage of the development of a wall jet under the influence of strong external turbulence has been studied in a novel shear-flow mixing-box experiment. A fully developed channel flow of depth h (40 mm) enters along the top wall of a cuboidal box of height 11 h in which a combination of oscillatory and turbulent velocity fluctuations are generated by a vertical oscillating grid at the midplane 5 h below the wall. When the ratio of the rms grid-generated velocity fluctuations, , to the local mean velocity inside the wall jet layer, u, is greater than about 0.1, significant changes are observed in the mean shear profile and in the eddy structure of the wall jet. The wall jet thickness increases by approximately 25% but the maximum velocity decreases by less than 10% compared to the case without the external turbulence. Fluctuations of the streamwise velocity component increase as expected in the outer part of the wall jet, but the most significant result is the increase by 70% of the fluctuations in the boundary layer close to the wall. CFD simulations using the k-ɛ RNG of the FLUENT CFD Code do not properly model the effect of the large scale external turbulence in this experiment. However, an artificial method, which introduces a series of small inlet/outlet jets to represent external turbulence, approximately simulates the overall effects of the oscillating grid on the wall jet, but does not simulate the amplification of the near wall turbulence.
