The Characterization in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and James Joyce＇ s Aesthetics

In his novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, James Joyce minimized the position of minor characters in order to present the central posifon of the hero. This kind of characterization is closely related with Joy＇s aesthetics, that is Joyce＇s principle of ＂wholeness＂. In this paper, the close relationship between the characterization and Joyce＇s ＂wholeness＂ aesthetics will be discussed to prove that Joyce em- ployed his aesthetics in his art creation.     

On Ernest Hemingway＇s Views about Women

Emest Hermngway is famous for his ＂masculinity＂ style in his writing. Meanwhile, he also describes female characters and their strengths and reveals his own sensitivity to gender issues. His early exposure to women is from his upbringing dominatrix. His failure on marriage plays an important role on his works. In his mind, women are the combination of angel and evil. They act elegantly and attract men＇s heart, but sometimes they are changeable. Catherine Barkley is a typical angel except her suspect. Catherine Bourne is an evil though she is charming. Brett Ashley is attractive, but she can＇t love whom she loves. That is a society without choice. Women＇s feelings attach to men. They show their right to love, to change. Even to escape the cruel reality. At the same time they know they can＇ t cast the society. Hemingway pays more attention on women＇s feelings in his writing. On the one hand, he respects women＇s elegance, beauty and view on love. He wants to get love and care from them. On the other hand, he holds in awe on women. He assumes women are changeable, and is afraid of being hurt. Hemingway＇ s mind is full of conflicts, and his love, hatred, sympathy belong to not merely male, but also female. No matter she is angel or evil, he can＇t help himself and his readers falling in love with these women of extraordinary beauty.     

Distortion of Personality --On Willy Loman＇s Death

Death of a Salesman, American playwright Arthur Miller＇s masterpiece, describes the tragic fate of Willy Loman, a middle-class salesman. Some critics claim that the play is an attack upon the ＂American dream＂ and that willy is the victim of brutal economic system. However, on further studying the play, the writer draws the conclusion that Willy is not so much a victim of ＂American dream＂ as he is the victim of his own weakness in personality.
