This study explored how mathematics content and methods courses for preservice elementary and middle school teachers could be improved through the integration of a set of instructional materials based on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). A set of eight instructional modules was developed and tested. The study involved 7 university instructors and 542 preservice teachers (PSTs) from three different universities. A quasi‐experimental nonequivalent groups design was used for this study in which the following data sources were collected and analyzed. Three versions of a Learning Mathematics for Teaching test were given to assess PSTs‘ mathematical content knowledge for teaching: (a) Elementary Number Concepts and Operations—Content Knowledge; (b) Elementary Geometry—Content Knowledge; and (c) Middle School Number Concepts and Operations—Content Knowledge. In addition, the Mathematics Teacher Efficacy Beliefs Instrument was given to assess PSTs’ teacher efficacy beliefs. Test results were analyzed using paired samples t‐tests. Findings suggest that use of instructional materials, based on NAEP, with PSTs results in increases in their mathematical content knowledge for teaching and in their teaching efficacy beliefs.  相似文献

In this paper I report findings from a four year study of beginning elementary school teachers which investigated development in their mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT). The study took a developmental research approach, in that the teachers and the researcher collaborated to develop the mathematics teaching of the teachers, while also trying to understand how such development occurred and might be facilitated. The Knowledge Quartet (KQ) framework was used as a tool to support focused reflection on the mathematical content of teaching, with the aim of promoting development in mathematical content knowledge. Although I focused primarily on whether and how focused reflection using the KQ would promote development, it was impossible to separate this from other influences, and in this paper I discuss the ways in which reflection was found to interrelate with other areas of influence. I suggest that by helping the teachers to focus on the content of their mathematics teaching, within the context of their experience in classrooms and of working with others, the KQ framework supported development in the MKT of teachers in the study.  相似文献

This study investigated preservice elementary teachers' achievement goal orientations for learning mathematics and the relationship of those goals to their attitudes toward mathematics. Self‐report instruments were administered to assess three achievement goals—mastery, performance‐approach, and performance‐avoid, and three constructs of attitude—confidence in learning mathematics, usefulness of mathematics, and mathematics as a male domain. The preservice teachers were higher in mastery goals than in performance goals, and performance‐avoid goals were higher than performance‐approach goals. Mastery goals correlated positively to all three constructs of attitude. Since mathematics classes are traditionally performance‐oriented, these results suggest a mismatch between personal and classroom goals that could result in negative attitudes and the adoption of maladaptive performance‐avoid goals. These findings suggest that mathematics content courses for preservice elementary teachers should be taught in a classroom climate that supports and encourages mastery goals.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to understand the mathematical content knowledge new teachers have both before and after taking a mathematics methods course in the NYCTF program. Further, the purpose was to understand the attitudes toward mathematics and concepts of self‐efficacy that Teaching Fellows had over the course of the semester. The sample included 42 new Teaching Fellows who were given a mathematics content test, attitudes toward mathematics questionnaire, and teaching self‐efficacy questionnaire at the beginning and end of the semester. Further, the teachers kept teaching and learning journals. Findings revealed a significant increase in both mathematical content knowledge and positive attitudes toward mathematics. Additionally, Teaching Fellows were found to have positive attitudes and high self‐efficacy at the end of the semester, and relationships were found between attitudes and self‐efficacy. Finally, Teaching Fellows generally found that classroom management was the biggest issue in their teaching, and that problem solving and numeracy were the most important topics addressed in their learning. Future studies should address self‐efficacy differences between preservice and in‐service teachers and the effects of alternative certification teacher knowledge, attitudes toward mathematics, and self‐efficacy on students in the classroom.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to further the understanding of how preservice teachers construct teacher knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge of elementary mathematics and science in a school‐based setting and the extent of knowledge construction. Evidence of knowledge construction (its acquisition, its dimensions, and the social context) was collected through the use of a qualitative methodology. The methods course was content‐specific with instruction in elementary mathematics and science. Learning experiences were based on national standards with a constructivist instructional approach and immediate access to field experiences. Analysis and synthesis of data revealed an extensive acquisition of teacher knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge. Learning venues were discovered to be the conduits of learning in a situated learning context. As in this study, content‐specific, school‐based experiences may afford preservice teachers greater opportunities to focus on content and instructional strategies at deeper levels; to address anxieties typically associated with the teaching of elementary mathematics and science; and to become more confident and competent teachers. Gains in positive attitudes and confidence in teaching mathematics and science were identified as direct results of this experience.  相似文献

To make progress toward ambitious and equitable goals for students’ mathematical development, teachers need opportunities to develop specialized ways of knowing mathematics such as mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) for their work with students in the classroom. Professional learning communities (PLCs) are a common model used to support focused teacher collaboration and, in turn, foster teacher development, instructional improvement, and student outcomes. However, there is a lack of specificity in what is known about teachers’ work in PLCs and what teachers can gain from those experiences, despite broad claims of their benefit. We discuss an investigation of the work of secondary mathematics teachers in PLCs at two high schools to describe and explicate possible opportunities for teachers to develop the mathematical knowledge needed for the work of teaching and the ways in which these opportunities may be pursued or hindered. The findings show that, without pointed focus on mathematical content, opportunities to develop MKT can be rare, even among mathematics teachers. Two detailed images of teacher discussion are shared to highlight these claims. This article contributes to the ongoing discussion about the affordances and limitations of PLCs for mathematics teachers, considerations for their use, and how they can be supported.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the adaptability of the US-based mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) geometry measures for use to study Indonesian elementary teachers’ MKT geometry. We selected the geometry scales Form A and Form B, and then adapted the items using a framework developed by Delaney et al. (J Math Teach Educ 11(3):171–197, 2008). We administrated the adapted learning mathematics for teaching measures to 210 elementary and middle school teachers. During translation and adaptation of the measures, issues arose regarding the mathematical substance of the items related to the use of inclusive and exclusive definitions of shapes. Psychometric analyses confirmed that these items were more difficult for the Indonesian elementary teachers compared to the US sample. Implications for future direction for item adaptation to measure Indonesia teachers’ MKT are presented.  相似文献

Research interest in the professional knowledge of mathematics teachers has grown considerably in recent years. In the COACTIV project, tests of secondary mathematics teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and content knowledge (CK) were developed and implemented in a sample of teachers whose classes participated in the PISA 2003/04 longitudinal assessment in Germany. The present article investigates the validity of the COACTIV constructs of PCK and CK. To this end, the COACTIV tests of PCK and CK were administered to various “contrast populations,” namely, candidate mathematics teachers, mathematics students, teachers of biology and chemistry, and advanced school students. The hypotheses for each population’s performance in the PCK and CK tests were formulated and empirically tested. In addition, the article compares the COACTIV approach with related conceptualizations and findings of two other research groups.  相似文献

Our study examined ways preservice teachers (PSTs) make connections between teaching practices and use of student resources that support productive struggle and promote equity. Our research questions are: (1) How do PSTs notice and describe the equity-based mathematics teaching practice of leveraging student resources to support student struggles? and (2) In what ways do PSTs make connections to and interpret the role student resources play in the resolution of students’ mathematical struggles? The qualitative study examined 39 PSTs in a mathematics content course for PSTs. Data come from a video analysis assignment where PSTs described their mathematical interpretations of the student struggle(s) and teacher’s use of student resources to support the struggle resolution. Findings show that PSTs noticed teacher moves that leveraged student’s mathematical thinking and linguistic funds of knowledge and based the productive level of the struggle on actions built upon peers, linguistic knowledge and prior mathematical knowledge.  相似文献

This quantitative study investigated the relationships among practicing elementary teachers’ (N = 153) beliefs about mathematics and its teaching and learning, mathematics anxiety, and instructional practices in mathematics. When viewed singly, the findings reveal the teachers with higher levels of mathematics anxiety tend to use less standards‐based instruction and those with beliefs oriented toward a problem‐solving view of mathematics reported more standards‐based teaching. A combined analysis shows that after controlling for mathematical beliefs, teaching longevity, and educational degree attainment, there is no relationship between teachers’ mathematics anxiety and instructional practices. These findings suggest a spurious relationship between anxiety and practices, with beliefs having the strongest relationship with practices. Several suggestions for positively influencing the mathematical beliefs and affect in general of elementary teachers while learning mathematics are offered.  相似文献

Despite the importance of computational estimation skill for the improvement of number sense, little research exists on preservice teachers’ estimation skills and their view on estimation in the US context. This study examined the computational estimation skill of 58 preservice elementary teachers (PSTs) and its relationship to their views of the meaning of estimation and the importance of teaching it. Three sets of instruments were used: an estimation task, a computational task, and a belief survey. Results indicated that PSTs performed differently depending on the types of operations on the estimation test. It was also found that different types of problems elicited different strategies. Furthermore, the intervention of the study, along with five other factors were found to significantly correlate with estimation skills. The five factors include PSTs’ mathematical knowledge, their reported confidence about estimation skills, their self-reported knowledge about calculator use in instruction, their views of estimation in teaching mathematics, and their definition of estimation. A negative correlation was documented for the knowledge of calculator use in instruction, and positive correlations were present for other factors. Implications are discussed in accordance with these findings.  相似文献

Despite historical national efforts to improve elementary science education, science instruction continues to be marginalized, varying by state. This study was designed to address the ongoing challenge of educating elementary preservice teachers (PSTs) to teach science. Elementary PSTs are one of the science education community's major links to schools and science education reform. However, they often lack a strong background in science, knowledge of effective science teaching strategies, and consequently have low confidence and self‐efficacy. This investigation explored the initial learning of elementary PSTs using an interdisciplinary model of a scientific classroom discourse community during a science methods course. Findings post‐methods course suggested that the PSTs gained confidence in how to teach inquiry‐based elementary science and recognized inquiry‐based science as an effective means for engaging student learning. Additionally, PSTs embraced the interdisciplinary model as one that benefits students' learning and effectively uses limited time in a school day.  相似文献

This study examined the impact a problem-solving based mathematics content course for preservice elementary education teachers (PSTs) had on challenging the beliefs they held with respect to mathematics and themselves as doers of mathematics. Nine PSTs were interviewed to gain insight into changes that occurred to their belief systems and what aspect(s) of the course were instrumental in producing those changes. Surveys to measure how strongly PSTs subscribed to five mathematical beliefs were administered to 137 PSTs who were enrolled in the course. Significant positive changes (p < .01) were observed for four of the five beliefs. When changes were studied by achievement level, students with final grades of A or B showed statistically significant changes (p < .005) in three of the five beliefs. Students who were interviewed consistently reported increased confidence in their mathematical abilities as a result of the course.  相似文献

Preservice teachers (PSTs) participated in Family Science Learning Events (FSLEs) at a university designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution. PSTs were required by the instructor to conceive and design culturally relevant science activities as well as implement these activities with K‐8 students and their families during three separate FSLEs each semester. After school venues included elementary and middle schools located in ethnically diverse school districts. Data collected from these future teachers included qualitative PST reflections, lesson plans, project board/activity evaluation by peers, and a quantitative survey instrument (modified SEBEST) to assess PSTs perceptions of teaching diverse learners. Results suggest that using FSLEs as an integral component of teacher preparation can be a powerful facilitator of learning for all involved, increasing excitement for learning, confidence in using culturally relevant activities and valuable experience in working with family members, particularly Hispanics. In addition, using culturally relevant science activities deepened content knowledge and gave PSTs the opportunity to use culturally responsive activities with Hispanic students and their families, increasing feelings of self‐efficacy in science teaching with diverse learners.  相似文献

A new method of analyzing mathematics attitudes through symbolic drawings, situated within the field of Jungian‐oriented analytical psychology, was applied to 52 preservice elementary teachers before and after a mathematics methods course. In this triangulation mixed methods design study, pretest images related to past mathematics experiences drawn by prospective teachers were 63.2% negative in tone, and listed associated emotions were 60.4% negative; on the posttest these changed significantly to 72.1% positive images, with 70.5% positive associated emotions. The qualitative analysis of images and preservice teacher interpretations of them indicate that mathematics anxiety decreased and motivation changed from extrinsic to intrinsic as a result of the course. Pretest images and interpretations focused primarily on grades, unhappiness, time and pressure, struggle, and lack of success. Posttest images and interpretations revealed (a) greater understanding of mathematical concepts through use of concrete materials; (b) greater engagement in mathematics through interesting activities and discourse with peers; and (c) a sense of accomplishment from teaching practicum lessons. Because the drawing exercise helped students connect with their previously unconscious images of mathematics, thereby helping to shift the mathematics anxiety complex toward a more positive affective state, it is recommended that these activities be part of mathematics methods courses.  相似文献

This study investigated the mathematics beliefs and content knowledge of 103 elementary pre‐service teachers in a developmental teacher preparation program that included a two course mathematics methods sequence. Pre‐service teachers' pedagogical beliefs became more cognitively‐oriented during the teacher preparation program with these changes occurring during the two methods courses. Pedagogical beliefs remained stable during student teaching. The pre‐service teachers also significantly increased their personal efficacy for teaching mathematics throughout the program with these shifts occurring across both methods courses and into student teaching. Pedagogical beliefs and teaching efficacy beliefs were not related at the beginning of the program, but, in general, were positively related throughout the program. In addition, the pre‐service teachers' pedagogical beliefs were positively related to their specialized content knowledge for teaching mathematics at the end of the program.  相似文献

This mixed-methods study describes classroom characteristics and student outcomes from university mathematics courses that are based in mathematics departments, targeted to future pre-tertiary teachers, and taught with inquiry-based learning (IBL) approaches. The study focused on three two-term sequences taught at two research universities, separately targeting elementary and secondary pre-service teachers. Classroom observation established that the courses were taught with student-centred methods that were comparable to those used in IBL courses for students in mathematics-intensive fields at the same institutions. To measure pre-service teachers' gains in mathematical knowledge for teaching, we administered the Learning Mathematics for Teaching (LMT) instrument developed by Hill, Ball and Schilling for in-service teacher professional development. Results from the LMT show that pre-service teachers made significant score gains from beginning to end of their course, while data from interviews and from surveys of learning gains show that pre-service teachers viewed their gains as relevant to their future teaching work. Measured changes on pre-/post-surveys of attitudes and beliefs were generally supportive of learning mathematics but modest in magnitude. The study is distinctive in applying the LMT to document pre-service teachers' growth in mathematical knowledge for teaching. The study also suggests IBL is an approach well suited to mathematics departments seeking to strengthen their pre-service teacher preparation offerings in ways consistent with research-based recommendations.  相似文献

Teaching mathematics in university levels is one of the most important fields of research in the area of mathematics education. Nevertheless, there is little information about teaching knowledge of mathematics university teachers. Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) provides a suitable framework to study knowledge of teachers. The purpose of this paper is to make explicit the perception of mathematics university teachers about PCK. For this purpose, a phenomenological study was done. Data resources included semi-structured interviews with 10 mathematics university teachers who were in different places of the mathematics university teaching experience spectrum. Data analysis indicated a model consisting of four cognitive themes which are mathematics syntactic knowledge, knowledge about mathematics curriculum planning, knowledge about students' mathematics learning and knowledge about creating an influential mathematics teaching–learning environment. Besides, it was found out that three contextual themes influenced on PCK for teaching mathematics in university levels which were the nature of mathematics subjects, university teachers' features and terms of learning environment.  相似文献

The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the impact of co‐taught integrated STEM methods instruction on preservice elementary teachers’ self‐efficacy for teaching science and mathematics within an integrated STEM framework. Two instructional methods courses (Elementary Mathematics Methods and Elementary Science Methods) were redesigned to include STEM integration components, including STEM model lessons co‐taught by a mathematics and science educator, as well as a special education colleague. Quantitative data were gathered at three time points in the semester (beginning, middle, and end) from 55 preservice teachers examining teacher self‐efficacy for integrated STEM teaching. Qualitative data were gathered from a purposeful sample of seven preservice teachers to further understand preservice teachers’ perceptions on delivering integrated STEM instruction in an elementary setting. Quantitative results showed a significant increase in teacher self‐efficacy across all three time points. Item‐level analysis revealed that self‐efficacy for tasks involving engineering and assessment (both formative and summative) were low across time points, while self‐efficacy for tasks involving technology and flexibility were consistently high. Qualitative results revealed that the preservice teachers did not feel adequately prepared by university‐level science and mathematics courses, in terms of content knowledge and integration of science and mathematics for elementary students.  相似文献

Proof and reasoning are central to learning mathematics with understanding. Yet proof is seen as challenging to teach and to learn. In a capstone course for preservice teachers, we developed instructional modules that guided prospective secondary mathematics teachers (PSTs) through a cycle of learning about the logical aspects of proof, then planning and implementing lessons in secondary classrooms that integrate these aspects with traditional mathematics curriculum in the United States. In this paper we highlight our framework on mathematical knowledge for teaching proof and focus on some of the logical aspects of proof that are seen as particularly challenging (four proof themes). We analyze 60 lesson plans, video recordings of a subset of 13 enacted lessons, and the PSTs’ self- reported data to shed light on how the PSTs planned and enacted lessons that integrate these proof themes. The results provide insights into successes and challenges the PSTs encountered in this process and illustrate potential pathways for preparing PSTs to enact reasoning and proof in secondary classrooms. We also highlight the design principles for supporting the development of PSTs’ mathematical knowledge for teaching proof.  相似文献
