A new shimmy model

Shimmy is a phenomenon of intense angular self-excited vibrations of the wheels of a carriage. Such self-excited vibrations present a serious threat to traffic safety, which accounts for the great interest of researchers in this phenomenon. The problem is of highest importance for the front wheels of aircraft. Usually, the deformation of pneumatic tires is considered to be the main factor responsible for shimmy. Without challenging this thesis, we nevertheless note that this is not the only factor. The shimmy phenomenon can be observed in everyday life in the case of various carriages that often have nothing to do with pneumatics if the wheels are rigid. Below we will show that the theory of polycomponent dry friction fully explains the shimmy phenomenon for absolutely rigid wheels and, hence, is at least one of the factors responsible for shimmy in the general case. The reason why researchers have not taken dry friction into account when explaining shimmy is that the theory of this kind of friction has not been well developed; at the same time one has failed to explain shimmy in the framework of other existing theories.     

Another design for sundials

Based on Kepler's laws we calculate the position of the sun as a function of the date, the local time, the latitude and longitude and use the resulting formula to construct a portable sundial which works without being adjusted to the cardinal directions (i.e. there is no need for an additional compass).     

Another space-filling trefoil knot

This note describes a toroidal polyhedron which is homotopic to a trefoil knot and admits an isohedral tiling of 3-space with many symmetries.

A new model for Boolean algebra

This new model for set theory is a graph. It is similar in many ways to a Venn diagram or Karnaugh map, but it does not pose as a rival, merely as an alternative model which may be useful in some contexts. Defined with reference to the duality of lines and points, the graph is a fitting framework in which to display the rich duality of Boolean algebra.

In the first four sections the graph is developed as a natural embodiment of Boolean theory and it is hoped that it will be seen, not as a more computational device but as helpful for demonstrating Boolean theory. The second half of the article is devoted to practical applications. The graph can be applied (and has been applied in school teaching) extensively in set theory, in logic, in probability, in genetics and in switching circuits, but space does not allow the elaboration of all these in detail. So this article concentrates mainly on one of these applications, switching circuits. The graph is used to simplify and minimize logic circuits with techniques different from Karnaugh's and in some instances more comprehensive.     

A new model for record values

A new mathematical model of record values, named confirmed records, is constructed. It is based on the notion of kth record values, which, in turn, is a generalization of ordinary mathematical records and extremal order statistics. Confirmed records are considered for arbitrary k = 1, 2, ... under the assumption that the original random variables X ₁, X ₂, ... are independent and have the same continuous distribution function. For new record values, two representations are obtained in the most important special cases where the original variables have the exponential and the uniform distribution. For uniform and exponential confirmed records, means and variances are found.     

A new multifractal network traffic model

In this paper, a new multifractal traffic model to capture the multifractal nature of modern Internet traffic was developed. Employing the algorithm of network traffic analysis (binomial inverse cascade process) to analyze the multifractal feature of traffic data and adopting the algorithm of network traffic synthesis (binomial cascade process) to model the network traffic, this approach gave an easy and efficient way to infer the model parameters from the measured traffic traces. Moreover, the traffic was simulated and analyzed using obtained parameters. It was found that the simulated traffic data were in a close fit to the real trace statistics. The analysis results showed that this model could capture the real network traffic very well.     

Another potential shortcoming of AHP

In the last twenty years many features of Saaty’s Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) have been criticised, especially the additive hierarchical composition of conventional AHP, which leads to the possibility of occurrence of the Rank Reversal phenomenon (adding an irrelevant alternative may cause a reversal in the ranking at the top). In this paper we show another feature of AHP which may be, and in many application contexts will inneed be, an even stronger shortcoming of the method. It consists in the fact that the addition of indifferent criteria (for which all alternatives perform equally) causes a significant alteration of the aggregated priorities of alternatives, with important consequences. In hierarchies with four or more levels, rank reversal may happen. Since in almost all applications of AHP the set of criteria is not fixed ex-ante but is variable and is constructed in accordance with reasons of relevance and simplicity, almost all applications of AHP are potentially flawed.     

Another way to say caloric

This paper offers characterizations of subsolutions of the heat equation (the subcaloric functions) and the infinity heat equation (the infinity-subcaloric functions) by means of comparison properties with explicit families of solutions of the corresponding equations. The primary ingredients of functions in these families are translates of solutions which depend radially on the space variables. Results of independent interest include the presentation and study of the class of infinity-caloric functions employed in the characterization.
