The predictive qualities of a recently developed algebraic intermittency model for laminar-to-turbulent transition are analysed for the flow through a linear cascade of low-pressure turbine blades with an endwall. Both steady RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes) and time-accurate RANS (URANS) simulations are performed. The results are compared with reference LES (Large Eddy Simulation) by Cui et al. (2017, Numerical investigation of secondary flows in a high-lift low pressure turbine, Int. J. of Heat and Fluid Flow, vol. 63) and results by the local correlation-based intermittency transport model (LCTM) by Menter et al. (2015, A one-equation local correlation-based transition model. Flow Turbul. Combust., vol. 95) for laminar and turbulent endwall boundary layers at the cascade entrance. Good agreement is obtained with the reference LES and with results by the LCTM for the evolution through the cascade of the mass-averaged total pressure loss coefficient and for profiles of pitchwise-averaged total pressure loss coefficient at the cascade exit.  相似文献

Three turbulent intermittency methods, namely the , TERA (turbulent energy recognition algorithm), and M-TERA (modified turbulent energy recognition algorithm) methods, for identifying the intermittent flow characteristics associated with boundary layer transition from laminar to turbulent were considered and compared. The data used were obtained from hot-wire measurements in transitional boundary layer flows on a concave surface with a 2-m radius of curvature and on a flat plate. Comparisons show that the and TERA methods are more sensitive to the choice of threshold constants than the M-TERA method. In terms of the intermittency distribution across the boundary layer, the values obtained by the and TERA methods are unrealistically high in the near-wall region, while those obtained by the M-TERA method are more realistic. In the outer boundary layer region and outside the boundary layer, the and M-TERA methods give reasonable intermittency values, whereas the TERA method produces unrealistically high values in the region outside the boundary layer. In addition, the M-TERA method provides a sharper definition of theend of transition.  相似文献

The finite element method is employed to investigate time-dependent liquid metal flows with free convection, free surfaces and Marangoni effects. The liquid circulates in a two-dimensional shallow trough with differentially heated vertical walls. The spatial formulation incorporates mixed Lagrangian approximations to the velocity, pressure, temperature and free surface position. The time integration is performed with the backward Euler and trapezoid rule methods with step size control. The Galerkin method is used to reduce the problem to a set of non-linear equations which are solved with the Newton–Raphson method. Calculations are performed for conditions relevant to the electron beam vaporization of refractory metals. The Prandtl number is 0·015 and Grashof number are in the transition range between laminar and turbulent flow. The results reveal the effects of flow intensity, surface tension gradients, mesh refinement and time integration strategy.  相似文献

Transitional jet diffusion flames provide the link between dynamics of laminar and turbulent flames. In this study, instabilities and their interaction with the flow structure are explored in a transitional jet diffusion flame, with focus on isolating buoyancy effects. Experiments are conducted in hydrogen flames with fuel jet Reynolds number of up to 2,200 and average jet velocity of up to 54 m/s. Since the fuel jet is laminar at the injector exit, the transition from laminar to turbulent flame occurs by the hydrodynamic instabilities in the shear layer of fuel jet. The instabilities and the flow structures are visualized and quantified by the rainbow schlieren deflectometry technique coupled with a high-speed imaging system. The schlieren images acquired at 2,000 frames per second allowed exposure time of 23 μs with spatial resolution of 0.4 mm. Results identify a hitherto unknown secondary instability in the flame surface, provide explanation for the observed intermittency in the breakpoint length, show coherent vortical structures downstream of the flame breakpoint, and illustrate gradual breakdown of coherent structures into small-scale random structures in the far field turbulent region.  相似文献

A relatively simple, yet efficient and accurate finite difference method is developed for the solution of the unsteady boundary layer equations for both laminar and turbulent flows. The numerical procedure is subjected to rigorous validation tests in the laminar case, comparing its predictions with exact analytical solutions, asymptotic solutions, and/or experimental results. Calculations of periodic laminar boundary layers are performed from low to very high oscillation frequencies, for small and large amplitudes, for zero as well as adverse time-mean pressure gradients, and even in the presence of significant flow reversal. The numerical method is then applied to predict a relatively simple experimental periodic turbulent boundary layer, using two well-known quasi-steady closure models. The predictions are shown to be in good agreement with the measurements, thereby demonstrating the suitability of the present numerical scheme for handling periodic turbulent boundary layers. The method is thus a useful tool for the further development of turbulence models for more complex unsteady flows.  相似文献

In this study we propose a laminar–turbulent transition model, which considers the effects of the various instability modes that exist in turbomachinery flows. This model is based on a Kωγ three-equation eddy-viscosity concept with K representing the fluctuating kinetic energy, ω the specific dissipation rate and γ the intermittency factor. As usual, the local mechanics by which the freestream disturbances penetrate into the laminar boundary layer, namely convection and viscous diffusion, are described by the transport equations. However, as a novel feature, the non-local effects due to pressure diffusion are additionally represented by an elliptic formulation. Such an approach allows the present model to respond accurately to freestream turbulence intensity properly and to predict both long and short bubble lengths well. The success in its application to a 3-D cascade indicates that the mixed-mode transition scenario indeed benefits from such a modular prediction approach, which embodies current conceptual understanding of the transition process.  相似文献

A thermodynamic model of turbulent motions in a granular material   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
This paper is devoted to a thermodynamic theory of granular materials subjected to slow frictional as well as rapid flows with strong collisional interactions. The microstructure of the material is taken into account by considering the solid volume fraction as a basic field. This variable is of a kinematic nature and enters the formulation via the balance law of the configurational momentum, including corresponding contributions to the energy balance, as originally proposed by Goodman and Cowin [1], but modified here. Complemented by constitutive equations, the emerging field equations are postulated to be adequate for motions, be they laminar or turbulent, if the resolved length scales are sufficiently small. On large length scales the sub-grid motion may be interpreted as fluctuations, which manifest themselves in correspondingly filtered equations as correlation products, like in the turbulence theory. We apply an ergodic (Reynolds) filter to these equations and thus deduce averaged equations for the mean motions. The averaged equations comprise balances of mass, linear and configurational momenta, energy, and turbulent kinetic energy as well as turbulent configurational kinetic energy. They are complemented by balance laws for two internal fields, the dissipation rates of the turbulent kinetic energy and of the turbulent configurational kinetic energy. We formulate closure relations for the averages of the laminar constitutive quantities and for the correlation terms by using the rules of material and turbulent objectivity, including equipresence. Many versions of the second law of thermodynamics are known in the literature. We follow the Müller-Liu theory and extend Müllers entropy principle to allow the satisfaction of the second law of thermodynamics for both laminar and turbulent motions. Its exploitation, performed in the spirit of the Müller-Liu theory, delivers restrictions on the dependent constitutive quantities (through the Liu equations) and a residual inequality, from which thermodynamic equilibrium properties are deduced. Finally, linear relationships are proposed for the nonequilibrium closure relations.Received: 21 March 2003, Accepted: 1 September 2003, Published online: 11 February 2004PACS: 05.70.Ln, 61.25.Hq, 61.30.-vCorrespondence to: I. A numerical study of the onset of longitudinal transition between turbulent and laminar regimes during the evaporation of a water film is presented. These water film streams along a horizontal elliptical tube under the simultaneous effects of gravity, pressure gradients, caused by the vapor flow and curvature, and viscous forces. At the interface of water vapor, the shear stress is supposed to be negligible. Outside the boundary layer, the vapor phase velocity is obtained from potential flow. In the analysis Von Karmans turbulence model is used and the inertia and convection terms are retained. Transfers equations are discretised by using the implicit Keller method. The effects of an initial liquid flow rate per unit of length, Froude number, temperature difference between the wall and the liquid–vapor interface and ellipticity on the transition position have been evaluated. The transition criterion has been given in term of the critical film Reynolds number (Re)C.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulation (LES) results for laminar-to-turbulent transition in a spatially developing boundary layer are presented. The disturbances are ingested into a laminar flow through an unsteady suction-and-blowing strip. The filtered, three-dimensional time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations are integrated numerically using spectral, high-order finite-differences, and a three-stage low-storage Runge–Kutta/Crank–Nicolson time-advancement method. The buffer-domain technique is used for the outflow boundary condition. The localized dynamic model used to parametrize the subgrid-scale (SGS) stresses begins to have a significant impact at the beginning of the nonlinear transition (or intermittency) region. The flow structures commonly found in experiments are also observed in the present simulation; the computed linear instability modes and secondary instability $\Lambda$-vortex structures are in agreement with the experiments, and the streak-like structures and turbulent statistics compare with both the experiments and the theory. The physics captured in the present LES are consistent with the experiments and the full Navier–Stokes simulation (DNS), at a significant fraction of the DNS cost. A comparison of the results obtained with several SGS models shows that the localized model gives accurate results both in a statistical sense and in terms of predicting the dynamics of the energy-carrying eddies, while requiring fewer ad hoc adjustments than the other models. The time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations are numerically integrated for two-dimensional incompressible viscous flow in a shear-driven square cavity. Using a time-splitting method and finite differences on a staggered mesh, the momentum and pressure equations are directly solved by a tensor product method where one finite difference direction is diagonalized by eigenvalue decomposition. The effects of increasing Reynolds number are studied and the developing boundary layer is captured by using a finely clustered mesh. At Re = 30000 the flow is in a continuously developing unsteady regime. Power spectrum plots indicate that the unsteady flow oscillates with one fundamental frequency and exhibits some characteristics of transition between laminar and turbulent states.  相似文献

Results of a parametric study of unsteady laminar flows are analyzed. Three-dimensional unsteady equations of hydromechanics for a compressible medium are solved. The range of the characteristic Reynolds number Re = 400–900 is considered. It is demonstrated that the laminar flow in a plane channel ceases to be steady at Re = 415. As the Reynolds number increases, the unsteady processes become more intense, disturbances penetrate inward the channel, and separation zones lose their stability. In the vicinity of the channel exit, however, the flow tends to stabilize, though it remains unsteady. No transition to a turbulent flow occurs in the examined range of Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

This work aims to model buoyant, laminar or turbulent flows, using a two‐dimensional incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics model with accurate wall boundary conditions. The buoyancy effects are modelled through the Boussinesq approximation coupled to a heat equation, which makes it possible to apply an incompressible algorithm to compute the pressure field from a Poisson equation. Based on our previous work [1], we extend the unified semi‐analytical wall boundary conditions to the present model. The latter is also combined to a Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes approach to treat turbulent flows. The k ? ? turbulence model is used, where buoyancy is modelled through an additional term in the k ? ? equations like in mesh‐based methods. We propose a unified framework to prescribe isothermal (Dirichlet) or to impose heat flux (Neumann) wall boundary conditions in incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics. To illustrate this, a theoretical case is presented (laminar heated Poiseuille flow), where excellent agreement with the theoretical solution is obtained. Several benchmark cases are then proposed: a lock‐exchange flow, two laminar and one turbulent flow in differentially heated cavities, and finally a turbulent heated Poiseuille flow. Comparisons are provided with a finite volume approach using an open‐source industrial code.

A differential equation of the kinetic-energy balance of turbulence is used in a number of papers to close the equations describing average motion in turbulent flows. On the basis of this relation, a differential equation for turbulent viscosity is obtained herein. Numerical computations are carried out for incompressible non-self-similar turbulent and transition flows in awake, a jet, and a boundary layer; universal constants in the equation for the viscosity are refined. The flow in a wake and boundary layer with high longitudinal pressure gradients is investigated by analytical and numerical methods. Dimensionless criteria determining the nature of the effect of the pressure gradient on the average flow and turbulent viscosity are obtained.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 114–127, September–October, 1971.The author is greateful to I. Tube inserts are used as heat transfer enhancement tool for both retrofit and new design of shell and tube heat exchangers. This paper discusses and reviews the characteristics and performance of twisted tapes. The theory and application are also addressed. Industrial case study was selected to illustrate the behaviour effect that the twisted tapes impose at various laminar, transition and turbulent flow regions. This effect was demonstrated by changing the inside tube diameter and twist ratio through evaluating selected exchanger design parameters such as: local heat transfer coefficient, friction factor and pressure drop. Testing the exponent powers for Re and Pr at both laminar and turbulent regions were carried out. General design considerations are outlined for the use of twisted tapes in shell and tube heat exchangers.  相似文献

Predictions for two-dimensional, steady, incompressible flows under both laminar and turbulent conditions are presented. The standard k-? turbulence model is used for the turbulent flows. The computational method is based on the approximate factorization technique. The coupled approach is used to link the equations of motion and the turbulence model equations. Mass conservation is enforced by either the pseudocompressibility method or the pressure correction method. Comparison of the two methods shows a superiority of the pressure correction method. Second- and fourth-order artifical dissipation terms are used in order to achieve good convergence and to handle the turbulence model equations efficiently. Several internal and external test cases are investigated, including attached and separated flows.  相似文献

A transition model for describing wake-induced transition is presented based on the SST turbulence model by Menter and two dynamic equations for intermittency: one for near-wall intermittency and one for free-stream intermittency. In the Navier-Stokes equations, the total intermittency factor, which is the sum of the two, multiplies the turbulent viscosity computed by the turbulence model. The quality of the transition model is illustrated on the T106A test cascade for two Reynolds numbers, using experimental results by Stieger and Hodson for transition mainly due to kinematic wake impact on a separation bubble. The quality of the model is also revealed on the T106D test cascade using experimental results from Hilgenfeld, Stadtmuller and Fottner for wake turbulence induced transition. The test cases differ in pitch to chord ratio, Reynolds number and inlet free-stream turbulence intensity, causing different transition mechanisms. The unsteady results are presented in space-time diagrams of shape factor and wall shear stress on the suction side. The results show the capability of the model to capture the physics of unsteady transition in separated state. Inevitable shortcomings are revealed as well.  相似文献

The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to analyse a mixture of wave and diffusive behaviours governing flow in a saturated porous medium inside an elastic pipe that is suddenly subjected to a large hydraulic gradient at its entrance. At early times and near the entrance, the head is a diffusing wave that can be reduced to the linear and non-linear telegrapher equations for the laminar and partially developed turbulent flows, respectively. At later times, laminar flows are diffusive and partially developed turbulent flows follow a ‘fast diffusion’ behaviour. In the case of fully developed turbulence, flows at later times follow a fast diffusion form which is complicated by advection at extremely high gradients. A matched asymptotic expansion approach is used to match flows at early times and near the entrance, with complementary forms that are away from the entrance and which occur at later times.  相似文献
