The effect of a vertical adiabatic wall on the natural convection heat transfer from vertical array of attached cylinders, which can be considered as wavy surface, was investigated experimentally and numerically. The experiments were carried out using Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the commercial FLUENT code was used for numerical study. This paper focuses on the effect of wall-wavy surface spacing and Rayleigh number variation on the local and average free convection heat transfer coefficients from the each cylinder and the wavy surface. Rayleigh number ranges from 2400 to 10,000 and from 300,000 to 1,250,000 based on cylinder diameter and wavy surface height respectively. The local and average Nusselt numbers were determined for the different Rayleigh numbers, and the ratio of wall- wavy surface spacing to cylinder diameter 0.75, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, and ∞. Results are indicated with a single correlation which gives the average Nusselt number as a function of the ratio of the wall-wavy surface spacing to cylinder diameter and the Rayleigh numbers. There is an optimum distance between the wall and wavy surface in which the Nusselt number attain its maximum value. This optimum distance depends on the Rayleigh number.  相似文献

Forced convection heat transfer from an unconfined circular cylinder in the steady cross-flow regime has been studied using a finite volume method (FVM) implemented on a Cartesian grid system in the range as 10 ≤ Re ≤ 45 and 0.7 ≤ Pr ≤ 400. The numerical results are used to develop simple correlations for Nusselt number as a function of the pertinent dimensionless variables. In addition to average Nusselt number, the effects of Re, Pr and thermal boundary conditions on the temperature field near the cylinder and on the local Nusselt number distributions have also been presented to provide further physical insights into the nature of the flow. The rate of heat transfer increases with an increase in the Reynolds and/or Prandtl numbers. The uniform heat flux condition always shows higher value of heat transfer coefficient than the constant wall temperature at the surface of the cylinder for the same Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The maximum difference between the two values is around 15–20%.  相似文献

The non-Newtonian effect in the boundary layer flow over a horizontal elliptical cylinder is investigated numerically. A modified power-law viscosity model is used to correlate the non-Newtonian characteristics of the fluid flow. For natural convectionflows, the surface of the cylinder is maintained by the uniform surface temperature(UST)or the uniform heat flux(UHF) condition. The governing equations corresponding to theflow are first transformed into a dimensionless non-similar form using suitable transformations. The resulting equations are solved numerically by an efficient finite difference scheme. The numerical results are presented for the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number with the eccentric angle for different values of the power-law index n. The local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are found to be higher and lower, respectively, for the shear thickening fluids(n > 1) than the other fluids(n≤1).The effects of different elliptical configurations on the average Nusselt number are also presented and discussed for both conditions of the surface temperature.  相似文献

Mini-channel heat sinks have relatively low Nusselt number due to small Reynolds number. For heat transfer enhancement purpose, a mini-channel radiator with cylinder disturbed flow was proposed. The disturbed flow was created by a circular cylinder placed horizontally in front of channels entrance. The performance of heat transfer and pressure drop with/without disturbed flow was studied experimentally. It was found that the friction factor of mini-channel flow was larger than that of the macro-channel flow due to larger surface roughness, and the pressure drop caused by cylinder disturbed flow was less than 5%. It also concluded that the average Nusselt number increases with augment of Reynolds and Prandtl number. The Nusselt number correlations as the function of the Reynolds and Prandtl number were given for evaluation the heat removal performance of similar heat radiators. There is an inflexion point in the empirical formulas when the channel length equals to the thermal entrance length. For the mini-channels heat radiators with disturbed flow, the inflexion Reynolds number is larger than that of without disturbed flow. Due to the flow pulsing caused by circular cylinder placed in front of channels entrance, the thermal entrance length increases. On the other hand, for both mini-channels with or without disturbed flow, the thermal resistance increases with the decrease of pressure drop.  相似文献

Theoretical studies have been carried out for a comparative assessment of hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness, displacement thickness and shear stress at the wall for laminar flow around a circular cylinder and a sphere with the help of the approximate method due to Karman and Pohlhausen for two dimensional flow and the method as applied to bodies of revolution based on the work of F. W. Scholkemeier, respectively. Thermal boundary layer thickness and Nusselt number have been evaluated around the surface of the solids. Comparison is made with available solutions. The graphical presentation of the results depicts a concise and relative assessment of fluid flow and heat-transfer parameters for flow around cylinder and sphere.  相似文献

A finite element method is used to solve the full Navier-Stokes and energy equations for the problems of laminar flow and heat transfer characteristics of air around three isothermal heated horizontal cylinders in a staggered tube bank and around four isothermal heated horizontal cylinders in an in line tube bank. The variations of surface shear stress, pressure and Nusselt number are obtained over the entire cylinder surface, including the zone beyond the separation point. The predicted values of total drag, pressure drag and friction drag coefficients, average Nusselt number, and the plots of velocity flow fields and isotherms are also presented.  相似文献

Experiments are carried out to study flow and heat transfer characteristics over NACA0018 aerofoil when the body approaches the wall of a wind tunnel. Investigations have been done to study the effect of wall proximity due to flow separation around the body at Reynolds number 2.5 × 105, different height ratios and various angles of attack. The static pressure distribution has been measured on upper and lower surfaces of the aerofoil. The results have been presented in the form of pressure coefficient, drag coefficient for different height ratios. Pressure coefficient values are decreased and then increased on the lower surface of the aerofoil and decreased on the upper surface of the aerofoil at all angles of attack. The negative pressure coefficient and drag coefficient decreases as the body approaches the upper wall of wind tunnel. The maximum value of drag coefficient has been observed at an angle of attack 30° for the aerofoil at all height ratios. The Heat transfer experiments have been carried out under constant heat flux condition. Heat transfer coefficients are determined from the measured wall temperature and ambient temperature and presented in the form of Nusselt number. The variation of local as well as average Nusselt number has been shown with non dimensional distance for different angles of attack and for various height ratios. The local as well as average Nusselt number decreases as the height ratio decreases for all non-dimensional distance and angles of attack respectively. Maximum value of average Nusselt number has been observed at an angle of attack 40°.  相似文献

The unsteady natural convective couple stress fluid flow over a semi-infinite vertical cylinder is analyzed for the homogeneous first-order chemical reaction effect. The couple stress fluid flow model introduces the length dependent effect based on the material constant and dynamic viscosity. Also, it introduces the biharmonic operator in the Navier-Stokes equations, which is absent in the case of Newtonian fluids. The solution to the time-dependent non-linear and coupled governing equations is carried out with an unconditionally stable Crank-Nicolson type of numerical schemes. Numerical results for the transient flow variables, the average wall shear stress, the Nusselt number, and the Sherwood number are shown graphically for both generative and destructive reactions. The time to reach the temporal maximum increases as the reaction constant K increases. The average values of the wall shear stress and the heat transfer rate decrease as K increases, while increase with the increase in the Sherwood number.  相似文献

Experimental investigations in fluid flow and heat transfer have been carried out to study the effect of wall proximity due to flow separation around a square prism at Reynolds number 2.6 × 104, blockage ratio 0.1, different height-ratios and various angles of attack. The static pressure distribution has been measured on all faces of the square prism. The results have been presented in the form of pressure coefficient, drag coefficient for various height-ratios. The pressure distribution shows positive values on the front face whereas on the rear face negative values of the pressure coefficient have been observed. The positive pressure coefficient for different height-ratios does not vary too much but the negative values of pressure coefficient are higher for all points on the surface as the bluff body approaches towards the upper wall of the wind tunnel. The drag coefficient decreases with the increase in angle of attack as the height-ratio decreases. The maximum value of drag coefficient has been observed at an angle of attack nearly 50° for the square prism at all height-ratios. The heat transfer experiments have been carried out under constant heat flux condition. Heat transfer coefficient are determined from the measured wall temperature and ambient temperature and presented in the form of Nusselt number. Both local and average Nusselt numbers have been presented for various height-ratios. The variation of local Nusselt number has been shown with non-dimensional distance for different angles of attack. The variation of average Nusselt number has also been shown with different angles of attack. The local as well as average Nusselt number decreases as the height-ratio decreases for all non-dimensional distance and angle of attack, respectively, for the square prism. The average Nusselt number for the square prism varies with the angle of attack. But there is no definite angle of attack at which the value of average Nusselt number is either maximum or minimum.  相似文献

Experimental and numerical studies were carried out to investigate forced convection heat transfer and flow features around the downstream elliptic cylinder in four staggered cylinders in cross flow. The elliptic cylinders examined had an axis ratio (b/c) of 1:2, and they were arranged with zero angle of attack to the upstream flow. The present heat transfer measurements were obtained by heating only the downstream elliptic cylinder (test cylinder) under the condition of constant heat flux. The testing fluid was air and the Reynolds number based on the major axis length (c) was ranged from 4,000 to 45,570. The tested longitudinal spacing ratio (Sx/c) and the transversal spacing ratio (Sy/b) were in the ranges of 1.5 ≤ Sx/c ≤ 4.0 and 1.5 ≤ Sy/b ≤ 4.0, respectively. The air flow pattern and temperature fields around the four staggered elliptic cylinders were predicted by using CFD software package. Also, a flow visualization study was made to show the flow features around the elliptic cylinders. It was observed that Num of the downstream elliptic cylinder in four staggered cylinders was higher than that of three in-line cylinders for all tested spacing ratios and Reynolds numbers except for Re = 4,000. It was clear that, at lower Reynolds number values (Re < 14,100), the average Nusselt number of the downstream elliptic cylinder in three staggered arrangement was higher than that of the downstream cylinder in four staggered arrangement for all tested spacing ratios. On the other hand, at Re > 14,100, the tested elliptic cylinder in four staggered arrangement had the higher values of the average Nusselt number. Moreover, in four staggered arrangement, the maximum average Nusselt number enhancement ratio (average Nusselt number of the tested downstream cylinder/average Nusselt number of a single elliptic cylinder) was found to be about 2.0, and was obtained for spacing ratios of Sx/c = 2.5, Sy/b = 2.5 and at Re = 32,000. Finally, the average Nusselt number of the tested cylinder in four staggered arrangement was correlated in terms of Reynolds number and cylinder spacing ratios.  相似文献

Steady, laminar, mixed convection in the fully developed region of horizontal concentric annuli has been investigated numerically for the case of non-uniform circumferential heating. Two heating conditions were studied, one in which a 180 arc encompassing the top half of inner surface of the inner cylinder is uniformly heated while the bottom half is kept insulated, and the other in which the heated and the insulated surfaces were reversed. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics were found to be affected by the heating conditions. For the investigated range of the governing buoyancy parameter, the modified Grashof number (Gr*), it was found that bottom heating arrangement gives rise to a vigorous secondary flow, with the result that the average Nusselt numbers are much higher than those for pure forced convection. On the other hand, the local Nusselt numbers are nearly circumferentially uniform. In the case of top heating arrangement, a less vigorous secondary flow is induced because of temperature stratification, with average Nusselt numbers that are substantially lower than those for bottom heating and with large circumferential variation of the local Nusselt number. A large eddy simulation is used to simulate flow and heat transfer in a turbulent plane jet with two distances from the jet-exit to impingement corresponding to twice and ten times the slot nozzle width. The resolved different unsteady vortex motions of the jet shear layers are studied and shown to have an important influence on heat transfer at the wall. They are used to explain existence of the second peak in Nusselt number for the case corresponding to twice the slot nozzle width. The predicted average surface Nusselt number profiles exhibit good agreement with experiments.  相似文献

A collocated, non-orthogonal grid based finite volume technique has been applied for investigating the two dimensional natural convective flow and heat transfer around a heated cylinder kept in a square enclosure. The effects of different enclosure wall thermal boundary conditions, fluid Prandtl number and the ratio between enclosure and cylinder dimensions (aspect ratio) upon the flow and thermal features, have been systematically studied. It is observed that the patterns of recirculatory flow and thermal stratification in the fluid are significantly modified, if any of these parameters is varied. The overall heat transfer rates are also affected due to the changes in the flow and temperature patterns. The study presents useful observations regarding the variation of local Nusselt number along each wall, for the different cases considered. In spiral vortex flow, between concentric cylinders with the inner cylinder rotating and the outer stationary, the addition of a thermal gradient across the gap is a known complicating factor. The present diabatic study for narrow and wide gaps (radius ratios N=0.955 and N=0.8), with a heated outer and adiabatic inner cylinder, was undertaken to investigate this problem. The heat transfer characteristics and the modes of transition have been investigated together with the relationship between them. Using standard on-line digital computer techniques, the onset of vortex flow and its higher transitions have been shown to cause a sharp increase in Nusselt number. At higher Taylor numbers, of the order of 106, a marked change in the Nusselt number occurs with the onset of the transition to periodic turbulent vortex flow. Outer wall heating is seen to affect the modes of transition. Diabatic critical Taylor numbers are much higher than those for adiabatic conditions and are found to depend on the close approach of the vortices to the outer wall  相似文献

This paper extends the existing studies of heat convection by an external flow impinging upon a flat porous insert to that on a circular cylinder inside a porous medium. The surface of the cylinder is subject to constant temperature and can include uniform or non-uniform transpiration. These cylindrical configurations are introduced in the analyses of stagnation-point flows in porous media for the first time. The equations governing steady transport of momentum and thermal energy in porous media are reduced to simpler nonlinear differential equations and subsequently solved numerically. This reveals the dimensionless velocity and temperature fields of the stagnation-point flow, as well as the Nusselt number and shear stress on the surface of the cylinder. The results show that transpiration on the surface of the cylinder and Reynolds number of the external flow dominate the fluid dynamics and heat transfer problems. In particular, non-uniform transpiration is shown to significantly affect the thermal and hydrodynamic responses of the system in the circumferential direction. However, the permeability and porosity of the porous medium are found to have relatively smaller influences.  相似文献

An experimental and numerical study has been carried out to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a horizontal circular cylinder exposed to a slot jet impingement of air. A square-edged nozzle is mounted parallel with the cylinder axis and jet flow impinges on the bottom of the cylinder. The study is focused on low Reynolds numbers ranging from 120 to 1,210, Grashof numbers up to Gr = 10Re 2 and slot-to-cylinder spacing from 2 to 8 of the slot width. The flow field is greatly influenced by the slot exit velocity and the buoyancy force due to density change. A Mach–Zehnder Interferometer is used for measurement of local Nusselt number around the cylinder at 10° interval. It is observed that the average Nusselt number decreases with increasing the jet spacing and increases with rising the Reynolds number. A finite volume method utilizing a curvilinear coordinate transformation is used for numerical modeling. The numerical results show good agreement with the experimental results. The flow and thermal field are seen to be stable and symmetric around the cylinder over the range of parameters studied.  相似文献

A two-dimensional numerical study is carried out to understand the influence of cross buoyancy on the vortex shedding processes behind two equal isothermal square cylinders placed in a tandem arrangement at low Reynolds numbers. The spacing between the cylinders is fixed with five widths of the cylinder dimension. The flow is considered in an unbounded medium, however, fictitious confining boundaries are chosen to make the problem computationally feasible. Numerical calculations are performed by using a finite volume method based on the PISO algorithm in a collocated grid system. The range of Reynolds number is chosen to be 50–150. The flow is unsteady laminar and two-dimensional in this Reynolds number range. The mixed convection effect is studied for Richardson number range of 0–2 and the Prandtl number is chosen constant as 0.71. The effect of superimposed thermal buoyancy on flow and isotherm patterns are presented and discussed. The global flow and heat transfer quantities such as overall drag and lift coefficients, local and surface average Nusselt numbers and Strouhal number are calculated and discussed for various Reynolds and Richardson numbers.  相似文献

This article reports a numerical study of double-diffusive convection in a fluid-saturated vertical porous annulus subjected to discrete heat and mass fluxes from a portion of the inner wall. The outer wall is maintained at uniform temperature and concentration, while the top and bottom walls are adiabatic and impermeable to mass transfer. The physical model for the momentum equation is formulated using the Darcy law, and the resulting governing equations are solved using an implicit finite difference technique. The influence of physical and geometrical parameters on the streamlines, isotherms, isoconcentrations, average Nusselt and Sherwood numbers has been numerically investigated in detail. The location of heat and solute source has a profound influence on the flow pattern, heat and mass transfer rates in the porous annulus. For the segment located at the bottom portion of inner wall, the flow rate is found to be higher, whereas the heat and mass transfer rates are higher when the source is placed near the middle of the inner wall. Further, the average Sherwood number increases with Lewis number, while for the average Nusselt number the effect is opposite. The average Nusselt number increases with radius ratio (λ); however, the average Sherwood number increases with radius ratio only up to λ = 5, and for λ > 5 , the average Sherwood number does not increase significantly.  相似文献

The effects of viscous dissipation are considered for natural convection flow past a semi-infinite inclined plate with variable surface temperature. Velocity and temperature profiles, skin friction, and rate of heat transfer are obtained. The effects of Grashof and Prandtl numbers, inclination angle, exponent in the wall temperature variation law, and viscous dissipation parameter on the flow are discussed. It is shown that the time required to reach steady states increases with increasing Prandtl number of the fluid. In addition, an increase in the plate temperature due to viscous dissipation was found to lead to a rise in the average skin friction and a decrease in the average Nusselt number.  相似文献
