By assuming that Maxwell's electromagnetic field equations are valid in a Riemann-Cartan space-time and by using a set of rules to transform from Riemannian kinematics to Riemann-Cartan kinematics, the kinematic aspects of magnetohydrodynamics in a Riemann-Cartan space-time are examined. If the electric conductivity of the fluid is infinite, then the magnetic field conservation laws still hold, but torsion affects the physical interpretation of the equation for proper charge density. A result, based on the Ricci identity foru a and the first Bianchi identity, and describing differential rotation of a charged fluid in a Riemann space-time, is extended to a Riemann-Cartan space-time. The kinematic role played by torsion in this result is examined.  相似文献

In the extension to Riemann-Cartan spacetime, the optical properties of electromagnetic waves are found to depend strongly on the nature of the Lorentz gauge condition. If the Lorentz gauge condition is treated similar to the non-minimal extension of the electromagnetic field to Riemann-Cartan spacetime, then the optical properties of waves are identical to those in riemannian spacetime. If the gauge is treated as an intrinsically Riemann-Cartan condition, then, to the same order of approximation, the optical properties of waves remain the same, except that the polarization vector is no longer parallel propagated along the wave vector.  相似文献

A new derivation of the first two coefficients of the heat kernel expansion for a second-order elliptic differential operator on a Riemann-Cartan manifold with arbitrary torsion is given. The expressions are presented in a very compact and tractable form useful for physical applications. The U(1) gauge structure of torsion and dislocation in three dimensional Riemann-Cartan manifold have been studied. The local topological structure of dislocation have been presented by so-called topological method in which the quantum number is by Hopf indices and Brouwer degree. Furthermore, the relationship between the dislocation lines and Wilson lines of the U(1) gauge theory is discussed by using the Chern-Simons theory.  相似文献

A natural extension of the supersymmetric model of Di Vecchia and Ravndal yields a nontrivial coupling of classical spinning particles to torsion in a Riemann-Cartan geometry. The equations of motion implied by this model coincide with a consistent classical limit of the Heisenberg equations derived from the minimally coupled Dirac equation. Conversely, the latter equation is shown to arise from canonical quantization of the classical system. The Heisenberg equations are obtained exact in all powers of and thus complete the partial results of previous WKB calculations. We touch also on such matters of principle as the mathematical realization of anticommuting variables, the physical interpretation of supersymmetry transformations, and the effective variability of rest mass.  相似文献

We derive effective actions for "spacelike branes" (S-branes) and find a solution describing the formation of fundamental strings in the rolling tachyon background. The S-brane action is a Dirac-Born-Infeld action for Euclidean world volumes defined in the context of time-dependent tachyon condensation of non-BPS (Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield) branes. It includes gauge fields and, in particular, a scalar field associated with translation along the time direction. We show that the BIon spike solutions constructed in this system correspond to the production of a confined electric flux tube (a fundamental string) at late time of the rolling tachyon.  相似文献

In this paper we study Dirac-Hestenes spinor fields (DHSF) on a four-dimensional Riemann-Cartan spacetime (RCST). We prove that these fields must be defined as certain equivalence classes of even sections of the Clifford bundle (over the RCST), thereby being certain particular sections of a new bundle named the spin-Clifford bundle (SCB). The conditions for the existence of the SCB are studied and are shown to be equivalent to Geroch's theorem concerning the existence of spinor structures in a Lorentzian spacetime. We introduce also the covariant and algebraic Dirac spinor fields and compare these with DHSF, showing that all three kinds of spinor fields contain the same mathematical and physical information. We clarify also the notion of (Crumeyrolle's) amorphous spinors (Dirac-Kähler spinor fields are of this type), showing that they cannot be used to describe fermionic fields. We develop a rigorous theory for the covariant derivatives of Clifford fields (sections of the Clifford bundle, CB) and of Dirac-Hestenes spinor fields. We show how to generalize the original Dirac-Hestenes equation in Minkowski spacetime for the case of RCST. Our results are obtained from a variational principle formulated through the multiform derivative approach to Lagrangian field theory in the Clifford bundle.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate spacelike metric foliations in lightlike complete spacetimes. When such a foliation satisfies the strong energy condition RicV (e) ≥ 0 for timelike vectors e, it must be totally geodesic, and the metric is of higher rank, in the sense that each point of the spacetime is contained inside a flat, totally geodesic, timelike rectangle. If in addition RicV(e) = 0, then the metric is (at least locally) a product metric, with the leaves of the foliation tangent to one of the factors.  相似文献

By viewing space-time as a continuum elastic medium and introducing an entropy functional for its elastic deformations, T. Padmanabhan has shown that general relativity emerges from varying the functional and that the latter suggests holography for gravity and yields the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula. In this paper we extend this idea to Riemann-Cartan space-times by constructing an entropy functional for the elastic deformations of space-times with torsion. We show that varying this generalized entropy functional permits to recover the full set of field equations of the Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory. Our generalized functional shows that the contributions to the on-shell entropy of a bulk region in Riemann-Cartan space-times come from the boundary as well as the bulk and hence does not suggest that holography would also apply for gravity with spin in space-times with torsion. It is nevertheless shown that for the specific cases of Dirac fields and spin fluids the system does become holographic. The entropy of a black hole with spin is evaluated and found to be in agreement with Bekenstein-Hawking formula.  相似文献

In this paper we develop an integral formula involving the Ricci and scalar curvatures of a compact spacelike hypersurface M in a spacetime equipped with a timelike closed conformal vector field K (in short, conformally stationary-closed spacetime), and we apply it, when is Einstein, in order to establish sufficient conditions for M to be a leaf of the foliation determined by K and to obtain some non-existence results. The method of nonholonomic mapping is utilized to construct a Riemann-Cartan space embedded into a known Riemann-Cartan space,which includes two special cases that a Weitzenbck space and a Riemann-Cartan space are respectively embedded into a Euclidean space and a Riemann space.By means of this mapping theory,the nonholonomic corresponding relation between the autoparallels of two Riemman-Cartan spaces is investigated.In particular,an autoparallel in a Riemann-Cartan space can be mapped into a geodesic line in a Riemann space and an autoparallel in Weitzenbck space be mapped into a geodesic line in Euclidean space.Based on the Lagrange-d'Alembert principle,the equations of motion for dynamical systems in Riemman-Cartan space should be autoparallel equations of the space.As applications,the problem of autoparallel motion of spinless particles,Chaplygin's nonholonomic systems and a rigid body rotating with a fixed point are investigated in space with torsion.  相似文献

We consider massive spin 1 fields, in Riemann-Cartan space-times, described by Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory. We show that this approach induces a coupling between the spin 1 field and the space-time torsion which breaks the usual equivalence with the Proca theory, but that such equivalence is preserved in the context of the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity.  相似文献

The higher dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory in Riemann-Cartan space is discussed. To clarify its implications, we investigate the simplest five-dimensional case of the theory in detail. The Einstein-like, Maxwell, and Dirac equations in four-dimensional space-time are obtained by reducing the corresponding five-dimensional field equations. The effect of spin-spin interaction induced by torsion is revealed by analyzing the Dirac equation in this case.  相似文献
