The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of hcp transition metal (TM = Fe, Co or Ni) nanowires TM4 encapsulated inside zigzag nanotubes C(m, 0) (m = 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12), along with TM n (n = 4, 10 or 13) encapsulated inside C(12, 0), have been systematically investigated using the first-principle calculations. The results show that the TM nanowires can be inserted inside a variety of zigzag carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exothermically, except from the systems TM4@(7, 0) and TM13@(12, 0) which are endothermic. The charge is transferred from TM nanowires to CNTs, and the transferred charge increases with decreasing CNT diameter or increasing nanowire thickness. The magnetic moments of hybrid systems are smaller than those of the freestanding TM nanowires, especially for the atoms on the outermost shell of the nanowires. The magnetic moment per TM atom of TM/CNT system increases with increasing CNT diameter or decreasing nanowire thickness. Both the density of states and spin charge density analysis show that the spin polarization and the magnetic moments of all hybrid systems mainly originate from the TM nanowires, implying these systems can be applied in magnetic data storage devices.

The diffusion dynamics and structure evolvement of the transition metal (TM=Ni, Cu, Au, and Pt) atoms decorating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with differences have been systematically studied by Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. The studies show that TM atoms can be encapsulated inside, aggregated and even wrapped on the surface of the CNT, which depend on the interactions among TM–TM and TM–C during the spontaneous diffusion process. The decorating effect is greatly influenced by the diameters of CNTs, TM atoms tend to be encapsulated inside the tube in the relatively large CNTs, while they are inclined to stack on the surface for the small ones. More interestingly, Au and Pt atoms would wrap around the smaller CNT, whereas Ni and Cu atoms are still clustering outside of the CNTs with the increase of the number of TM atoms. Simulation results indicate that Pt and Au possess a better wetting effect with CNT than Ni and Cu.

Under the generalized gradient approximation, the electronic structures and magnetic properties of Fe(1-x)Cox alloy nanowires encapsulated inside zigzag (10,0) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are investigated systematically using firstprinciple density functional theory calculations. For the fully relaxed Fe(1-x)Cox/CNT structures, all the C atoms relax outwards, and thus the diameters of the CNTs are slightly increased. Formation energy analysis shows that the combining processes of all Fe(1-x)Cox/CNT systems are exothermic, and therefore the Fe(1-x)Coxalloy nanowires can be encapsulated into semiconducting zigzag (10,0) CNTs and form stable hybrid structures. The charges are transferred from the Fe(1-x)Coxnanowires to the more electronegative CNTs, and the Fe-C/Co-C bonds formed have polar covalent bond characteristics. Both the spin polarization and total magnetic moment of the Fe(1-x)Cox/CNT system are smaller than those of the corresponding freestanding Fe(1-x)Coxnanowire, and the magnetic moment of the Fe(1-x)Cox/CNT system decreases monotonously with increasing Co concentration, but the Fe(1-x)Cox/CNT systems still have a large magnetic moment, implying that they can be utilized in high-density magnetic recording devices.

In this study, we carried out experiments to study penetration of airborne carbon nanotubes (CNTs) through a screen filter. An electrospray system was employed to aerosolize suspensions of multi-wall CNTs. The generated airborne CNTs were characterized by electron microscopy, and the length and diameter were measured. In the filtration experiments, the challenging CNTs are classified by a differential mobility analyzer. Monodisperse CNTs with the same electrical mobility were then employed to challenge the screen filter. Penetration was measured for CNTs in the range of 100–400 nm mobility diameters. The results showed that the CNT penetration was less than the penetration for a sphere with the same mobility diameter, which was mainly due to the larger interception length of the CNTs. We compared the modeling results using single-fiber filtration efficiency theories with the experimental data, and found that the effective interception length can be approximated by the CNT aerodynamic diameter multiplying a scaling factor. A hypothesis is proposed to understand the observation.

We report a novel magnetic phenomenon consisting of the formation of helical spin configurations during the magnetization of densely packed ferromagnetic nanowires encapsulated inside carbon nanotubes. We studied the hysteresis loops when the magnetic fields are applied parallel and perpendicular to the nanotubes axes. We also performed theoretical calculations on aligned nanowire arrays that clearly indicate the creation of helical spin vortices in the hysteresis loops. The latter are caused by the presence of strong dipolar interactions among neighboring wires.

Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to investigate the structures of Lennard–Jones(LJ) nanowires(NWs) encapsulated in carbon nanotubes(CNTs). We find that the structures of NWs in a small CNT only adopt multi-shell motifs, while the structures of NWs in a larger CNT tend to adopt various motifs. Among these structures, three of them have not been reported previously. The phase boundaries among these structures are obtained regarding filling fractions, as well as the interaction between NWs and CNTs.

Eu(III) titanate nanotubes and nanowires have been successfully synthesized by solvothermal method using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as removable templates. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis. It is demonstrated that CNTs are fully coated with an amorphous Eu2(TiO3)3 layer, which is about 10 nm thick and almost continuous and uniform. After the Eu2(TiO3)3/CNTs composites have been calcined at various temperatures, Eu2(TiO3)3 nanotubes and nanowires are obtained by removing the CNTs templates. The diameter of the Eu2(TiO3)3 nanotubes is 40–60 nm, which is consistent with that of CNTs. Both nanotubes and nanowires have a narrow distribution of diameters. The fluorescence properties of the Eu2(TiO3)3 nanotubes and nanowires calcined at various temperatures have been investigated. The results indicate that when the Eu2(TiO3)3/CNTs composites were calcined at 700 °C for 5 h, the Eu2(TiO3)3 nanotubes obtained can be effectively excited by 395 nm light, and exhibit strong red emission around 616 nm. It is very interesting to discover that a few residual carbons doped in Eu2(TiO3)3 nanotubes and many oxygen vacancies could promote the intensity of red emission peak of Eu3+ ions. In addition, Eu2(TiO3)3 nanowires calcined at 900 °C for 5 h also have a strong red emission peak due to many oxygen vacancies and defects formed on the surface of the nanowires and inside them.

Biomolecules encapsulated in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted much interest and facilitated exciting opportunities for biological and biomedical applications of CNTs. Understanding the fundamental interaction and change in biomolecules during encapsulation is indispensable but remains a challenge for both theoretical and experimental investigations. This paper focuses on the interaction between HIV replication inhibitor peptide (HRIP) and CNTs in a neutral solution with molecular dynamics simulation. We observed that HRIP spontaneously inserts into the CNTs and oscillates around the center of the tube, where the non-covalent interaction is minimum. The effects of the diameters of the CNTs on HRIP were investigated. The optimal diameter of the CNT that can provide the most effective encapsulation and causes minimum conformational change in HRIP was found. The present results provide valuable insights in the understanding of nanoscale drug delivery using CNT-based devices.

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we studied the morphologies of Lennard-Jones liquid encapsulated in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for a wide range of liquid–CNT interaction, system size and temperature. The morphology of liquid is found to be sensitive to the filling ratio of liquid (a ratio of liquid volume to the available volume of CNT pore) and the liquid–CNT interaction. The ‘phase diagram’, namely by the morphologies versus the liquid–CNT interaction and the filling ratio, is obtained. In most cases, the liquid inside CNTs forms a thin liquid shell attached to a carbon wall when the filling ratio is small. With the increasing of the filling ratio, liquid tends to form droplet. As the filling ratio increases further, liquids form a cylinder with finite length. Finally, the whole inner space of CNT was filled with liquid when the filling ratio is large enough. Current studies could shed light on the adsorption and flow of liquid inside CNTs.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with totally hollow channels and/or totally filled copper nanowires have been fabricated by methane decomposition using copper microgrid as a catalyst at 1173 K. The formation mechanism of CNTs with totally hollow channels is carbon precipitation at carbon-metal interface via the preferable surface diffusion mode of carbon. The selectivity of these CNTs can be improved by increasing the purity of copper catalysts and adding hydrogen in the feed gas. To form long and continuous copper nanowires up to 8–10 μm the filling of copper in the CNT channel requires the liquid or quasi-liquid state capillary adsorption of nanosized copper at 1173 K under the thermal driving force. The filling volume ratio of copper to total nano-channel of the CNTs is firstly increased to about 50%. The copper inside the CNTs is of single crystalline form and face centered cubic (fcc) structure. The method is useful for further controlled synthesis of CNTs with totally hollow channels and/or totally copper filled nanowires.

Purification of carbon nanotubes grown by thermal CVD
We show the results of a set of purifications on carbon nanotubes (CNT) by acid and basic treatments. CNTs were obtained by thermal decomposition of camphor at 850 °C in a CVD growth system, by means of a growth process catalyzed by iron clusters originating from the addition of ferrocene in the precursors mixture. The purification procedures involved HNO3, H2SO4, HSO3Cl and NaOH for different process temperatures.As-grown CNTs showed a consistent presence of metal catalyst (about 6 wt%), evidenced by TGA. The purification treatments led to a certain amount of opening of the CNT tips, with a consequent loss of metal catalyst encapsulated in tips. This is also confirmed by BET analysis, which showed an increase of the surface area density of CNT after the purification.FT-IR and XPS revealed the presence of carboxylic groups on the CNT surface chemically modified by the harsh environment of the purification process.Among the various treatments that have been tested, the 1:3 solution of nitric and sulphuric acid was the most effective in modifying the CNT surface and inducing the formation of functional groups.

Previous energetic considerations have led to the belief that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of 4 A in diameter are the smallest stable CNTs. Using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, we find that a stable 3 A CNT can be grown inside a multiwalled carbon nanotube. Density functional calculations indicate that the 3 A CNT is the armchair CNT(2,2) with a radial breathing mode at 787 cm(-1). Each end can be capped by half of a C12 cage (hexagonal prism) containing tetragons.

High density heterostructures of carbon nanotubes encapsulated single crystalline tin nanowires have been characterized by Raman spectromicroscopy. The morphology, composition and structure of the synthesized nanoheterostructures were examined by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. The Raman spectra obviously manifest the crystalline nano-graphite within amorphous carbon walls in the heterostructures. The Raman image reproduces the pristine heterostructures of the CNTs as seen in SEM image, which illustrate the single nanowires oriented uniformly grown on micro-graphitic fibers. It was found that the resultant heterostructures are luminescent which was attributed to crystalline nano-graphite embedded in the amorphous carbon matrix, which is a consequence of excitons localization within an increasing number of sp2 rich clusters. The contrast in the Raman image reflects nonuniform distribution of the graphite cluster size which acts as the radiative centers. The luminescent property was reviewed. The enhanced Raman spectra and luminescent property by the well-defined tin nanowires inside the heterostructures was revealed.

We have investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe, Co, and Ni nanowires encapsulated in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using spin polarized ab initio calculation. The incorporated systems with hollow region between the nanowire and the C shell have the enhanced magnetic moments compared to the ferromagnetic nanowires tightly wrapped by CNTs. The Co nanowire encapsulated in CNTs is a strong ferromagnet and has high spin polarization regardless of the distance between the nanowire and the C shell. The results show that the Co-filled CNTs are useful for spin polarized transport nanodevice.

We report on the results of experimental study of an array of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA CNTs) by scanning tunnel microscopy (STM). It is shown that upon the application of an external electric field to the STM probe/VA CNT system, individual VA CNTs are combined into bundles whose diameter depends on the radius of the tip of the STM probe. The memristor effect in VA CNTs is detected. For the VA CNT array under investigation, the resistivity ratio in the low- and high-resistance states at a voltage of 180 mV is 28. The results can be used in the development of structures and technological processes for designing nanoelectronics devices based on VA CNT arrays, including elements of ultrahigh-access memory cells for vacuum microelectronics devices.

Using the micromagnetic simulations, we have investigated the magnetization reversal and magnetostatic interaction of Fe3Pt nanowires arrays with wire diameters lower than 40 nm. By changing the number of interacting nanowires, N, interwire distance, a, and wire diameter, D, the effects of magnetostatic interaction on coercivity and remanence are investigated in detail. According to the simulated results, the contribution to the stray field induced by surface perpendicular magnetization at the end of wires is established.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) silica coated nickel grids using carbon monoxide as carbon source and iron nanoparticles as catalyst. The produced CNTs were as large as 11 nm in diameter. Investigations on the CNT deformations based on high-resolution TEM images showed that the deformation of CNTs due to their interaction with the substrate occurs at diameters larger than 2.7 nm. Small deformation of free standing tubes was found to occur at diameters above approximately 4.5 nm.
