A novel method is described for the measurement of long pitch lengths in chiral nematic liquid crystals using the bowing of reverse twist disclination lines in 90° twisted nematic devices. The method has been used to measure pitch lengths of up to 50 mm, significantly longer than previously possible using existing methods.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental studies of the director distribution of a chiral nematic liquid crystal placed in a wedge-shaped cell with weak surface anchoring were performed. We measured local value of pitch as function of position inside each Grandjean-Cano zone by registering selective reflection spectra from narrow stripes cut from each Cano zone. We also measured the rotation of the polarisation plane as function of thickness of the wedge sample. These data allowed determination of the angle between the local director and the easy direction on the surface. The obtained director distributions in individual Cano zones were compared with the results of theory and thus used for restoration of the actual shape of the surface anchoring potential.  相似文献

Glass-forming liquid crystals consisting of a cyclohexane central core with (S)-1-phenyl-ethylamine and (4-cyanophenyl)naphthalene pendants were synthesized as hosts for racemizable (R)-dinaphtho[2,1-d:1',2'-f][1,3]dioxepin, a chiral dopant. Chiral-nematic films 14, 22, and 35 mum thick were prepared for thermal and photoinduced racemization at temperatures from 95 to 130°C, i.e. in the mesomorphic temperature range, over a period of hours to days. Spatially modulated photoracemization was accomplished with an insignificant contribution from the thermal process at temperatures around 100°C over a period of up to 3 h. With an absorbance per unit thickness of 6.2 mum-1 at 334 nm, the photochemical process was essentially confined to the irradiated surface, thereby setting up counter-diffusion of the two enantiomers through the film, and hence the pitch gradient as visualized by atomic force microscopy. The significantly widened selective reflection band was interpreted with the Good-Karali theory extended for a gradient-pitch film. Furthermore, the bandwidth was found to increase with decreasing racemization temperature or with increasing film thickness, further validating the presence of a pitch gradient as a result of controlled photoracemization.  相似文献

A method to produce predefined patterns in solid iridescent films of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) by differential heating of aqueous CNC suspensions during film casting has been discovered. Placing materials of different temperatures beneath an evaporating CNC suspension results in watermark-like patterns of different reflection wavelength incorporated within the final film structure. The patterned areas are of different thickness and different chiral nematic pitch than the surrounding film; heating results in thicker areas of longer pitch. Thermal pattern creation in CNC films is proposed to be caused by differences in evaporation rates and thermal motion in the areas of the CNC suspension corresponding to the pattern-producing object and the surrounding, unperturbed suspension. Pattern formation was found to occur during the final stages of drying during film casting, once the chiral nematic structure is kinetically trapped in the gel state. It is thus possible to control the reflection wavelength of CNC films by an external process in the absence of additives.  相似文献

The phase of a liquid crystal (LC) changing from a nematic phase to a cholesteric (Ch) mesophase is achieved by adding different ratios of chiral dopants S811. By studying the transmission spectrum, we are able to measure the helical pitch in cholesteric phase. The pitch in the mixtures of nematic E7 and chiral dopants S811 as a function of the concentration of the dopant and temperature is investigated. The sensitivity of the selective reflection notch of the cholesteric phase to the thermal tuning depends strongly on the ratios of the chiral dopants. It reveals that the influence of temperature is more profound for those cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) which exhibit smectic A (SmA) at lower temperatures. When fitted using Keating's formula, the helical pitch calculated from our experimental results lies on the predicted curve. Optimised ratios of the mixture CLCs for the optimised reflection band with the specified wavelength ranging from 467 nm to 2123 nm are suggested.  相似文献

We report a simple interference method to determine the dispersion of the extraordinary refractive index and birefringence of highly conjugated and coloured nematic liquid crystals used as light-emitting materials in organic electroluminescent devices. The measurements are made in the nematic glass phase at room temperature. The birefringence is highly dispersive and values up to 1.1 are obtained. Chiral groups are incorporated into the end chains giving a chiral nematic liquid crystal with a very wide stopband in the visible region. The Berreman matrix method is used to simulate transmission through the chiral nematic liquid crystal cell using the refractive index parameters obtained experimentally. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is found.  相似文献

Lattice structures, including reflection lattice planes and lattice constant, of liquid-crystal blue phase I (BPI) are studied via the measurements on reflection spectrum and Kossel diagram as concentration of a chiral dopant is changed. Peaks of the reflection wavelength in BPI are mainly dominated by the lattice plane and the lattice constant, which are affected by the chiral concentration. In the chiral nematic state, as decreasing the chiral concentration the reflection peak will shift to a longer wavelength because the helical pitch linearly depends on the chiral concentration and becomes longer. However, this dependence of the chiral concentration and reflection wavelength is broken in the BPI. The reflection peak of BPI moves to a short wavelength when the chiral concentration is less due to the contraction of the lattice constant as well as helical pitch. Moreover, when the concentration of the chiral dopant increases over a certain value, a discontinuous shift in reflection peak occurs due to the production of the different lattice planes. It means that the relationship between the chiral concentration and the helical pitch in BPI is not the same as it in the chiral nematic phase and should be reconsidered.  相似文献

Achiral dyes in isotropic (acetyl)(ethyl)cellulose (AEC) solutions display no induced CD signals irrespective of acetyl content, polymer concentration or dye content. When dissolved in anisotropic AEC solutions, the dye molecules show strong induced CD bands that disappear when the phases are heated above the anisotropic/isotropic phase transition temperature. The liquid crystal induced circular dichroism (LCICD) spectra for the dyes in a series of well-characterized AEC mesophases, whose handedness depends on solvent and acetyl content, reveal that the sign of the LCICD signal is determined by the supramolecular structural features of the host matrices. Thus, acridine orange (AO) dissolved in a left-handed liquid crystalline AEC solution displays a negative LCICD whereas a positive LCICD was observed when the AO is dissolved in a right-handed AEC mesophase. The sign and intensity of the LCICD signals change with acetyl degree of substitution, solvent and temperature. In all cases, changes in sign of the CD peak correlated with changes in handedness of the chiral nematic structure, and the intensity of the CD peak increased with increasing chiral nematic pitch for a given solvent and polymer concentration. Induced circular dichroism is thus a useful probe of chiral nematic structure in these systems.  相似文献

The recording of polarization gratings in films of a cholesteric liquid crystalline polymer with different helix pitch was studied in detail. For this purpose, the cholesteric mixture of the nematic azobenzene‐containing copolymer with a chiral‐photochromic dopant was prepared. The utilization of such mixture has made possible to realize dual optical photorecording in one system, first due to the phototuning of the helix pitch by UV light and second the polarization grating recording process by exposure with polarized visible light. The diffraction efficiency strongly depends on the cholesteric helix pitch and films thickness: the increase of the confinement ratio d/p (where d, film thickness; p, helix pitch) results in growth of the diffraction efficiency. Comparison of the induction of polarization gratings in cholesteric, nematic (copolymer without chiral dopant), and amorphous (nonannealed) cholesteric films revealed that only the cholesteric films were characterized by significant oscillations in the diffraction efficiency signal as well as by the presence of the maximum in the first‐order diffraction efficiency in the initial stage of the grating recording process. It was found that in addition to the polarization grating surface relief gratings (SRGs) were also formed in the studied systems, however, the amplitude of the SRG inscribed in the cholesteric films was lower (~20 nm) compared to the grating amplitude obtained in nematic films (~60 nm). Moreover, increasing helix pitch resulted in a decrease of the SRG amplitude. The obtained experimental data demonstrate the great potential of cholesteric LC mixtures of such type for different applications as photoactive materials for photonics. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Helical polymers appended with paired structurally different enantiomers, which have opposing helical sense preferences, yield a new kind of relationship between optical activity and temperature, and also reveal unusual details of the nature of chiral interactions. Consistent with a statistical physical theory developed for these experiments, the proportion of the competing chiral groups, determined by synthesis, fixes the compensation temperature at which the helical senses are equally populated. The lyotropic liquid crystal state formed by these polymers yields therefore a nematic state at any chosen temperature over a very wide range, with a cholesteric state arising with tightening pitch as temperature deviates from this point. Far from the nematic temperature, the pitch reaches the nanometer scale and therefore the reflection of visible light. Before crossing zero at the nematic temperature, the optical activity becomes so large that it may be observed with the unaided eye through crossed polarizers.  相似文献

The isothermal formation of concentric colour domains has been observed in a cholesteric mixture doped with 10 wt % of a photochromic nematic material. The host cholesteric mixture included the Merck materials BL131a and BL130, while the photochromic dopant was a mixture of 4-n-butyl-4'-n-alkoxyazobenzenes (BAAB). The helical pitch of the host cholesteric mixture was increased, as expected, on addition of the photochromic nematic material prior to irradiation with the molecules in the purely trans-configuration. On irradiation with low power (0.6 mW) argon ion laser light, cis-isomers formed within the interaction region and concentric colour domains appeared. Selective reflection from the colour domains occurred in the 400-560 nm spectral range. The coloured domains persisted in the time period following irradiation and extended beyond the interaction region because of diffusion of the cis-isomers. Using the diffusion equation, an expression has been obtained for the average concentration of cis-isomers in each of the coloured domains and the dependence of the reflection wavelength upon the concentration of cis-isomers has been determined.  相似文献

A series of polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) films were prepared from cholesteric liquid crystal (Ch‐LC) mixtures containing different components such as non‐reactive LC monomer, polymerizable monomer, chiral dopant, dye, and photoinitiator upon polymerization. The influence of the polymerizable monomer and dye of Ch‐LC mixtures on the reflection properties was investigated. The reflection bandwidth for all the samples can be increased by photo‐polymerization, and the network upon polymerization derived from two different polymerizable monomers with both one and two functional groups is more effective than that from one polymerizable monomer for broadening the reflection band. Especially, a dye‐doped Ch‐LC film can reflect incident light with the bandwidth over the wavelength range of 550–2350 nm, which is due to a greater pitch gradient formed inside of Ch‐LC film. The gradient pitch network structure was firstly demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with the film prepared from high diacrylate monomer concentration and subsequently proved by using a wash‐out/refill method. The nematic liquid crystals monomers was infiltrated into the polymer network that was prefabricated by removing the low molar weight LCs from the original PSCLCs film, and SEM exhibited the existence of a pitch gradient across the film thickness. The refilled nematic liquid crystals film showed broadband reflection after polymerzition, too. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Novel light-sensitive chiral dopants are studied as a light-sensitive component in chiral liquid crystals which may be used in tunable optical devices. Light-induced cis-trans- isomerization of chiral dopants results in changes of helical twisting power which translates into variations of helical pitch. Due to the light absorption in the liquid crystal cell the pitch variation is non-uniform across the cell, which leads, at first, to a deformation of cholesteric layers, and then to the formation of cholesteric bubbles. The sequence of structural changes has a distinct visual pattern and occurs at the surface close to the UV light source. Small deformations of cholesteric layers and bubbles are unstable and disappear after removing UV irradiation. The increasing size of the cholesteric bubbles results in better stability; large bubbles do not disappear after removing UV light. A theoretical model is suggested to describe the undulations of cholesteric layers.  相似文献

A series of acrylate monomers with alkoxy tails of varying lengths are synthesised and polymerised. The butoxy analogue had a stable enantiotropic cholesteric liquid crystalline phase which formed a grandjean texture when prepared as a thin film between glass slides. The polymer was mixed with a low molar mass nematic liquid crystal in various proportions and the pitch of the chiral nematic phases were determined using a cano‐wedge cell technique. The polymer prepared from (S)‐2‐(4‐butoxyphenyl‐4′‐benzoyloxy)‐1‐methyl ethyl acrylate had a pitch length of 113 nm which indicates that the polymer film could be employed in optical devices requiring selective reflection of light with short wavelengths in the region of 170 nm. The preparation is reported of particles of photopolymerisable monomer/chiral dopant composites with a crystalline (Cr)‐chiral nematic (N*) phase transition. By mixing particles with different pitches of the N* phase in the Cr phase and crosslinking the liquid crystal (LC) monomer molecules by photopolymerisation in the planarly oriented N* phase, an N*‐LC composite film with a non‐uniform pitch distribution was obtained. Experimental results show that the bandwidth of the reflection spectrum and the location of reflection band of the composite films can be controlled accurately by controlling the pitch lengths of the N* phase of the particles. Effects of polymerisation temperature and UV intensity on the non‐uniform pitch distribution of N*‐LC composite films were investigated.  相似文献

The optical microscopic mass transport (OMMT) method was utilized to determine the cholesteric pitch values of the mixtures of mesogenic and non-mesogenic chiral species in nematic materials. The cholesteric pitch was determined by transient analysis of the diffusion profile established by allowing an initial cholestric composition (solute) to diffuse under semi-infinite linear boundary conditions into an oriented thin film of its corresponding nematic solvent. During the steady-state diffusion, where the initial concentration (pitch) remains constant, the transient analysis of the profile with a polarization microscope exhibits a maximum number of pitch discontinuity domains. The evaluation of the unknown pitch was carried out by extrapolation of the diffusion pitch gradient to the original diffusion source by using the exact relation between the pitch and the film thickness. The method is experimentally simple; at constant temperature and pressure, determination of the pitch depends only on the film thickness. There is a good agreement between the pitch values obtained with this method and those from conventional techniques.  相似文献

Colloidal chiral nematic suspensions of cellulose were prepared from dissolving grade wood pulp. On evaporation of the water, the suspension dries down to give iridescent cellulose films. The optical properties of the films may be characterized by incorporating dyes in the films, and following the ordering of the dye molecules by measurement of induced circular dichroism (ICD). Structural changes to the films, such as decreasing the chiral nematic pitch by increasing the salt content and increasing the chiral nematic order through magnetic alignment, can be monitored by measuring the changes in ICD.  相似文献
