LetR be a ring with unit and invariant basis property. In [1], the authors define a functorK(_;R):TOP/LIP c-LPEP by combining the open cone construction of [7] with a geometric module construction and show this functor is a homology theory. This paper shows that if attention is restricted to objects TOP/LIP c with a homotopy colimit structure, then the functorK(_;R) is a Quinn homology theory, In particular, for each having a homotopy colimit structure,K(;R) is a homotopy colimit in the category of -spectra. Furthermore, the constituent spectra of this homotopy colimit are obtained naturally from the fibres of .Partially supported by the National Science Foundation under grant number DMS88-03148.Partially supported by the SNF (Denmark) under grant number 11-7792.

Summary For differential operatorsM of second order (as defined in (1.1)) we describe a method to prove Range-Domain implications—Muu and an algorithm to construct these functions , , , . This method has been especially developed for application to non-inverse-positive differential operators. For example, for non-negativea 2 and for given functions = we require =C 0[0, 1] C 2([0, 1]–T) whereT is some finite set), (M) (t)(t), (t[0, 1]–T) and certain additional conditions for eachtT. Such Range-Domain implications can be used to obtain a numerical error estimation for the solution of a boundary value problemMu=r; further, we use them to guarantee the existence of a solution of nonlinear boundary value problems between the bounds- and .

We consider a functional differential equation (1) (t)=F(t,) fort[0,+) together with a generalized Nicoletti condition (2)H()=. The functionF: [0,+)×C 0[0,+)B is given (whereB denotes the Banach space) and the value ofF (t, ) may depend on the values of (t) fort[0,+);H: C 0[0,+)B is a given linear operator and B. Under suitable assumptions we show that when the solution :[0,+)B satisfies a certain growth condition, then there exists exactly one solution of the problem (1), (2).

Given a regular bounded open set R 2,, >0 andg L q () withq>2, we prove, under compatibility and safe load conditions ong, the existence of a minimizing pair for the functional, over closed setsK 2 and functionsu C0( ) C2(/K); here ¦[Du]¦ denotes the jump ofDu acrossK and 1 is the 1-dimensional Hausdorff measure.Dedicated to Enrico Magenes for his 70th birthday

Remez-type inequalities provide estimates for the size of polynomials on given sets KR m (or C m ) when the magnitude of polynomials on largeldquo subsets of K is known. We shall study this question on smooth sets K in R m and C m and show how the smoothness of K effects the estimates.

For any algebraA let(A) be the set of partial automorphisms (isomorphisms between subalgebras). With the natural multiplication it is an inductive groupoid in the sense of Ehresmann.(A) is complete iff every subset of(A) which is compatible with the semi-ordering has an upper bound. The fact, whether(A) is complete or not, depends on the defining operations ofA. For every direct familyF = (, (A ) ,(), , of algebras such that all ,, with are one-to-one functions, the direct limit is complete iff all(A) are complete. We give some theorems on the decomposition of inductive groupoids, and employ them in proving the completeness of(A) to variousA.In particular, we obtain that, in case whenG is a finite group,(G) is complete iffG is either cyclic or direct product of a noncyclic group of order 4 and a cyclic group of odd order. For finite acyclic ringsR and finite fieldsK the inductive groupoids(R) and(K) are complete.Further we deal with the question, to what extent algebras are determined by their inductive groupoids. (An algebraA of a classS is defined by(A) iff, for any algebraB of the classS, isomorphism between(A) and(B) implies isomorphism betweenA andB.) Particular attention is paid to finite groups. In general, algebras of classesS are not defined within the classS by their inductive groupoids.

Using a capacity approach, we prove in this article that it is always possible to define a realization of the Laplacian on L 2() with generalized Robin boundary conditions where is an arbitrary open subset of R n and is a Borel measure on the boundary of . This operator generates a sub-Markovian C 0-semigroup on L 2(). If d=d where is a strictly positive bounded Borel measurable function defined on the boundary and the (n–1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure on , we show that the semigroup generated by the Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions has always Gaussian estimates with modified exponents. We also obtain that the spectrum of the Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions in L p () is independent of p[1,). Our approach constitutes an alternative way to Daners who considers the (n–1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure on the boundary. In particular, it allows us to construct a conterexample disproving Daners' closability conjecture.

In this note we consider a reaction-diffusion problem which describes a simple model chemical reaction scheme for quadratic autocatalysis with linear decay. We show that withk>1 (wherek is a parameter measuring the relative strength of the decay step to the autocatalytic step) the dimensionless unreacting state 1, 0 is globally asymptotically stable, with 1+0(t –1/2) and 0(t –1/2 e (k–1)t) ast-. Here and are the concentrations of the reactant and the autocatalyst respectively, andt is time. The casek<1 has been considered in detail by Merkin et al. [1].

Asymptotic estimates, expressed in terms of the value of the modulus of continuity of r-th order (r2) at the point t=/n of a functionf C 2 or of the (, )-derivative of a functionf C B C, are established for the deviations of continuous periodic functions from their Fourier sums.Translated from Ukrainskii Matematicheskii Zhurnal, Vol. 42, No. 6, pp. 747–755, June, 1990.

There is a natural duality between orbits of a real form G of a complex semisimple group G on a homogeneous rational manifold Z=G /P and those of the complexification K of any of its maximal compact subgroups K: (,) is a dual pair if is a K-orbit. The cycle space C() is defined to be the connected component containing the identity of the interior of {g:g() is non-empty and compact}. Using methods which were recently developed for the case of open G-orbits, geometric properties of cycles are proved, and it is shown that C() is contained in a domain defined by incidence geometry. In the non-Hermitian case this is a key ingredient for proving that C() is a certain explicitly computable universal domain.Research of the first author partially supported by Schwerpunkt Global methods in complex geometry and SFB-237 of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The second author was supported by a stipend of the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst.

We say that an ordered set P is spanned by a family C of chains if P=(P, ) is the transitive closure of {(C, | C) C C. It is shown that there is a function h: such that if P is spanned by k< chains, then P has a finite cutset-number h(k) (i.e. for any xP, there is a finite set F of size |F|h(k)–1, such that the elements of F are incomparable with x and {x}F meets every maximal chain of P). The function h is exponentially bounded but eventually dominates any polynomial function, even if it is only required that there are at most h(k) pairwise disjoint maximal chains in P, whenever P is spanned by k< chains.

Let be an infinitely divisible probability measure onR n without Gaussian component and let be its Lévy measure. Suppose that is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure . We investigate the structure of the set n of admissible translates of . This yields a unified presentation of previously known results. We also show that if(S)>0 then is equivalent to , under the assumption that supp =R n , whereS is the closure of the semigroup generated by the support of .The research of this author is supported by KBN Grant. The research of this author is supported by AFSOR Grant No. 90-0168, and the University of Tennessee Science Alliance, a State of Tennessee Center of Excellence.

Within Archimedean -groups, and with an infinite cardinal or , we consider X-hulls where X stands for any of the following classes of -groups: -projectable; laterally -complete; boundedly laterally -complete; conditionally -complete; combinations of the preceding, together with divisibility and/or relative uniform completeness. All these hulls exist, and may be obtained by iterated adjunction of the required extra elements, within the essential hull. When the -groups is relatively -complemented one step in the iteration suffices for several crucial properties. We derive from the above a considerable number of equations involving combinations of these hull operators.

Summary We apply here the method of interior parallels of Makai and Pólya to the boundary value problem (3). The resulting bounds (11) and (11) for the functionalQ() contain as limit cases the bounds (2) and (1) obtained by Pólya [9] for torsional rigidity (case=0) and for the lowest eigenfrequency of a membrane (case 1).

If a group acts simply transitively on the vertices of an affine building with connected diagram, then must be of typeà n–1 for somen2, and must have a presentation of a simple type. The casen=2, when is a tree, has been studied in detail. We consider the casen=3, motivated particularly by the case when is the building ofG=PGL(3,K),K a local field, and when G. We exhibit such a group whenK=F q ((X)),q any prime power. Our study leads to combinatorial objects which we calltriangle presentations. These triangle presentations give rise to some new buildings of typeà 2.

Given a large weighted Hardy space we show there exists a composition operatorC with that maps from that space into the unweighted Dirichlet space and lies in every Schatten p-class for 0<p<. This is in contrast to the situation in which the image space is a smaller weighted Dirichlet space. It is known that in that case it is not possible to find such a composition operator that is bounded. This research was supported in part by a summer stipend from Bellarmine College.

For an odd prime powerq the infinite field GF(q 2 )= n0 GF (q 2n ) is explicitly presented by a sequence (f n)1 ofN-polynomials. This means that, for a suitably chosen initial polynomialf 1, the defining polynomialsf nGF(q)[x] of degrees2 n are constructed by iteration of the transformation of variablexx+1/x and have linearly independent roots over GF(q). In addition, the sequences are trace-compatible in the sense that the relative traces map the corresponding roots onto each other. In this first paper the caseq1 (mod 4) is considered and the caseq3 (mod 4) will be dealt with in a second paper. This specific construction solves a problem raised by A. Scheerhorn in [11].

Usually, an abelian -group, even an archimedean -group, has a relatively large infinity of distinct a-closures. Here, we find a reasonably large class with unique and perfectly describable a-closure, the class of archimedean -groups with weak unit which are -convex. ( is the group of rationals.) Any C(X, ) is -convex and its unique a-closure is the Alexandroff algebra of functions on X defined from the clopen sets; this is sometimes C(X).

We establish asymptotically unimprovable interpolation analogs of Lebesgue-type inequalities on the classes of periodic infinitely differentiable functions C C whose elements can be represented in the form of convolutions with fixed generating kernels. We obtain asymptotic equalities for upper bounds of approximations by interpolation trigonometric polynomials on the classes C , and C H .Translated from Ukrainskyi Matematychnyi Zhurnal, Vol. 56, No. 4, pp. 495–505, April, 2004.

Let 1, 2, ... be a sequence of i.i.d. random variables with positive mean and finite variance and letr(b), b0, be real numbers tending to 0 asb . Definings n=1+...+n andS n=Sn(b)=sn+r(b)n, the stopping time =(b)=inf {n>/1:Sn >b} whereb=b(b) , will be considered with special regard to the excess over the boundaryR b=s+r(b)–b. It turns out that the limiting distribution ofR b is the same as in the caser(b)0 for allb. Proving this, Blackwell's renewal theorem and its integral version have to be established first in the above stated situation. Finally, an expansion ofE to vanishing terms asb will be provided and applied to some examples arising in economics.
