We have studied the microscopic structure, thermodynamics of adsorption, and phase behavior of Lennard-Jones fluid in slitlike pores with walls modified due to preadsorption of chain molecules. The chain species are grafted at the walls by terminating segments. Our theoretical considerations are based on a density functional approach in the semigrand canonical ensemble. The applied constraint refers to the constant number of grafted chain molecules in the pore without restriction of the number of chains at each of the walls. We have observed capillary condensation of Lennard-Jones fluid combined with the change of the distribution of chains from nonsymmetric to symmetric with respect to the pore walls. The phase diagrams of the model are analyzed in detail, dependent on the pore width, length of chains, and grafted density.  相似文献

This work describes the adsorption behavior of associating and non-associating chains and their mixtures in pores with activated surfaces. The systems are studied using Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo molecular simulations. Fluid molecules are modeled as freely jointed Lennard-Jones chains. Associating chains have, additionally, an associating square-well site placed in an end sphere. The pores are modeled as regular slit pores via an integrated Lennard-Jones potential (10-4-3); activation is achieved by placing specific association sites protruding from the surface. Two different solid-fluid interaction parameters are used, one of which corresponds roughly to alkanes on graphite, the other being a much weaker interaction. Adsorption isotherms are presented for several different cases: associating and non-associating chains confined within both neutral and activated walls. Mixtures of associating and non-associating chains are also considered. The effects of pore size, temperature and chain length are quantified. Selectivities obtained are in the range of those seen in adsorption experiments of alkane-alkanol mixtures.  相似文献

We discuss the thermodynamics of adsorption of fluids in pores when the solid-fluid interactions lead to partial wetting of the pore walls, a situation encountered, for example, in water adsorption in porous carbons. Our discussion is based on calculations for a lattice gas model of a fluid in a slit pore treated via mean field density functional theory (MFDFT). We calculate contact angles for pore walls as a function of solid-fluid interaction parameter, alpha, in the model, using Young's equation and the interfacial tensions calculated in MFDFT. We consider adsorption and desorption in both infinite pores and in finite length pores in contact with the bulk. In the latter case, contact with the bulk can promote evaporation or condensation, thereby dramatically reducing the width of hysteresis loops. We show how the observed behavior changes with alpha. By using a value of alpha that yields a contact angle of about 85 degrees and maintaining the bulk fluid in a supersaturated vapor state on adsorption, we find an adsorption/desorption isotherm qualitatively similar to those for graphitized carbon black where pore condensation occurs at supersaturated bulk vapor states in the spaces between the primary particles of the adsorbent.  相似文献

We propose a density functional theory to describe adsorption of Lennard-Jones fluid in slitlike pores modified by chain molecules. Specifically, the chains are bonded by their ends to the opposite pore walls, so they can form pillaredlike structure. Two models are studied. In the first model, the nonterminating segments of chains can change their configuration inside the pore upon adsorption of spherical species. In the second model, the chains configuration remains fixed, so that the system is similar to a nonuniform quenched-annealed mixture. We study capillary condensation of fluid species inside such modified pores and compare the results obtained for two models.  相似文献

We study the adsorption of anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl diphenyloxide disulfonate (SDDD) on three types of polyethylene terephthalate substrates from aqueous solutions of SDDD of different concentrations. Neutral electrolyte (KCl) was added to the solutions to vary the ionic strength. The three types of substrates were: (1) original polymer film, (2) etched non-porous film, which was obtained from pristine film by chemical etching and bears negative charge on the surface, (3) etched porous membranes, which were fabricated from pristine film by ion irradiation and subsequent chemical etching. The membranes have negative charge on the flat surface and on the inner pore walls. The comparison of original and etched nonporous films shows that the negative charge on the flat surface has weak effect on adsorption of the anionic surfactant. The comparison of etched non-porous and porous films shows that the SDDD adsorption on the inner walls of pores is much weaker than on flat surface—even in case the pore radius is significantly larger than the Debye length. This “exclusion” effect strongly depends on ionic strength of solution. For the porous films, the effect of the pore size and shape on the anionic surfactant adsorption is presented and discussed.  相似文献

We developed and employed the incremental gauge cell method to calculate the chemical potential (and thus free energies) of long, flexible homopolymer chains of Lennard-Jones beads with harmonic bonds. The free energy of these chains was calculated with respect to three external conditions: in the zero-density bulk limit, confined in a spherical pore with hard walls, and confined in a spherical pore with attractive pores, the latter case being an analog of adsorption. Using the incremental gauge cell method, we calculated the incremental chemical potential of free polymer chains before and after the globual-random coil transitions. We also found that chains confined in attractive pores exhibit behaviors typical of low temperature physisorption isotherms, such as layering followed by capillary condensation.  相似文献

In these experiments, double-stranded, linear DNA sequences were adsorbed into the pores of spherically shaped acid-prepared mesoporous silica (APMS). The lengths of the sequences were either 760 base pairs or 2000 base pairs. DNA adsorption into the interior of the mesoporous material was confirmed using confocal microscopy of sequences containing fluorescently labeled DNA molecules. Additional characterization with N(2) physisorption and powder X-ray diffraction supported this finding. The extent of adsorption was measured at various concentrations using UV-visible spectrophotometry to establish adsorption isotherms. APMS alone adsorbed a negligible amount of DNA; however, exchanging divalent cations such as Mg(2+) and Ca(2+) into the pores of APMS prior to DNA uptake was found to cause a significant amount of DNA to be adsorbed. Using Na(+) caused a lower amount of DNA to be adsorbed. DNA adsorption was also dependent on the pore diameter of APMS. Adsorption increased upon expansion of the pore size of the metal ion-exchanged material from 34 to 54 A; however, no additional uptake was measured by further increasing the pore size to 100 A. The amount of DNA adsorbed could also be significantly increased by using (aminopropyl)triethoxysilane to covalently link ammonium ions to the surface. Postsynthetic modification of the silica surface with aminopropyl groups increased the maximum DNA adsorption to 15.7 microg/mg silica, for materials with pore diameters of 100 A, which is 2 to 3 times more adsorbed DNA than for metal ion-exchanged material. This indicated that DNA binds more strongly in the presence of the ammonium group compared to the metal counterions. Finally, calculation and comparison of Freundlich and Langmuir constants for these adsorption processes indicate that intermolecular interactions between the DNA molecules within the pores are significant when the effective pore diameter is small, including materials with larger pores that were modified with organosilane.  相似文献

We study adsorption in pores with curved hard walls that are made of two uniaxial cylinders by using a density functional approach. Two cases are considered: adsorption of hard spheres and adsorption of a Lennard-Jones fluid. In the case of hard spheres, we perform a comparison with the results of grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo data. This comparison indicates that the applied approach is capable of reproducing the fluid structure quite satisfactorily. For hard spheres, we also make a comparison of the total adsorption effect (expressed as the average density of a confined fluid) inside pores with curved walls with that evaluated for a slitlike pore. We have found that the differences between adsorption in pores with curved walls and in slits with the same wall-to-wall distance are quite low. The calculations for the Lennard-Jones fluid have been concerned with the investigation of the capillary evaporation and with the evaluation of phase diagrams for different pores, including slitlike pores. We have found that the curvature of the pore walls shifts the transition toward lower values of the chemical potential and increases slightly the value of the critical temperature in comparison with the values obtained for a slitlike pore. Porous carbon membranes were favorably fabricated through the pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile(PAN) precursors, which were prepared with a template-free technique-thermally induced phase separation. These carbon membranes possess hierarchical pores, including cellular macropores across the whole membranes and much small pores in the matrix as well as on the pore walls. Nitrogen adsorption indicates micropores(1.47 and 1.84 nm) and mesopores(2.21 nm) exist inside the carbon membranes, resulting in their specific surface area as large as 1062 m2/g. The carbon membranes were used to adsorb organic dyes(methyl orange, Congo red, and rhodamine B) from aqueous solutions based on their advantages of hierarchical pore structures and large specific surface area. It is particularly noteworthy that the membranes present a selective adsorption towards methyl orange, whose molecular size(1.2 nm) is smaller than those of Congo red(2.3 nm) and rhodamine B(1.8 nm). This attractive result can be attributed to the steric structure matching between the molecular size and the pore size, rather than electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, the used carbon membranes can be easily regenerated by hydrochloric acid, and their recovery adsorption ratio maintains above 90% even in the third cycle. This work may provide a new route for carbon-based adsorbents with hierarchical pores via a template-free approach, which could be promisingly applied to selectively remove dye contaminants in aqueous effluents.  相似文献

SBA‐15 materials of different pore lengths and functionalized with various organic groups were synthesized by one‐pot co‐condensation and applied as adsorbents for the acid orange 12 (AO12) and acid red 73 (AR73) dyes. The materials were characterized by techniques such as X‐ray powder diffraction, nitrogen sorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The adsorption behaviors of the SBA‐15 materials toward AO12 and AR73 dyes were investigated by varying several factors including morphologies of adsorbents, pH of solution, functional groups on SBA‐15, and temperature. The equilibrium adsorption data agreed with Langmuir isotherms. The kinetic parameters were also calculated and the first‐order kinetic model fitted well for amino‐functionalized SBA‐15 material. The short channeling pores of the amino‐functionalized SBA‐15 platelets facilitated the diffusion of dye molecules inside the pores and prevented the aggregation of dye molecules from the blocking of the pores. To conclude, however, the adsorption capacity is dependent on the amount of amino‐loading and surface area of the SBA‐15 materials.  相似文献

Structural characteristics of synthesized ordered mesoporous silicas MCM-41, MCM-48 and SBA-15 were studied using XRD, nitrogen adsorption and FTIR methods. Pure water and mixtures with water/benzene and water/chloroform-d adsorbed onto silicas were studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy with layer-by-layer freezing-out of bulk and interfacial liquids. Concentrated aqueous suspensions of MCM-48 and SBA-15 were studied by thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) method. Benzene and chloroform-d can displace a portion of water to broad pores from the pore walls and from narrower pores, especially in the case of a large excess of an organic solvent. This process is accompanied by diminution of both interaction energy of water with an adsorbent surface and freezing temperature depression of adsorbed water. The effect of nonpolar benzene on pore water is much stronger than that of weakly polar chloroform-d. Modifications of the Gibbs-Thomson relation to describe the freezing point depression of mixtures of immiscible liquids confined in pores allow us to determine distribution functions of sizes of structures with unfrozen pore water and benzene. The adsorption of cationic gemini dodecanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium) bromide (i.e., C12C12C12) from aqueous solution onto aluminosilicate powders of the MCM-41 type (referred to as SiAl32dx, where x is the mean pore diameter in A) has been studied at 298 K under the conditions of free pH of the aqueous phase. Macroporous silica gel XO15M was used for comparative purposes. The discussion was based on the interpretation of experimental adsorption isotherms and differential enthalpies of displacement obtained on various solid samples. For the hydrogen-exchanged SiAl32d28 sample (i.e., H+-SiAl32d28), the adsorption of bromide counterions Br- at the solid-solution interface, the isotherm of the pH evolution in the equilibrated supernatant liquid, and the electrophoretic mobility of the solid particles coated with the adsorbed C12C12C12 were additionally measured. The uptake of phenol (PhOH) by a surfactant-solid system from a 1.5 mmolkg(-1) PhOH solution and the related thermal effect of displacement onto SiAl32d50 were quantified with the use of the solution depletion technique combined with UV spectrophotometry and the titration calorimetry technique. Titration calorimetry was also used to determine the molar enthalpy change accompanying micellization of C12C12C12 in pure deionized water and in a 1.5 mmolkg(-1) PhOH solution at 298 K. The adsorption of C12C12C12 occurs simultaneously on the external surface and on the pore walls and it is a strongly co-operative phenomenon. Surfactant aggregates forming at adsorption saturation are thought to be composed of the adsorbed surfactant units having their cationic head groups mostly oriented outward with respect to the solid surface. Therefore, they can provide co-adsorption sites for polarisable phenol molecules. On average, there is one phenol molecule retained for one gemini cation adsorbed. Transfer of phenol from the aqueous phase to either the bulk micelles or to the interfacial aggregates is enthalpically favourable.  相似文献

Density functional theory was used to perform quantum-chemical calculations of changes in the energy and structure characteristics of methanol and ethanol molecules caused by their adsorption in model slitlike pores of activated carbon. The conclusion was made that changes in these characteristics (bond lengths, angles, charges on atoms, and harmonic vibration frequencies) is additional evidence of the validity of the Tolmachev thermodynamic model, in which adsorption is treated as a quasi-chemical reaction of the addition of adsorbate molecules to adsorption centers of an adsorbent. It was shown that the arrangement of alcohol molecules, when the C-O and C-C bonds were approximately parallel to pore walls and the hydrogen atom was directed toward a nearer pore wall, was most favorable energetically. Two adsorbed alcohol molecules are also arranged parallel to pore walls and form a hydrogen bond.  相似文献

An experimental study on the interplay of sorbent structure and fluid phase conditions (pH) has been carried out examining adsorption and transport of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and a monoclonal antibody (IgG 2a) on SP Sepharose Fast Flow and SP Sepharose XL. SP Sepharose Fast Flow is characterised by a relatively open pore network, while SP Sepharose XL is a composite structure with ligand-carrying dextran chains filling the pore space. Both adsorbents have similar ionic capacity. Protein transport and adsorption profiles were evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Under all investigated conditions, BSA uptake could be adequately explained by a pore diffusion mechanism. The adsorption profiles obtained for IgG 2a, however, indicated that changes in fluid phase conditions as well as a change in the solid phase structure could result in a more complex uptake mechanism as compared to pore diffusion alone. This mechanism results in a fast transport of proteins into the adsorbent, followed by an overshoot of protein in the center of the sorbent and a setback towards a homogeneous adsorption profile.  相似文献

Three highly porous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with a uniform rht‐type topological network but hierarchical pores were successfully constructed by the assembly of triazole‐containing dendritic hexacarboxylate ligands with ZnII ions. These transparent MOF crystals present gradually increasing pore sizes upon extension of the length of the organic backbone, as clearly identified by structural analysis and gas‐adsorption experiments. The inherent accessibility of the pores to large molecules endows these materials with unique properties for the uptake of large guest molecules. The visible selective adsorption of dye molecules makes these MOFs highly promising porous materials for pore‐size‐dependent large‐molecule capture and separation.  相似文献

We have studied the adsorption of end-attaching block copolymer chains inside the cylindrical pores of nanoporous alumina. Highly asymmetric PS-PEO block copolymers, with a small PEO anchoring block and a long PS dangling block, were allowed to adsorb onto porous alumina substrates with an average pore diameter of ∼200 nm from toluene solution. The adsorption process was monitored using FTIR spectroscopy, whereas depth profile analysis was performed by means of XPS and Ar+ ion sputtering. It is found that the PS-PEO adsorption kinetics in porous alumina are ∼4 orders of magnitude slower than the corresponding case of a flat alumina substrate. It appears that chains adsorbed near the pore entrance early on tend to form a barrier for chains entering the pore at later times, thereby slowing down the adsorption process significantly. This effect is much more pronounced for large chains whose dimensions are comparable with the pore diameter. The equilibrium adsorbance value is also affected by chain size due to the additional entropic penalty associated with chain confinement, the adsorbance falling substantially when the chain dimensions become comparable with the pore diameter. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. It is a common approximation in the modeling of adsorption in microporous carbons to treat the pores as slit pores, whose walls are considered to consist of an infinite number of graphitic layers. In practice, such an approximation is appropriate as long as the number of graphitic layers in the wall is greater than three. However, it is understood that pore walls in microporous carbons commonly consist of three or fewer layers. As well as affecting the solid--fluid interaction within a pore, such narrow walls permit the interaction of fluid molecules through the wall, with consequences for the adsorption characteristics. We consider the effect that a distributed pore-wall thickness model can have on transport properties. At low density we find that the only significant deviation in the transport properties from the infinite pore-wall thickness model occurs in pores with single-layer walls. For a model of activated carbons with a distribution of pore widths and pore-wall thicknesses, the transport properties are generally insensitive to the effects of finite walls, in terms of both the solid-fluid interaction within a pore and fluid-fluid interaction through the pore walls.

The distribution of SO(3)H-functional groups attached to the ordered inner pore walls of mesoporous Si-MCM-41 materials based on SiO(2) was investigated by gas adsorption combined with in situ small angle neutron scattering (SANS). The functionalization was performed by two different methods, (i) grafting and (ii) co-condensation. The adsorbates N(2) at 77 K or a H(2)O/D(2)O mixture of 42:58 at 298 K possess neutron scattering length densities (SLD) similar to that of SiO(2) and therefore quench the diffraction signals of the nonmodified silica. SANS measurements show that N(2) matches completely not only with the pristine mesoporous Si-MCM-41 but also with Si-MCM-41-SO(3)H functionalized by grafting. Thus, full access of adsorbate into the entire length of the pores is proven. For the analysis of the distribution of functional groups within the pores in dependence on the used functionalization method, grafting or co-condensation, however, the more specific adsorbate H(2)O/D(2)O (42:58) is necessary, because it reacts more sensitively toward small changes in the SLD of the host material. For grafted Si-MCM-41-SO(3)H materials, an incomplete quenching was observed, indicating that only some regions, probably the pore mouths, have been modified. For a sample functionalized by co-condensation, almost no quenching of the neutron diffraction was found, indicating a very homogeneous distribution of the functional groups along the entire pores.  相似文献

This paper presents a thermodynamic analysis of capillary condensation phenomena in cylindrical pores. Here, we modified the Broekhoff and de Boer (BdB) model for cylindrical pores accounting for the effect of the pore radius on the potential exerted by the pore walls. The new approach incorporates the recently published standard nitrogen and argon adsorption isotherm on nonporous silica LiChrospher Si-1000. The developed model is tested against the nonlocal density functional theory (NLDFT), and the criterion for this comparison is the condensation/evaporation pressure versus the pore diameter. The quantitative agreement between the NLDFT and the refined version of the BdB theory is ascertained for pores larger than 2 nm. The modified BdB theory was applied to the experimental adsorption branch of adsorption isotherms of a number of MCM-41 samples to determine their pore size distributions (PSDs). It was found that the PSDs determined with the new BdB approach coincide with those determined with the NLDFT (also using the experimental adsorption branch). As opposed to the NLDFT, the modified BdB theory is very simple in its utilization and therefore can be used as a convenient tool to obtain PSDs of all mesoporous solids from the analysis of the adsorption branch of adsorption isotherms of any subcritical fluids.  相似文献
