We numerically investigate the conical emission (CE) from ultrashort laser filaments, both considering and disregarding the higher-order Kerr effect (HOKE). While the consideration of HOKE has almost no influence on the predicted CE from collimated beams, differences arise for tightly focused beams. This difference is attributed to the different relative contributions of the nonlinear focus and of the modulational instability over the whole filament length.  相似文献

The recent measurement of negative higher-order Kerr effect (HOKE) terms in gases has given rise to a controversial debate, fed by its impact on short laser pulse propagation. By comparing the experimentally measured yield of the third and fifth harmonics, with both an analytical and a full comprehensive numerical propagation model, we confirm the absolute and relative values of the reported HOKE indices.  相似文献

The modes of the comb spectrum of a Kerr-lens mode-locked laser are frequency shifted versus the corresponding cw modes of the cavity by an intensity-induced change in the index of refraction in the Kerr medium. Nonlinear Kerr effect leads to the appearance of a periodic structure in the saturated refractive index of an optical fiber, which corresponds to a standing structure formed by counterpropagating waves in the circuit of a fiber ring interferometer (FRI). If the intensities of counterpropagating waves are slightly different, their reflection from this periodic structure leads to the appearance of a phase shift of interference of counterpropagating waves unrelated to rotation at the FRI output. If a nonmonochromatic radiation source is used in the FRI system, only radiation rereflected from the middle of the circuit makes a contribution to the phase shift. A method for eliminating the influence of the nonlinear Kerr effect on the zero shift of fiber ring interferometers is proposed. This consists in making the middle of the circuit discontinuous. The LIGO/Virgo detections of binary black hole mergers marked a watershed moment in astronomy, ushering in the era of precision tests of Kerr dynamics. We review theoretical and experimental challenges that must be overcome to carry out black hole spectroscopy with present and future gravitational wave detectors. Among other topics, we discuss quasinormal mode excitation in binary mergers, astrophysical event rates, tests of black hole dynamics in modified theories of gravity, parameterized “post-Kerr” ringdown tests, exotic compact objects, and proposed data analysis methods to improve spectroscopic tests of Kerr dynamics by stacking multiple events.  相似文献

By introducing the nonlinear effects that arise from Kerr medium, we theoretically study the nonlinear effect and the entanglement between two atoms in two coupled cavities. We give out the process of dynamic stability and solve the eigen problem of the system under high-intensive fields. The dynamics of the two coupled cavity with high-intensity fields inside is also studied numerically, the effects of atom-field coupling on the self-trapping as well as on the entanglement are also analyzed and discussed. In vacuum and high-intensity fields we calculate the concurrence of the two atoms in both theoretical and realistic situation, and discuss the nonlinear effect on the atomic entanglement. The result shows that the nonlinear interaction can play a controlling role in entangling two atoms.  相似文献

We investigated the spatiotemporal modulation instability (MI) in a medium with a non-instantaneous Kerr response in which the nonlinear contribution to the refractive index is governed by a relaxing Debye type equation. The expression for the MI gain spectrum in non-instantaneous Kerr medium is obtained, which clearly reveals the influence of the finite time of the nonlinear response (relaxation effect) on the spatiotemporal MI. It is shown that, due to the relaxation effect, the spatiotemporal MI can appear for the case of anomalous dispersion and defocusing nonlinearity, while it cannot appear in instantaneous Kerr medium for the same case, and a new MI gain spectrum appears, adding to the conventional MI gain spectrum similar to that in an instantaneous Ker medium. In addition, the bandwidth of MI gain spectrum is extended and the maximum MI gain is reduced with increasing of the relaxation time. Interestingly, spatiotemporal MI can appear for any spatial frequencies in non-instantaneous Kerr medium for any combination of dispersion and nonlinearity. We have performed an experiment of MI in carbon disulfide (CS2), a typical non-instantaneous Kerr medium, which shows quantitative agreement with the theoretical analyses.  相似文献

The Kerr and the electrostrictive contributions to the intensity-dependent nonlinear refractive index in optical fibers are discussed on both theoretical and experimental bases. Particular attention is devoted to the electrostrictive contribution that under particular conditions is enhanced by resonances. The resonant behavior of the electrostrictive effect is calculated, measured, and discussed for standard single-mode fibers and dispersion shifted fibers. Experimental results are also reported. Measure ments have been carried out with a simple and effective technique based on the cross-phase modulation effect that also allows one to evaluate the nonlinear refractive index at any bit rate. Electrostriction contributes 20 % to the total nonlinear refractive index but in the resonant regime becomes comparable to the Kerr effect.  相似文献

We study, both experimentally and numerically, the variations of the refractive index at the filamentation of a femtosecond laser pulse in a fused silica. Using the polarigraphy and shadowgraphy techniques, we investigate the spatio-temporal variations of the refractive index induced by Kerr and plasma nonlinearities. The induced variations of the refractive index play the role of dynamic lenses: focusing for Kerr nonlinearity and defocusing for plasma nonlinearity. We show that intensity saturation occurs at the distance, where the total optical force of Kerr and plasma nonlinear lenses reaches its maximum.  相似文献

The entanglement dynamics of system, where atoms A and B interact with single mode cavity fields a and b respectively, is studied. The interaction between atom A and cavity a may be described by using the typical Jaynes Cummings model, while that between the atom B and cavity b filled with a Kerr medium is of a two-photon process. For a certain initial atom entanglement state, there is an entanglement sudden death effect between the two atoms. The Kerr medium in the cavity b can effectively prevent the undesirable entanglement sudden death from occurring. Also, from the viewpoint of the population dynamics, we discuss why the Kerr medium can do so.  相似文献

We investigate nonparaxial spatial solitons in uniaxial media with a cubic nonlinearity, accounting for the fully vectorial electromagnetic perturbation and the longitudinal field component in the self-induced index well. 光子自旋霍尔效应类似于电子系统中的电子自旋霍尔效应, 是在折射率梯度和光子分别扮演的外场和自旋电子的角色下, 由自旋-轨道相互作用而产生的光子自旋分裂现象. 光子自旋霍尔效应为操控光子提供了新的途径, 同时也提供了一种精确测量相关物理效应的方法. 本文研究了磁光克尔效应中光子自旋分裂现象, 建立了磁光克尔旋转与光子自旋霍尔效应之间的定量关系, 并通过弱测量系统观测了磁场作用下铁膜表面的光子自旋分裂位移, 得到相应的磁光旋转角, 验证了我们所推导的理论预测. 本文的研究成果为精确测量磁光克尔系数和磁光克尔旋转角提供了一种新方法.  相似文献

After having reported preliminary results related to saturation, we first theoretically consider the various mechanisms contributing to the resonant optical Kerr effect in Cd(S, Se)-doped glasses. We obtain the expression for the expected effective susceptibility in different possible cases. This nonlinearity is studied experimentally using optical-phase conjugation in the low-intensity regime. We show that, by time resolving the nonlinear response of such glasses having experienced various degrees of photodarkening, we can clearly assess the origin of the resonant optical Kerr effect in these materials. Usually, a combination of a fast free-carrier contribution due to particles without traps and of a slow trapped-carrier one due to particles with traps is observed. For the free-carrier contribution, induced absorption is observed to be almost as important as absorption saturation. We also report frequency-dependent measurements and discuss the change in absorption spectrum and the increase of the nonradiative decay rate that accompany darkening.  相似文献

A theoretical investigation is carried out into the effect of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on Kerr nonlinearity of a four-level N-type system. It’s found that the Kerr nonlinearity can be obviously enhanced with SGC present. We attribute the enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity mainly to the generation of extra coherences induced by the superposition of the two SGC channels, and when the superposition is controlled by the interference between two SGC channels properly, the maximal Kerr nonlinearity does not only enter the electromagnetically induced transparency window as the spontaneous generated coherences intensify, but also gets enhanced about 10 times with very large SGC coefficients than that with no SGC effect.  相似文献

We show that the nonlinear Kerr effect reveals sensitively the geometrical and magnetic structure of surfaces and interfaces. We present calculations of the film-thickness dependent nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr spectra for thin bcc Fe films within a slab geometry using the spin-polarized full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method. Our results show clearly that the nonlinear Kerr spectra of thin films are characteristicaly different from those at surfaces of bulk materials and moreover reflect more sensitively film features such as magnetic moments and substrate effects than linear spectra which are also calculated. In the case of linear Kerr spectra of Au/Fe(bcc)/Au(001) films our theoretical results are in good agreement with observed frequency- and thickness-dependent spectra.  相似文献

This is the first in a series of papers analyzing the inner structure of a generic rotating black hole. The black hole is assumed to evolve from the gravitational collapse of an isolated rotating object in an empty asymptotically-flat universe. This paper covers the first stages of the evolution: from the gravitational collapse and the formation of a black hole, up to the stage where the black hole settles down to Kerr. We shall discuss the generalization of Price's analysis (regarding the latetime asymptotic decay of perturbations outside the black hole) from Schwarzschild to Kerr, and present preliminary results. We then consider these external small perturbations as initial data for the evolution of perturbations inside the black hole. We demonstrate that an important region inside the black hole, which we call the late-time region (and which extends up to the inner horizon) experiences (arbitrarily) small initial perturbations. This, we argue, justifies the attempt to apply the small-perturbation approach to the black hole's interior. We discuss the physical significance of this late-time region. We shall also outline the strategy we use for evolving the perturbations from the event horizon to the inner horizon.  相似文献
