The target space theory of the N = (2,1) heterotic string may be interpreted as a theory of gravity coupled to matter in either 1 + 1 or 2 + 1 dimensions. Among the target space theories in 1 + 1 dimensions are the bosonic, type II, and heterotic string world-sheet field theories in a physical gauge. The (2 + 1)-dimensional version describes a consistent quantum theory of supermembranes in 10 + 1 dimensions. The unifying framework for all of these vacua is a theory of (2 + 2)-dimensional self-dual geometries embedded in 10 + 2 dimensions. There are also indications that the N = (2,1) string describes the strong-coupling dynamics of compactifications of critical string theories to two dimensions, and may lead to insights about the fundamental degrees of freedom of the theory.  相似文献

We construct gauged N = 8 supergravity theories in five dimensions. Instead of the twenty-seven vector fields of the ungauged theory, the gauged theories contain fifteen vector fields and twelve second-rank antisymmetric tensor fields satisfying self-dual field equations. The fifteen vector fields can be used to gauge any of the fifteen-dimensional semisimple subgroups of SL(6,R), specially SO(p, 6?p) for p = 0, 1, 2, 3. The gauged theories also have a physical global SU(1,1) symmetry which survives from the E6(6) symmetry of the ungauged theory. This SU(1,1) for the SO(6) gauging is presumably related to that of the chiral N = 2 theory in ten dimensions. In our formalism we maintain a composite local USp(8) symmetry analogous to SU(8) in four dimensions.  相似文献

It is shown that in certain parity-violating theories in 4k+2 dimensions, general covariance is spoiled by anomalies at the one-loop level. This occurs when Weyl fermions of spin-12or-32 or self-dual antisymmetric tensor fields are coupled to gravity. (For Dirac fermions there is no trouble.) The conditions for anomaly cancellation between fields of different spin is investigated. In six dimensions this occurs in certain theories with a fairly elaborate field content. In ten dimensions there is a unique theory with anomaly cancellation between fields of different spin. It is the chiral n = 2 supergravity theory, which is the low-energy limit of one of the superstring theories. Beyond ten dimensions there is no way to cancel anomalies between fields of different spin.  相似文献

By considering constraints on the dimensions of the Lie algebra corresponding to the weight 1-states of Z2 and Z3 orbifold models arising from imposing the appropriate modular properties on the graded characters of the automorphisms on the underlying conformal field theory, we propose a set of constructions of all but one of the 71 self-dual meromorphic bosonic conformal field theories at central charge 24. In the Z2 case, this leads to an extension of the neighborhood graph of the even self-dual lattices in 24 dimensions to conformal field theories, and we demonstrate that the graph becomes disconnected.  相似文献

We develop a group-theoretical approach to the formulation of generalized abelian gauge theories, such as those appearing in string theory and M-theory. We explore several applications of this approach. First, we show that there is an uncertainty relation which obstructs simultaneous measurement of electric and magnetic flux when torsion fluxes are included. Next, we show how to define the Hilbert space of a self-dual field. The Hilbert space is Z2-graded and we show that, in general, self-dual theories (including the RR fields of string theory) have fermionic sectors. We indicate how rational conformal field theories associated to the two-dimensional Gaussian model generalize to (4k + 2)-dimensional conformal field theories. When our ideas are applied to the RR fields of string theory we learn that it is impossible to measure the K-theory class of a RR field. Only the reduction modulo torsion can be measured.  相似文献

We consider the duality between topologically massive and self-dual nonabelian vector fields in three dimensions. In Fock-Schwinger gauge we obtain an explicit, albeit nonlocal, self-dual action equivalent to the topologically massive action. The inverse construction is performed for a restricted class of modified self-dual actions and leads to a topologically massive theory with two interacting gauge fields.  相似文献

We give generalizations of extended Poincaré supergravity with arbitrarily many supersymmetries in the absence of central charges in three dimensions by gauging its intrinsic global SO(N) symmetry. We call these 0 (Aleph-null) supergravity theories. We further couple a non-Abelian supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory and an Abelian topological BF theory to 0 supergravity. Our result overcomes the previous difficulty for supersymmetrization of Chern-Simons theories beyond N = 4. This feature is peculiar to the Chern-Simons and BF theories including supergravity in three dimensions. We also show that dimensional reduction schemes for four-dimensional theories such as N = 1 self-dual supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory or N = 1 supergravity theory that can generate 0 globally and locally supersymmetric theories in three dimensions. As an interesting application, we present 0 supergravity Liouville theory in two dimensions after appropriate dimensional reduction from three dimensions.  相似文献

It is shown that the Type IIA superstring compactified on K3 has a smooth string soliton with the same zero mode structure as the heterotic string compactified on a four-torus, thus providing new evidence for a conjectured exact duality between the two six-dimensional string theories. The chiral worldsheet bosons arise as zero modes of Ramond-Ramond fields of the IIA string theory and live on a signature (20,4) even, self-dual lattice. Stable, finite loops of soliton string provide the charged Ramond-Ramond states necessary for enhanced gauge symmetries at degeneration points of the K3 surface. It is also shown that Type IIB strings toroidally compactified to six dimensions have a multiplet of string solutions with Type II worldsheets.  相似文献

A new infinite parameter symmetry group is found for real self-dual Yang-Mills theory in four euclidean dimensions. Whereas the gauge potentials transform under a group including local gauge transformations and Kac-Moody-like transformations, the gauge invariant object tr P exp(∮A·dξ) is seen to carry a representation of the Kac-Moody symmetry. Four-dimensional Polyakov loop-space currents restricted to the self-dual sector are constructed from this algebra.  相似文献

An explicit construction of spherically symmetric equations (not only static and/or self-dual) in gauge theories for the minimal embedding of SU(2) in an arbitrary semisimple compact Lie group G is given. The final equations are written in a form containing only gauge invariant quantities in R2. The whole group structure is concentrated in the only matrix, which is directly related to the Cartan matrix of G. In particular, the developed technique allows to generalize the Witten duality equation [1] and to obtain the spectrum of pointlike solutions in G.  相似文献

We give generalizations of extended Poincaré supergravity with arbitrarily many supersymmetries in the absence of central charges in three dimensions by gauging its intrinsic global SO(N) symmetry. We present an action which generates the supersymmetric self-dual equations corresponding to euclidean super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. By adding additional constraint fields with new local symmetries, the classical equations of this system are the usual super self-dual equations when a gauge is chosen for the constraint fields. This construction is a supersymmetric generalization of the Labastida-Pernici action which corresponds to a gauge unfixed version of Witten's topological quantum field theory. We discuss some topological prospects for this model, and the role of supersymmetric instantons in Donaldson theory.  相似文献

We propose a construction of Kähler and non-Kähler Calabi–Yau manifolds by branched double covers of twistor spaces. In this construction we use the twistor spaces of four-manifolds with self-dual conformal structures, with the examples of connected sum of n\({\mathbb{P}^{2}}\)s. We also construct K3-fibered Calabi–Yau manifolds from the branched double covers of the blow-ups of the twistor spaces. These manifolds can be used in heterotic string compactifications to four dimensions. We also construct stable and polystable vector bundles. Some classes of these vector bundles can give rise to supersymmetric grand unified models with three generations of quarks and leptons in four dimensions.  相似文献

We present a new construction of the unitary highest weight representations of the N = 2 superconformal algebras in two dimensions. This construction is based on the non-local current in the ZN conformal theory and a free scalar field. It provides a physical realization of all the unitary N = 2 superconformal field theories by critical systems. The correlation functions of the theories can be calculated through this construction.  相似文献

We propose an integral formulation of the equations of motion of a large class of field theories which leads in a quite natural and direct way to the construction of conservation laws. The approach is based on generalized non-abelian Stokes theorems for p-form connections, and its appropriate mathematical language is that of loop spaces. The equations of motion are written as the equality of a hyper-volume ordered integral to a hyper-surface ordered integral on the border of that hyper-volume. The approach applies to integrable field theories in (1+1) dimensions, Chern-Simons theories in (2+1) dimensions, and non-abelian gauge theories in (2+1) and (3+1) dimensions. The results presented in this paper are relevant for the understanding of global properties of those theories. As a special byproduct we solve a long standing problem in (3+1)-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, namely the construction of conserved charges, valid for any solution, which are invariant under arbitrary gauge transformations.  相似文献

The field of p-adic complex numbers has a much richer structure than the field of ordinary complex numbers. This is used in order to extend the powerful tools of two-dimensional conformal field theories to higher dimensions. It is thus proposed that critical systems in more than two dimensions be first studied over the p-adics and then, if possible, recovered by the adelic construction. It is further argued that this higher-dimensional p-adic analyticity may be the key to membrane theories. A natural ansatz for three-brane tree-scattering amplitudes, where p-adic analyticity is instrumental, is given as an explicit example.  相似文献

Geometrodynamics vs. connection dynamics   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The purpose of this review is to describe in some detail the mathematical relationship between geometrodynamics and connection dynamics in the context of the classical theories of 2+1 and 3+1 gravity. We analyze the standard Einstein-Hilbert theory (in any spacetime dimension), the Palatini and Chern-Simons theories in 2+1 dimensions, and the Palatini and self-dual theories in 3+1 dimensions. We also couple varions matter fields to these theories and briefly describe a pure spin-connection formulation of 3+1 gravity. We derive the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion from an action principle and perform a Legendre transform to obtain a Hamiltonian formulation of each theory. Since constraints are present in all these theories, we construct constraint functions and analyze their Poisson bracket algebra. We demonstrate, whenever possible, equivalences between the theories.  相似文献

We study the Potts models P(N) in 1 + 1 dimensions using a self-dual renormalization-group (RG) approach. The method is very successful in calculating the critical index ν. For N > 4 a pseudocritical behaviour is obtained.  相似文献

The semiclassical approximation to the functional integral for four-dimensional Euclidean gauge theories is discussed in detail for general stationary points of the action. It is shown how to take the limit from a compact space to flat space, and the zero modes corresponding to global gauge transformations are carefully discussed. The results are specialised to general self-dual multi-instanton gauge fields given by the general construction of Atiyah et al. It is shown how the normalization matrix of the zero modes can be determined and the complete expression for the functional measure is given for the two instanton case. This is shown to factorise for well-separated instantons. Some technical matters are discussed in an appendix and a resume of results for multi-instanton functional determinants is included.  相似文献
