Iterative versions of the adaptive implicit–explicit method are presented for the finite element computation of flow problems with particular reference to incompressible flows and advection–diffusion problems. The iterative techniques employed are the grouped element-by-element and generalized minimum residual methods.  相似文献

This paper describes a nonlinear, three‐dimensional spectral collocation method for the simulation of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations under the Boussinesq approximation, motivated by geophysical and environmental flows. These flows are driven by the interaction of stratified fluid with topography, which this model accurately accounts for by using a mapped coordinate system. The spectral collocation method is implemented with both a Fourier trigonometric expansion and the Chebyshev polynomials, as appropriate for the domain boundary conditions. The coordinate mapping prohibits the use of existing, fast solution methods that rely on the separation of variables, so a preconditioner based on the approximate solution of a corresponding finite‐difference problem with geometric multigrid is used. The model is parallelized with the Message Passing Interface library, and it runs effectively on shared and distributed‐memory systems. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes solver that uses a dual time stepping method combined with spatially high‐order‐accurate finite differences, is developed for large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent flows. The present solver uses a primitive variable formulation that is based on the artificial compressibility method and various convergence–acceleration techniques are incorporated to efficiently simulate unsteady flows. A localized dynamic subgrid model, which is formulated using the subgrid kinetic energy, is employed for subgrid turbulence modeling. To evaluate the accuracy and the efficiency of the new solver, a posteriori tests for various turbulent flows are carried out and the resulting turbulence statistics are compared with existing experimental and direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. This paper describes a new approach to discretizing first- and second-order partial differential equations. It combines the advantages of finite elements and finite differences in having both unstructured (triangular/tetrahedral) meshes and low-order physically intuitive schemes. In this ‘co-volume’ framework, the discretized gradient, divergence, curl, (scalar) Laplacian, and vector Laplacian operators satisfy relationships found in standard vector field theory, such as a Helmholtz decomposition. This article focuses on the vorticity–velocity formulation for planar incompressible flows. The algorithm is described and some supporting numerical evidence is provided.  相似文献

This paper describes the implementation and performances of a parallel solver for the direct numerical simulation of the three‐dimensional and time‐dependent Navier–Stokes equations on distributed‐memory, massively parallel computers. The feasibility of this approach to study Marangoni flow instability in half zone liquid bridges is examined. The results indicate that the incompressible, non‐linear Navier–Stokes problem, governing the Marangoni flows behavior, can effectively be parallelized on a distributed memory parallel machine by remapping the distributed data structure. The numerical code is based on a three‐dimensional Simplified Marker and Cell (SMAC) primitive variable method applied to a staggered finite difference grid. Using this method, the problem is split into two problems, one parabolic and the other elliptic A parallel algorithm, explicit in time, is utilized to solve the parabolic equations. A parallel multisplitting kernel is introduced for the solution of the pseudo pressure elliptic equation, representing the most time‐consuming part of the algorithm. A grid‐partition strategy is used in the parallel implementations of both the parabolic equations and the multisplitting elliptic kernel. A Message Passing Interface (MPI) is coded for the boundary conditions; this protocol is portable to different systems supporting this interface for interprocessor communications. Numerical experiments illustrate good numerical properties and parallel efficiency. In particular, good scalability on a large number of processors can be achieved as long as the granularity of the parallel application is not too small. However, increasing the number of processors, the Speed‐Up is ever smaller than the ideal linear Speed‐Up. The communication timings indicate that complex practical calculations, such as the solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations for the numerical simulation of the instability of Marangoni flows, can be expected to run on a massively parallel machine with good efficiency. A vorticity–streamfunction formulation for incompressible planar viscous flows is presented. The standard kinematic field equations are discretized using centred finite difference schemes and solved in a coupled way via a Newton-like linearization scheme. The linearized system of partial differential equations is handled through the restarting linear GMRES algorithm, preconditioned by means of an incomplete LU approximate factorization. The proposed solution technique constitutes a fast and robust algorithm for treating laminar flows at high Reynolds numbers. The pressure field is obtained at a subsequent step by solving a convection– diffusion equation in terms of the stagnation pressure, which presents certain advantages compared with the widely used static pressure Poisson equation. Results are shown for a wide variety of applications including internal and external flows.  相似文献

A collocated discretization of the 3D steady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations based on a flux-difference-splitting formulation is presented. The discretization employs primitive variables of Cartesian velocity components and pressure. The splitting used here is a polynomial splitting introduced by Dick and Linden of Roe type. Second-order accuracy is obtained with the defect correction approach in which the state vector is inter-polated with van Leer's κ-scheme. The underlying solution technique to solve the discretized equations is a parallel multiblock multigrid method. Several 2D and 3D test problems such as driven cavity and channel flows are solved.  相似文献

This paper presents an adaptive finite element method for solving incompressible turbulent flows using a k–ϵ model of turbulence. Solutions are obtained in primitive variables using a highly accurate quadratic finite element on unstructured grids. A projection error estimator is presented that takes into account the relative importance of the errors in velocity, pressure and turbulence variables. The efficiency and convergence rate of the methodology are evaluated by solving problems with known analytical solutions. The method is then applied to turbulent flow over a backward-facing step and predictions are compared with experimental measurements. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper we present a comparative study of three non-linear schemes for solving finite element systems of Navier–Stokes incompressible flows. The first scheme is the classical Newton–Raphson linearization, the second one is the modified Newton–Raphson linearization and the last one is a new scheme called the asymptotic–Newton method. The relative efficiency of these approaches is evaluated over a large number of examples. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical method for simulating turbulent flows via coupling the Boltzmann BGK equation with Spalart–Allmaras one equation turbulence model. Both the Boltzmann BGK equation and the turbulence model equation are carried out using the finite volume method on unstructured meshes, which is different from previous works on structured grid. The application of the gas‐kinetic scheme is extended to the simulation of turbulent flows with arbitrary geometries. The adaptive mesh refinement technique is also adopted to reduce the computational cost and improve the efficiency of meshes. To organize the unstructured mesh data structure efficiently, a non‐manifold hybrid mesh data structure is extended for polygonal cells. Numerical experiments are performed on incompressible flow over a smooth flat plate and compressible turbulent flows around a NACA 0012 airfoil using unstructured hybrid meshes. These numerical results are found to be in good agreement with experimental data and/or other numerical solutions, demonstrating the applicability of the proposed method to simulate both subsonic and transonic turbulent flows. A parallel large eddy simulation code that adopts domain decomposition method has been developed for large‐scale computation of turbulent flows around an arbitrarily shaped body. For the temporal integration of the unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes equation, fractional 4‐step splitting algorithm is adopted, and for the modelling of small eddies in turbulent flows, the Smagorinsky model is used. For the parallelization of the code, METIS and Message Passing Interface Libraries are used, respectively, to partition the computational domain and to communicate data between processors. To validate the parallel architecture and to estimate its performance, a three‐dimensional laminar driven cavity flow inside a cubical enclosure has been solved. To validate the turbulence calculation, the turbulent channel flows at Reτ = 180 and 1050 are simulated and compared with previous results. Then, a backward facing step flow is solved and compared with a DNS result for overall code validation. Finally, the turbulent flow around MIRA model at Re = 2.6 × 106 is simulated by using approximately 6.7 million nodes. Scalability curve obtained from this simulation shows that scalable results are obtained. The calculated drag coefficient agrees better with the experimental result than those previously obtained by using two‐equation turbulence models. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Traditionally, coupled methods have been employed for the computation of compressible flows, whereas segregated methods have been preferred for the computation of incompressible flows. Compared to coupled methods, segregated solvers present the advantage of reduced computer memory and CPU time requirements, although at the cost of an inferior robustness. Therefore, in a series of papers we present unified computational techniques to compute compressible and incompressible flows with segregated stabilized methods. The proposed algorithms have an increased robustness compared to existing techniques, while possessing additional benefits such as employing standard pressure boundary conditions. In this first part, the thermodynamics of isothermal, thermally perfect compressible flows is set up in the framework of symmetric systems and the corresponding segregated algorithms are introduced. This paper presents lattice Boltzmann Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook (LBGK) model and incompressible LBGK model‐based lattice Boltzmann flux solvers (LBFS) for simulation of incompressible flows. LBFS applies the finite volume method to directly discretize the governing differential equations recovered by lattice Boltzmann equations. The fluxes of LBFS at each cell interface are evaluated by local reconstruction of lattice Boltzmann solution. Because LBFS is applied locally at each cell interface independently, it removes the major drawbacks of conventional lattice Boltzmann method such as lattice uniformity, coupling between mesh spacing, and time interval. With LBGK and incompressible LBGK models, LBFS are examined by simulating decaying vortex flow, polar cavity flow, plane Poiseuille flow, Womersley flow, and double shear flows. The obtained numerical results show that both the LBGK and incompressible LBGK‐based LBFS have the second order of accuracy and high computational efficiency on nonuniform grids. Furthermore, LBFS with both LBGK models are also stable for the double shear flows at a high Reynolds number of 105. However, for the pressure‐driven plane Poiseuille flow, when the pressure gradient is increased, the relative error associated with LBGK model grows faster than that associated with incompressible LBGK model. It seems that the incompressible LBGK‐based LBFS is more suitable for simulating incompressible flows with large pressure gradients. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper describes a domain decomposition method for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in general co‐ordinates. Domain decomposition techniques are needed for solving flow problems in complicated geometries while retaining structured grids on each of the subdomains. This is the so‐called block‐structured approach. It enables the use of fast vectorized iterative methods on the subdomains. The Navier–Stokes equations are discretized on a staggered grid using finite volumes. The pressure‐correction technique is used to solve the momentum equations together with incompressibility conditions. Schwarz domain decomposition is used to solve the momentum and pressure equations on the composite domain. Convergence of domain decomposition is accelerated by a GMRES Krylov subspace method. Computations are presented for a variety of flows. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper we are interested in the Quartapelle–Napolitano approach to calculation of forces in viscous incompressible flows in exterior domains. We study the possibility of deriving a simpler formulation of this approach which might lead to a more convenient expression for the hydrodynamic force, but conclude that such a simplification is, within the family of approaches considered, impossible. This shows that the original Quartapelle–Napolitano formula is in fact “optimal” within this class of approaches.  相似文献

Many planetary and astrophysical bodies are rotating rapidly, fluidic and, as a consequence of rapid rotation, in the shape of an ablate spheroid. We present an efficient element‐by‐element (EBE) finite element method for the numerical simulation of nonlinear flows in rotating incompressible fluids that are confined in an ablate spheroidal cavity with arbitrary eccentricity. Our focus is placed on temporal and spatial tetrahedral discretization of the EBE finite element method in spheroidal geometry, the EBE parallelization scheme and the validation of the nonlinear spheroidal code via both the constructed exact nonlinear solution and the special resonant forcing in the inviscid limit. A finite element model to solve the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations based on the stabilization with orthogonal subscales, a predictor–corrector scheme to segregate the pressure and a nodal based implementation is presented in this paper. The stabilization consists of adding a least‐squares form of the component orthogonal to the finite element space of the convective and pressure gradient terms, which allows to deal with convection‐dominated flows and to use equal velocity–pressure interpolation. The pressure segregation is inspired in fractional step schemes, although the converged solution corresponds to that of a monolithic time integration. Finally, the nodal‐based implementation is based on an a priori calculation of the integrals appearing in the formulation and then the construction of the matrix and right‐hand side vector of the final algebraic system to be solved. After appropriate approximations, this matrix and this vector can be constructed directly for each nodal point, without the need to loop over the elements and thus making the calculations much faster. Some issues related to this implementation for fractional step and our predictor–corrector scheme, which is the main contribution of this paper, are discussed. A complementary set of Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations has been developed for steady incompressible, turbulent flows. The method is based on the Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity vector field into a viscous and a potential components. In the complementary RANS solver a potential solution coexists with a viscous solution with the purpose of contributing to a fastest decay of the viscous solution in the far field. The proposed complementary RANS equations have been validated for steady laminar and turbulent flows. The computational results show that the complementary RANS solver is able to produce less grid‐dependent solutions than a conventional RANS solver. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Adaptive mesh techniques are used widely in the numerical simulations of fluid flows, and the simulation results with high accuracies are obtained by appropriate mesh adaptations. However, gas–liquid two‐phase flows are still difficult to be simulated on adaptive meshes, especially on unstructured adaptive meshes, because the physical phenomena near gas–liquid interfaces are highly complicated and in general, not modeled appropriately on adaptive meshes. In this paper, a high‐precision unstructured adaptive mesh technique for gas–liquid two‐phase flows is developed and verified/validated. In the unstructured adaptive mesh technique, the PLIC algorithm is employed to simulate interfacial dynamic behaviors and, therefore, the reconstruction method for the interfaces in refined cells is developed, which satisfies the gas and liquid volume conservations and geometrical conservations of interfaces. In addition, the physics‐based consideration is performed on the momentum calculations near interfaces, and the calculation method with gas and liquid momentum conservations is developed. For verification, the slotted‐disk revolution problem is solved. As a result, the unstructured adaptive mesh technique succeeds in reproducing the slotted‐disk shape accurately and well maintaining the shape after one full‐revolution. The dam‐break problem is also simulated and the momentum conservative calculation method succeeds in providing physically appropriate results, which show good agreements with experimental data. Therefore, it is confirmed that the developed unstructured adaptive mesh technique is very efficient to simulate gas–liquid two‐phase flows accurately.
