The interaction between multiple incompressible air jets has been studied numerically and experimentally. The numerical predictions have been first validated using experimental data for a single jet configuration. The spreading features of five unequal jets in the configuration of one larger central jet surrounded by four smaller equi‐distant jets, have been studied, for different lateral spacing ratios of 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 and a central jet Reynolds number of 1.24×105 (corresponding to a Mach number of 0.16). Flow of five equal jets has also been simulated, for the sake of comparison. The jet interactions commence at an axial distance of about 3–4 diameters and complete by an axial distance of about 10 diameters for the lowest spacing ratio of 1.5. For larger spacing ratios, the length required for the start and completion of jet interaction increase. Peripheral jets bend more towards the central jet and merge at a smaller distance, when their sizes are smaller than that of the central jet. The entrainment ratio for multiple jets is higher than that for a single jet. Excellent agreement is observed between the experimental data and theoretical predictions for both mean flow field and turbulent quantities, at regions away from the jet inlet. The potential core length and initial jet development, however, are not predicted very accurately due to differences in the assumed and actual velocity profiles at the jet inlet. Numerical simulation on micromixer based on synthetic jet   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper studied a concept of micromixer with a synthetic jet placed at the bottom of a rectangular channel. Due to periodic ejections from and suctions into the channel, the fluids are mixed effectively. To study the effects of the inlet velocity, the jet intensity and frequency, and the jet location on the mixing efficiency, 3-D numerical simulations of the micromixer have been carried out. It has been found that when the jet intensity and the frequency are fixed, the mixing efficiency increases when Re 〈 50, and decreases when Re 〉 50 with the best mixing efficiency achieved at Re = 50. When the ratio of the jet velocity magnitude to the inlet velocity is taken as 10 and the jet frequency is 100 Hz, the mixing index reaches the highest value. It has also been found that to get better mixing efficiency, the orifice of the synthetic jet should be asymmetrically located away from the channel's centerline.  相似文献

The conventional approach to analysis the buckling of rectangular laminates containing an embedded delamination subjected to the in-plane loading is to simplify the laminate as a beam-plate from which the predicted buckling load decreases as the length of the laminate increases. Two-dimensional analyses are employed in this paper by extending the one-dimensional model to take into consideration of the influence of the delamination width on the buckling performance of the laminates. The laminate is simply supported containing a through width delamination. A new parameter β defined as the ratio of delamination length to delamination width is introduced with an emphasis on the influence of the delamination size. It is found that (i) when the ratio β is greater than one snap-through buckling prevails, the buckling load is determined by the delamination size and depth only; (ii) as the ratio β continues to increase, the buckling load will approach to a constant value. Solutions are verified with the well established results and are found in good agreement with the latter.  相似文献

Two‐dimensional incompressible jet development inside a duct has been studied in the laminar flow regime, for cases with and without entrainment of ambient fluid. Results have been obtained for the flow structure and critical Reynolds number values for steady asymmetric jet development and for the onset of temporal oscillations, at various values of the duct‐to‐jet width ratio (aspect ratio). It is found that at low aspect ratios and Reynolds numbers, jet development inside the duct is symmetric. For larger aspect ratios and Reynolds numbers, the jet flow at steady state becomes asymmetric with respect to the midplane, and for still higher values, it becomes oscillatory with respect to time. When entrainment is present, the instabilities of asymmetric development and temporal oscillations occur at a much higher critical Reynolds number for a given aspect ratio, indicating that the stability of the jet flow is higher with entrainment. A combined experimental and numerical investigation of flow control actuation in a short, rectangular, diffusing S-shape inlet duct using a two-dimensional tangential control jet was conducted. Experimental and numerical techniques were used in conjunction as complementary techniques, which are utilized to better understand the complex flow field. The compact inlet had a length-to-hydraulic diameter ratio of 1.5 and was investigated at a free-stream Mach number of 0.44. In contrast to the baseline flow, where the flow field was fully separated, the two-dimensional control jet was able to eliminate flow separation at the mid-span portion of the duct and changed considerably the three-dimensional flow field, and ultimately, the inlet performance. A comparison between the baseline (no actuation) and forced flow fields showed that secondary flow structures dominated both flow fields, which is inevitably associated with total pressure loss. Contrary to the baseline case, the secondary flow structures in the forced case were established from the core flow stagnating on the lower surface of the duct close to the aerodynamic interface plane. High fidelity spectral analysis of the experimental results at the inlet’s exit plane showed that the baseline flow field was dominated by pressure fluctuations corresponding to a Strouhal number based on hydraulic diameter of 0.26. Not only did the two-dimensional tangential control jet improve the time-averaged pressure recovery at the inlet exit plane (13.3% at the lower half of the aerodynamic interface plane), it essentially eliminated the energy content of the distinct unsteady fluctuations which characterized the baseline flow field. This result has several implications for the design of a realistic engine inlet; furthermore, it depicts that a single non-intrusive static pressure measurement at the surface of the duct can detect flow separation.  相似文献

In this research, the fluid and thermal characteristics of a rectangular turbulent jet flow is studied numerically. The results of three-dimensional jet issued from a rectangular nozzle are presented. A numerical method employing control volume approach with collocated grid arrangement was employed. Velocity and pressure fields are coupled with SIMPLEC algorithm. The turbulent stresses are approximated using k–e{\varepsilon} model with two different inlet conditions. The velocity and temperature fields are presented and the rates of their decay at the jet centerline are noted. The velocity vectors of the main flow and the secondary flow are illustrated. Also, effect of aspect ratio on mixing in rectangular cross-section jets is considered. The aspect ratios that were considered for this work were 1:1 to 1:4. The results showed that the jet entrains more with smaller AR. Special attention has been drawn to the influence of the Reynolds number (based on hydraulic diameter) as well as the inflow conditions on the evolution of the rectangular jet. An influence on the jet evolution is found for smaller Re, but the jet is close to a converged state for higher Reynolds numbers. The inflow conditions have considerable influence on the jet characteristics.  相似文献

This paper describes a vortex detection algorithm used to expose and statistically characterize the coherent flow patterns observable in the velocity vector fields measured by particle image velocimetry in the impingement region of air curtains. The philosophy and the architecture of this algorithm are presented. Its strengths and weaknesses are discussed. The results of a parametrical analysis performed to assess the variability of the response of our algorithm to the three user-specified parameters in our eduction scheme are reviewed. The technique is illustrated in the case of a plane turbulent impinging twin-jet with an opening ratio of 10. The corresponding jet Reynolds number, based on the initial mean flow velocity U 0 and the jet width e, is 14,000. The results of a statistical analysis of the size, shape, spatial distribution and energetic content of the coherent eddy structures detected in the impingement region of this test flow are provided. Although many questions remain open, new insights into the way these structures might form, organise and evolve are given. Relevant results provide an original picture of the plane turbulent impinging jet.  相似文献

The paper presents numerical investigations of square jets in a wide range of Reynolds numbers with varying inlet turbulence characteristics. The research focuses on flow characteristics depending on inflow turbulent length/time scales and excitation frequencies in case of excited jets. It is found that the parameters of inlet turbulence affect the solutions qualitatively when the Reynolds number is sufficiently low. In these cases the impact of varying the turbulent time scale is considerably larger than changing the turbulent length scale. It was also observed that at sufficiently high Reynolds numbers the jets become quite independent of the inlet turbulence characteristics. This confirms findings of Xu et al. (Phys. Fluids, 2013) concerning weak/strong dependence of the jet evolution on inflow conditions. In case of excited jets the excitation frequencies play an important role and influence the jet behaviour most strongly at lower values of the Reynolds number. For some forcing frequencies a bifurcation occurs at sufficiently large forcing amplitudes. This phenomenon turned out to be independent of the assumed length and time scales of the turbulent fluctuations, both in terms of robustness as well as amplitude.  相似文献

A single stage model turbine has been provided with a set of three special inlet sections which include backward facing steps to produce casing separations of varying size upstream of the stator blades. In addition each inlet section is equipped so as tc be able to emit a swirling jet which simulates the tip leakage jet from a preceeding stage. It is demonstrated that there is a substantial efficiency penalty associated with the stepped casing and its attendant separation and that a small mitigation is brought about by the tip leakage jet, by re-energising the fluid in the separation zone  相似文献

A comprehensive analysis is presented of the internal flow structures that can arise in the coating bead of a twin roll coater, operating in forward mode, as inlet flux is varied seamlessly from a starved to a flooded condition. This is accomplished via the application of lubrication theory combined with the acquisition of accurate finite element solutions of the full two free surface flow problem. The former is used to map out associated control-space diagrams in terms of the non-dimensional quantities, roll speed ratio, inlet flux and Capillary number, and, further, to predict the distribution of eddies and liquid transfer paths as a function of the main operating parameters. The dynamic contact angle is predicted as a function of the operating conditions for both the computations and analysis. Detailed results are presented which: (i) provide a complete picture of attendant eddy structures; (ii) quantify the strengths of primary, secondary and asymmetric liquid transfer jets; (iii) reveal the presence of a weak secondary asymmetric transfer jet in the intermediate to flooded inlet flow regime; (iv) describe stagnation and free surface locations as a function of inlet flux and Capillary number; (v) demonstrate the unexpected coexistence of the primary and asymmetric jets in the low speed ratio meniscus regime.  相似文献

This paper describes an experimental study of the removal of fine (12 μm) polystyrene particles from a glass substrate, using a gas jet that impinges obliquely onto a particle-laden surface. In order to avoid transient affects associated with jet start-up, the sample was slowly translated under a steady jet. The translating gas jet produces a long, clean path that provides very good statistics for exploring the effect of jet parameters. This study focuses on the dependence of the spatial distribution of removal on the jet pressure ratio and impingement angle. The jet is translated over the sample both longitudinally and transversely to determine both the width and the length of the particle removal footprint. The width of the removal footprint increases and the length decreases as the impingement angle is increased. Previous researchers have reported seemingly contradictory results regarding the dependence of removal efficiency on impingement angle; this paper seeks to resolve these differences. For the steady jet, the threshold jet pressure ratio required for 50% particle removal increases with decreasing impingement angle. In addition, studies of the entrainment of well-characterized particles from well-characterized substrates provide insight into the surface shear stress imposed by the oblique jet. Self-sustained oscillatory phenomena in confined flow may occur when a turbulent plane jet is discharging into a rectangular cavity. An experimental set-up was developed and the flow analysis has been made using mainly hot-wire measurements, which were complemented by visualisation data. Previous studies confirmed that periodic oscillations may occur, depending on the location of the jet exit nozzle inside the cavity, and also the distance between the side-walls. The present study deals with the symmetrical interaction between a turbulent plane jet and a rectangular cavity and the influence of the geometrical characteristics of the cavity on the oscillatory motion. The size and aspect ratio of the cavity were varied together with the jet width compared to that of the cavity. The study is carried out both numerically and experimentally. The numerical method solves the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations (URANS) together with the continuity equation for an incompressible fluid. The closure of the flow equations system is achieved using a two-scale energy-flux model at high Reynolds number in the core flow coupled with a wall function treatment in the vicinity of the wall boundaries. The fundamental frequency of the oscillatory flow was found to be practically independent of the cavity length. Moreover, the oscillations are attenuated as the cavity width increases, until they disappear for a critical value of the cavity width. Contour maps of the instantaneous flow field are drawn to show the flow pattern evolution at the main phases of oscillation. They are given for several aspect ratios of the cavity, keeping constant values for the cavity width and the jet thickness. The proposed approach may help to investigate further the oscillation mechanisms and the entrainment process occurring in pressure driven jet–cavity interactions.  相似文献

This study investigates the experimentally observed hysteresis in the mean flow field of an annular swirling jet with a stepped‐conical nozzle. The flow is simulated using the Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) approach for incompressible flow with a k–ε and a Reynolds stress transport (RSTM) turbulence model. Four different flow structures are observed depending on the swirl number: ‘closed jet flow’, ‘open jet flow low swirl’, ‘open jet flow high swirl’ and ‘coanda jet flow’. These flow patterns change with varying swirl number and hysteresis at low and intermediate swirl numbers is revealed when increasing and subsequently decreasing the swirl. The influence of the inlet velocity profile on the transitional swirl numbers is investigated. When comparing computational fluid dynamics with experiments, the results show that both turbulence models predict the four different flow structures and the associated hysteresis and multiple solutions at low and intermediate swirl numbers. Therefore, a good agreement exists between experiments and numerics. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An experimental study is presented which details the turbulence characteristics of a two dimensional offset jet. A single offset ratio (height of the nozzle above the solid parallel wall by nozzle width) of seven is used with a nozzle Reynolds number of 15,000. Measurements are presented in the preattachment jet region made with a dual frequency shifted laser Doppler anemometer. The relative strain rates resulting from curvature on the upper and lower sides of the jet are determined and their effects on the r. m. s. fluctuating velocity components are presented. This paper was presented at the Ninth Symposium on Turbulence, University of Missouri-Rolla, October 1–3, 1984  相似文献

This letter reports inlet flow disturbance effects on direct numerical simulation of incompressible round jet at Reynolds number 2500.The simulation employs an accurate projection method in which a sixth order biased upwind difference scheme is used for spatial discretization of nonlinear convective terms, with a fourth order central difference scheme used in the discretization of the divergence of intermediate velocity.Carefully identifying reveals that the inlet flow disturbance has some influences on the distribution pattern of mean factor of swirling strength intermittency. With the increase of inlet disturbance magnitude jet core cone slightly shortens, observable differences occur in the centerline velocity and its fluctuations, despite the negligible impacts on the least square fitted centerline velocity decay constant(B_u)and distribution parameter(K_u)for velocity profile in self-similar region.

This paper investigates the flow pattern change in an annular jet caused by a sudden change in the level of inlet swirl. The jet geometry consists of an annular channel followed by a specially designed stepped‐conical nozzle, which allows the existence of four different flow patterns as a function of the inlet swirl number. This paper reports on the transition between two of them, called the ‘open jet flow high swirl’ and the ‘Coanda jet flow.’ It is shown that a small sudden decrease of 4% in inlet swirl results in a drastic and irreversible change in flow pattern. The objective of this paper is to reveal the underlying physical mechanisms in this transition by means of numerical simulations. The flow is simulated using the unsteady Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) approach for incompressible flow with a Reynolds stress turbulence model. The analysis of the numerical results is based on a study of different forces on a control volume, which consists of the jet boundaries. The analysis of these forces shows that the flow pattern change consists of three different regimes: an immediate response regime, a quasi‐static regime and a Coanda regime. The simulation reveals that the pressure–tangential velocity coupling during the quasi‐static regime and the Coanda effect at the nozzle outlet during the Coanda regime are the driving forces behind the flow pattern change. These physical mechanisms are validated with time‐resolved stereo‐PIV measurements, which confirm the numerical simulations. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The rate of heat transfer from a plate due to impinging of an array of jets was investigated. The effect of jet-to-plate spacing in a confined array of impinging laminar square jets was investigated numerically through the solution of Navier Stokes and energy equations. The simulation is carried out for the jet-to-plate spacing between 2 B and 20 B and for jet-to-jet spacing of 4 B, where B is the jet width. Five in-line jets subjected to across-flow were used in this investigation. Also, six different ratios of jet to cross-flow velocity are simulated (0.5, 1.0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10) for the jet Reynolds number of 200. The predicted results show a formation of one or two ground horseshoe vortices between the jets. In addition, a horseshoe vortex forms at different position between the orifice and impinging plates due to the interaction of two jets before they combine. The number of the ground horseshoe vortex and its size are strongly affected by the jet-to-plate spacing and by jet to cross-flow velocity ratio. The effect of jet-to-plate spacing and jet to cross-flow velocity ratio on heat transfer is presented and discussed.  相似文献

Jet pump diffuser performance is analyzed, both in terms of past experimental work dealing with the high inlet flow distortions involved and in the sense that this problem is amenable to predictive investigation by computational fluid dynamics techniques. In these highly nonuniform flow conditions, diffusers are seen to justify their inclusion in a jet pump design, for regaining static pressure downstream of the vacuum chamber, even though their performance in effectiveness terms is lowered by about two thirds at high inlet glow distortion levels. A satisfactory correlation has been found between outlet and inlet conditions and diffuser area ratio, extending well beyond past experimental published results for diffuser geometry and distorted inlet flows.  相似文献
