Let T = (V, E) be a tree whose vertices are properly 2-colored. A bipartite labeling of T is a bijection f: V ← {0, 1, ?, | E |} for which there is a k such that whenever f(u) ≤ k < f(v), then u and v have different colors. The α-size of the tree T is the maximum number of distinct values of the induced edge labels |f(u) - f(v)|, uv ? E, taken over all bipartite labelings f of T. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the α-size of trees. Let α(n) be the smallest α-size among all the trees with n edges. As our main result we prove that 5(n + 1)/7 ≤ α(n) ≤ (5n + 9)/6. A connection with the graceful tree conjecture is established, in that every tree with n edges is shown to have “gracesize” at least 5n/7. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Let C be a longest cycle in the 3‐connected graph G and let H be a component of G ? V(C) such that |V(H)| ≥ 3. We supply estimates of the form |C| ≥ 2d(u) + 2d(v) ? α(4 ≤ α ≤ 8), where u,v are suitably chosen non‐adjacent vertices in G. Also the exceptional classes for α = 6,7,8 are characterized. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory  相似文献

For a graph G = (V,E) and integer p, a p-intersection representation is a family F = {Sx: × E V} of subsets of a set S with the property that |Su ∩ Sν| ≥ p ∩ {u, ν} E E. It is conjectured in [1] that θp(G) ≤ θ (Kn/2,n/2) (1 + o(1)) holds for any graph with n vertices. This is known to be true for p = 1 by [4]. In [1], θ (Kn/2,n/2) ≥ (n2 + (2p− 1n)n)/4p is proved for any n and p. Here, we show that this is asymptotically best possible. Further, we provide a bound on θp(G) for all graphs with bounded degree. In particular, we prove θp(G)O(n1/p) for any graph Gwith the maximum degree bounded by a constant. Finally, we also investigate the value of θp for trees. Improving on an earlier result of M. Jacobson, A. Kézdy, and D. West, (The 2-intersection number of paths and bounded-degree trees, preprint), we show that θ2(T)O(d√n) for any tree T with maximum-degree d and θ2(T)O(n3/4) for any tree on n vertices. We conjecture that our results can be further improved and that θ2(T)O(d√n) as long as Δ(T) ≤ √n. If this conjecture is true, our method gives θ2(T)O(n3/4) for any tree T which would be the best possible. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We consider the following type of problems. Given a graph G = (V, E) and lists L(v) of allowed colors for its vertices vV such that |L(v)| = p for all vV and |L(u) ∩ L(v)| ≤ c for all uvE, is it possible to find a “list coloring,” i.e., a color f(v) ∈ L(v) for each vV, so that f(u) ≠ f(v) for all uvE? We prove that every of maximum degree Δ admits a list coloring for every such list assignment, provided p ≥ . Apart from a multiplicative constant, the result is tight, as lists of length may be necessary. Moreover, for G = Kn (the complete graph on n vertices) and c = 1 (i.e., almost disjoint lists), the smallest value of p is shown to have asymptotics (1 + o(1)) . For planar graphs and c = 1, lists of length 4 suffice. ˜© 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 27: 43–49, 1998  相似文献

For a graph G, let a(G) denote the maximum size of a subset of vertices that induces a forest. Suppose that G is connected with n vertices, e edges, and maximum degree Δ. Our results include: (a) if Δ ≤ 3, and GK4, then a(G) ≥ n ? e/4 ? 1/4 and this is sharp for all permissible e ≡ 3 (mod 4); and (b) if Δ ≥ 3, then a(G) ≥ α(G) + (n ? α(G))/(Δ ? 1)2. Several problems remain open. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 38: 113–123, 2001  相似文献

The average distance μ(G) of a graph G is the average among the distances between all pairs of vertices in G. For n ≥ 2, the average Steiner n-distance μn(G) of a connected graph G is the average Steiner distance over all sets of n vertices in G. It is shown that for a connected weighted graph G, μn(G) ≤ μk(G) + μn+1−k(G) where 2 ≤ kn − 1. The range for the average Steiner n-distance of a connected graph G in terms of n and |V(G)| is established. Moreover, for a tree T and integer k, 2 ≤ kn − 1, it is shown that μn(T) ≤ (n/kk(T) and the range for μn(T) in terms of n and |V(T)| is established. Two efficient algorithms for finding the average Steiner n-distance of a tree are outlined. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A tournament is a digraph, where there is precisely one arc between every pair of distinct vertices. An arc is pancyclic in a digraph D, if it belongs to a cycle of length l, for all 3 ≤ l ≤ |V (D) |. Let p(D) denote the number of pancyclic arcs in a digraph D and let h(D) denote the maximum number of pancyclic arcs belonging to the same Hamilton cycle of D. Note that p(D) ≥ h(D). Moon showed that h(T) ≥ 3 for all strong non‐trivial tournaments, T, and Havet showed that h(T) ≥ 5 for all 2‐strong tournaments T. We will show that if T is a k‐strong tournament, with k ≥ 2, then p(T) ≥ 1/2, nk and h(T) ≥ (k + 5)/2. This solves a conjecture by Havet, stating that there exists a constant αk, such that p(T) ≥ αk n, for all k‐strong tournaments, T, with k ≥ 2. Furthermore, the second results gives support for the conjecture h(T) ≥ 2k + 1, which was also stated by Havet. The previously best‐known bounds when k ≥ 2 were p(T) ≥ 2k + 3 and h(T) ≥ 5. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory  相似文献

Let G = (V, E) be a connected graph. The hamiltonian index h(G) (Hamilton-connected index hc(G)) of G is the least nonnegative integer k for which the iterated line graph L k (G) is hamiltonian (Hamilton-connected). In this paper we show the following. (a) If |V(G)| ≥ k + 1 ≥ 4, then in G k , for any pair of distinct vertices {u, v}, there exists k internally disjoint (u, v)-paths that contains all vertices of G; (b) for a tree Th(T) ≤ hc(T) ≤ h(T) + 1, and for a unicyclic graph G,  h(G) ≤ hc(G) ≤ max{h(G) + 1, k′ + 1}, where k′ is the length of a longest path with all vertices on the cycle such that the two ends of it are of degree at least 3 and all internal vertices are of degree 2; (c) we also characterize the trees and unicyclic graphs G for which hc(G) = h(G) + 1.  相似文献

A Hamiltonian graph G of order n is k-ordered, 2 ≤ kn, if for every sequence v1, v2, …, vk of k distinct vertices of G, there exists a Hamiltonian cycle that encounters v1, v2, …, vk in this order. Define f(k, n) as the smallest integer m for which any graph on n vertices with minimum degree at least m is a k-ordered Hamiltonian graph. In this article, answering a question of Ng and Schultz, we determine f(k, n) if n is sufficiently large in terms of k. Let g(k, n) = − 1. More precisely, we show that f(k, n) = g(k, n) if n ≥ 11k − 3. Furthermore, we show that f(k, n) ≥ g(k, n) for any n ≥ 2k. Finally we show that f(k, n) > g(k, n) if 2kn ≤ 3k − 6. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 32: 17–25, 1999  相似文献

Let Cν(T) denote the “cover time” of the tree T from the vertex v, that is, the expected number of steps before a random walk starting at v hits every vertex of T. Asymptotic lower bounds for Cν(T) (for T a tree on n vertices) have been obtained recently by Kahn, Linial, Nisan and Saks, and by Devroye and Sbihi; here, we obtain the exact lower bound (approximately 2n In n) by showing that Cν(T) is minimized when T is a star and v is one of its leaves. In addition, we show that the time to cover all vertices and then return to the starting point is minimized by a star (beginning at the center) and maximized by a path (beginning at one of the ends).  相似文献

Let G be a graph of order n and k ≥ 0 an integer. It is conjectured in [8] that if for any two vertices u and v of a 2(k + 1)‐connected graph G,d G (u,v) = 2 implies that max{d(u;G), d(v;G)} ≥ (n/2) + 2k, then G has k + 1 edge disjoint Hamilton cycles. This conjecture is true for k = 0, 1 (see cf. [3] and [8]). It will be proved in this paper that the conjecture is true for every integer k ≥ 0. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this paper we discuss a generalization of the familiar concept of an interval graph that arises naturally in scheduling and allocation problems. We define the interval number of a graph G to be the smallest positive integer t for which there exists a function f which assigns to each vertex u of G a subset f(u) of the real line so that f(u) is the union of t closed intervals of the real line, and distinct vertices u and v in G are adjacent if and only if f(u) and f(v)meet. We show that (1) the interval number of a tree is at most two, and (2) the complete bipartite graph Km, n has interval number ?(mn + 1)/(m + n)?.  相似文献

For a positive integer k, a graph G is k-ordered hamiltonian if for every ordered sequence of k vertices there is a hamiltonian cycle that encounters the vertices of the sequence in the given order. It is shown that if G is a graph of order n with 3 ≤ kn/2, and deg(u) + deg(v) ≥ n + (3k − 9)/2 for every pair u, v of nonadjacent vertices of G, then G is k-ordered hamiltonian. Minimum degree conditions are also given for k-ordered hamiltonicity. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 42: 199–210, 2003  相似文献

We obtain the LpLq maximal regularity of the Stokes equations with Robin boundary condition in a bounded domain in ?n (n?2). The Robin condition consists of two conditions: v ? u=0 and αu+β(T(u, p)v – 〈T(u, p)v, vv)=h on the boundary of the domain with α, β?0 and α+β=1, where u and p denote a velocity vector and a pressure, T(u, p) the stress tensor for the Stokes flow and v the unit outer normal to the boundary of the domain. It presents the slip condition when β=1 and non‐slip one when α=1, respectively. The slip condition is appropriate for problems that involve free boundaries. The cycle‐complete graph Ramsey number r(Cm, Kn) is the smallest integer N such that every graph G of order N contains a cycle Cm on m vertices or has independence number α(G) ≥ n. It has been conjectured by Erd?s, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp that r(Cm, Kn) = (m ? 1) (n ? 1) + 1 for all mn ≥ 3 (except r(C3, K3) = 6). This conjecture holds for 3 ≤ n ≤ 5. In this paper we will present a proof for n = 6 and for all n ≥ 7 with mn2 ? 2n. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 44: 251–260, 2003  相似文献

Let G be a graph of order n, and let a and b be integers such that 1 ≤ a < b. We show that G has an [a, b]-factor if δ(G) ≥ a, n ≥ 2a + b + and max {dG(u), dG(v) ≥ for any two nonadjacent vertices u and v in G. This result is best possible, and it is an extension of T. Iida and T. Nishimura's results (T. Iida and T. Nishimura, An Ore-type condition for the existence of k-factors in graphs, Graphs and Combinat. 7 (1991), 353–361; T. Nishimura, A degree condition for the existence of k-factors, J. Graph Theory 16 (1992), 141–151). about the existence of a k-factor. As an immediate consequence, it shows that a conjecture of M. Kano (M. Kano, Some current results and problems on factors of graphs, Proc. 3rd China–USA International Conference on Graph Theory and Its Application, Beijing (1993). about connected [a, b]-factors is incorrect. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A bisection of a graph is a balanced bipartite spanning sub‐graph. Bollobás and Scott conjectured that every graph G has a bisection H such that degH(v) ≥ ?degG(v)/2? for all vertices v. We prove a degree sequence version of this conjecture: given a graphic sequence π, we show that π has a realization G containing a bisection H where degH(v) ≥ ?(degG(v) ? 1)/2? for all vertices v. This bound is very close to best possible. We use this result to provide evidence for a conjecture of Brualdi (Colloq. Int. CNRS, vol. 260, CNRS, Paris) and Busch et al. (2011), that if π and π ? k are graphic sequences, then π has a realization containing k edge‐disjoint 1‐factors. We show that if the minimum entry δ in π is at least n/2 + 2, then π has a realization containing edge‐disjoint 1‐factors. We also give a construction showing the limits of our approach in proving this conjecture. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory  相似文献

A tournament is an orientation of the edges of a complete graph. An arc is pancyclic in a tournament T if it is contained in a cycle of length l, for every 3 ≤ l ≤ |T|. Let p(T) denote the number of pancyclic arcs in a tournament T. In 4 , Moon showed that for every non‐trivial strong tournament T, p(T) ≥ 3. Actually, he proved a somewhat stronger result: for any non‐trivial strong tournament h(T) ≥ 3 where h(T) is the maximum number of pancyclic arcs contained in the same hamiltonian cycle of T. Moreover, Moon characterized the tournaments with h(T) = 3. All these tournaments are not 2‐strong. In this paper, we investigate relationship between the functions p(T) and h(T) and the connectivity of the tournament T. Let pk(n) := min {p(T), T k‐strong tournament of order n} and hk(n) := min{h(T), T k‐strong tournament of order n}. We conjecture that (for k ≥ 2) there exists a constant αk> 0 such that pk(n) ≥ αkn and hk(n) ≥ 2k+1. In this paper, we establish the later conjecture when k = 2. We then characterized the tournaments with h(T) = 4 and those with p(T) = 4. We also prove that for k ≥ 2, pk(n) ≥ 2k+3. At last, we characterize the tournaments having exactly five pancyclic arcs. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 47: 87–110, 2004  相似文献

A geodesic in a graph G is a shortest path between two vertices of G. For a specific function e(n) of n, we define an almost geodesic cycle C in G to be a cycle in which for every two vertices u and v in C, the distance dG(u, v) is at least dC(u, v)?e(n). Let ω(n) be any function tending to infinity with n. We consider a random d‐regular graph on n vertices. We show that almost all pairs of vertices belong to an almost geodesic cycle C with e(n) = logd?1logd?1n+ ω(n) and |C| = 2logd?1n+ O(ω(n)). Along the way, we obtain results on near‐geodesic paths. We also give the limiting distribution of the number of geodesics between two random vertices in this random graph. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. J Graph Theory 66:115‐136, 2011  相似文献

In 1989, Zhu, Li and Deng introduced the definition of implicit degree of a vertex v in a graph G, denoted by id(v). In this paper, we prove that if G is a 2-connected graph of order n such that id(u) + id(v) ≥ n for each pair of nonadjacent vertices u and v in G, then G is pancyclic unless G is bipartite, or else n = 4r, r ≥ 2 and G is isomorphic to F4r .  相似文献
