Two series of vinyl‐terminated side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyethers containing ethylene oxide or glycidyl aromatic carboxylates as spacers were synthesized. The mesogenic cores were 4,4′‐biphenyl or 2,6‐naphthalene moieties. The polymers were synthesized by chemically modifying poly(epichlorohydrin) or poly(epichlorohydrin)‐poly(ethylene oxide) with the corresponding mesogenic carboxylic acids or with mixtures of these acids and the nonmesogenic non‐crosslinkable analogous 4‐biphenyl‐ and 2‐naphthalenecarboxylic acids. In most cases the degree of modification achieved was higher than 90%. The polymers were characterized by chlorine analysis, IR, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies; viscosimetry; size exclusion chromatography; multi‐angle laser light scattering; and thermogravimetric analysis. The liquid‐crystal behavior, shown by most polymers, was examined by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X‐ray diffraction on mechanically oriented samples. The crosslinking of most polymers was done by peroxide‐type initiators that led to liquid‐crystal thermosets or elastomers. The freezing of the mesophase organization on the crosslinked materials was confirmed by POM and X‐ray diffraction. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of two vinyl‐terminated side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyethers containing benzylideneaniline moieties as mesogenic cores was approached in two different ways: by chemically modifying poly(epichlorohydrin) with suitable mesogenic acids or by polymerizing analogous glycidyl ester or glycidyl ether derivatives. In all the conditions tested, the first approach led to materials in which the imine group was hydrolyzed. The second approach led to the desired polymers PG2a and PG2b , but only from the glycidyl ether derivatives and when the initiator was the system that combined polyiminophosphazene base t‐Bu‐P4 and 3,5‐di‐t‐butylphenol. These polymers were chemically characterized by IR and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies. The estimated degrees of polymerization ranged from 30 to 36. The liquid crystalline behavior of the synthesized polymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X‐ray diffraction. Both polymers behave like liquid crystals and exhibited a single mesophase, which was recognized as a smectic C mesophase, probably with a bilayer arrangement, i.e., a smectic C2 mesophase. The crosslinking of both polymers was performed with dicumyl peroxide as initiator, which led to liquid crystalline thermosets. POM and X‐ray diffraction confirmed that the mesophase organization mantained on the crosslinked materials. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1877–1889, 2006  相似文献

A series of epoxy‐terminated liquid crystalline oligomers with different molecular weights having α‐methylstilbene as the mesogenic unit were synthesized and characterized by means of 1H NMR and FT‐IR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized‐light optical microscopy (POM) and X‐ray diffraction. The effect of the initial ratio between epichlorohydrin and diol on the molecular weight was not significant enough to change the thermal behavior of the oligomers essentially. The copolymerization of epoxy‐ and hydroxyl‐terminated comonomers yielded high‐molecular weight oligomer, whose enantiotropic liquid crystalline character was proved by means of DSC, POM and X‐ray diffraction.  相似文献

Liquid‐crystalline, segmented polyurethanes with methoxy–biphenyl mesogens pendant on the chain extender were synthesized by the conventional prepolymer technique and esterification reaction. Two, side‐chain, liquid‐crystalline (SCLC) polyurethanes with mesogens having spacers of six and eight methylene units were prepared. The structures of the mesogenic units and SCLC polyurethanes were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H NMR. Polymer properties were also examined by solubility tests, water uptakes, and inherent viscosity measurements. Differential scanning calorimetry studies indicated that the transition temperature of the isotropic to the liquid‐crystalline phase decreased with increasing spacer length. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) studies revealed the existence of liquid‐crystalline phases for both SCLC polyurethanes. Polarized optical microscopic investigations further confirmed the thermotropic liquid‐crystalline behaviors and nematic mesophases of both samples. Thermogravimetric analysis displayed better thermal stabilities for both SCLC polymers and indicated that the presence of mesogenic side chains may increase the thermal stability of segmented polyurethanes. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of polysiloxane side chain liquid crystal polymers with strong polarity cyano substitution‐terminated achiral side chains and cholesterol‐terminated chiral side chains was successfully synthesized via thiol‐ene click chemistry. 1H‐NMR, FT‐IR, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to confirm their chemical structures and thermal stabilities. Their phase transition behaviors and phase structures were systematically investigated by a combination of analysis methods such as differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and X‐ray. Results revealed that attributing to the decisive role of the polarity interaction, all the polymers only developed a monolayer interdigitated SmA phase in which the period arrangement was determined by the cyano‐terminated side chains, the increased content of cholesterol‐terminated chiral side chains (Xchol) just expanded the distance between neighboring molecules within a layer. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of chiral smectic C phase shish‐kebab type liquid crystal polymers was synthesized by low‐temperature solution condensation polymerization from 2,5‐bis[4‐((S)‐alkoxyl)benzoyloxy]hydroquinone and aliphatic diacylchloride. The monomers and their precursors were identified by using elemental analysis, infrared spectrum, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. The polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, temperature‐variable X‐ray diffraction, polarimeter and polarizing microscope (POM) with a heating stage. All the polymers entered into liquid crystal phase when heated to above their melting temperature. The Schlieren texture and sanded texture were observed on POM. All the chiral compounds and polymers showed high optical activity. Temperature‐variable, X‐ray diffraction study together with the POM and polarimetric analysis revealed that the polymers synthesized are chiral smectic C phase. Thus, the present report provides examples of shish‐kebab type polymers that form a chiral smectic C phase. The change of the melting temperature and isotropization temperature with the variation in molecular structure was also discussed. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A novel combined main‐chain/side‐chain liquid crystalline polymer based on mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystal polymers (MJLCPs) containing two biphenyls per mesogenic core of MJLCPs main chain, poly(2,5‐bis{[6‐(4‐butoxy‐4′‐oxy‐biphenyl)hexyl]oxycarbonyl}styrene) (P1–P8) was successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The chemical structure of the monomer was confirmed by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. The molecular characterizations of the polymer with different molecular weights (P1–P8) were performed with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their phase transitions and liquid‐crystalline behaviors of the polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). We found that the polymers P1–P8 exhibited similar behavior with three different liquid crystalline phases upon heating to or cooling in addition to isotropic state, which should be related to the complex liquid crystal property of the side‐chain and the main‐chain. Moreover, the transition temperatures of liquid crystalline phases of P1–P8 are found to be dependent on the molecular weight. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) with T‐shaped two‐dimensional mesogenic units were synthesized via solution polycondensation. The LCPs were used as ligand polymers to coordinate with palladium dichloride, by which a series of polymeric palladium complexes were prepared. The liquid crystalline behaviors of the compounds were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. The entire palladium complexes went to liquid crystal phase when heated to their melting temperature (T m), and a threaded texture was observed. The melting point of all the complexes changes regularly with the increase of the end alkoxy group length and the flexible spacer unit in the ligand polymer. It is worth noting that some of the complexes without end substituent groups in the ligand polymer were also found to show liquid crystal behaviors, which would be a subject for further investigation. We examine some of the structural aspects that influence the mesomorphic behavior of liquid‐crystalline dimeric epoxy resins with imine groups in the mesogens. We synthesized two new series of monomers and compared them with previously synthesized monomers. Compared with previously studied series, the imine group in the new monomers is oriented differently with respect to the ether and ester groups linked to the end of the mesogenic unit. Our results confirmed the importance of polarization of the mesogenic groups and the presence of an ester group in the inner position in the formation of smectic mesophases. By curing with primary and tertiary amines, we demonstrate that these two requirements are necessary if liquid‐crystalline thermosets are to be obtained with different degrees of order. These studies were carried out with differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Conjugated polymers consisting of pyrrole or an N‐substituted pyrrole bridged by methine with a mesogenic group were synthesized. Chemical structures of the products were confirmed with IR, NMR, UV–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography analysis. Liquid crystallinity was examined with differential scanning calorimetry measurements and polarizing optical microscopy observations. Liquid crystal domains of the polymer were macroscopically oriented in one direction by an external magnetic force (10 Tesla). The polymer orientation was confirmed by optical microscopy and X‐ray analysis. One of the polymers exhibited a striated fan‐shaped texture when observed with a polarizing optical microscope. This is attributed to the formation of a chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase, which is a property of ferroelectricity. Spontaneous polarization of the polymer occurred at 110 nC/cm2. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 616–629, 2005  相似文献

A series of novel mesogen‐jacketed liquid‐crystal polymers, poly[2,5‐bis(4′‐alkoxyphenyl)‐styrene] (P‐n, n = 1–11), were prepared via free‐radical polymerization of newly synthesized monomers, 2,5‐bis(4′‐alkoxyphenyl)styrene (M‐n, n = 1–11). The influence of the alkoxy tail length on the liquid‐crystalline behaviors of the monomers and the polymers was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry, polarized optical microscopy (POM), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The monomers with n = 1–4, 9, and 11 were monotropic nematic liquid crystals. All other monomers exhibited enantiotropic nematic properties. Their melting points (Tm's) decreased first as n increased to 6, after which Tm increased slightly at longer spacer lengths. The isotropic–nematic transition temperatures decreased regularly with increasing n values in an odd–even way. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of the polymers first decreased as the tail lengths increased and then leveled off when n ≥ 7. All polymers were thermally stable and entered the mesophase at a temperature above Tg. Upon further heating, no mesophase‐to‐isotropic melt transition was observed before the polymers decomposed. WAXD studies indicated that an irreversible order–order transition for the polymers with short tails (n ≤ 5) and a reversible order–order transition for those with elongated tails (n ≥ 6) occurred at a temperature much higher than Tg. However, such a transition could not be identified by POM and could be detected by DSC only on heating scans for the polymers with long tails (n ≥ 7). © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers containing both cholesteric and thermochromic side groups were synthesized. Their chemical structures were confirmed with elemental analyses and Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and carbon‐13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The mesogenic properties and phase behavior were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarizing optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction measurements. The effect of the concentration of dye side groups on the phase behavior of the polymers was examined. The polymers showed smectic or cholesteric phases. Those polymers containing less than 20 mol % dye groups had good solubility, reversible phase transitions, wider mesophase temperature ranges, and higher thermal stability. The experimental results demonstrated that the isotropization temperature and mesophase temperature ranges decreased with an increasing concentration of dye groups. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel multi‐armed (di‐, tri‐ and tetra‐armed) mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystal polymers (MJLCPs) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of {2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene}(MPCS) using di‐, tri‐ and tetrafunctional initiator, respectively. The results show that the number average molecular weight (Mn,GPC) was increased versus monomer conversion, and the polydispersities were quite narrow (<1.19), which is the characteristic of controlled polymerization. The chemical structures of these multi‐armed mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystal polymers were confirmed by 1H NMR. The liquid crystalline behavior of these multi‐armed MJLCPs with arms ranging from two to four was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). It was found that liquid crystalline phases appeared simply when the number molecular weights (Mn,GPC) of these multi‐armed MJLCPs was higher than a certain critical values, that is, Mn,GPC > 1.87 × 104 g/mol, 1.84 × 104 g/mol, 2.69 × 104 and 3.68 × 104 g/mol, which were initiated by coil difunctional initiator, hard difunctional initiator, trifunctional initiator and tetrafunctional initiator, respectively. All the liquid crystalline phase was found to be stable up to the decomposition temperature of these multi‐armed MJLCPs. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Field‐emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) was used to monitor pinecone‐like Cu(II) crystal growth on polymeric fibers for various growth times. In FESEM images, Cu(II) complexes and Cu(OH)2 crystal growth on poly(acryloamidino ethylene amine) and poly(acryloamidino diethylenediamine) were observed. Up to an elapsed time of 16 min, crystal growth was observed in only one direction. However, after an elapsed time of 20 h, pinecone‐like crystals covered the entire surfaces of the synthesized polymers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used for analysis. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new monomer, 2,3,6,7,10,11‐hexa(methacrylate) triphenylene (HMTP), and its crystals have been successfully synthesized, and the solid‐state polymerization under UV irradiation has been investigated. The photo polymerization of HMTP in solid was confirmed by the reduction of vinyl bonds in the FT‐IR and UV spectra of PHMTP in comparison with the corresponding spectra of its precursor. Thus, IR spectroscope was used to follow the polymerization of HMTP crystals under UV irradiation, and kinetic studies show a first‐order reaction with rate constant of 6.12 × 10?3 min?1. This value is slightly larger than that measured by the weight method. The polarizing optical microscope and X‐ray diffraction were used to study the crystal structure difference between the polymers and its monomer. The results show that the polymers' crystals obtained from photo polymerization kept the monomer crystal lattice. Because of strong overlap between the π‐electron of the triphenylene, the monomer and polymer crystals showed different fluorescence properties. All these results proved that the photo polymerization of HMTP crystals is governed by the packing structure of monomer molecules; in other words, this reaction is just lattice controlled polymerization. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New side‐chain cholesteric liquid‐crystalline elastomers containing cholesteryl 4‐allyloxybenzoate as cholesteric mesogenic units and biphenyl 4,4′‐bis(10‐undecen‐1‐ylenate) as smectic crosslinking units were synthesized. The chemical structures of the olefinic compounds and polymers obtained were confirmed by element analysis, Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and carbon‐13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The mesogenic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarizing optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction measurements. The influence of the concentration of the crosslinking unit on the phase behavior of the elastomers was examined. The elastomers containing less than 17 mol % of the crosslinking units revealed elasticity, reversible mesomorphic phase transition, wider mesophase temperature ranges, and higher thermal stability. The experimental results demonstrated that the glass‐transition temperature, isotropization temperature, and mesophase temperature ranges decreased with an increasing concentation of the crosslinking unit. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of 8‐(nitro/benzhydryl‐substituted arylimino)‐7,7‐dimethyl‐5,6‐dihydroquinolines and the corresponding nickel halide complexes were synthesized and characterized. Molecular structures of representative nickel complexes were determined by single crystal X‐ray diffraction, showing the dinuclear dimers with distorted square‐pyramidal geometry around the nickel center. The binding energies determined by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate the effective coordination between the sp2‐nitrogen and nickel atoms as well as the influence of both the halogen ligands and the substituents within dihydroquinolines on the strength of the Ni? N bond. Ethylene polymerization with the nickel precatalysts in presence of either methylaluminoxane or diethylaluminum chloride was explored in detail. For the complexes containing the nitro substituent within the organic ligand, the catalytic activity is inversely proportional to the electron density around the nickel core determined by XPS; such phenomenon is consistent with the conclusion of the computational study stating that the activity of precatalysts is correlated with the net charge on the metal center. In the polymerization process, unimodal and branched polyethylenes containing vinyl or vinylene groups were obtained. The nickel precatalysts bearing bulky benzhydryl within the organic ligand as well as bromide rather than chloride attached to the nickel atom produce polymers with relatively large amount of vinylene groups. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly[ω‐(4′‐methoxy‐biphenyl‐4‐oxy)alkyl‐1‐glycidylether]s were synthesized by chemically modifying the corresponding poly(ω‐bromoalkyl‐1‐glycidylether)s with the sodium salt of 4‐hydroxy‐4′‐methoxybiphenyl. New high‐molecular‐weight side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers were obtained with excellent yields and almost quantitative degrees of modification. They were all insoluble in THF and other common solvents. Characterization by 13C NMR confirmed that all the polymers had the expected structure. The liquid crystalline behavior of the polymers was analyzed by DSC and polarized optical microscopy, and mesophase assignments were confirmed by X‐ray diffraction studies. Polymers that had alkyl spacers with n = 2 and 4 were smectic C, those that had spacers with n = 6 and 8 were nematic cybotactic, and those that had longer spacers (n = 10 and 12) were smectic C again. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A set of poly[ω‐(4′‐cyano‐4‐biphenyloxy)alkyl‐1‐glycidylether]s were synthesized by the chemical modification of the corresponding poly(ω‐bromoalkyl‐1‐glycidylether)s with the sodium salt of 4‐cyano‐4′‐hydroxybiphenyl. New high‐molecular‐weight side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers were obtained with excellent yield and almost quantitative degree of modification. All side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers were rubbers soluble in tetrahydrofuran. The characterization by 1H and 13C NMR revealed no changes in the regioregular isotactic microstructure of the starting polymer and the absence of undesirable side reactions such as deshydrobromination. The liquid crystalline behavior was analyzed by DSC and polarized optical microscopy, and mesophase assignments were confirmed by X‐ray diffraction. Polymers that had alkyl spacers with n = 2 and 4 were nematic, those that had spacers with n = 6 and 8 were nematic cybotactic, and those that had longer spacers (n = 10 and 12) were smectic C and showed some crystallization of the side alkyl chains. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
