A novel dianhydride monomer, 3,6‐di[3′,5′‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]pyromellitic dianhydride (12FPMDA), was synthesized via a three‐step process: (1) the preparation of 3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)benzene boronic acid (6FBB) and 3,6‐dibromo‐1,2,4,5‐tetramethylbenzene (2B4MB) via Grignard and bromination reactions, respectively; (2) the Suzuki cross‐coupling reaction of 6FBB and 2B4MB, resulting in 3,6‐di[3′,5′‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]tetramethylbenzene (12F4MB); and (3) the oxidation and cyclodehydration of 12F4MB to afford 12FPMDA. 12FPMDA was then characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H NMR, 19F NMR, elemental analysis, and a melting‐point apparatus, and it was used to prepare polyimides with aromatic diamines such as 1,1‐bis(4‐aminophenyl)‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethane and 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylether. Polyimides were synthesized via a two‐step process: (1) the preparation of poly(amic acid) in p‐chlorophenol with isoquinoline and (2) solution imidization at the reflux temperature for 12 h. They were designed to have molecular weights of 20,000 g/mol via off‐stoichiometry. The resulting polyimides were characterized by FTIR, NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis, and their solubility, solution viscosity, water absorption, coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs), and dielectric constants were also evaluated. The polyimides exhibited excellent solubility even in acetone and toluene, high glass‐transition temperatures (>311 °C), good thermal stability (>518 °C in air), and well‐controlled molecular weights (19,000–21,000 g/mol). They also provided low CTEs (35–50 ppm/°C), water absorption (1.26–1.35 wt %), and dielectric constants (2.49–2.52). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel sulfonated polyimides (SPIs) were prepared from 1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA), 2,2′‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)biphenyl‐5,5′‐disulfonic acid (oBAPBDS) with nonlinear configuration, and common nonsulfonated diamines. Water uptake (WU) in liquid and vapor, water stability, and proton conductivity σ of the resulting SPI membranes were investigated. They were soluble in m‐cresol and dimethylsulfoxide, and their WUs in liquid were much larger than those of the SPIs from other sulfonated diamines with linear configuration such as 4,4′‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)biphenyl‐3,3′‐disulfonic acid (BAPBDS). NTDA‐oBAPBDS membrane was soluble in water at room temperature, whereas all the oBAPBDS‐based copolyimide membranes were insoluble in water and maintained mechanical strength after being soaked in distilled water at 80 °C for 40–1000 h. This much improved water stability was due to the enhanced solubility stability of membrane toward water. The water vapor sorption isotherms were rather similar between the SPIs with the nonlinear and linear configurations of sulfonated diamine moieties. The present SPIs with IECs of 1.8–2.6 meq/g, including NTDA‐BAPBDS, showed reasonably high proton conductivities under the highly humid conditions and roughly fell on the same σ–WU relation line. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel diamine, bis‐(3‐aminophenyl)‐4‐(trifluoromethyl)phenyl phosphine oxide (mDA3FPPO), containing phosphine oxide and fluorine moieties was prepared via the Grignard reaction from an intermediate, 4‐(trifluoromethyl)phenyl diphenyl phosphine oxide, that was synthesized from diphenylphosphinic chloride and 4‐(trifluoromethyl)bromobenzene, followed by nitration and reduction. The monomer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H NMR, 31P NMR, 19F NMR spectroscopies; elemental analysis; melting point measurements; and titration and was used to prepare polyimides with a number of dianhydrides such as pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 5,5′‐[2,2,2‐trifluoro‐1‐(trifluoromethyl)ethyliden]‐bis‐1,3‐isobenzofuranedione (6FDA), 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), and 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic dianhydride (ODPA). Polyimides were synthesized via a conventional two‐step route; preparation of polyamic acids, followed by solution imidization, and the molecular weight were controlled to 20,000 g/mol. Resulting polyimides were characterized by FTIR, NMR, DSC, and intrinsic viscosity measurements. Refractive‐index, dielectric constant, and adhesive properties were also determined. The properties of polyimides were compared with those of polyimides prepared from 1,1‐bis‐(4‐aminophenyl)‐1‐phenyl‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethane (3FDAm) and bis‐(3‐aminophenyl) phenyl phosphine oxide (mDAPPO). The polyimides prepared from mDA3FPPO provided high glass‐transition temperatures (248–311 °C), good thermal stability, excellent solubility, low birefringence (0.0030–0.0036), low dielectric constants (2.9–3.1), and excellent adhesive properties with Cu foils (107 g/mm). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new diamine monomer, 4,4″‐bis(aminophenoxy)‐3,3″‐trifluoromethyl terphenyl (ATFT) was synthesized that led to a number of novel fluorinated polyimides by solution as well as thermal imidization routes when reacted with different commercially available dianhydrides like pyromellatic dianhydride (PMDA), benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA), or 2,2‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane (6FDA). The polyimides ATFT/BTDA and ATFT/6FDA derived from both routes were soluble in several organic solvents such as N,N‐dimethylformamide, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, and dimethyl sulfoxide. The polyimide ATFT/PMDA was only soluble in N‐methylpyrollidone. The polyimide films had low water absorption of 0.3–0.7%, low dielectric constants of 2.72–3.3 at 1 Hz, refractive indices of 1.594–1.647 at 589.3 nm, and optical transparency >85%. These polyimides showed very high thermal stability with decomposition temperatures (5% weight loss) up to 532 °C in air and good isothermal stability; only 7% weight loss occurred at 400 °C after 7 h, and less than 0.6% weight loss was observed at 315 °C for 5 h. Transparent thin films of these polyimides exhibited tensile strengths up to 112 MPa, a modulus of elasticity up to 3.05 GPa, and elongation at break up to 21% depending on the repeating unit structure. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Organosoluble homopolyimides (PIs) and copolyimides (CoPIs) were synthesized from 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane (BAPP) or 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane (6FBAPP) and six kinds of commercial aromatic dianhydrides (PMDA, II a ; BTDA, II b ; BPDA, II c ; ODPA, II d ; DSDA, II e ; 6FDA, II f ). Although BAPP and II d∼f could prepare three kinds of soluble PIs ( III‐A d∼f ), likewise 6FBAPP and II c∼f could prepare four PIs ( III‐B c∼f ), the insoluble PIs were synthesized from these two diamines and other dianhydrides. However, soluble CoPIs could be prepared by alternative copolycondensation from a pair of dianhydrides of soluble PIs and insoluble PIs in certain molar ratios (m1/m2). The ratios of m1/m2 of BAPP/PMDA series CoPIs ( IV m1(d–f)/m2a ) ranged from 3–5, but ratios of 6FBAPP/PMDA series CoPIs ( V m1(c∼f)/m2a ) decreased to 2–3. The m1/m2 of the BAPP/BTDA and 6FBAPP/BTDA series CoPIs were 2, while the BAPP/BPDA series were between 1–2. Composition, solubility, tensile properties and thermal properties of these CoPIs synthesized via a two‐stage thermal cyclodehydration were determined and were compared with their corresponding PIs. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of organosoluble aromatic polyimides (PIs) was synthesized from 5,5′‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]‐4,7‐methanohexahydroindan (3) and commercial available aromatic dianhydrides such as 3,3′,4,4′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA), 4,4′‐sulfonyl diphthalic anhydride (SDPA), or 2,2′‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropanic dianhydride (6FDA). PIs (IIIc–f), which were synthesized by direct polymerization in m‐cresol, had inherent viscosities of 0.83–1.05 dL/g. These polymers could easily be dissolved in N,N′‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP), N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF), pyridine, m‐cresol, and dichloromethane. Whereas copolymerization was proceeded with equivalent molar ratios of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)/6FDA, 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA)/6FDA, or BTDA/SDPA, or ½ for PMDA/SDPA, copolyimides (co‐PIs), derived from 3 and mixed dianhydrides, were soluble in NMP. All the soluble PIs could form transparent, flexible, and tough films, and they showed amorphous characteristics. These films had tensile strengths of 88–111 MPa, elongations at break of 5–10% and initial moduli of 2.01–2.67 GPa. The glass transition temperatures of these polymers were in the range of 252–311°C. Except for IIIe, the 10% weight loss temperatures (Td) of PIs were above 500°C, and the amount of carbonized residues of the PIs at 800°C in nitrogen atmosphere were above 50%. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A novel diamine, bis(3‐aminophenyl)‐4‐(1‐adamantyl)phenoxyphenyl phosphine oxide (mDAATPPO), was synthesized via the Williamson ether reaction of 4‐(1‐adamantyl)phenol and bis(3‐nitrophenyl)‐4‐fluorophenyl phosphine oxide, followed by reduction. The phenol group was prepared by the Friedel–Crafts reaction of 1‐bromoadamantane and phenol, whereas the phosphine oxide group was synthesized by the Grignard reaction of 1‐bromo‐4‐fluorobezene and diphenyl phosphinic chloride, followed by nitration. The monomer and its intermediate compounds were characterized with Fourier transform infrared, NMR, and melting‐point apparatus. The monomer was then used to prepare polyimides with 2,2‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride, 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic dianhydride, and pyromellitic dianhydride by the conventional two‐step synthesis: the preparation of poly(amic acid) followed by solution imidization. The molecular weights of the polyimides were controlled to 20,000 g/mol by off‐stoichiometry, and the synthesized polyimides were characterized with Fourier transform infrared, NMR, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. In addition, the solubility, intrinsic viscosity, dielectric constant, and birefringence of the polyimides were evaluated. Novel polyimides with mDAATPPO exhibited good solubility, high glass‐transition temperatures (290–330 °C), excellent thermal stability (>500 °C), low dielectric constants (2.77–3.01), low refractive indices, and low birefringence values (0.0019–0.0030). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 1,1‐Bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]‐1‐phenylethane (BAPPE) was prepared through nucleophilic substitution reaction of 1,1‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐1‐phenylethane and p‐chloronitrobenzene in the presence of K2CO3 in N,N‐dimethylformamide, followed by catalytic reduction with hydrazine and Pd/C. Novel organosoluble polyimides and copolyimides were synthesized from BAPPE and six kinds of commercial dianhydrides, including pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA, Ia ), 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA, Ib ), 3,3′,4,4′‐ biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA, Ic ), 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA, Id ), 3,3′,4,4′‐diphenylsulfonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (DSDA, Ie ) and 4,4′‐hexafluoroisopropylidenediphthalic anhydride (6FDA, If ). Differing with the conventional polyimide process by thermal cyclodehydration of poly(amic acid), when polyimides were prepared by chemical cyclodehydration with N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone as used solvent, resulted polymers showed good solubility. Additional, Ia,b were mixed respectively with the rest of dianhydrides (Ic–f) and BAPPE at certain molar ratios to prepare copolyimides with arbitrary solubilities. These polyimides and copolyimides were characterized by good mechanical properties together with good thermal stability. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. To investigate the position and amount of the CF3 group affecting the coloration of polyimides (PIs), we prepared 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane ( 2 ) with four CF3 groups with 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride and 2,2‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenol)hexafluoropropane. A series of soluble and light‐colored fluorinated PIs ( 5 ) were synthesized from 2 and various aromatic dianhydrides ( 3a – 3f ). 5a – 5f had inherent viscosities ranging from 0.80 to 1.19 dL/g and were soluble in amide polar solvents and even in less polar solvents. The glass‐transition temperatures of 5 were 221–265 °C, and the 10% weight‐loss temperatures were above 493 °C. Their films had cutoff wavelengths between 343 and 390 nm, b* values (a yellowness index) ranging from 5 to 41, dielectric constants of 2.68–3.01 (1 MHz), and moisture absorptions of 0.03–0.29 wt %. In a comparison of the PI series 6 – 8 based on 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane, 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl]propane, and 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane, we found that the CF3 group close to the imide group was more effective in lowering the color; this means that CF3 of 5 , 7 , and 8f was more effective than that of 6c . The color intensity of the four PI series was lowered in the following order: 5 > 7 > 6 > 8 . The PI 5f , synthesized from diamine 2 and 4,4′‐hexafluoroisopropylidenediphthalic anhydride, had six CF3 groups in a repeated segment, so it exhibited the lightest color among the four series. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hybrid nanocomposite films of poly(vinylsilsesquioxane) (PVSSQ) and polyimide (PI) (PI/PVSSQ) were prepared via sol‐gel process from triethoxyvinylsilane (VSSQ) and thermal imidization from 3,3′,4,4′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA)‐p‐phenylene diamine (PDA) polyamic acid (BPDA‐PDA PAA). We investigated the microstructure; interfacial interaction; and optical, thermal, dielectric, and mechanical properties of the hybrid films. The phase morphologies and degree of surface roughness were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM), respectively. It was found that the surface topography was influenced by the composition of PVSSQ. Hydrogen bonding interactions between polyimide (PI) matrix and PVSSQ domains were proved with FT‐IR spectroscopy. The transparency of the hybrid films was found to be dependent on the PVSSQ content. Incorporating of the PVSSQ in the hybrid composites increased the glass transition temperature of PI. Dielectric constants of the hybrid films were in the range of 2.37–3.59. Properties of the PI films were also significantly enhanced by adding 5–30 wt % of PVSSQ. For comparison, we also prepared the hybrid composites of PI and mixtures of VSSQ and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and the PI/silica hybrid composite containing 30 wt % of silica obtained from TEOS. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new synthetic route to 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA (where BTDA is benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride), an isomer of 2,3′,3′,4′‐BTDA and 3,3′,4,4′‐BTDA, is described. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis of 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA has shown that this dianhydride has a bent and noncoplanar structure. The polymerizations of 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA with 4,4′‐oxydianiline (ODA) and 4,4′‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene (TPEQ) have been investigated with a conventional two‐step process. A trend of cyclic oligomers forming in the reaction of 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA and ODA has been found and characterized with IR, NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, and elemental analyses. Films based on 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA/TPEQ can only be obtained from corresponding polyimide (PI) solutions prepared by chemical imidization because those from their polyamic acids by thermal imidization are brittle. PIs from 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA have lower inherent viscosities and worse thermal and mechanical properties than the corresponding 2,3′,3′,4′‐BTDA‐ and 3,3′,4,4′‐BTDA‐based PIs. PIs from 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA and 2,3′,3′,4′‐BTDA are amorphous, whereas those from 3,3′,4,4′‐BTDA have some crystallinity, according to wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Furthermore, PIs from 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA have better solubility, higher glass‐transition temperatures, and higher melt viscosity than those from 2,3′,3′,4′‐BTDA and 3,3′,4,4′‐BTDA. Model compounds have been prepared to explain the order of the glass‐transition temperatures found in the isomeric PI series. The isomer effects on the PI properties are discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 2130–2144, 2004  相似文献

A novel aromatic diamine monomer, 3,3′‐diisopropyl‐4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl‐3′′,4′′‐difluorophenylmethane (PAFM), was successfully synthesized by coupling of 2‐isopropylaniline and 3,4‐difluorobenzaldehyde. The aromatic diamine was adopted to synthesize a series of fluorinated polyimides by polycondensation with various dianhydrides: pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 3,3′,4,4′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA) and 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) via the conventional one‐step method. These polyimides presented excellent solubility in common organic solvents, such as N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF), N,N‐dimethyl acetamide (DMAc), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP), chloroform (CHCl3), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and so on. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of fluorinated polyimides were in the range of 260–306°C and the temperature at 10% weight loss in the range of 474–502°C. Their films showed the cut‐off wavelengths of 330–361 nm and higher than 80% transparency in a wavelength range of 385–463 nm. Moreover, polymer films exhibited low dielectric properties in the range of 2.76–2.96 at 1 MHz, as well as prominent mechanical properties with tensile strengths of 66.7–97.4 MPa, a tensile modulus of 1.7–2.1 GPa and elongation at break of 7.2%–12.9%. The polymer films also showed outstanding hydrophobicity with the contact angle in the range of 91.2°–97.9°.  相似文献

Poly(amic acid)s (PAAs) having the high solution stability and transmittance at 365 nm for photosensitive polyimides have been developed. PAAs with a twisted conformation in the main chains were prepared from 2,2′,6,6′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (2,2′,6,6′‐BPDA) and aromatic diamines. Imidization of PAAs was achieved by chemical treatment using trifluoroacetic anhydride. Among them, the PAA derived from 2,2′,6,6′‐BPDA and 4,4′‐(1,3‐phenylenedioxy)dianiline was converted to the polyimide by thermal treatment. The heating at 300 °C under nitrogen did not complete thermal imidization of PAAs having glass‐transition temperatures (Tg)s higher than 300 °C to the corresponding PIs. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new aromatic, unsymmetrical ether diamine with a trifluoromethyl pendent group, 1,4‐(2′‐trifluoromethyl‐4′,4″‐diaminodiphenoxy)benzene, was successfully synthesized in three steps with hydroquinone as a starting material and polymerized with various aromatic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides, including 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride, 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride, 2,2′‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxyphenyl)‐hexafluoropropane dianhydride, and pyromellitic dianhydride, via a conventional two‐step thermal or chemical imidization method to produce a series of fluorinated polyimides. The polyimides were characterized with solubility tests, viscosity measurements, IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction studies, and thermogravimetric analysis. The polyimides had inherent viscosities of 0.56–0.77 dL/g and were easily dissolved in both polar, aprotic solvents and common, low‐boiling‐point solvents. The resulting strong and flexible polyimide films exhibited excellent thermal stability, with decomposition temperatures (at 5% weight loss) above 522 °C and glass‐transition temperatures in the range of 232–272 °C. Moreover, the polymer films showed outstanding mechanical properties, with tensile strengths of 74.5–121.7 MPa, elongations at break of 6–13%, and initial moduli of 1.46–1.95 GPa, and good dielectric properties, with low dielectric constants of 1.82–2.53 at 10 MHz. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction measurements revealed that these polyimides were predominantly amorphous. These outstanding combined features ensure that the polymers are desirable candidate materials for advanced microelectronic applications. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new bis(ether anhydride), 3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethyl‐2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]propane dianhydride ( 3 ), was prepared in three steps: the nitro displacement of 4‐nitrophthalonitrile with 2,2‐bis(4‐hydroxy‐3,5‐dimethylphenyl)propane, the alkaline hydrolysis of the intermediate bis(ether dinitrile), and the subsequent dehydration of the resulting bis(ether diacid). A series of new highly soluble poly(ether imide)s with tetramethyl and isopropylidene groups were prepared from the bis(ether anhydride) 3 with various diamines by a conventional two‐stage synthesis including polyaddition and chemical cyclodehydration. The resulting poly(ether imide)s had inherent viscosities of 0.54–0.73 dL g?1. Gel permeation chromatography measurements revealed that the polymers had number‐average and weight‐average molecular weights of up to 54,000 and 124,000, respectively. All the polymers showed typical amorphous diffraction patterns. All of the poly(ether imide)s showed excellent solubility and were readily dissolved in various solvents such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, N,N‐dimethylformamide, pyridine, cyclohexanone, tetrahydrofuran, and even chloroform. Most of the polymers could be dissolved with chloroform concentrations as high as 30 wt %. These polymers had glass‐transition temperatures of 244–282 °C. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that all polymers were stable, with 10% weight losses recorded above 463 °C in nitrogen. These transparent, tough, and flexible polymer films were obtained through solution casting from N,N‐dimethylacetamide solutions. These polymer films had tensile strengths of 81–102 MPa and tensile moduli of 1.8–2.0 GPa. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 2556–2563, 2002  相似文献

New aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride, having isopropylidene and bromo‐substituted arylene ether structure 3,3′,5,5′‐tetrabromo‐2,2‐bis[4‐(3,4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]propane dianhydride, was synthesized by the reaction of 4‐nitrophthalonitrile with 3,3′,5,5′‐tetrabromobisphenol A, followed by alkaline hydrolysis of the intermediate bis(ether dinitrile) and subsequent dehydration of the resulting bis(ether diacid). The novel aromatic polyetherimides having inherent viscosities up to 1.04 dL g−1 were obtained by either a one‐step or a conventional two‐step polymerization process starting from the bis(ether anhydride) and various aromatic diamines. These aromatic polyimides had glass transition temperatures in the range of 256–303°C, depending on the nature of the diamine moiety. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that all polymers were stable, with 10% weight loss recorded above 470°C in nitrogen. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A novel, fluorinated diamine monomer with the ether–ketone group, 4,4′‐bis(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)benzophenone ( 2 ), was prepared through the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride and 4,4′‐dihydroxybenzophenone in the presence of potassium carbonate, followed by catalytic reduction with hydrazine and Pd/C. Flourinated polyimides (PIs) 5a – f and copolyimides (co‐PIs) 5c / a – f were synthesized from 2 and various commercial aromatic dianhydrides via thermal or chemical imidization. PIs 5a – f had inherent viscosities ranging from 0.72 to 1.22 dL/g. Besides the chemical imidization of 5c ( C ), the 5 ( C ) series were soluble in amide‐type solvents and even in less polar solvents, but PIs 5a – f prepared via thermal imidization were insoluble. PI films 5a – f exhibited tensile strengths ranging from 92 to 112 MPa, elongations at break from 8 to 15%, and initial moduli from 2.0 to 2.1 GPa. The glass‐transition temperatures of the 5 series were in the range of 232–278 °C, and the 10% weight‐loss temperatures were above 535 °C, with more than a 50% char yield at 800 °C in nitrogen. In comparison of the PI 5 series with the analogous non‐fluorinated PIs 6 series based on 4,4′‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)benzophenone, the 5 series revealed better solubility, lower color intensity, dielectric constant, and moisture absorption. Their PI films had cutoff wavelengths between 370 and 410 nm, b* values ranging from 9.6 to 58.3, dielectric constants of 3.05–3.64 (1 MHz), with moisture absorption in the range of 0.08–0.38 wt %. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
