Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with molecular weight (Mn) of 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 g/mol, four types of diisocyanate [hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), 4,4′-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate (H12MDI), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), and toluene diisocyanate (TDI)], two types of comonomers [acrylamide (AAm) and acrylic acid (AAc)] that comprised up to 60% of the total solid were used to prepare UV-curable PEG–based polyurethane (PU) acrylate hydrogel. The gels were evaluated in terms of mechanical properties, water content as a function of immersion time and pH, and X-ray diffraction profiles of dry and swollen films. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The adhesive properties of blends of high molecular weight poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) and low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were systematically investigated with a probe test and correlated with their viscoelastic properties. The material parameters that were varied were the PEG content (31–41 wt %) and the hydration rate. The 36% PEG showed the best balance of properties for a pressure‐sensitive adhesive. At low debonding rates, the debonding took place through the formation of a fibrillar structure, whereas at high debonding rates, the debonding was brittle. This transition was attributed to the breakage and reformation of hydrogen bonds between PVP units and OH groups on PEG during the large strain of the polymer chains in elongation. This transition was observed, albeit shifted in frequency, for all three compositions, and the characteristic relaxation times of the hydrogen‐bonded network were estimated. A comparison between the tack properties of the adhesives and their linear viscoelastic properties showed a very strong decoupling between the small‐strain and large‐strain properties of the adhesive, which was indicative of a pronounced deviation from rubber elasticity in the behavior of the blends. This deviation, also seen during tensile tests, was attributed to the peculiar phase behavior of the blends. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic biodegradable block copolymers [poly(sebacic anhydride)–poly(ethylene glycol)–poly(sebacic anhydride)] were synthesized by the melt polycondensation of poly(ethylene glycol) and sebacic anhydride prepolymers. The chemical structure, crystalline nature, and phase behavior of the resulting copolymers were characterized with 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared, gel permeation chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. Microphase separation of the copolymers occurred, and the crystallinity of the poly(sebacic anhydride) (PSA) blocks diminished when the sebacic anhydride unit content in the copolymer was only 21.6%. 1H NMR spectra carried out in CDCl3 and D2O were used to demonstrate the existence of hydrophobic PSA domains as the core of the micelle. In aqueous media, the copolymers formed micelles after precipitation from water‐miscible solvents. The effects on the micelle sizes due to the micelle preparation conditions, such as the organic phase, dropping rate of the polymer organic solution into the aqueous phase, and copolymer concentrations in the organic phase, were studied. There was an increase in the micelle size as the molecular weight of the PSA block was increased. The diameters of the copolymer micelles were also found to increase as the concentration of the copolymer dissolved in the organic phase was increased, and the dependence of the micelle diameters on the concentration of the copolymer varied with the copolymer composition. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The design and synthesis of a new dendrimer–poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) conjugate that may be used as a model drug carrier are described. The starting material is a polyether dendrimer with two different types of chain end functionalities. The dendritic assembly is made water soluble through attachment of short PEG chains to the dendrimer via one type of functionality. The remaining chain end functionalities then were used to incorporate model drug molecules of varying polarity into the modified dendrimer. Cholesterol and two amino acid derivatives were selected as model drugs for attachment through their respective hydroxyl, carboxylic acid, and amino functional groups to the dendrimer via carbonate, ester, and carbamate linkages. The resulting water-soluble dendrimer-model drug conjugates were characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The confined crystallization behavior, melting behavior, and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of the poly(ethylene glycol) block (PEG) in poly(L ‐lactide)–poly(ethylene glycol) (PLLA–PEG) diblock copolymers were investigated with wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The analysis showed that the nonisothermal crystallization behavior changed from fitting the Ozawa equation and the Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny to deviating from them with the molecular weight of the poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) block increasing. This resulted from the gradual strengthening of the confined effect, which was imposed by the crystallization of the PLLA block. The nucleation mechanism of the PEG block of PLLA15000–PEG5000 at a larger degree of supercooling was different from that of PLLA2500–PEG5000, PLLA5000–PEG5000, and PEG5000 (the numbers after PEG and PLLA denote the molecular weights of the PEG and PLLA blocks, respectively). They were homogeneous nucleation and heterogeneous nucleation, respectively. The PLLA block bonded chemically with the PEG block and increased the crystallization activation energy, but it provided nucleating sites for the crystallization of the PEG block, and the crystallization rate rose when it was heterogeneous nucleation. The number of melting peaks was three and one for the PEG homopolymer and the PEG block of the diblock copolymers, respectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Water-soluble graft copolymers were synthesized by copolymerization of acrylamide with mono-methoxy-poly(ethylene oxide)-methacrylates (Me-PEO-MA). The Me-PEO-MA macromers were synthesized by a catalytic esterification of methacrylic acid with mono-methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol)s with different molecular weights. The graft copolymers obtained were characterized by 1H-NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and Ubbelohde viscosimetry. The rheological behaviour of aqueous polymer solutions, which are expected to show hydrophobic association at elevated temperatures, was studied with a cone and plate-rheometer.  相似文献

A new series of segmented copolymers were synthesized from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) oligomers and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) by a two‐step solution polymerization reaction. PET oligomers were obtained by glycolysis depolymerization. Structural features were defined by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The copolymer composition was calculated via 1H NMR spectroscopy. The content of soft PEG segments was higher than that of hard PET segments. A single glass‐transition temperature was detected for all the synthesized segmented copolymers. This observation was found to be independent of the initial PET‐to‐PEG molar ratio. The molar masses of the copolymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 4448–4457, 2004  相似文献

This study describes the synthesis and aggregation behavior of thermosensitive poly(di(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether methacrylate) (P(DEGMA‐ME)) conjugated with the fluorescently labeled pentapeptide glycine‐arginine‐lysine‐phenylalanine‐glycine‐dansyl (GRKFG‐Dns). The GRKFG‐Dns was obtained using Fmoc solid‐phase peptide synthesis and was modified with 2‐bromopropionic acid to initiate an atom transfer radical polymerization of di(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether methacrylate (DEGMA‐ME). The polymerization led to a well‐defined P(DEGMA‐ME)–GRKFG‐Dns conjugate with a number average molar mass of 108,000 g/mol. The pentapeptide acted as a hydrophilic moiety that increased the phase transition temperature compared to the P(DEGMA‐ME) homopolymer of similar molar mass. The bioconjugate macromolecules aggregated in dilute aqueous solution into spherical particles (mesoglobules). The sizes of aggregates were easily controlled by changing the concentration and heating rate of the P(DEGMA‐ME)‐GRKFG‐Dns solution. The weight average molar masses and sizes of mesoglobules were determined based on light scattering measurements. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the bioconjugate in dilute solution was performed at temperatures below and above the cloud point temperature of the bioconjugate. The peptides were fully accessible to enzymatic digestion even when the macromolecules were aggregated to mesoglobules, indicating that the peptide segments in mesoglobules formed the external shell of the nanoparticles and could be easily released by enzymes. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined ABA triblock copolymers in which A stands for poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and B for poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF) were synthesized by end‐capping bifunctionally living PTHF with different polyethylene glycol–monomethylethers. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis of these copolymers showed two melting points: one around 55 °C due to the PEO blocks, and one around 30 °C due to the PTHF segments, demonstrating that these block copolymers show extensive phase separation. Upon addition of sodium thiocyanate, crystalline complexes with PEO were formed and as a consequence, the melting points of the PEO segments had shifted to approximately 170 °C, whereas the melting points of the PTHF segments decreased slightly. The obtained materials behave as thermoplastic elastomers up to 160–175 °C. The influence of the relative lengths of the PEO and the PTHF segments on the thermal and mechanical properties of the materials have been investigated. Linear and branched poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) copolymers with polyethylene glycol) (PEG) methyl ether (700 or 2000 g/mol) end groups were synthesized using conventional melt polymerization. DSC analysis demonstrated that low levels of PEG end groups accelerated PET crystallization. The incorporated PEG end groups also decreased the crystallization temperature of PET dramatically, and copolymers with a high content of PEG (>17.6 wt%) were able to crystallize at room temperature. Rheological analysis demonstrated that the presence of PEG end groups effectively decreased the melt viscosities and facilitated melt processing. XPS and ATR-FTIR revealed that the PEG end groups tended to aggregate on the surface, and the surface of compression molded films containing 34.0 wt% PEG were PEG rich (85 wt% PEG). PEG end-capped PET (34.0 wt% PEG) and PET films were immersed into a fibrinogen solution (0.7 mg/mL BSA) for 72 h to investigate the propensity for protein adhesion. XPS demonstrated that the concentration of nitrogen (1.05%) on the surface of PEG endcapped PET film was statistically lower than PET (7.67%). SEM analysis was consistent with XPS results, and revealed the presence of adsorbed protein on the surface of PET films.  相似文献

The aqueous solution behavior and thermoreversible gelation properties of pyridine‐end‐functionalized poly(ethylene glycol)–poly(L ‐lactide) (PEG–(PLLA)8–py) star block copolymers in the presence of coordinating transition metal ions were studied. In aqueous solutions, the macromonomers self‐assembled into micelles and micellar aggregates at low concentrations and formed physically crosslinked, thermoreversible hydrogels above a critical gel concentration (CGC) of 8% w/v. In the presence of transition metal ions like Cu(II), Co(II), or Mn(II), the aggregate dimensions increased. Above the CGC, the gel–sol transition shifted to higher temperatures due to the formation of additional crosslinks from intermolecular coordination complexes between metal ions and pyridine ligands. Furthermore, as an example, PEG–(PLLA)8–py hydrogels stabilized by Mn(II)–pyridine coordination complexes were more resistant against degradation/dissolution when placed in phosphate buffered saline at 37 °C when compared with hydrogels prepared in water. Importantly, the stabilizing effect of metal–ligand coordination was noticeable at very low Cu(II) concentrations, which have been reported to be noncytotoxic for fibroblasts in vitro. These novel PEG–(PLLA)8–py metallo‐hydrogels, which are the first systems to combine metal–ligand coordination with the advantageous properties of PEG–PLLA copolymer hydrogels, are appealing materials that may find use in biomedical as well as environmental applications like the removal of heavy metal ions from waste streams. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The surface of polyethersulfone (PES) membrane was modified by blending triblock copolymers of methoxyl poly(ethylene glycol)-polyurethane-methoxyl poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG-PU-mPEG), which were synthesized through solution polymerization with mPEG Mns of 500 and 2000, respectively. The PES and PES/mPEG-PU-mPEG blended membranes were prepared through spin coating coupled with liquid-liquid phase separation. FTIR and (1)H NMR analysis confirmed that the triblock copolymers were successfully synthesized. The functional groups and morphologies of the membranes were studied by ATR-FTIR and SEM, respectively. It was found that the triblock copolymers were blended into PES membranes successfully, and the morphologies of the blended membranes were somewhat different from PES membrane. The water contact angles and platelet adhesion were decreased after blending mPEG-PU-mPEG into PES membranes. Meanwhile, the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) for the blended membranes increased. The anti-protein-fouling property and permeation property of the blended membranes improved obviously. SEM observation and 3-(4, 5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay proved the surfaces of the blended membranes promoted human hepatocytes adhesion and proliferation better than PES membrane.  相似文献

Melt crystallization behaviors of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐isophthalate) (PETI) containing 2 and 12 mol % of noncrystallizable isophthalate components were investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) isothermal results revealed that the introduction of 2 mol % isophthalate into PET caused a change of the crystal growth process from a two‐dimensional to a three‐dimensional spherulitic growth. The addition of more isophthalate up to 12 mol % into the PET structure induced a change in the crystal growth from a three‐dimensional to a two‐dimensional crystal growth. DSC heating scans after completion of isothermal crystallization at various Tc's showed three melting endotherms for PET and four melting endotherms for PETI‐2 and PETI‐12. The presence of an additional melting endotherm is attributed to the melting of copolyester crystallite composed of ethylene glycol, tere‐phthalate, and isophthalate (IPA) or the melting of molecular chains near IPA formed by melting the secondary crystallite Tm (I) and then recrystallizing during heating. Analyses of both Avrami and Lauritzen‐Hoffman equations revealed that PETI containing 2 mol % of isophthalate had the highest Avrami exponent n, growth rate constant Go, and product of lateral and end surface free energies σσe. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Coumarin-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) monols and diols were isothermally crystallized at temperatures between 20 and 35 °C before and after exposure to approximately 110 J cm−2 of ultra-violet A (λ > 300 nm, UVA) irradiation. Irradiation dimerized the coumarin groups and chain-extended the coumarin-functionalized PEG oligomers. The higher molecular weights reduced the crystal growth rate by as much as 50% compared to the non-irradiated coumarin-functionalized PEG oligomers under ambient crystallization conditions. Hoffman’s kinetic nucleation theory was utilized to evaluate the types of nucleation that occurred for the coumarin-functionalized PEG diols (COU-PEG-COU). Crystallization regimes II and III were observed for the coumarin-modified PEG oligomers before and after exposure to UVA light.  相似文献

The infrared absorption of poly(ethylene glycol) was measured in the molten state. Characteristic bands of the molten state were identified. Normal vibrations and frequency distributions were treated for various conformation models with CH2CH2O repeat units. The infrared absorption peaks of the molten state closely correspond to the frequency distribution peaks of the TGT conformation with gauche O? CH2? CH2? O groups, although infrared bands due to trans O? CH2? CH2? O groups are also observed. Vibrational assignments of the infrared bands and Raman lines were made on the basis of potential energy distributions.  相似文献

Arrays of releasable micropallets with surrounding walls of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were fabricated for the patterning and sorting of adherent cells. PEG walls were fabricated between the SU-8 pallets using a simple, mask-free strategy. By utilizing the difference in UV-transmittance of glass and SU-8, PEG monomer was selectively photopolymerized in the space surrounding the pallets. Since the PEG walls are composed of a cross-linked structure, the stability of the walls is independent of the pallet array geometry and the properties of the overlying solution. Even though surrounded with PEG walls, the individual pallets were detached from the array by the mechanical force generated by a focused laser pulse, with a release threshold of 6 microJ. Since the PEG hydrogels are repellent to protein adsorption and cell attachment, the walls localized cell growth to the pallet top surface. Cells grown in the microwells formed by the PEG walls were released by detaching the underlying pallet. The released cells/pallets were collected, cultured and clonally expanded. The micropallet arrays with PEG walls provide a platform for performing single cell analysis and sorting on chip.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene glycol) grafted poly(L -lactide) was prepared by ring opening polymerization of L -lactide and epoxy-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (PEGME). Stannous octoate and Al(Et)3·0.5 H2O were tested as polymerization catalysts, and Al(Et)3·0.5 H2O was found to be more effective for the ring-opening of the epoxy group of the modified PEGME monomer. The synthesized polymers were characterized by NMR and the efficiency of the incorporation of epoxy-terminated PEGME in the copolymer was determined.  相似文献

Time-resolved light scattering was employed to investigate kinetics of phase separation in mixtures of poly (ethylene glycol monomethylether) (PEGE)/poly (propylene glycol) (PPG) oligomers. Phase diagrams for PEGE/PPG of varying molecular weights were established by means of cold point measurements. The oligomer mixtures reveal an upper critical solution temperature (UCST). Several temperature quench experiments were carried out with a 60/40 PEGE/PPG blend by rapidly quenching from a single phase (69°C) to two-phase temperatures (66–61°C) at 1°C intervals. As is typical for oligomer mixtures, the early stage of spinodal decomposition (SD) was not detected. The kinetics of phase decomposition was found to be dominated by the late stage of SD. Time-evolution of scattering intensity was analyzed in accordance with nonlinear and dynamical scaling theories. The time dependence of the peak intensity Im and the corresponding peak wavenumber qm was found to follow the power-law {Im(t)? tα, qm(t)? t} with the values of α = 3 ± 0.3 and β = 1 ± 0.2, which are very close to the values predicted by Siggia. This process has been attributed to a coarsening mechanism driven by surface tension. In the temporal scaling analysis, the structure function reveals university with time, suggesting self-similarity. Phase separation dynamics in 60/40 PEGE/PPG resembles the behavior predicted for off-critical mixtures.  相似文献
