In this work, the poly(methacrylic acid‐coN‐isopropylacrylamide) thermosensitive composite hollow latex particles was synthesized by a three‐step reaction. The first step was to synthesize the poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid) (poly(MMA‐MAA)) copolymer latex particles by the method of soapless emulsion polymerization. The second step was to polymerize methacrylic acid (MAA), N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), and N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide in the presence of poly(MMA‐MAA) latex particles to form the linear poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid)/crosslinking poly(methacrylic acid‐coN‐isopropylacrylamide) (poly(MMA‐MAA)/poly(MAA‐NIPAAm)) core–shell latex particles. In the third step, the core–shell latex particles were heated in the presence of ammonia solution to form the crosslinking poly(MAA‐NIPAAm) thermosensitive hollow latex particles. The morphologies of poly(MMA‐MAA)/poly(MAA‐NIPAAm) core–shell latex particles and poly(MAA‐NIPAAm) hollow latex particles were observed. The influences of crosslinking agent and shell composition on the lower critical solution temperature of poly(MMA‐MAA)/poly(MAA‐NIPAAm) core–shell latex particles and poly(MAA‐NIPAAm) hollow latex particles were, respectively, studied. Besides, the poly(MAA‐NIPAAm) thermosensitive hollow latex particles were used as carriers to load with the model drug, caffeine. The effect of various variables on the amount of caffeine loading and the efficiency of caffeine release was investigated. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. In this work, the poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid)/poly(methacrylic acid‐co‐N‐isopropylacrylamide) thermosensitive composite semi‐hollow latex particles was synthesized by three processes. The first process was to synthesize the poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid) (poly (MMA‐MAA)) copolymer latex particles by the method of soapless emulsion polymerization. The second process was to polymerize methacrylic acid (MAA), N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), and crosslinking agent, N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide, in the presence of poly(MMA‐MAA) latex particles to form the linear poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid)/crosslinking poly(methacrylic acid‐co‐N‐isopropylacrylamide) (poly(MMA‐MAA)/poly(MAA‐NIPAAm)) core–shell latex particles with solid structure. In the third process, part of the linear poly(MMA‐MAA) core of core–shell latex particles was dissolved by ammonia to form the poly(MMA‐MAA)/poly(MAA‐NIPAAm) thermosensitive semi‐hollow latex particles. The morphologies of the semi‐hollow latex particles show that there is a hollow zone between the linear poly(MMA‐MAA) core and the crosslinked poly(MAA‐NIPAAm) shell. The crosslinking agent and shell composition significantly influenced the lower critical solution temperature of poly(MMA‐MAA)/poly(MAA‐NIPAAm) semi‐hollow latex particles. Besides, the poly(MMA‐MAA)/poly(MAA‐NIPAAm) thermosensitive semi‐hollow latex particles were used as carriers to load with the model drug, caffeine. The processes of caffeine loaded into the semi‐hollow latex particles appeared four situations, which was different from that of solid latex particles. In addition, the phenomenon of caffeine released from the semi‐hollow latex particles was obviously different from that of solid latex particles. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Cyclohexylcarbodiimidoethyl methacrylate (CCEMA) and t‐butylcarbodiimidoethyl methacrylate (t‐BCEMA) were prepared in a two‐step synthesis. These monomers were then used to prepare carbodiimide‐functionalized PBMA and PEHMA latex particles, employing two‐stage emulsion polymerization, with the carbodiimide–methacrylate monomers being introduced only in the second stage under monomer‐starved conditions. During emulsion polymerization, the carbodiimide moiety ( NCN ) was found to be unstable at pH 4, but stable when the pH of the dispersion was increased to 8, using NaHCO3 as the buffer. Survival of  NCN group against hydrolysis during the polymerization, and during storage in the dispersion, was enhanced by using EHMA as the comonomer (more hydrophobic) and the t‐butyl carbodiimide derivative. The t‐butyl group provides more steric hindrance to the hydrolysis reaction. A decrease in the reaction temperature from 80°C to 60°C was also found to increase the extent of  NCN group incorporation during emulsion polymerization. Under ideal conditions, more than 98% of the  NCN groups in the monomer feed are successfully incorporated into the latex. When these latex particles are mixed with a  COOH containing latex and allowed to dry, polymer diffusion leading to crosslinking occurs. Films annealed at 60°C reach a gel content of 60% in 10 h. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 855–869, 2000  相似文献

A series of SiO2/poly(styrene‐co‐butyl acrylate) nanocomposite microspheres with various morphologies (e.g., multicore–shell, normal core–shell, and raspberry‐like) were synthesized via miniemulsion polymerization. The results showed that the morphology of the composite latex particles was strongly influenced by the presence or absence of the soft monomer (butyl acrylate), the particle sizes of the silica, and the emulsifier concentrations. The incorporation of the soft monomer helped in forming the multicore–shell structure. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 3202–3209, 2006  相似文献

We describe the synthesis of a new polymerizable coumarin derivative, [6‐(β‐acryloxyethoxy)‐7‐isopropoxy‐4‐methyl coumarin ( 3 )], whose UV absorption spectrum significantly overlaps the emission spectrum of 9‐alkyl phenanthrene chromophore. This dye can serve several purposes in latex films. It can be a tracer for fluorescence microscopy experiments, or it can act as a donor or acceptor dye in nonradiative energy transfer experiments. Here we emphasize its role as an energy transfer acceptor in experiments with phenanthrene as the corresponding donor. Coumarin‐labeled poly(butyl methacrylate) latex dispersions could be synthesized by conventional batch emulsion polymerization with complete monomer conversion, complete dye incorporation, and uniform dye distribution. Attempts to extend this reaction to poly(vinyl acetate) copolymers failed because the dye inhibited monomer conversion. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composite latex particles based on homopolymers and graft‐copolymers composed of polynorbornene (PNB) and poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA) were synthesized in microemulsion conditions by simultaneous combination of two distinct methods of polymerization: Ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Only one commercial compound (first generation Grubbs catalyst) was used to initiate the ROMP of norbornene (NB) and activate the ATRP of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA). Well‐defined nanoparticles with hydrodynamic diameters smaller than 50 nm were prepared with original morphologies depending on the monomer compositions, the type of combination (polymer blend or graft‐copolymer), and the conditions of microemulsion polymerizations. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Magnetic ionic liquid monomers were synthesized and then polymerized to get magnetic polymer latexes and films. First, a series of 1‐vinyl‐3‐dodecyl‐imidazolium monomers having metal halides counter‐anions such as FeCl3Br?, CoCl2Br?, and MnCl2Br? were synthesized. These ionic liquid monomers were first homopolymerized to lead to magnetic poly(ionic liquids) and characterized. Secondly, magnetic latexes were synthesized by using the magnetic ionic liquids as surfmers (surfactant + monomer) in the emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate/n‐butyl acrylate. It was found that the powders obtained by freeze‐drying the latexes presented a paramagnetic behavior with weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the adjacent metal ions. Although the ratio of magnetic ionic liquid/monomer was only 2% these poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐butyl acrylate) powders and latexes responded to a magnetic field due to the surfmer paramagnetic nature. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the poly(NIPAAm–MAA)/Fe3O4 hollow latex particles were synthesized by three steps. The first step was to synthesize the poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐methylacrylate acid) (poly(MMA‐MAA)) copolymer latex particles by the method of soapless emulsion polymerization. Following the first step, the second step was to polymerize N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), MAA, and crosslinking agent (N,N'‐methylene‐bisacrylamide (MBA)) in the presence of poly(MMA‐MAA) latex particles to form the linear poly(MMA‐MAA)/crosslinking poly (NIPAAm‐MAA) core‐shell latex particles. After the previous processes, the core‐shell latex particles were heated in the presence of NH4OH to dissolve the linear poly(MMA‐MAA) core in order to form the poly(NIPAAm‐MAA) hollow latex particles. In the third step, Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions were introduced to bond with the ? COOH groups of MAA segments in the poly(NIPAAm‐MAA) hollow polymer latex particles. Further by a reaction with NH4OH and then Fe3O4 nanoparticles were generated in situ and the poly(NIPAAm‐MAA)/Fe3O4 magnetic composite hollow latex particles were formed. The concentrations of MAA, crosslinking agent (N,N'‐methylene bisacrylamide), and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were important factors to influence the morphology of hollow latex particles and lower critical solution temperature of poly(NIPAAm–MAA)/Fe3O4 magnetic composite hollow latex particles. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel amphiphilic star‐block copolymers, star poly(caprolactone)‐block‐poly[(2‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] and poly(caprolactone)‐block‐poly(methacrylic acid), with hyperbranched poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA–OH) as a core moiety were synthesized and characterized. The star‐block copolymers were prepared by a combination of ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, hyperbranched PHEMA–OH with 18 hydroxyl end groups on average was used as an initiator for the ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone to produce PHEMA–PCL star homopolymers [PHEMA = poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate); PCL = poly(caprolactone)]. Next, the hydroxyl end groups of PHEMA–PCL were converted to 2‐bromoesters, and this gave rise to macroinitiator PHEMA–PCL–Br for ATRP. Then, 2‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate or tert‐butyl methacrylate was polymerized from the macroinitiators, and this afforded the star‐block copolymers PHEMA–PCL–PDMA [PDMA = poly(2‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)] and PHEMA–PCL–PtBMA [PtBMA = poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate)]. Characterization by gel permeation chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance confirmed the expected molecular structure. The hydrolysis of tert‐butyl ester groups of the poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate) blocks gave the star‐block copolymer PHEMA–PCL–PMAA [PMAA = poly(methacrylic acid)]. These amphiphilic star‐block copolymers could self‐assemble into spherical micelles, as characterized by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Living‐radical polymerization of acrylates were performed under emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) conditions using latexes prepared by a nanoprecipitation technique previously employed and optimized for the polymerization of styrene. A macroinitiator of poly(n‐butyl acrylate) prepared under bulk ATRP was dissolved in acetone and precipitated in an aqueous solution of Brij 98 to preform latex particles, which were then swollen with monomer and heated. Various monomers (i.e. n‐butyl acrylate, styrene, and tert‐butyl acrylate) were used to swell the particles to prepare homo‐ and block copolymers from the poly(n‐butyl acrylate) macroinitiator. Under these conditions latexes with a relatively good colloidal stability were obtained. Furthermore, amphiphilic block copolymers were prepared by hydrolysis of the tert‐butyl groups and the resulting block copolymers were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The bulk morphologies of the polystyrene‐b‐poly(n‐butyl acrylate) and poly(n‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(acrylic acid) copolymers were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diels–Alder click reaction was successfully applied for the preparation of 3‐arm star polymers (A3) using furan protected maleimide end‐functionalized polymers and trianthracene functional linking agent (2) at reflux temperature of toluene for 48 h. Well‐defined furan protected maleimide end‐functionalized polymers, poly (ethylene glycol), poly(methyl methacrylate), and poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) were obtained by esterification or atom transfer radical polymerization. Obtained star polymers were characterized via NMR and GPC (refractive index and triple detector detection). Splitting of GPC traces of the resulting polymer mixture notably displayed that Diels–Alder click reaction was a versatile and a reliable route for the preparation of A3 star polymer. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic graft copolymers consisting of monomeric units of poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether acrylate, lauryl or stearyl methacrylate, and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate were synthesized and characterized. The effectiveness of these poly(ethylene glycol)‐containing graft copolymers in stabilizing styrene emulsion polymerization was evaluated. The polymerization rate (Rp) increases with increasing graft copolymer concentration, initiator concentration, or temperature. At a constant graft copolymer concentration, Rp increases, and the amount of coagulum decreases with the increasing hydrophilicity of graft copolymers. The polymerization system does not follow Smith–Ewart case II kinetics. The desorption of free radicals out of latex particles plays an important role in the polymerization kinetics. The overall activation energy and the activation energy for the radical desorption process are 85.4 and 34.3 kJ/mol, respectively. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The poly(HEMA‐co‐MMA‐g‐PMMA) graft copolymer was prepared with a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) macromonomer, 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and methyl methacrylate (MMA), and its application as a dispersant for the nonaqueous phase dispersion polymerization of polystyrene (PST) was investigated. Monodisperse PST particles were obtained with two‐dimensionally tailored graft copolymers, with the number of grafted chains controlled and the polar component (HEMA) in the backbone chains balanced. As for the reactor, a stirred vessel with moderate agitation yielded uniform polymer particles, whereas sealed glass ampules with an overturning motion yielded broader size distributions. Increasing the polarity of the solvent in the continuous phase yielded smaller polymer particles with a gradual deterioration of monodispersity. Uniform polymer particles with a coefficient of variation of less than 6% were obtained up to 30 wt % solid contents. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel structured latex particles with interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) cores and glassy SAN shells were developed in an attempt to investigate the feasibility of these polymers as both toughening and damping agents in thermoplastics. The IPN cores were composed of one impact part (polybutadiene based) and one damping part (acrylic based, with Tg around +10°C). The particle morphologies of these polymers were determined by TEM. The glass transitions and mechanical behavior of the polymers were characterized from DMS. The effect of different components on the final core/shell particle morphologies and mechanical properties was studied. The mechanical behavior of core/shell particles with IPN cores was also compared with that of separate core/shell and multilayered core/shell particles. In addition, normal core/shell synthesis (rubbery part first then the glassy part) and inverted core/shell synthesis (glassy part first then the rubbery part) were performed to provide another access for morphology control. It was found that the core/shell latex particles with poly(butyl acrylate) based copolymers are more miscible than poly(ethylhexyl methacrylate)-based copolymers. The high grafting efficiency of poly(butyl acrylate) plays an important role in governing phase miscibility. The latex particles synthesized by the inverted core/shell mode showed higher miscibility than the normal synthesized ones. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The pH‐responsive amphiphilic A2B2 miktoarm star block copolymer, poly(acrylic acid)2‐poly(vinyl acetate)2 [(PAA)2(PVAc)2], with controlled molecular weight and well‐defined structure was successfully synthesized via combination of single‐electron transfer‐mediated living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization methods. First, the precursor two‐armed poly(t‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA)2 functionalized with two xanthate groups was prepared by SET‐LRP of t‐butyl acrylate in acetone at 25 °C using the novel tetrafunctional bromoxanthate (Xanthate2‐Br2) as an Iniferter (initiator‐transfer agent‐terminator) agent. The polymerization behavior showed typical LRP natures by the first‐order polymerization kinetics and the linear dependence of molecular weight of the polymer on the monomer conversion. Second, the A2B2 miktoarm star block copolymer (PtBA)2(PVAc)2 was prepared by RAFT polymerization of VAc using (PtBA‐N3)2(Xanthate)2 obtained as the macro‐RAFT agent. Finally, the pH‐sensitive A2B2 amphiphilic miktoarm star block copolymer poly(acrylic acid)2‐poly(vinyl acetate)2 ((PAA)2(PVAc)2) was obtained by selectively cleavage of t‐butyl esters of (PtBA)2(PVAc)2. All the miktoarm star block copolymers were characterized by GPC, 1H‐NMR, and FT‐IR spectra. The self‐assembly behaviors of the amphiphilic A2B2 miktoarm block copolymers (PAA)2(PVAc)2 were also investigated by transmission electron microscopy. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) macromonomer is used as a compatibilizing agent in a poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA)/PMMA core/shell latex system. The incorporation of the PMMA macromonomer was achieved by copolymerizing it with BA monomer using miniemulsion polymerization. PBA seed latex was also synthesized without the macromonomer present to compare the compatibilizing effects with the PMMA macromonomer. The second stage methyl methacrylate monomer was added semi-continuously to the PBA seed latexes under monomer-starved conditions. Solid-state 13C-NMR [H]T1ρ relaxation studies were used to determine the effect of PMMA compatibilizer on these PBA/PMMA core/shell latex interphase regions. The thickness of the interphase of the core/shell particles prepared with and without the PMMA macromonomer compatibilizing agent are calculated to be in the range of 15–16 nm and 10–12 nm, respectively. Electron microscopy revealed that the seed latex prepared with the PMMA macromonomer achieved a more uniform coverage with the second stage PMMA polymer as compared to the latex synthesized without the compatibilizing agent present. It is concluded that the PMMA macromonomer is effective in increasing the thickness of the interphase region and also the amount of interfacial PMMA. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The synthesis of A2B2 heteroarm stars, where A is either polyisoprene (PI) or polybutadiene (PB) and B is either poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) has been achieved using living anionic polymerization. Following polymerization of the diene in hexane by sec‐BuLi, the solvent was changed to THF and the living chains were linked in pairs – without loss of anionic reactivity – using 1,2‐bis[4‐(1‐phenylethenyl)]ethane (EPEB). Star synthesis was completed by the addition of MMA or BMA monomer at −78°C. The diblocks were prepared by sequential polymerization. The resulting stereochemistries were those of greatest interest from a practical standpoint, i.e., PI or PB with a high 1,4‐content (which is highly elastic) and syndiotactic PMMA (which has a high Tg).  相似文献

Amphiphilic block copolymers of poly(acrylic acid‐b‐butyl acrylate) were prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization in a one‐pot reaction. These copolymers were characterized by NMR, static and dynamic light scattering, tensiometry, and size exclusion chromatography. The aggregation characteristics of the copolymers corresponded to those theoretically predicted for a star micelle. In a butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate emulsion polymerization, low amounts of these copolymers could stabilize latices with solid contents up to 50%. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Salicin was modified to monoacetals and diacetals with bromoester groups (fBr = 4 and 6) initiating atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). These glucoinitiators were used to synthesize 4‐ and 6‐arm star copolymers of tert‐butyl methacrylate (tBMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) with different arm polymerization degree (DParm = 13 ? 79), and composition (25–75 mol % of tBMA). The transformation of hydrophobic stars into amphiphilics by acidolysis of tert‐butyl groups resulted in copolymers with various contents of hydrophilic fraction based on methacrylic acid (MAA) units (13–75 mol %), which were labeled with fluorescein amine (FA) for the future studies of targeted internalization. The UV spectroscopy and fluorescence measurements of the prepared copolymers confirmed the incorporation of fluorophore moieties (1–14 FA labeled units as max. 5% of total MAA units). The solution properties of star polyacids observed by DLS in a function of a pH show a specific behavior related to the interchain/intrachain interactions yielding particles with diameter sizes in the range from 3 to 15 nm, which can be significantly increased to 180–270 nm by addition of NaCl. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
