We successfully prepared a series of transparent materials with semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (semi‐IPNs) from castor‐oil‐based polyurethane (PU) and benzyl starch (BS). The miscibility, morphology, and properties of the semi‐IPN films were investigated with attenuated total reflection/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, electron spin resonance (ESR), ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, and tensile testing. The results revealed that the semi‐IPN films had good or certain miscibility with BS concentrations of 5–70 wt % because of the strong intermolecular interactions between PU and BS. With an increase in the concentration of BS, the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the semi‐IPN materials increased. The ESR data confirmed that the segment volume of PU in the semi‐IPNs increased with the addition of BS; that is, the chain stiffness increased as a result of strong interactions between PU and BS macromolecules. It was concluded that starch derivatives containing benzyl groups in the side chains more easily penetrated the PU networks to form semi‐IPNs than those containing aliphatic groups, and this led to improved properties. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The peculiarities of segmental dynamics over the temperature range of ?140 to 180 °C were studied in polyurethane‐poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (PU‐PHEMA semi‐IPNs) with two‐phase, nanoheterogeneous structure. The networks were synthesized by the sequential method when the PU network was obtained from poly(oxypropylene glycol) (PPG) and adduct of trimethylolpropane (TMP) and toluylene diisocyanate (TDI), and then swollen with 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate monomer with its subsequent photopolymerization. PHEMA content in the semi‐IPNs varied from 10 to 57 wt %. Laser‐interferometric creep rate spectroscopy (CRS), supplemented with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), was used for discrete dynamic analysis of these IPNs. The effects of anomalous, large broadening of the PHEMA glass transition to higher temperatures in comparison with that of neat PHEMA, despite much lower Tg of the PU constituent, and the pronounced heterogeneity of glass transition dynamics were found in these networks. Up to 3 or 4 overlapping creep rate peaks, characterizing different segmental dynamics modes, have been registered within both PU and PHEMA glass transitions in these semi‐IPNs. On the whole, the united semi‐IPN glass transition ranged virtually from ?60 to 160 °C. As proved by IR spectra, some hybridization of the semi‐IPN constituents took place, and therefore the effects observed could be properly interpreted in the framework of the notion of “constrained dynamics.” The peculiar segmental dynamics in the semi‐IPNs studied may help in developing advanced biomedical, damping, and membrane materials based thereon. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, semi‐interpenetrating gels of poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) and methylcellulose were successfully synthesized by using the Frontal Polymerization (FP) technique. The gels were obtained in the presence of dimethyl sulfoxide and trihexyltetradecylphosphonium persulfate, as polymerization solvent and radical initiator, respectively, hence avoiding the formation of bubbles during polymerization. Then, some of the gels containing dimethyl sulfoxide were thoroughly washed with water, hence obtaining the corresponding hydrogels. The effects of the ratio between poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) and methylcellulose, the amount of crosslinker and solvent medium (i.e., dimethyl sulfoxide and water) were thoroughly studied, assessing the influence of temperature and velocity of FP fronts on the glass transition temperature values (dried samples), on the swelling behavior and on the dynamic‐mechanical properties (gels swollen both in water and dimethyl sulfoxide). © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel polyacrylamide‐based hydrogels containing 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate and/or tetraethoxy silane were synthesized by means of frontal polymerization, using ammonium persulfate as initiator, N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide as crosslinking agent and dimethyl sulfoxide as solvent. The obtained samples were treated at pH of 2 or 5 to induce the sol–gel reaction and evaluate their swelling behavior in the conditions. The occurrence of this reaction was assessed by solid‐state NMR. Moreover, the thermal properties of the dry materials were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis, and their water‐contact angles were measured. It was found that the amount of Si affects the extent of swelling and the hydrophilicity of the resulting materials. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A novel poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA)/PNIPA interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) was synthesized and characterized. In comparison with conventional PNIPA hydrogels, the shrinking rate of the IPN hydrogel increased when gels, swollen at 20 °C, were immersed in 50 °C water. The phase‐transition temperature of the IPN gel remained unchangeable because of the same chemical constituent in the PNIPA gel. The reswelling kinetics were slower than those of the PNIPA hydrogel because of the higher crosslinking density of the IPN hydrogel. The IPN hydrogel had better mechanical strength because of its higher crosslinking density and polymer volume fraction. The release behavior of 5‐fluorouracil (5‐Fu) from the IPN hydrogel showed that, at a lower temperature, the release of 5‐Fu was controlled by the diffusion of water molecules in the gel network. At a higher temperature, 5‐Fu inside the gel could not diffuse into the medium after a burst release caused by the release of the drug on the surface of the gel. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel polyesterurethane/poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) interpenetrating networks (IPNs) with good shape‐memory properties were synthesized using solvent casting method. The star‐shaped oligo[(rac‐lactide)‐co‐glycolide] was coupled with isophorone diisocyanate to form a polyesterurethane network (PULG), and PEGDMA was photopolymerized to form another polyetheracrylate network. IPNs were transparent and gel content exceeded 92%. The values of strain fixity rate and strain recovery rate were above 93%. PULG and PEGDMA networks in IPNs were amorphous and did not show any characteristic diffraction peaks in X‐ray diffraction spectra. Only one glass transition temperature (Tg) of the IPNs between Tg of PEGDMA and PULG was observed, which was proportional to PEGDMA content. PULG and PEGDMA networks were miscible when PEGDMA content was below 50 wt %. The hydrophilicity, transition temperatures, and mechanical properties of IPNs could be conveniently adjusted through variation of network compositions to match the promising potential clinical or medical applications. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Simultaneous interpenetrating polymer networks (SINs) based on epoxy/poly(n-butyl acrylate) systems were synthesized at 120°C. The polymerization kinetics were studied both in situ by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT–IR). Three key events occurred during the polymerization, namely the gelation of the network I, gelation of the network II, and phase separation of one polymer from the other. Thus, metastable phase diagrams describing the relations between the three events were constructed. Three-dimensional tetrahedrons characterizing the four-component system (the two monomers and the two polymers) allow the visualization of these three key events and also define some critical points, for example, the loci of the points where simultaneous gelation of the two networks occurs. The inside of the tetrahedron was also investigated using partially reacted model compounds. These tetrahedrons can be used as guidelines for setting up a synthesis strategy leading to desired morphologies. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Three series of semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks, based on crosslinked poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPA) and 1 wt % nonionic or ionic (cationic and anionic) linear polyacrylamide (PAAm), were synthesized to improve the mechanical properties of PNIPA gels. The effect of the incorporation of linear polymers into responsive networks on the temperature‐induced transition, swelling behavior, and mechanical properties was studied. Polymer networks with four different crosslinking densities were prepared with various molar ratios (25:1 to 100:1) of the monomer (N‐isopropyl acrylamide) to the crosslinker (methylenebisacrylamide). The hydrogels were characterized by the determination of the equilibrium degree of swelling at 25 °C, the compression modulus, and the effective crosslinking density, as well as the ultimate hydrogel properties, such as the tensile strength and elongation at break. The introduction of cationic and anionic linear hydrophilic PAAm into PNIPA networks increased the rate of swelling, whereas the presence of nonionic PAAm diminished it. Transition temperatures were significantly affected by both the crosslinking density and the presence of linear PAAm in the hydrogel networks. Although anionic PAAm had the greatest influence on increasing the transition temperature, the presence of nonionic PAAm caused the highest dimensional change. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks reinforced with cationic and nonionic PAAm exhibited higher tensile strengths and elongations at break than PNIPA hydrogels, whereas the presence of anionic PAAm caused a reduction in the mechanical properties. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the feasibility of frontal polymerization (FP) as an alternative and convenient technique for the preparation of semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks made of methyl cellulose (MC) and cross‐linked polyacrylamide (PAAm) is demonstrated. FP was performed in water and glycerol, as largely available, nontoxic solvents. Although FP occurred in both media, differences were found by comparing the samples made in the two solvents. In particular, those prepared in water are characterized by larger inhomogeneity and less reproducibility, thus accounting for the boiling effects that influence propagating polymerization fronts when water was used. The effects of the ratio among MC and PAAm, the amount of cross‐linker and solvent medium were studied in terms of influence on temperature and velocity of FP fronts, glass transition temperature (dried samples), swelling behavior, dynamic‐mechanical properties (gels swollen in both water or glycerol), and tensile behavior. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thermal decomposition kinetics of polyurethane/polyethyl acrylate interpenetrating polymer networks (PU/PEA IPN) were studied by means of thermogravimetry and derivative thermogravimetry (TG-DTG), and compared with those of polyurethane (PU) and polyethyl acrylate (PEA). The decomposition temperature (T i) of PU/PEA IPN was found to be higher thanT i of PEA, but lower thanT i of PU. Thermal decomposition kinetic parameters,n andE, estimated using Coats-Redfern method, are found for PU/PEA IPN, PU and PEA to be 1.6, 1.9 and 1.1, and 196.6, 258.6 and 139.2 kJ mol–1, respectively. The results show that PU/PEA IPN is neither a simple mixture of PU and PEA nor a copolymer of them. The mechanism of thermal decomposition of PU/PEA IPN is different from those of PU and PEA. The special network in PU/PEA IPN effectually protects weak bonds in the molecular chain of PU and PEA.We express our thanks to Dr. Yaxiong Xie and Zhiyuong Ren for their help in this work,  相似文献

The effects of compatibilizing additives (monomethacrylic ester of ethylene glycol (MEG) and oligo-urethane-dimethacrylate (OUDM)) on the kinetics of interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) formation based on cross-linked polyurethane and linear polystyrene and its influence on the microphase separation, viscoelastic and thermophysical properties have been investigated. It was established, that various amounts (3-10 mass%) of the additive MEG and 20 mass% OUDM introduced into the initial reaction system prevent microphase separation in the IPN. In the course of the reaction the system undergoes no phase separation up to the end of reaction, as follows from the light scattering data. The viscoelastic properties of modified IPN are changed in such a way that instead of two relaxation maxima characteristic of phase-separated system, only one relaxation maximum is observed, what is result of the formation of compatible IPN system. The position of this relaxation transition depends on the system composition and on the reaction conditions.  相似文献

Nanostructure, glass transition dynamics and elastic properties were studied in the 3D nanodiamond‐containing composites based on polyurethane‐poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (PU‐PHEMA semi‐IPNs), neat PU or PHEMA matrices. Nanodiamond (ND) content in the nanocomposites varied from 0.25 to 3 wt %. Combined differential scanning calorimetry/ laser‐interferometric creep rate spectroscopy/atomic force microscopy approach was utilized. A large impact of small 3D ND additives on PU‐PHEMA networks' dynamics and properties was revealed under conditions when an average inter‐particle distance L exceeds by far gyration radius Rg. The pronounced heterogeneity of glass transitions' dynamics and two opposite effects were observed. The main effect was a strong suppression of PHEMA glass transition dynamics at 90–180 °C, with the enhancement of creep resistance and threefold to sixfold increasing modulus of elasticity. The peculiarly crosslinked structure of nanocomposites, due to double covalent hybridization, resulted in low rheological percolation threshold, and a synergistic effect in dynamics was observed. Less pronounced effect of accelerating dynamics in the temperature region between β‐ and α‐transitions in PHEMA was associated with dynamics in domains with loosened molecular packing. The distinct physical limit for “anomalous” decreasing Tg is predicted in terms of the notion of the common segmental nature of α‐ and β‐relaxations. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Organic–inorganic hybrid semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) gels containing polyfluorenes (PFs) are synthesized by hydrosilylation reaction of joint and rod molecules in toluene, where PFs are poly(9,9‐dihexylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl) (PF6) or, poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl) (PF8), joint molecules are 1,3,5,7‐tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (TMCTS), or 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15‐octakis(dimethylsilyloxy)pentacyclo‐[9,5,1,1,1,1]octasilsesquioxane (POSS), and rod molecules are 1,5‐hexadiene (HD) or 1,9‐decadiene (DD). The semi‐IPN gels containing low molecular weight PF6 show higher photoluminescence efficiency (?g) than the toluene solution of PF6L (?s). The semi‐IPN gels composed of long rod molecule of DD and cubic joint molecule of POSS show the most effective increase in the emission intensity. The emission intensity of PF6L increases as formation of the network in the POSS‐DD semi‐IPN gel. The POSS‐DD semi‐IPN gels containing high molecular weight PF6 and PF8 also show the increase of emission intensity than those of the toluene solutions. The semi‐IPN synthesized in cyclohexane show syneresis and phase separation between network structure and PF chains. The semi‐IPN gels containing PF8 show emission peaks at 450 and 470 nm derived from β‐sheet structure of PF8. A systematic study clears correlation between emission property and network structure and/or composition of semi‐IPN gels. The semi‐IPN gels provide emissive self‐standing soft materials with high efficiency and in a narrow wavelength range emission. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (semi‐IPNs) were prepared from linear polyurethane (PUR) and polycyanurate (PCN) networks. Wide‐angle X‐ray scattering measurements showed that the IPNs were amorphous, and differential scanning calorimetry and small‐angle X‐ray scattering measurements suggested that they were macroscopically homogeneous. Here we report the results of detailed studies of the molecular mobility in IPNs with PUR contents greater than or equal to 50% via broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (10−2–109 Hz, 210–420 K) and thermally stimulated depolarization current techniques (77–320 K). Both techniques gave a single α relaxation in the IPNs, shifting to higher temperatures in isochronal plots with increasing PCN content, and provided measures for the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) close to and following the calorimetric Tg. The dielectric response in the IPNs was dominated by PUR. The segmental α relaxation, associated with the glass transition and, to a lesser extent, the local secondary β and γ relaxations were analyzed in detail with respect to the timescale, the shape of the response, and the relaxation strength. The α relaxation became broader with increasing PCN content, the broadening being attributed to concentration fluctuations. Fragility decreased in the IPNs in comparison with PUR, the kinetic free volume at Tg increased, and the relaxation strength of the α relaxation, normalized to the same PUR content, increased. The results are discussed in terms of the formation of chemical bonds between the components, as confirmed by IR, and the reduced packing density of PUR chains in the IPNs. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polyurethane (PU) based on polyepichlorohydrin/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PECH/PMMA) interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) was synthesized by a simultaneous method. The effects of composition, hydroxyl group number of PECH, NCO/OH ratio and crosslinking agent content in IPNs were investigated in detail. Some other glycols, such as poly(ethylene glycol), poly(propylene glycol) and hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene, were also used to obtain PU/PMMA IPNs. The interpenetrating and fracture behaviors of the IPNs are explained briefly.  相似文献

In the present work, sequential interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) based on silicone and poly(2‐methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) were developed with improved protein resistance. The structure and morphology of the IPNs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the IPNs exhibited heterogeneous morphology. The bulk properties such as water content, ion permeability, and mechanical strength of the IPNs were determined by gravimetric method, ionoflux measurement technique, and tensile tester, respectively. The surface characteristics of the IPNs were investigated by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle measurements. XPS analysis suggested that PMPC was present on the surface as well as in the bulk material. The IPNs possessed more hydrophilic surface than pristine silicone revealed by contact angle measurements. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a model protein to evaluate protein resistance by a bicinchoninic acid assay method. The result revealed that the protein adsorption on the IPNs was significantly reduced compared to pristine silicone. These results suggest that the IPNs based on silicone and PMPC may be developed as novel ophthalmic biomaterials. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Bismaleimide (BMI) resins with good thermal stability, fire resistance, low water absorption, and good retention of mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, especially in hot/wet environments, have attracted more attention in the electronic and aerospace industries. However, their relatively high dielectric constant limits their application in the aforementioned fields. In this work, a new promising approach is presented that consists of the formation of a self‐catalytic thermoset/thermoset interpenetrating polymer network. Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) based on modified BMI resin (BMI/DBA) and cyanate ester (b10) were synthesized via prepolymerization followed by thermal curing. The self‐catalytic curing mechanism of BMI/DBA‐CE IPN resin systems was examined by differential scanning calorimetry. The dielectric properties of the cured BMI/DBA‐CE IPN resin systems were evaluated by a dielectric analyzer and shown in dielectric properties‐temperature‐log frequency three‐dimensional plots. The effect of temperature and frequency on the dielectric constant of the cured BMI/DBA‐CE IPN resin systems is discussed. The composition effect on the dielectric constant of the cured IPN resin systems was analyzed on the basis of Maxwell's equation and rule of mixture. The obtained BMI/DBA‐CE IPN resin systems have the combined advantages of low dielectric constant and loss, high‐temperature resistance, and good processability, which have many applications in the microelectronic and aerospace industries. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New segmented polyurethanes with perfluoropolyether (PFPE) and poly(ethylene oxide) blocks were synthesized from a fluorinated macrodiol mixed with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in different ratios as a soft segment, 2,4‐toluene diisocyanate as a hard segment, and ethylene glycol as a chain extender. Fourier transform infrared, NMR, and thermal analysis [differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)] were used to characterize the structures of these copolymers. The copolymer films were immersed in a liquid electrolyte (1 M LiClO4/propylene carbonate) to form gel‐type electrolytes. The ionic conductivities of these polymer electrolytes were investigated through changes in the copolymer composition and content of the liquid electrolyte. The relative molar ratio of PFPE and PEG in the copolymer played an important role in the conductivity and the capacity to retain the liquid electrolyte solution. The copolymer with a 50/50 PFPE/PEG ratio, having the lowest decomposition temperature shown by TGA, exhibited the highest ionic conductivity and lowest activation energy for ion transportation. The conductivities of these systems were about 10?3 S cm?1 at room temperature and 10?2 S cm?1 at 70 °C; the films immersed in the liquid electrolyte with an increase of 70 wt % were homogenous with good mechanical properties. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (semi‐IPNs) were prepared by reactions of 2,4‐tolylene diisocyanate (TDI) and hydroxy‐terminated 4‐arm star‐shaped l ‐lactide oligomers (H4LAOn's) with the degrees of polymerization of lactate unit per one arm, n = 3, 5, and 10 in the presence of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL). Morphologies, thermal, and mechanical properties of the TDI‐bridged H4LAOn (TH4LAOn)/PCL semi‐IPNs were evaluated by comparing with those of poly(l ‐lactide) (PLA)/PCL blends. Compatibility between the two components of the TH4LAOn/PCL semi‐IPN with a PCL content not more than 50 wt % was much better than those of the PLA/PCL blends with the same PCL content. All the TH4LAOn networks were substantially amorphous and their tan δ peak or glass transition temperatures increased with decreasing n value. Most of the semi‐IPNs did not show clear glass transition temperature related to both the components. Tensile toughness and elongation at break for all the TH4LAOn/PCL semi‐IPNs were much higher than those for the PLA/PCL blends with the same PCL content. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A method for the synthesis of a new silicone hydrogel as a biphase material for soft contact lenses is considered. The method is based on the synthesis of sequential interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) and includes the following stages: (1) cross‐linked silicone synthesis by the reaction of vinyl‐ and hydride‐containing oligosiloxanes; (2) silicone network saturation with vinyl acetate and cross‐linking monomer followed by UV‐initiated polymerization to form an IPN comprising the silicone and cross‐linked poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) network; (3) PVAc network alcoholysis with methanol to obtain silicone hydrogels comprising the silicone and cross‐linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAl). A study of hydrophilic, optical, mechanical, and structural features of the silicone hydrogels showed that optical transparency is achieved for materials with the highest density of silicone network cross‐linking where the size of IPN structural units does not exceed 100 nm. The water content in hydrophilic networks of silicone hydrogel is found to be below the values typical of cross‐linked PVAl, leading to non‐additivity of IPN mechanical properties. Indeed, the elasticity moduli (E) of the hydrophilic and silicone networks are 0.4–0.7 and 0.7–1.8 MPa, respectively, whereas for some IPN this value reaches 3.0 MPa. The optimal parameters of synthesis providing the reduction of E to 0.8–1.6 MPa without deterioration of the required performance characteristics (optical transparency 90–92%, water content 20–39 wt%) are determined.
