New polymers for second‐order nonlinear optical (NLO) applications were synthesized and characterized. They were distinguished by the presence of chromophore groups, with various molecular hyperpolarizability values, used as pendants on substantially rigid backbones. The polymers were prepared through the reaction of tolylene‐2,4‐diisocyanate, or a suitable alkyloxyphthaloyl dichloride, with the N,N‐diethanol‐4‐(phenyl) group azo‐linked to a nitrofluorenone, nitrostilbene, nitrooxadiazole, or nitrothiadiazole moiety. The polymers exhibited good thermal stability, high glass‐transition temperatures, and an absence of crystallinity. The second‐order NLO properties of thin, transparent poled films, prepared by spin coating and thermal corona poling, were investigated for some of the polymers. The second harmonic coefficients, ranging between 18 and 25 pm/V, depended more on the alignment of the chromophore groups along the direction of the poling field than on their molecular hyperpolarizability. The temporal stability of the NLO properties of the polymers was also investigated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 3013–3022, 2004  相似文献

A series of photocrosslinkable, side‐chain, second‐order nonlinear optical (NLO) poly(ester imide)s (PEIs) based on a chromophore‐containing dianhydride, 2,2′‐{4‐[(4‐nitrophenyl)‐azo]phenyl}iminobis(ethyl benzene‐1,2‐dicarboxylic acid anhydride‐4‐carboxylate), benzophenone‐3,3′,4,4′‐tetracarboxylic dianhydride, and 4,4′‐diamino‐3,3′‐dimethyl diphenylmethane were prepared. The resulting PEIs exhibited many useful physical characteristics, such as good organosolubility, excellent film‐forming properties, high glass‐transition temperatures (186–229 °C), and high thermal decomposition temperatures. The electrooptic coefficient value of PEI3 at 650 nm was 11.5 pm/V, and high long‐term stability of the NLO chromophore alignment in the poled PEI3 film at 120 °C was observed. The temporal stability of the dipole orientation at 150 °C was further enhanced by ultraviolet irradiation because of photocrosslinking. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A thermal stable aromatic polyimide (PI) with side‐chain second‐order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores has been developed. The PI was prepared by the ring‐opening polyaddition of 4,4′‐(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride with a new diamine having two N‐ethyl‐N‐[4‐[(6‐chlorobenzothiazol‐2‐yl)diazenyl]phenyl]‐2‐aminoethanol units as the NLO chromophore, followed by poling during or after the thermal imidization process. The resulting PI had number and weight‐average molecular weights (Mn, Mw) of 25,000 and 80,000, respectively, and a relatively high glass transition temperature of 180°C. The second harmonic coefficient (d33) of PI at the wavelength of 1.064 μm was 138 pm/V (329.6 × 10−9 esu) and remained unchanged at elevated temperatures. The corona poling process of the NLO‐substituted poly(amic acid) to the PI was also studied in detail by measuring the second harmonic generation (SHG) from the polymer films. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The frontal polymerization (FP) of bisphenol A ethoxylate diacrylate (BPAEDA) was carried with and without the presence of two different azobenzene comonomers by means of an external heating source. The first azomonomer (MDR‐1) is a derivative of disperse red‐1, N‐ethyl‐N‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐4‐(4‐nitrophenylazo)aniline, whereas the second (E)‐2‐(4‐((4‐nitrophenyl)diazenyl)phenyl)‐5,8,11‐trioxa‐2‐azatridecan‐13‐yl methacrylate (4PEGMAN) comes from the azo‐dye N‐methyl‐N‐{4‐[(E)‐(4‐nitrophenyl)diazenyl]phenyl}‐N‐(11‐hydroxy‐3,6,9‐trioxaundecas‐1‐yl) amine. In this work, an ionic liquid trihexyltetradecylphosphonium persulfate was used as initiator. This compound produced stable propagating polymerization fronts with good velocities and moderate maximum temperature values. Moreover, this initiator prevented bubble formation and was found to be the most efficient when it was used in lower amounts with respect to other initiators, such as benzoyl peroxide, 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile, aliquat persulfate®, and tetrabutylphosphonium persulfate. The thermal properties of the obtained polymers and copolymers were determined by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The nonlinear optical (NLO) characterizations of the developed BPAEDA/MDR‐1 and BPAEDA/4PEGMAN copolymers were performed according to the Z‐Scan technique in film samples prepared by classical polymerization. It has been proven that samples with higher 4PEGMAN content (0.26 mol %) exhibited outstanding cubic NLO‐activity with positive NLO‐refractive coefficients in the promising range of n2 = +3.2 × 10?4 esu. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We synthesized new nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores containing a 3,5‐bis(3,5‐bisbenzyloxy‐benzyloxy)‐benzoate dendron. Tricyanopyrroline (TCP)‐based chromophores were designed and prepared by virtue of its strong electron withdrawing property. A soluble polyimide containing 6‐({4‐[2‐(1‐allyl‐4‐cyano‐5‐dicyanomethylene‐2‐oxo‐2,5‐dihydro‐1H‐pyrrol‐3‐yl)‐vinyl]‐phenyl}‐butyl‐amino)‐hexanoyl group in the side chain was also prepared as an NLO active host polymer. A benzoate dendron was tethered at two different binding positions of the chromophore to yield two different guest molecules. Thin‐film composites of these dendronized chromophores dissolved in the NLO active polyimide host were employed to fabricate the electro‐optic (EO) samples. The EO properties of new NLO polyimides containing dendronized chromophores were compared with those of the sample with nondendronized plain chromophores. The effect of a bulky dendron on the EO properties was investigated using an in situ reflection technique. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 5064–5076, 2008  相似文献

Methacrylate polymers containing different molar contents of nonlinear optical (NLO) active molecular segments based on 2‐[4‐(N‐methyl,N‐hydroxyethylamino)phenylazo]‐phenyl‐6‐nitrobenzoxazole chromophores were synthesized, and their phase behavior and second‐order NLO properties were investigated. Polymers containing 6–17 mol % chromophore segments allowed the preparation of amorphous and optically clear thin films. Some mesomorphic structuration was exhibited by a polymer with 33 mol % chromophoric units. However, this feature did not prevent the possibility of investigating the NLO properties. Nonlinear resonance‐enhanced d33 coefficients were determined by second harmonic generation experiments on spin‐coated, corona‐poled thin films at λ = 1064 nm. Values ranging from 40 to 60 pm/V were measured with increasing chromophore molar contents. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 1841–1847, 2003  相似文献

A simple and generally applicable new synthetic method to prepare second‐order nonlinear optical (NLO) polyimides has been developed. In this approach, side‐chain‐substituted polyimides were synthesized via isocyanato‐terminated prepolymers prepared directly from NLO chromophore‐containing diols Disperse Red 19. Using this technique, the tedious synthesis of the classical diamine monomers and harsh imidization process associated with polyamic acid prepolymers are avoided. The resulting polymers possessed good solubility and high glass‐transition (171–211 °C) and thermal‐decomposition temperatures. The polymers also exhibited excellent film‐forming properties, and good optical‐quality films were easily obtained by spin coating. The second‐order NLO activities of the polymer films were also studied, and several factors that might determine the growth of the second‐order NLO activity were proposed. The polymers obtained exhibit a large second‐order NLO activity (34–52.5 pm/V at 1064 nm). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 2189–2195, 2001  相似文献

Thermotropic liquid‐crystalline (LC) semirigid polyesters based on three terphenyl analogues of 1,3,4‐thiadiazole (2,5‐diphenyl‐1,3,4‐thiadiazole)s (DPTD) linking undecamethyleneoxy chain at different substituted positions were synthesized from three disubstituted (4,4′‐, 3,4′‐, and 3,3′‐) dioxydiundecanols of DPTD and four diesters, and the relationships between polymer structures and LC and optical properties were investigated. DSC measurements, texture observations, and wide‐angle X‐ray analyses revealed that the polymers composed of DPTD moiety having a more linear molecular structure and 1,4‐phenylene unit or short aliphatic chain tend to exhibit LC smectic C and/or A phases. The following observations were made: (1) the emergence of smectic C and/or A phases in all the polymers on the basis of 4,4′‐disubstituted DPTD, (2) formation of enantiotropic smectic C and/or A phases in the polymers containing a 1,4‐phenylene unit in the main chain, (3) formation of a more stable smectic C phase in the polymers having a short aliphatic [(CH2)4] chain, and (4) a decrease of the mesomorphic property of the polyesters in the order of 4,4′‐DPTD > 3,4′‐DPTD > 3,3′‐DPTD. Solution and solid‐state ultraviolet–visible and photoluminescent spectra indicated that all the polyesters display maximum absorbances and blue emissions arising from the DPTD moiety, whose peak maxima were shifted to lower wavelengths in the order of 4,4′‐DPTD > 3,4′‐DPTD > 3,3′‐DPTD as well as the aforementioned LC property. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the characterization of copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐propenoic acid, 2‐methyl‐, 2‐[[[[4‐methyl‐3‐[[(2‐methyl‐4‐nitrophenyl)amino]carbonyl]aminophenyl]carbonyl]oxy]ethyl ester (PAMEE) exhibiting nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The linear copolymer, poly(MMA‐co‐PAMEE), with a NLO chromophore incorporated into PAMME exhibits a high glass transition temperature of 131°C, as determined by DSC. The thin films of copolymers, which were cast on microscopic glass slides, were optically transparent, and the corona poled polymers produced relatively large and stable second harmonic generation (SHG) signals at room temperature. The nonlinear coefficient d33 of the crosslinked copolymer containing 30 wt % PAMEE was 30.8 pm/V. The SHG signal strength remained unchanged, even after 120 days, and exhibited excellent thermal stability at 65°C. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this article, a facile route was designed to prepare four new hyperbranched poly(arylene‐ethynylene)s containing azo‐chromophore moieties through one‐pot “A2+B3” approach via simple Sonogashira coupling reaction. The polymers were all soluble in organic solvents and demonstrated good nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, because of the three‐dimensional spatial isolation effect of these hyperbranched polymers. Due to the different B3‐type comonomer, the self‐assembly effect of pentafluoroaromatic in the interior of these polymers were different, leading to the different trends of the NLO activities. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel AB2‐type monomers such as 3,5‐bis(4‐methylolphenoxy)benzoic acid ( monomer 1 ), methyl 3,5‐bis(4‐methylolphenoxy) benzoate ( monomer 2 ), and 3,5‐bis(4‐methylolphenoxy)benzoyl chloride ( monomer 3 ) were synthesized. Solution polymerization and melt self‐polycondensation of these monomers yielded hydroxyl‐terminated hyperbranched aromatic poly(ether‐ester)s. The structure of these polymers was established using FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The molecular weights (Mw) of the polymers were found to vary from 2.0 × 103 to 1.49 × 104 depending on the polymerization techniques and the experimental conditions used. Suitable model compounds that mimic exactly the dendritic, linear, and terminal units present in the hyperbranched polymer were synthesized for the calculation of degree of branching (DB) and the values ranged from 52 to 93%. The thermal stability of the polymers was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis, which showed no virtual weight loss up to 200 °C. The inherent viscosities of the polymers in DMF ranged from 0.010 to 0.120 dL/g. End‐group modification of the hyperbranched polymer was carried out with phenyl isocyanate, 4‐(decyloxy)benzoic acid and methyl red dye. The end‐capping groups were found to change the thermal properties of the polymers such as Tg. The optical properties of hyperbranched polymer and the dye‐capped hyperbranched polymer were investigated using ultraviolet‐absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Main‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyurethanes were synthesized based on a high aspect ratio mesogenic diol (4‐{[4‐(6‐hydroxyhexyloxy)‐phenylimino]‐methyl}‐benzoic acid 4‐{[4‐(6‐hydroxyhexyloxy)‐phenylimino]‐methyl}‐phenyl ester) as a chain extender; polycaprolactone (PCL) diol soft segments of different number‐average molecular weights (530, 1250, or 2000); and different diisocyanates, including 1,4‐hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), 4,4′‐methylene bis(cyclohexyl isocyanate) (H12MDI), and 4,4′‐methylene bis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI). The structure of the polymers was confirmed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing microscopy measurements were carried out to examine the liquid‐crystalline and thermal properties of the polyurethanes, respectively. The mesogenic diol was partially replaced with 20–50 mol % PCL. A 20 mol % mesogen content was sufficient to impart a liquid crystalline property to all the polymers. The partial replacement of the mesogenic diol with PCL of various molecular weights, as well as the various diisocyanates, influenced the phase transitions and the occurrence of mesophase textures. Characteristic liquid‐crystalline textures were observed when a sufficient content of the mesogenic diol was present. Depending on the flexible spacer length and the mesogenic content, grained and threadlike textures were obtained for the HMDI and H12MDI series polymers, whereas the polyurethanes prepared from MDI showed only grained textures for all the compositions. The polymers formed brittle films and could not be subjected to tensile tests. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 1527–1538, 2002  相似文献

The synthesis of a new compound, 2‐[(4‐bromomethyl)phenyl]‐4,5‐dihydro‐4,4‐dimethyloxazole ( 1 ), and its utility in the synthesis of oxazoline‐functionalized polystyrene by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) methods are described. Aromatic oxazolyl‐functionalized polymers were prepared by the ATRP of styrene, initiated by ( 1 ) in the presence of copper(I) bromide/2,2′‐bipyridyl catalyst system, to afford the corresponding α‐oxazolyl‐functionalized polystyrene ( 2 ). The polymerization proceeded via a controlled free radical polymerization process to produce the corresponding α‐oxazolyl‐functionalized polymers with predictable number‐average molecular weights, narrow molecular weight distributions in high‐initiator efficiency reactions. Post‐ATRP chain end modification of α‐oxazolyl‐functionalized polystyrene ( 2 ) to form the corresponding α‐carboxyl‐functionalized polystyrene ( 3 ) was achieved by successive acid‐catalyzed hydrolysis and saponification reactions. The polymerization processes were monitored by gas chromatography analyses. The unimolecular‐functionalized initiator and functionalized polymers were characterized by thin layer chromatography, spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, and nonaqueous titration analysis. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have synthesized and characterized a new family of low melting all‐aromatic ester‐based liquid crystal oligomers end‐capped with reactive phenylethynyl end groups. In a consecutive, high‐temperature step, the reactive end groups were thermally activated and polymerization was initiated. This reactive oligomer approach allows us to synthesize liquid crystal thermosets with outstanding mechanical and thermal properties, which are superior to well‐known high‐performance polymers such as PPS and PEEK. We have modified an intractable LC formulation based on hydroquinone and terephthalic acid, with Mn = 1000, 5000, and 9000 g mol?1, and varied the backbone composition using isophthalic acid, resorcinol, 4‐hydroxy‐benzoic acid, 6‐hydroxy‐2‐naphthoic acid, and chlorohydroquinone. All fully cured polymers showed glass transition temperatures in the range of 164–275 °C, and high storage moduli at room temperature (~ 5 GPa) and elevated temperature (~ 2 GPa at 200 °C). All oligomers display nematic mesophases and in most cases, the nematic order is maintained after cure. Rheology experiments showed that the phenylethynyl end group undergoes predominantly chain extension below 340 °C and crosslinking above this temperature. Highly aligned fibers could be spun from the nematic melt, and we found that the order parameter 〈P2〉 was not affected by the chain extension and crosslink chemistry. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of main‐chain, thermotropic, liquid‐crystalline (LC), hydrogen‐bonded polymers or self‐assembled structures based on 4,4′‐bipyridyl as a hydrogen‐bond acceptor and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, such as adipic and sebacic acids, as hydrogen‐bond donors were prepared by a slow evaporation technique from a pyridine solution and were characterized for their thermotropic, LC properties with a number of experimental techniques. The homopolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic acid exhibited high‐order and low‐order smectic phases, and that with sebacic acid exhibited only a high‐order smectic phase. Like the homopolymer with adipic acid, the two copolymers of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (75/25 and 25/75) also exhibited two types of smectic phases. In contrast, the copolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (50/50), like the homopolymer with sebacic acid, exhibited only one high‐order smectic phase. Each of them, including the copolymers, had a broad temperature range of LC phases (36–51 °C). The effect of copolymerization for these hydrogen‐bonded polymers on the thermotropic properties was examined. Generally, copolymerization increased the temperature range of LC phases for these polymers, as expected, with a larger decrease in the crystal‐to‐LC transition than in the LC‐to‐isotropic transition. Additionally, it neither suppressed the formation of smectic phases nor promoted the formation of a nematic phase in these hydrogen‐bonded polymers, as usually observed in many thermotropic LC polymers. The thermal transitions for all of them, measured by differential scanning calorimetry, were well below their decomposition temperatures, as measured by thermogravimetric analysis, which were in the temperature range of 193–210 °C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers of 6‐[4‐(4′‐methoxyphenyl)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate with controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersities were prepared via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with 2‐(2‐cyanopropyl) dithiobenzoate as the RAFT agent. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed that the polymers produced via the RAFT process had a narrower thermal stability range of the liquid‐crystalline mesophase than the polymers formed via conventional free‐radical polymerization. In addition, a chain length dependence of this stability range was found. The generated RAFT polymers displayed optical textures similar to those of polymers produced via conventional free‐radical polymerization. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fluorinated copolyimides derived from 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA) with 4,4′‐oxydianline (ODA) and trifluoromethyl‐containing aromatic diamines have been synthesized and characterized. The trifluoromethyl‐containing diamines include 2,4‐diamino‐3′‐trifluoromethylazobenzene, 2,4‐diamino‐1‐[(4′‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) phenyl] aniline, 3,5‐diamino‐1‐[(4′‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) phenyl] benzamide, 3,5‐diamino‐1‐[(3′‐trifluoromethyl) phenyl] benzamide, 1,4‐bis(4′‐aminophenoxy)‐2‐(3′‐trifluoromethylphenyl) benzene, 3,5‐diaminobenzenetrifluoride, 4,4′‐diamino‐4″‐(p‐trifluoromethyl phenoxy) triphenylamine, and 4‐[(4′‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) phenyl]‐2,6‐bis(4″‐aminophenyl)pyridine. Strong and flexible copolyimide films, produced by casting the polyamic acid solution followed by thermal imidization, exhibited great thermal stability and high mechanical properties. The polyimides had an ultraviolet–visible absorption cutoff at 330–340 nm and pretilt angles as high as 20° for nematic liquid crystals, making them great potential candidates for advanced liquid‐crystal display applications. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this project, 2‐[N‐ethyl‐N‐[4‐[(4′‐nitrophenyl)azo]‐phenyl]amino]ethanol (Disperse Red‐I) was prepared by adding of (N‐ethyl‐2‐anilinoethanol) with the salt diazonium p‐nitroaniline. The main mesogenic liquid crystalline (LC) 2‐[N‐ethyl‐N‐[4‐[4′‐nitrophenyl)azo]‐phenyl]amino]ethyl‐3‐chloro propionate (Disperse Red‐II) was synthesized by reaction of disperse Red I and 3‐chloropropanoeic acid at the alkaline condition. Then 2‐anilinoethyl‐3‐chloropropionate‐{2‐[ethyl[4‐[(4′‐nitrophenyl)azo]phenyl]amino] ethanol}, (2AECP‐Red‐I) was prepared via reaction of disperse red‐II and 2‐anilinoethanol. On the other hand, poly 2‐anilinoethyl‐3‐chloropropionate‐{2‐[ethyl[4‐[(4′‐nitrophenyl)azo]phenyl]amino]ethanol} and poly(2AECP‐Red‐I) have been synthesized by polymerization of 2AECP‐Red‐I in two separate schemes. These include polymerization in the absence of electric field (EF) and polymerization under different EFs. A comparison of the results reveals that the polymer produced under electric field is more linear, regular in shape with high electrical conductivity, as well as good LC behavior with semectic texture. The resulted monomer and poly(2AECP‐Red‐I) are characterized by using Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet–visible and were studied by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Scanning electron microscopy images supported the formation of poly(2AECP‐Red‐I) and showed morphology feature and homogeneous structure on poly(2AECP‐Red‐I). Electrical conductivity of poly(2AECP‐Red‐I) has been studied by four‐point probe method. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Two conjugated main‐chain polymers consisting of heteroarene‐fused π‐conjuagted donor moiety alternating with 4,7‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (P1) or 2,5‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl) thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole (P2) units have been synthesized. They are intrinsically amorphous in nature and do not exhibit crystalline melting temperatures during thermal analysis. The effect of the fused rings on the thermal, optical, electrochemical, charge transport, and photovoltaic properties of these polymers has been investigated. The polymer (P1) containing 4,7‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5] thiadiazole has a broad absorption extending from 300 to 600 nm with optical bandgaps as low as 2.02 eV. The HOMO levels (5.42 to 5.29 eV) are more sensitive to the choice of acceptor. The polymers were employed to fabricate organic photovoltaic cells with methanofullerene [6,6]‐phenyl C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM). As a result, the polymer solar cell device containing P1 had the best preliminary results with an open‐circuit voltage of 0.61 V, a short‐circuit current density of 6.19 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.32, offering an overall power conversion efficiency of 1.21%. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
