Living anionic surface‐initiated polymerization on flat gold substrates has been conducted to create uniform homopolymer and diblock copolymer brushes. A 1,1‐diphenylethylene (DPE) self‐assembled monolayer was used as the immobilized precursor initiator. n‐BuLi was used to activate the DPE in tetrahydrofuran at –78 °C to initiate the polymerization of different monomers (styrene, isoprene, ethylene oxide, and methyl methacrylate). Poly(styrene) (PS) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in particular were first investigated as grafted homopolymers, followed by their copolymers, including poly(isoprene)‐b‐poly(methylmethacrylate) (PI‐b‐PMMA). A combined approach of spectroscopic (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, surface plasmon spectroscopy, ellipsometry, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and microscopic (atomic force microscopy) surface analysis was used to investigate the formation of the polymer brushes in polar solvent media. The chemical nature of the outermost layer of these brushes was studied by water contact angle measurements. The effect of the experimental conditions (solvent, temperature, initiator concentration) on the surface properties of the polymer brushes was also investigated. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A variety of polymer microspheres were successfully synthesized by the surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP) of monomers by using monodisperse polymer microsphere having benzyl halide moiety as a multifunctional polymeric initiator. First, a series of monodisperse polymer microsphere having benzyl chloride with variable monomer ratio (P(St‐DVB‐VBC)) were synthesized by the precipitation polymerization of styrene (St), divinylbenzene (DVB), and 4‐vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC). Next, hairy polymer microspheres were synthesized by the surface‐initiated ATRP of various monomers with P(St‐DVB‐VBC) microsphere as a multifunctional polymeric initiator. The hair length determined by the SEC analysis of free polymer was increased with the increase of M/I. These hairy polymer microspheres were characterized by SEM, FT‐IR, and Cl content measurements. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of a new compound, 2‐[(4‐bromomethyl)phenyl]‐4,5‐dihydro‐4,4‐dimethyloxazole ( 1 ), and its utility in the synthesis of oxazoline‐functionalized polystyrene by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) methods are described. Aromatic oxazolyl‐functionalized polymers were prepared by the ATRP of styrene, initiated by ( 1 ) in the presence of copper(I) bromide/2,2′‐bipyridyl catalyst system, to afford the corresponding α‐oxazolyl‐functionalized polystyrene ( 2 ). The polymerization proceeded via a controlled free radical polymerization process to produce the corresponding α‐oxazolyl‐functionalized polymers with predictable number‐average molecular weights, narrow molecular weight distributions in high‐initiator efficiency reactions. Post‐ATRP chain end modification of α‐oxazolyl‐functionalized polystyrene ( 2 ) to form the corresponding α‐carboxyl‐functionalized polystyrene ( 3 ) was achieved by successive acid‐catalyzed hydrolysis and saponification reactions. The polymerization processes were monitored by gas chromatography analyses. The unimolecular‐functionalized initiator and functionalized polymers were characterized by thin layer chromatography, spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, and nonaqueous titration analysis. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ester‐functional alkoxyamine 2,2‐dimethyl‐3‐(1‐(4‐(methoxycarbonyl)phenyl)ethoxy)‐4‐(4‐(methoxycarbonyl)phenyl)‐3‐azapentane ( 2 ) was efficiently synthesized for use as a functional initiator in nitroxide‐mediated polymerization. Two equivalents of 1‐(4‐(methoxycarbonyl)phenyl)ethyl radical were added across the double bond of 2‐methyl‐2‐nitrosopropane to form alkoxyamine 2 , which was found to control the polymerization of styrene, isoprene, and n‐butyl acrylate. The ester moieties were hydrolyzed for subsequent esterification with 1‐pyrenebutanol to form a dipyrene‐labeled initiator that was used to probe nitroxide end‐group fidelity after styrene polymerization. High retention of nitroxide was confirmed by UV‐vis studies over a range of monomer conversions. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 6342–6352, 2009  相似文献

The cobaloxime‐mediated catalytic‐chain‐transfer polymerization of styrene at 60 °C was studied with an emphasis on the effects of monomer purification and polymerization conditions. Commonly used purification methods, such as column chromatography and simple vacuum distillation, were not adequate for obtaining kinetic data to be used in mechanistic modeling. A purification regime involving inhibitor removal with basic alumina, followed by polymerization of the styrene in the presence of the cobaloxime and subsequent vacuum distillation, was found to be essential to this end. It was then possible to quantitatively investigate effects such as the initiator concentration and conversion dependencies of the apparent chain‐transfer constant that resulted from the occurrence of cobalt–carbon bond formation. A value of about 9 × 103 was found for the true chain‐transfer constant to cobaloxime boron fluoride, that is, its value in the absence of cobalt–carbon bond formation. Furthermore, previous predictions were confirmed: the measured chain‐transfer constant decreased with increasing initiator concentration and conversion. Finally, it was confirmed that the presence of light increased the amount of free Co(II) catalyst in agreement with other studies. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of superhydrophobic poly(methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, MPTS‐b‐2,‐2,3,3,4,4,4‐heptafluorobutyl methacrylate, HFBMA)‐grafted silica hybrid nanoparticles (SiO2/PMPTS‐b‐PHFBMA) were prepared by two‐step surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP). Under the adopted polymerization conditions in our previous work, the superhydrophobic property was found to depend on the SI‐ATRP conditions of HFBMA. As a series of work, in this present study, the effects of polymerization conditions, such as the initiator concentration, the molar ratio of monomer and initiator, and the polymerization temperature on the SI‐ATRP kinetics and the interrelation between the kinetics and the surface properties of the nanoparticles were investigated. The results showed that the SI‐ATRP of HFBMA was well controlled. The results also showed that both the surface microphase separation and roughness of the hybrid nanoparticles could be strengthened with the increase of the molecular weight of polymer‐grafted silica hybrid nanoparticles. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we compare two routes for carrying out in situ nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of styrene using the C‐phenyl‐Ntert‐butylnitrone (PBN)/2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) pair to identify the best one for an optimal control. One route consists in adding PBN to the radical polymerization of styrene, while the other approach deals with a prereaction between the nitrone and the free radical initiator prior to the addition of the monomer and the polymerization. The combination of ESR and kinetics studies allowed demonstrating that when the polymerization of styrene is initiated by AIBN in the presence of enough PBN at 110 °C, fast decomposition of AIBN is responsible for the accumulation of dead polymer chains at the early stages of the polymerization, in combination with controlled polystyrene chains. On the other hand, PBN acts as a terminating agent at 70 °C with the formation of a polystyrene end‐capped by an alkoxyamine, which is not labile at this temperature but that can be reactivated and chain‐extended by increasing the temperature. Finally, the radical polymerization of styrene is better controlled when the nitrone/initiator pair is prereacted at 85 °C for 4 h in toluene before styrene is added and polymerized at 110 °C. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The atom transfer radical polymerizations (ATRPs) of styrene initiated by a novel initiator, ethyl 2‐N,N‐(diethylamino)dithiocarbamoyl‐butyrate (EDDCB), in both bulk and solution were successfully carried out in the presence of copper(I) bromide (CuBr) and N,N,N′,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine at 115 °C. The polymerization rate was first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration, and the molecular weights of the obtained polymers increased linearly with the monomer conversions with very narrow molecular weight distributions (as low as 1.17) up to higher conversions in both bulk and solution. The polymerization rate was influenced by various solvents in different degrees in the order of cyclohexanone > dimethylformamide > toluene. The molecular weight distributions of the produced polymers in cyclohexanone were higher than those in dimethylformamide and toluene. The results of 1H NMR analysis and chain extension confirmed that well‐defined polystyrene bearing a photo‐labile N,N‐(diethylamino)dithiocarbamoyl group was obtained via ATRP of styrene with EDDCB as an initiator. The polymerization mechanism for this novel initiation system is a common ATRP process. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 32–41, 2006  相似文献

A new graft copolymer, poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene) ‐graft‐poly(?‐caprolactone), was prepared by combination of reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) with coordination‐insertion ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). The copolymerization of styrene (St) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was carried out at 60 °C in the presence of 2‐phenylprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate (PPDTB) using AIBN as initiator. The molecular weight of poly (2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene) [poly(HEMA‐co‐St)] increased with the monomer conversion, and the molecular weight distribution was in the range of 1.09 ~ 1.39. The ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ?‐caprolactone was then initiated by the hydroxyl groups of the poly(HEMA‐co‐St) precursors in the presence of stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2). GPC and 1H‐NMR data demonstrated the polymerization courses are under control, and nearly all hydroxyl groups took part in the initiation. The efficiency of grafting was very high. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5523–5529, 2004  相似文献

A dual initiator (4‐hydroxy‐butyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate), that is, a molecule containing two functional groups capable of initiating two polymerizations occurring by different mechanisms, has been prepared. It has been used for the sequential two‐step synthesis of well‐defined block copolymers of polystyrene (PS) and poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF) by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and cationic ring‐opening polymerization (CROP). This dual initiator contains a bromoisobutyrate group, which is an efficient initiator for the ATRP of styrene in combination with the Cu(0)/Cu(II)/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine catalyst system. In this way, PS with hydroxyl groups (PS‐OH) is formed. The in situ reaction of the hydroxyl groups originating from the dual initiator with trifluoromethane sulfonic anhydride gives a triflate ester initiating group for the CROP of tetrahydrofuran (THF), leading to PTHF with a tertiary bromide end group (PTHF‐Br). PS‐OH and PTHF‐Br homopolymers have been applied as macroinitiators for the CROP of THF and the ATRP of styrene, respectively. PS‐OH, used as a macroinitiator, results in a mixture of the block copolymer and remaining macroinitiator. With PTHF‐Br as a macroinitiator for the ATRP of styrene, well‐defined PTHF‐b‐PS block copolymers can be prepared. The efficiency of PS‐OH or PTHF‐Br as a macroinitiator has been investigated with matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and NMR. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of styrene was carried out on the surfaces of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) initiated by an MWNT‐supported initiator multiwalled carbon nanotube–2″,2″,6″,6″‐tetramethylpiperidinyloxy (MWNT–Tempo). The content of polystyrene grafted from the surface was controlled by changes in the polymerization conditions, such as the reaction times or the ratios of monomers to initiators. The obtained polystyrene‐grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT–PSs) were further used to initiate the polymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine to get polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine)‐grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT–PS‐b‐P4VPs). In contrast to unmodified MWNTs, MWNT–PSs had relatively good dispersibility in various organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran, CHCL3, and o‐dichlorobenzene. The structures and properties of MWNT–PSs and MWNT–PS‐b‐P4VPs were characterized and studied with several methods, including thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet–visible, and transmission electron microscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate and styrene initiated with freshly prepared p‐toluenesulfonyl iodide (TsI) and catalyzed with CuX/2,2′‐bipyridine (bpy), where X is Cl, Br, or I, and various self‐regulated copper‐based catalytic systems, such as copper/bpy, copper(I) oxide/bpy, copper(I) sulfide/bpy, copper(I) selenide/bpy, and copper(I) telluride/bpy, is reported. The exchange of C? I into C? Br and C? Cl takes place when the living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate is catalyzed by copper(I) bromide/bpy and copper(I) chloride/bpy, respectively. Therefore, the use of the TsI initiator facilitates the synthesis, starting from a single initiator, of poly(methyl methacrylate) containing C? I, C? Br, and C? Cl chain ends. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 3920–3931, 2005  相似文献

Hybrid nanoarchitecture of tailor‐made Poly(ethyl acrylate)/clay was prepared by surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP), by tethering ATRP initiator on active hydroxyl group, present in surface as well as in the organic modifier of the clay used. Extensive exfoliation was facilitated by using these initiator modified clay platelets. Poly(ethyl acrylate) chains with controlled polymerization and narrow polydispersities were forced to be grown from within the clay gallery (intergallery) as well as from the outer surface (extragallery) of the clay platelets. The polymer chains attached onto clay surfaces might have the potential to provide the composites with enhanced compatibility in blends with common polymers. Attachment of the initiator on clay platelets was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), elemental analysis, Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and microscopic analysis. Finally, end group analysis (by Matrix‐Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry, and chain extension experiment) of the cleaved polymer and morphological study (by WAXD, Transmission Electron Microscopy), performed on the polymer grafted clays examined the effect of grafting on the efficiency of polymerization and the degree of dispersion of clay tactoids in polymer. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. N‐Bromosuccinimide (NBS) was used as the initiator in the atom transfer radical polymerizations of styrene (St) and methyl methacrylate (MMA). The NBS/CuBr/bipyridine (bpy) system shows good controllability for both polymerizations and yields polymers with polydispersity indexes ranging from 1.18 to 1.25 for St and 1.14 to 1.41 for MMA, depending on the conditions used. The end‐group analysis of poly(MMA) and polystyrene indicated the polymerization is initiated by the succinimidyl radicals formed from the redox reaction of NBS with CuBr/bpy. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diels–Alder cycloaddition reactions were used to functionalize multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with 1‐benzocylcobutene‐1′‐phenylethylene (BCB‐PE) or 4‐hydroxyethylbenzocyclobutene (BCB‐EO). The covalent functionalization of the nanotubes with these initiator precursors was verified by FTIR and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). After appropriate transformations/additions, the functionalized MWNTs were used for surface initiated anionic and ring opening polymerizations of ethylene oxide and ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL), respectively. The OH‐end groups were transformed to isopropylbromide groups by reaction with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide, for subsequent atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene or 2‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate to afford the final diblock copolymers. 1H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), TGA, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used for the characterization of the nanocomposite materials. TEM images showed the presence of a polymer layer around the MWNTs as well as the dissociation of MWNT bundles. Consequently, this general methodology, employing combinations of different polymerization techniques, increases the diversity of diblocks that can be grafted from MWNTs. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The controlled polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in bulk was initiated with p‐chlorobenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate ( 1 ) and Cu(II) or Cu(I)/Cu(II)/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldietylene triamine (PMDETA) complex system at various temperatures (20, 60, and 90 °C). The proposed polymerization mechanism is based on the Meerwein‐type arylation reaction followed by a reverse atom transfer radical polymerization. In this mechanism, aryl radicals formed by the reaction with 1 and Cu(I) and/or PMDETA initiated the polymerization of MMA. The polymerization is controlled up to a molecular weight of 46,000 at 90 °C. Chain extension was carried out to confirm the controlled manner of the polymerization system. In all polymerization systems, the polydispersity index and initiator efficiency ranged from 1.10–1.57 to 0.10–0.21, respectively. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The free‐radical homopolymerization and copolymerization behavior of N‐(2‐methylene‐3‐butenoyl)piperidine was investigated. When the monomer was heated in bulk at 60 °C for 25 h without an initiator, about 30% of the monomer was consumed by the thermal polymerization and the Diels–Alder reaction. No such side reaction was observed when the polymerization was carried out in a benzene solution with 1 mol % 2,2′‐azobisisobutylonitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. The polymerization rate equation was found to be Rp ∝ [AIBN]0.507[M]1.04, and the overall activation energy of polymerization was calculated to be 89.5 kJ/mol. The microstructure of the resulting polymer was exclusively a 1,4‐structure that included both 1,4‐E and 1,4‐Z configurations. The copolymerizations of this monomer with styrene and/or chloroprene as comonomers were carried out in benzene solutions at 60 °C with AIBN as an initiator. In the copolymerization with styrene, the monomer reactivity ratios were r1 = 6.10 and r2 = 0.03, and the Q and e values were calculated to be 10.8 and 0.45, respectively. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report a simple strategy for the grafting of poly(methacrylic acid) [poly(MAA)] brushes from silicon substrate by surface‐initiated RAFT polymerization and the subsequent coupling of BODIPY to these brushes to render them fluorescent. The poly(MAA) brushes were first generated by functionalization of hydrogen‐terminated silicon substrate with methyl‐10‐undecenoate which both leads to the formation of an organic layer covalently linked to the surface via Si? C bonds without detectable reaction of the carboxylate groups and couples to the polymerization initiator, followed by surface‐initiated RAFT polymerization of tert‐butyl methacrylate from these substrate‐bound initiator centers, and finally conversion of tert‐butyl groups to carboxylic acid groups. The poly(MAA) brushes were then made fluorescent by grafting a BODIPY derivative via an ester linkage. The stability of the BODIPY‐based fluorescent polymer brushes in buffer solutions at pH 6.0 to 12.0 with added salt was investigated by ellipsometry, fluorescence microscopy, grazing angle‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results of these measurements indicated that the organic molecule‐initiator bond (ester linkage) is unstable and can be hydrolyzed resulting in detaching of the immobilized polymer from the silicon substrate. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel surface modification method for titania nanoparticles is provided via the surface‐initiated photocatalytic polymerization with the aid of acrylic acid (AA) or sodium styrene sulfonate (NaSS). The properties of modified titania nanoparticles are investigated with aqueous electrophoresis measurements, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Then the modified titania is used as Pickering stabilizer for further polymerization and the morphology of the resulted polymer microspheres is characterized by TEM and field‐emission scanning electron microscopy. It is proven that the addition of AA or NaSS for the surface‐initiated polymerization can obviously affect the structure and morphology of the final polymer composite microspheres. The formation mechanism of several kinds of polymer particles is also proposed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

Two different initiator/transfer agents (inifers) containing an alkoxyamine and a dithiobenzoate were synthetized and used to trigger out either reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization or nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP). α‐Dithiobenzoate‐ω‐alkoxyamine‐difunctional polymers were produced in both cases which were subsequently used as precursors in the formation of block copolymers. This synthetic approach was applied to N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) or polyethylene oxide methacrylate (EOMA) to form α,ω‐heterodifunctional homopolymers via RAFT at 60°C which were chain extended with styrene by activating the alkoxyamine moiety at 120°C. Under such temperature conditions, it is proposed that a tandem NMP/RAFT polymerization is initiated producing a simultaneous growth of polystyrene blocks at both chain‐ends. Self‐assembled nanostructures of these amphiphilic block copolymers were evidenced by scanning electron microscopy. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献
