Alternating‐Direction Explicit (A.D.E.) finite‐difference methods make use of two approximations that are implemented for computations proceeding in alternating directions, e.g., from left to right and from right to left, with each approximation being explicit in its respective direction of computation. Stable A.D.E. schemes for solving the linear parabolic partial differential equations that model heat diffusion are well‐known, as are stable A.D.E. schemes for solving the first‐order equations of fluid advection. Several of these are combined here to derive A.D.E. schemes for solving time‐dependent advection‐diffusion equations, and their stability characteristics are discussed. In each case, it is found that it is the advection term that limits the stability of the scheme. The most stable of the combinations presented comprises an unconditionally stable approximation for computations carried out in the direction of advection of the system, from left to right in this case, and a conditionally stable approximation for computations proceeding in the opposite direction. To illustrate the application of the methods and verify the stability conditions, they are applied to some quasi‐linear one‐dimensional advection‐diffusion problems. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We derive a high‐order compact alternating direction implicit (ADI) method for solving three‐dimentional unsteady convection‐diffusion problems. The method is fourth‐order in space and second‐order in time. It permits multiple uses of the one‐dimensional tridiagonal algorithm with a considerable saving in computing time and results in a very efficient solver. It is shown through a discrete Fourier analysis that the method is unconditionally stable in the diffusion case. Numerical experiments are conducted to test its high order and to compare it with the standard second‐order Douglas‐Gunn ADI method and the spatial fourth‐order compact scheme by Karaa. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we develop an exponential high order compact alternating direction implicit (EHOC ADI) method for solving three dimensional (3D) unsteady convection–diffusion equations. The method, which requires only a regular seven‐point 3D stencil similar to that in the standard second‐order methods, is second order accurate in time and fourth‐order accurate in space and unconditionally stable. The resulting EHOC ADI scheme in each alternating direction implicit (ADI) solution step corresponding to a strictly diagonally dominant matrix equation can be solved by the application of the one‐dimensional tridiagonal Thomas algorithm with a considerable saving in computing time. Numerical experiments for three test problems are carried out to demonstrate the performance of the present method and to compare it with the classical Douglas–Gunn ADI method and the Karaa's high‐order compact ADI method. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this note, a non‐standard finite difference (NSFD) scheme is proposed for an advection‐diffusion‐reaction equation with nonlinear reaction term. We first study the diffusion‐free case of this equation, that is, an advection‐reaction equation. Two exact finite difference schemes are constructed for the advection‐reaction equation by the method of characteristics. As these exact schemes are complicated and are not convenient to use, an NSFD scheme is derived from the exact scheme. Then, the NSFD scheme for the advection‐reaction equation is combined with a finite difference space‐approximation of the diffusion term to provide a NSFD scheme for the advection‐diffusion‐reaction equation. This new scheme could preserve the fixed points, the positivity, and the boundedness of the solution of the original equation. Numerical experiments verify the validity of our analytical results. In this article, we extend the fourth‐order compact boundary scheme in Liao et al. (Numer Methods Partial Differential Equations 18 (2002), 340–354) to a 3D problem and then combine it with the fourth‐order compact alternating direction implicit (ADI) method in Gu et al. (J Comput Appl Math 155 (2003), 1–17) to solve the 3D reaction‐diffusion equation with Neumann boundary condition. First, the reaction‐diffusion equation is solved with a compact fourth‐order finite difference method based on the Padé approximation, which is then combined with the ADI method and a fourth‐order compact scheme to approximate the Neumann boundary condition, to obtain fourth order accuracy in space. The accuracy in the temporal dimension is improved to fourth order by applying the Richardson extrapolation technique, although the unconditional stability of the numerical method is proved, and several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed new algorithm. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We compare and investigate the performance of the exact scheme of the Michaelis–Menten (M–M) ordinary differential equation with several new nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) schemes that we construct using Mickens' rules. Furthermore, the exact scheme of the M–M equation is used to design several dynamically consistent NSFD schemes for related reaction‐diffusion equations, advection‐reaction equations, and advection‐reaction‐diffusion equations. Numerical simulations that support the theory and demonstrate computationally the power of NSFD schemes are presented. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider a time‐dependent and a stationary convection‐diffusion equation. These equations are approximated by a combined finite element – finite volume method: the diffusion term is discretized by Crouzeix‐Raviart piecewise linear finite elements on a triangular grid, and the convection term by upwind barycentric finite volumes. In the nonstationary case, we use an implicit Euler approach for time discretization. This scheme is shown to be L2‐stable uniformly with respect to the diffusion coefficient. In addition, it turns out that stability is unconditional in the time‐dependent case. These results hold if the underlying grid satisfies a condition that is fulfilled, for example, by some structured meshes. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We introduce finite‐difference schemes based on a special upwind‐type collocation grid, in order to obtain approximations of the solution of linear transport‐dominated advection‐diffusion problems. The method is well suited when the diffusion parameter is very small compared to the discretization parameter. A theory is developed and many numerical experiments are shown. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2005  相似文献

An implicit Euler finite‐volume scheme for a degenerate cross‐diffusion system describing the ion transport through biological membranes is proposed. The strongly coupled equations for the ion concentrations include drift terms involving the electric potential, which is coupled to the concentrations through the Poisson equation. The cross‐diffusion system possesses a formal gradient‐flow structure revealing nonstandard degeneracies, which lead to considerable mathematical difficulties. The finite‐volume scheme is based on two‐point flux approximations with “double” upwind mobilities. The existence of solutions to the fully discrete scheme is proved. When the particles are not distinguishable and the dynamics is driven by cross diffusion only, it is shown that the scheme preserves the structure of the equations like nonnegativity, upper bounds, and entropy dissipation. The degeneracy is overcome by proving a new discrete Aubin–Lions lemma of “degenerate” type. Numerical simulations of a calcium‐selective ion channel in two space dimensions show that the scheme is efficient even in the general case of ion transport.  相似文献

In this article, we develop a combined finite element‐weighted upwind finite volume method for convection‐dominated diffusion problems in two dimensions, which discretizes the diffusion term with the standard finite element scheme, and the convection and source terms with the weighted upwind finite volume scheme. The developed method leads to a totally new scheme for convection‐dominated problems, which overcomes numerical oscillation, avoids numerical dispersion, and has high‐order accuracy. Stability analyses of the scheme are given for the problems with constant coefficients. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the stability and optimal convergence of our proposed method. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper deals with development and analysis of finite volume schemes for a one-dimensional nonlinear, degenerate, convection-diffusion equation having application in petroleum reservoir and groundwater aquifer simulation. The main difficulty is that the solution typically lacks regularity due to the degenerate nonlinear diffusion term. We analyze and compare three families of numerical schemes corresponding to explicit, semi-implicit, and implicit discretization of the diffusion term and a Godunov scheme for the advection term. L stability under appropriate CFL conditions and BV estimates are obtained. It is shown that the schemes satisfy a discrete maximum principle. Then we prove convergence of the approximate solution to the weak solution of the problem. Results of numerical experiments using the present approach are reported.  相似文献

Saul'yev‐type asymmetric schemes have been widely used in solving diffusion and advection equations. In this work, we show that Saul'yev‐type schemes can be derived from the exponential splitting of the semidiscretized equation which fundamentally explains their unconditional stability. Furthermore, we show that optimal schemes are obtained by forcing each scheme's amplification factor to match that of the exact amplification factor. A new second‐order explicit scheme is found for solving the advection equation with the identical amplification factor as the implicit Crank–Nicolson algorithm. Other new schemes for solving the advection–diffusion equation are also derived.© 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 30: 1961–1983, 2014  相似文献

A backward Euler alternating direction implicit (ADI) difference scheme is formulated and analyzed for the three‐dimensional fractional evolution equation. In our method, the Riemann‐Liouville fractional integral term is treated by means of first order convolution quadrature suggested by Lubich. Meanwhile, an ADI technique is adopted to reduce the multidimensional problem to a series of one‐dimensional problems. A fully discrete difference scheme is constructed with space discretization by finite difference method. Two new inner products and corresponding norms are defined to analyze the scheme. The verification of stability and convergence is based on the nonnegative character of the real quadratic form associated with the convolution quadrature. Numerical experiments are reported to demonstrate the efficiency of our scheme.  相似文献

We present a parallel matrix‐free implicit finite volume scheme for the solution of unsteady three‐dimensional advection‐diffusion‐reaction equations with smooth and Dirac‐Delta source terms. The scheme is formally second order in space and a Newton–Krylov method is employed for the appearing nonlinear systems in the implicit time integration. The matrix‐vector product required is hardcoded without any approximations, obtaining a matrix‐free method that needs little storage and is well‐suited for parallel implementation. We describe the matrix‐free implementation of the method in detail and give numerical evidence of its second‐order convergence in the presence of smooth source terms. For nonsmooth source terms, the convergence order drops to one half. Furthermore, we demonstrate the method's applicability for the long‐time simulation of calcium flow in heart cells and show its parallel scaling. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We present a finite volume method for the coupled systems of nonlinear partial differential equations arising in secondary hydrocarbon migration and accumulation processes in basin modeling. We propose a modified alternating direction implicit splitting acceleration technique to solve the scheme in an effective and robust manner. We apply the scheme to simulate model problems with clear physical features and to secondary migration and accumulation problems in real petroleum reservoirs. The numerical experiments show that the scheme is very robust and generates stable and physically reasonable numerical results, even in the extremely long time period that ranges from millions of years to tens of millions of years. This clearly shows the strong potential of the method developed. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 19: 254–270, 2003  相似文献

In this work, a dual porosity model of reactive solute transport in porous media is presented. This model consists of a nonlinear-degenerate advection-diffusion equation including equilibrium adsorption to the reaction combined with a first-order equation for the non-equilibrium adsorption interaction processes. The numerical scheme for solving this model involves a combined high order finite volume and finite element scheme for approximation of the advection-diffusion part and relaxation-regularized algorithm for nonlinearity-degeneracy. The combined finite volume-finite element scheme is based on a new formulation developed by Eymard et al. (2010) [10]. This formulation treats the advection and diffusion separately. The advection is approximated by a second-order local maximum principle preserving cell-vertex finite volume scheme that has been recently proposed whereas the diffusion is approximated by a finite element method. The result is a conservative, accurate and very flexible algorithm which allows the use of different mesh types such as unstructured meshes and is able to solve difficult problems. Robustness and accuracy of the method have been evaluated, particularly error analysis and the rate of convergence, by comparing the analytical and numerical solutions for first and second order upwind approaches. We also illustrate the performance of the discretization scheme through a variety of practical numerical examples. The discrete maximum principle has been proved.  相似文献

Finite difference method is an important methodology in the approximation of waves. In this paper, we will study two implicit finite difference schemes for the simulation of waves. They are the weighted alternating direction implicit (ADI) scheme and the locally one-dimensional (LOD) scheme. The approximation errors, stability conditions, and dispersion relations for both schemes are investigated. Our analysis shows that the LOD implicit scheme has less dispersion error than that of the ADI scheme. Moreover, the unconditional stability for both schemes with arbitrary spatial accuracy is established for the first time. In order to improve computational efficiency, numerical algorithms based on message passing interface (MPI) are implemented. Numerical examples of wave propagation in a three-layer model and a standard complex model are presented. Our analysis and comparisons show that both ADI and LOD schemes are able to efficiently and accurately simulate wave propagation in complex media.  相似文献

In this study, new high‐order backward semi‐Lagrangian methods are developed to solve nonlinear advection–diffusion type problems, which are realized using high‐order characteristic‐tracking strategies. The proposed characteristic‐tracking strategies are second‐order L‐stable and third‐order L(α)‐stable methods, which are based on a classical implicit multistep method combined with a error‐correction method. We also use backward differentiation formulas and the fourth‐order finite‐difference scheme for diffusion problem discretization in the temporal and spatial domains, respectively. To demonstrate the adaptability and efficiency of these time‐discretization strategies, we apply these methods to nonlinear advection–diffusion type problems such as the viscous Burgers' equation. Through simulations, not only the temporal and spatial accuracies are numerically evaluated but also the proposed methods are shown to be superior to the compared existing characteristic‐tracking methods under the same rates of convergence in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Finally, we have shown that the proposed method well preserves the energy and mass when the viscosity coefficient becomes zero.  相似文献
