A new synthetic strategy, the combination of living polymerization of ylides and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), was successfully used to obtain well‐defined polymethylene‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PM‐b‐PCL) diblock copolymers. Two hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐OH, Mn= 1800 g mol?1 (PDI = 1.18) and Mn = 6400 g mol?1 (PDI = 1.14)) were prepared using living polymerization of dimethylsulfoxonium methylides. Then, such polymers were successfully transformed to PM‐b‐PCL diblock copolymers by using stannous octoate as a catalyst for ROP of ε‐caprolactone. The GPC traces and 1H NMR of PM‐b‐PCL diblock copolymers indicated the successful extension of PCL segment (Mn of PM‐b‐PCL = 5200–10,300 g mol?1; PDI = 1.06–1.13). The thermal properties of the double crystalline diblock copolymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results indicated that the incorporation of crystalline segments of PCL chain effectively influence the crystalline process of PM segments. The low‐density polyethylene (LDPE)/PCL and LDPE/polycarbonate (PC) blends were prepared using PM‐b‐PCL as compatibilizer, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation on the cryofractured surface of such blend polymers indicates that the PM‐b‐PCL diblock copolymers are effective compatibilizers for LDPE/PCL and LDPE/PC blends. Porous films were fabricated via the breath‐figure method using different concentration of PM‐b‐PCL diblock copolymers in CH2Cl2 under a static humid condition. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of a new family of amphiphilic multiblock and triblock copolymers is described. The synthetic methodology rests on the preparation of telechelic multifunctional and difunctional chain transfer agents easily available in two synthetic steps from commercially available polydimethylsiloxane‐containing starting materials. Telechelic polymers thus synthesized are used as macromolecular chain transfer agents in the reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMA) enabling the synthesis of (AB)n‐type multiblock and ABA‐type triblock copolymers of varying compositions possessing monomodal molecular weight distribution. (AB)n multiblock copolymers [(PDMA‐b‐PDMS)n] were prepared with between 52 and 95 wt % poly(dimethylacrylamide) with number average molecular weights (Mn) between 14,000 and 86,000 (polydispersities of 1.20–2.30). On the other hand, ABA block copolymers with DMA led to amphiphilic block copolymers (PDMA‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PDMA) with Mn values between 9000 and 44,000 (polydispersities of 1.24–1.62). © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyisobutylene‐b‐poly(N,N‐diethylacrylamide) (PIB‐b‐PDEAAm) well‐defined amphiphilic diblock copolymers were synthesized by sequential living carbocationic polymerization and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The hydrophobic polyisobutylene segment was first built by living carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene at ?70 ° C followed by multistep transformations to give a well‐defined (Mw/Mn = 1.22) macromolecular chain transfer agent, PIB‐CTA. The hydrophilic poly(N,N‐diethylacrylamide) block was constructed by PIB‐CTA mediated RAFT polymerization of N,N‐diethylacrylamide at 60 ° C to afford the desired well‐defined PIB‐b‐PDEAAm diblock copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤1.26). Fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were employed to investigate the self‐assembly behavior of PIB‐b‐PDEAAm amphiphilic diblock copolymers in aqueous media. These diblock copolymers also exhibited thermo‐responsive phase behavior, which was confirmed by UV‐Vis and DLS measurements. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A series of well‐defined amphiphilic diblock copolymers consisting of hydrophobic polyisobutylene (PIB) and hydrophilic poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) segments was synthesized via the combination of living carbocationic polymerization and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Living carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene followed by end‐capping with 1,3‐butadiene was first performed at ?70 °C to give a well‐defined allyl‐Cl‐terminated PIB with a low polydispersity (Mw/Mn =1.29). This end‐functionalized PIB was further converted to a macromolecular chain transfer agent for mediating RAFT block copolymerization of 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate at 60 °C in tetrahydrofuran to afford the target well‐defined PIB‐b‐PDEAEMA diblock copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤1.22). The self‐assembly behavior of these amphiphilic diblock copolymers in aqueous media was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope, and furthermore, their pH‐responsive behavior was studied by UV‐vis and dynamic light scattering. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Triblock copolymers of N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were synthesized by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using two different types of difunctional telechelic PDMS‐based dixanthate macroinitiators. The incorporation of PDMS into the triblock copolymers was evidenced by 1H NMR spectroscopy and varied between 4 mol % and as high as 20 mol %, dependent on reaction time and monomer conversion. The copolymer homogeneity was characterized in terms of molecular weight distribution determined by GPC to estimate the level of control over the chain length. Monomodal molecular weight distributions were observed, and 1H NMR spectroscopy indicated the copolymers had number average molecular weights (Mn) ranging between 28,000 and 160,000 g/mol. In addition, thin film phase separation and critical micelle concentrations for these copolymers were analyzed via transmission electron microscopy and surface tension measurements, respectively. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Model diblock copolymers of poly(1,4‐butadiene) (PB) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), PB‐b‐PDMS, were synthesized by the sequential anionic polymerization (high vacuum techniques) of butadiene and hexamethylciclotrisiloxane (D3) in the presence of sec‐BuLi. By homogeneous hydrogenation of PB‐b‐PDMS, the corresponding poly(ethylene) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) block copolymers, PE‐b‐PDMS, were obtained. The synthesized block copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C NMR), size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and rheology. SEC combined with 1H NMR analysis indicates that the polydispersity index of the samples (Mw/Mn) is low, and that the chemical composition of the copolymers varies from low to medium PDMS content. According to DSC and TGA experiments, the thermal stability of these block copolymers depends on the PDMS content, whereas TEM analysis reveals ordered arrangements of the microphases. The morphologies observed vary from spherical and cylindrical to lamellar domains. This ordered state (even at high temperatures) was further confirmed by small‐amplitude oscillatory shear flow tests. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The design and synthesis of well‐defined polymethylene‐b‐polystyrene (PM‐b‐PS, Mn = 1.3 × 104–3.0 × 104 g/mol; Mw/Mn (GPC) = 1.08–1.18) diblock copolymers by the combination of living polymerization of ylides and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was successfully achieved. The 1H NMR spectrum and GPC traces of PM‐b‐PS indicated the successful extension of PS segment on the PM macroinitiator. The micellization behavior of such diblock copolymers in tetrahydrofuran were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. The average aggregate sizes of PM‐b‐PS diblock copolymers with the same length of PM segment in tetrahydrofuran solution (1.0 mg mL?1) increases from 104.2 nm to 167.7 nm when the molecular weight of PS segment increases. The spherical precipitated aggregates of PM‐b‐PS diblock copolymers with an average diameter of 600 nm were observed by AFM. Honeycomb porous films with the average diameter of 3.0 μm and 6.0 μm, respectively, were successfully fabricated using the solution of PM‐b‐PS diblock copolymers in carbon disulfide via the breath‐figure (BF) method under a static humid condition. The cross‐sections of low density polyethylene (LDPE)/polystyrene (PS)/PM‐b‐PS and LDPE/polycarbonate (PC)/PM‐b‐PS blends were observed by scanning electron microscope and reveal that the PM‐b‐PS diblock copolymers are effective compatilizers for LDPE/PS and LDPE/PC blends. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The atom transfer radical copolymerization of N‐substituted maleimides such as N‐phenylmaleimide (PhMI), N‐cyclohexylmaleimide (ChMI), and N‐butylmaleimide (NBMI) with styrene initiated with dendritic polyarylether 2‐bromoisobutyrates in an ionic liquid, 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF6]), at room temperature and anisole at 110 °C was investigated. The dendritic‐linear block copolymers obtained in ionic liquid possessed well‐defined molecular weight and low polydispersity (1.05 < Mw/Mn < 1.32) and could be used as a macroinitiator for chain‐extension polymerization, suggesting the living nature of the reaction system. The ionic liquids containing catalyst could be recycled in the atom transfer radical polymerization systems without further treatment. Compared with polymerization conducted in anisole, the polymerization in ionic liquid had a stronger tendency for alternation. The tendency for alternation decreased in the order PhMI > NBMI > ChMI in [bmim][PF6] and PhMI > ChMI > NBMI in anisole. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel amphiphilic diblock copolymers composed of hydrophilic linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and linear brush hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were synthesized. Three different molecular weights of monomethyl ether PEG were initially functionalized with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to afford macroinitiators suitable for atom‐transfer radical polymerization. The macroinitiators were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis and matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectroscopy. The three different molecular weight macroinitiators were then chain extended with monomethacryloxypropyl‐terminated PDMS and photoactive 2‐(methylacyloyloxy)ethyl anthracene‐9‐carboxylate in different molar ratios to afford a series of photoresponsive amphiphilic diblock copolymers with high conversions. Self‐assembly of these linear–linear brush diblock copolymers in N,N‐dimethylformamide afforded nanoparticles with hydrodynamic diameters (dH) ranging from 41 to 268 nm, as determined by dynamic light scattering analysis. Crosslinking and stabilization of the nanoparticles was achieved via [4+4] photodimerization of the anthracene moieties upon exposure to UV radiation at 365 nm with the reverse reaction studied at a wavelength of 254 nm. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the self‐assembled nanoparticles and their crosslinked derivatives had spherical morphologies. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Well‐defined polymethylene‐block‐polystyrene (PM‐b‐PS) diblock copolymers were synthesized via a combination of polyhomologation of ylides and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene. Trithiocarbonate‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐TTCB) (Mn = 1400 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.09 and Mn = 2100 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.20) were obtained via an esterification of S?1‐dodecyl‐S′‐(α,α′‐dimethyl‐α″‐acetate) trithiocarbonate with hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylene synthesized via polyhomologation of ylides followed by oxidation. Then, a series of PM‐b‐PS (Mn = 5500–34,000 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.12–1.25) diblock copolymers were obtained by RAFT polymerization of styrene using PM‐TTCB as a macromolecular chain‐transfer agent. The chain structures of all the polymers were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), gel permeation chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thiocarbonylthio end‐group of PM‐b‐PS was transformed into thiol group by aminolysis and confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy. In addition, microfibers and microspheres of such diblock copolymers were fabricated by electrospinning process and observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Copolymerizations of 1,1‐dihydroperfluorooctyl methacrylate (FOMA; M1) and methacryloxypropyl‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane [M‐PDMS (Mn = 5.9 K); M2] and homopolymerization of M‐PDMS in supercritical CO2 are described. The homopolymerization of M‐PDMS proceeded homogeneously without difficulty to produce oligomers (Mn = 30 K). The copolymerizations of FOMA and M‐PDMS also proceeded homogeneously over a wide monomer feed ratio. The ratio of M‐PDMS incorporated into the copolymer obtained was almost equal to the monomer feed ratio even up to the high conversion. The reactivity ratio r1 was determined to be 1.66. DSC examination of the copolymers indicated a microphase‐separated morphology consisting of poly‐FOMA (PFOMA) and PDMS domains for all copolymer compositions. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Model copolymers of poly(butadiene) (PB) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), PB‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PB, were synthesized by sequential anionic polymerization (high vacuum techniques) of 1,3‐butadiene and hexamethylciclotrisiloxane (D3) on sec‐BuLi followed by chlorosilane‐coupling chemistry. The synthesized copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). SEC and 1H NMR results showed low polydispersity indexes (Mw/Mn) and variable siloxane compositions, whereas DSC and TGA experiments indicated that the thermal stability of the triblock copolymers depends on the PDMS composition. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article discusses an effective route to prepare amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing a poly(ethylene oxide) block and a polyolefin block that includes semicrystalline thermoplastics, such as polyethylene and syndiotactic polystyrene (s‐PS), and elastomers, such as poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) and poly(ethylene‐co‐styrene) random copolymers. The broad choice of polyolefin blocks provides the amphiphilic copolymers with a wide range of thermal properties from high melting temperature ~270 °C to low glass‐transition temperature ~?60 °C. The chemistry involves two reaction steps, including the preparation of a borane group‐terminated polyolefin by the combination of a metallocene catalyst and a borane chain‐transfer agent as well as the interconversion of a borane terminal group to an anionic (? O?K+) terminal group for the subsequent ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The overall reaction process resembles a transformation from the metallocene polymerization of α‐olefins to the ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The well‐defined reaction mechanisms in both steps provide the diblock copolymer with controlled molecular structure in terms of composition, molecular weight, moderate molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 2.5), and absence of homopolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A bromine capped star‐shaped poly(methyl methacrylate) (S‐PMMA‐Br) was synthesized with CuBr/sparteine/PT‐Br as a catalyst and initiator to polymerize methyl methacrylate (MMA) according to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Then, with S‐PMMA‐Br as a macroinitiator, a series of new liquid crystal rod–coil star block copolymers with different molecular weights and low polydispersity were obtained by this method. The block architecture {coil‐conformation of the MMA segment and rigid‐rod conformation of 2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl] styrene segment} of the four‐armed rod–coil star block copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR. The liquid‐crystalline behavior of these copolymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. We found that the liquid‐crystalline behavior depends on the molecular weight of the rigid segment; only the four‐armed rod–coil star block copolymers with each arm's Mn,GPC of the rigid block beyond 0.91 × 104 g/mol could form liquid‐crystalline phases above the glass‐transition temperature of the rigid block. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined polyurethane–polydimethylsiloxane particles of tunable diameter in the range of 0.5–20 μm were synthesized in “one‐shot” by step‐growth polymerization using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as a dispersant medium. Polymerizations were carried out at 60 °C and above 25 MPa, after the solubility of each reactant in scCO2 has been determined in its typical reaction concentration. The synthesis of such copolymers was achieved by polyaddition between short aliphatic diols, that is, ethylene glycol, 1,4‐butanediol (BD) or polyethylene oxide (Mn = 200 g mol?1), and tolylene‐1,4‐di‐isocyanate (TDI) in the presence of mono or di‐isocyanate‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as reactive stabilizers and dibutyltin dilaurate as a catalyst. The nature of the diol used as well as the functionality of the reactive stabilizer incorporated was found to have a dramatic effect on the molar mass and the morphology of the resulting product. Thus, copolymers obtained from the polyaddition of BD and TDI in the presence of di‐isocyanate‐terminated PDMS exhibit molar mass up to 90,000 g mol?1. Thermal behaviors of copolymers were also examined by differential scanning calorimetry. All samples exhibited only one glass transition temperature (Tg) and were found to be totally amorphous. A logical decrease of the Tg was observed as the length of the diol incorporated increased, that is, as the density of urethane linkages within the polymer decreased. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined amphiphilic polymethylene‐b‐poly (acrylicacid) diblock copolymers have been synthesized via a new strategy combining polyhomologation and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐OH) with different molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distribution are obtained through the polyhomologation of dimethylsulfoxonium methylides following quantitative oxidation via trimethylamine‐N‐oxide dihydrate. Subsequently, polymethylene‐based macroinitiators (PM‐MIs Mn = 1,300 g mol?1 [Mw/Mn = 1.11] and Mn = 3,300 g mol?1 [Mw/Mn = 1.04]) are synthesized by transformation of terminal hydroxyl group of PM‐OH to α‐haloester in ~100% conversion. ATRPs of tert‐butyl acrylate (t‐BuA) are then carried out using PM‐MIs as initiator to construct PM‐b‐P(t‐BuA) diblock copolymers with controllable molecular weight (Mn = 8,800–15,800 g mol?1 Mw/Mn = 1.04–1.09) and different weight ratio of PM/P(t‐BuA) segment (1:1.7–1:11.2). The amphiphilic PM‐b‐PAA diblock copolymers are finally prepared by hydrolysis of PM‐b‐P(t‐BuA) copolymers and their self‐assembly behavior in water is preliminarily investigated via the determination of critical micelle concentrations, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscope (TEM). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD) polystyrene‐b‐poly[methyl(3,3,3‐trifluoropropyl)siloxane] (PS‐b‐PMTFPS) diblock copolymers were synthesized by the sequential anionic polymerization of styrene and trans‐1,3,5‐trimethyl‐1,3,5‐tris(3′,3′,3′‐trifluoropropyl)cyclotrisiloxane in tetrahydrofuran (THF) with n‐butyllithium as the initiator. The diblock copolymers had narrow MWDs ranging from 1.06 to 1.20 and number‐average molecular weights ranging from 8.2 × 103 to 37.1 × 103. To investigate the properties of the copolymers, diblock copolymers with different weight fractions of poly[methyl(3,3,3‐trifluoropropyl)siloxane] (15.4–78.8 wt %) were prepared. The compositions of the diblock copolymers were calculated from the characteristic proton integrals of 1H NMR spectra. For the anionic ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of 1,3,5‐trimethyl‐1,3,5‐tris(3′,3′,3′‐trifluoropropyl)cyclotrisiloxane (F3) initiated by polystyryllithium, high monomer concentrations could give high polymer yields and good control of MWDs when THF was used as the polymerization solvent. It was speculated that good control of the block copolymerization under the condition of high monomer concentrations was due to the slowdown of the anionic ROP rate of F3 and the steric hindrance of the polystyrene precursors. There was enough time to terminate the ROP of F3 when the polymer yield was high, and good control of block copolymerization could be achieved thereafter. The thermal properties (differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis) were also investigated for the PS‐b‐PMTFPS diblock copolymers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined azobenzene‐containing side‐chain liquid crystalline diblock copolymers composed of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐azobenzene‐4′‐oxy) hexyl methacrylate] (PMMAZO) and poly(γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate) (PBLG) were synthesized by click reaction from alkyne‐ and azide‐functionalized homopolymers. The alkyne‐terminated PMMAZO homopolymers were synthesized by copper‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization with a bromine‐containing alkyne bifunctional initiator, and the azido‐terminated PBLG homopolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate‐N‐carboxyanhydride in DMF at room temperature using an amine‐containing azide initiator. The thermotropic phase behavior of PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers in bulk were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized light microscopy. The PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers exhibited a smectic phase and a nematic phase when the weight fraction of PMMAZO block was more than 50%. Photoisomerization behavior of PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers and the corresponding PMMAZO homopolymers in solid film and in solution were investigated using UV–vis. In solution, trans–cis isomerization of diblock copolymers was slower than that of the corresponding PMMAZO homopolymers. These results may provide guidelines for the design of effective photoresponsive anisotropic materials. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

Novel amphiphilic comb‐dendronized diblock copolymers composed of hydrophobic Percec‐type dendronized polystyrene block and hydrophilic comb‐like poly(ethylene oxide) grafted polymethacrylate P(PEOMA) block were designed and synthesized via two steps of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The comb‐like P(PEOMA) prepared by ATRP of macromonomers (PEOMA) with two different molecular weights (Mn = 300 and 475) were used to initiate the sequent ATRP of dendritic styrene macromonomer (DS). The molecular weights and compositions of the obtained block copolymers were determined by 1H NMR analysis. The copolymers with relatively narrow polydispersities (1.27–1.38) were thus obtained. The bulk properties of comb‐dendronized block copolymers were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). Similar to dendronized homopolymers, the block copolymers exhibited hexagonal columnar liquid‐crystalline phase structure. By using such amphiphilic comb‐dendronized block copolymers as building blocks, the rich self‐assembly morphologies, such as twisted string, vesicle, and large compound micelle (LCM), were obtained in a mixture of CH3OH and THF. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of rod–coil diblock copolymers, consisting of poly{2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} as a rigid segment and poly(n‐butyl acrylate) as a flexible part, were successfully prepared through two inverse procedures by atom transfer radical polymerization. The copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography and had high molecular weights and relatively narrow polydispersities (polydispersity index < 1.20). All the block copolymers synthesized had two distinct glass‐transition temperatures according to differential scanning calorimetry. A polarizing optical microscopy investigation demonstrated the liquid crystallinity of the diblock copolymers. The self‐assembly behaviors in dilute solutions was studied by transmission electron microscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 5935–5943, 2005  相似文献
