Suppose that in a domain R(, B) of variables (r, ): (0 r , 1 +B(r–r 0 ) 2–B(r–r0), where > 0, B > 0, 1 < 0 < 2 are numbers) a metric ds2 = dr2 +G(r, )d 2 and a function k(r, ) are given. The problem of isometrically immersing ds2 in E 4 with prescribed Gaussian torsion is considered. A straight line grid embedding of a plane graph G is a drawing of G such that the vertices are drawn at grid points and the edges are drawn as nonintersecting straight line segments. In this paper we show that if a 4-connected plane graph G has at least four vertices on its external face, then G can be embedded on a grid of size such that and , where n is the number of vertices of G. Recently, Lindner showed that every partial 4-cycle system of order n and index 1 could be embedded in a 4-cycle system of order ν and index 1 with v ≤ 2n + 15. While the technique he used does not immediately extend to any higher index, here we develop his ideas to show that every partial 4-cycle system of order n and index λ can be embedded in a 4-cycle system of order v and index λ for all λ-admissible . This improves on the best known bounds of v = 4n and v = 8n + 1 when λ > 1 is even and odd respectively.  相似文献

We consider a family of left invariant semi- Riemannian metrics on some extension of the Heisenberg group by the real line (denoted by ). We find a 3-dimensional foliation, which is minimal but not totally geodesic with respect to all the metrics of this family. Other two 3-dimensional totally geodesic (isometric) foliations on are determined. We consider also a non-holonomic 3-dimensional distribution, admitting integral surfaces which are totally geodesic in the ambiant space . Two of them are isomorphic with the two-dimensional non-commutative Lie group (which is not totally geodesic in the additive Lie groupR 4!). Following the different possible choices of the signatures of the metrics and the sign of the parameters, we put in evidence twelve new classes of invariant spacetime structures onR 4, together with their energy-momenta.  相似文献

In phylogenetic analysis, a standard problem is to approximate a given metric by an additive metric. Here it is shown that, given a metric D defined on some finite set X and a nonexpansive map f : X → , the one-parameter family of the Gromov transforms DΔ,f of D relative to f and Δ that starts with D for large values of Δ and ends with an additive metric for Δ = 0 consists exclusively of metrics. It is expected that this result will help to better understand some standard tree reconstruction procedures considered in phylogenetic analysis.  相似文献

Some problems in the theory of R-closed spaces are solved by showing that every regular space can be embedded in a minimal regular space and there is an R-closed space with no coarser minimal regular topology. A class of spaces is found so that when fed into the Jone's machinery for producing non-Tychonoff, regular spaces, the output is non-tychonoff R-closed and minimal regular spaces. Also, an example of a strongly minimal regular space that is not locally R-closed is given.  相似文献

The basic topological facts about closed curves in R2 and triangulability of surfaces are used to prove the folk theorem that any surface embedding of a graph is combinatorial. A basic technical lemma for this proof (a version of what it means to apply scissors to an embedded graph) is then used to give a rigourous definition of the combinatorial boundary of a face and also to introduce a combinatorial definition of equivalence of embeddings. This latter definition is on the one hand easily seen to correspond correctly to the natural topological notion of equivalence, and on the other hand to give equivalence classes in 1-1 correspondence with the classes coming from combinatorial definitions of earlier authors.  相似文献
