This paper examines location assignment for outbound containers in container terminals. It is an extension to the previous modeling work of Kim et al. (2000) and Zhang et al. (2010). The previous model was an “optimistic” handling way and gave a moderate punishment for placing a lighter container onto the top of a stack already loaded with heavier containers. Considering that the original model neglected the stack height and the state-changing magnitude information when interpreting the punishment parameter and hid too much information about the specific configurations for a given stack representation, we propose two new “conservative” allocation models in this paper. One considers the stack height and the state-changing magnitude information by reinterpreting the punishment parameter and the other further considers the specific configurations for a given stack representation. Solution qualities for the “optimistic” and the two “conservative” allocation models are compared on two performance indicators. The numerical experiments indicate that both the first and second “conservative” allocation models outperform the original model in terms of the two performance indicators. In addition, to overcome computational difficulties encountered by the dynamic programming algorithm for large-scale problems, an approximate dynamic programming algorithm is presented as well.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to optimize the benchmarks and prioritize the variables of decision-making units (DMUs) in data envelopment analysis (DEA) model. In DEA, there is no scope to differentiate and identify threats for efficient DMUs from the inefficient set. Although benchmarks in DEA allow for identification of targets for improvement, it does not prioritize targets or prescribe level-wise improvement path for inefficient units. This paper presents a decision tree based DEA model to enhance the capability and flexibility of classical DEA. The approach is illustrated through its application to container port industry. The method proceeds by construction of multiple efficient frontiers to identify threats for efficient/inefficient DMUs, provide level-wise reference set for inefficient terminals and diagnose the factors that differentiate the performance of inefficient DMUs. It is followed by identification of significant attributes crucial for improvement in different performance levels. The application of this approach will enable decision makers to identify threats and opportunities facing their business and to improve inefficient units relative to their maximum capacity. In addition, it will help them to make intelligent investment on target factors that can improve their firms’ productivity.  相似文献

This paper studies the interactions between crane handling and truck transportation in a maritime container terminal by addressing them simultaneously. Yard trucks are shared among different ships, which helps to reduce empty truck trips in the terminal area. The problem is formulated as a constraint programming model and a three-stage algorithm is developed. At the first stage, crane schedules are generated by a heuristic method. At the second stage, the multiple-truck routing problem is solved based on the precedence relations of the transportation tasks derived from the first stage. At the last stage a complete solution is constructed by using a disjunctive graph. The three procedures are linked by an iterative structure, which facilitates the search for a good solution. The computational results indicate that the three-stage algorithm is effective for finding high-quality solutions and can efficiently solve large problems.  相似文献

Due to the dramatic increase in the world’s container traffic, the efficient management of operations in seaport container terminals has become a crucial issue. In this work, we focus on the integrated planning of the following problems faced at container terminals: berth allocation, quay crane assignment (number), and quay crane assignment (specific). First, we formulate a new binary integer linear program for the integrated solution of the berth allocation and quay crane assignment (number) problems called BACAP. Then we extend it by incorporating the quay crane assignment (specific) problem as well, which is named BACASP. Computational experiments performed on problem instances of various sizes indicate that the model for BACAP is very efficient and even large instances up to 60 vessels can be solved to optimality. Unfortunately, this is not the case for BACASP. Therefore, to be able to solve large instances, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for generating an optimal solution of BACASP from an optimal solution of BACAP using a post-processing algorithm. In case this condition is not satisfied, we make use of a cutting plane algorithm which solves BACAP repeatedly by adding cuts generated from the optimal solutions until the aforementioned condition holds. This method proves to be viable and enables us to solve large BACASP instances as well. To the best of our knowledge, these are the largest instances that can be solved to optimality for this difficult problem, which makes our work applicable to realistic problems.  相似文献

Due to the variety of technical equipments and terminal layouts, research has produced a multitude of optimization models for seaside operations planning in container terminals. To provide a support in modeling problem characteristics and in suggesting applicable algorithms this paper reviews the relevant literature. For this purpose new classification schemes for berth allocation problems and quay crane scheduling problems are developed. Good scaling is an essential requirement for the good behavior of many numerical algorithms. In particular, for problems involving multivariate polynomials, a change of scale in one or more variable may have drastic effects on the robustness of subsequent calculations. This paper studies the problem of improving the operations efficiency for retrieving inbound containers in a modern automatic container terminal. In the terminal, when an external truck arrives to collect a container stored in a specific container block, it waits at one end of the block where an automatic stack crane will retrieve the container and deliver it to the truck. With the aim of reducing the expected external truck waiting time which is determined by how the containers are stored in a block, we propose two correlated approaches for the operations efficiency improvement, (1) by designing an optimized block space allocation to store the inbound containers after they are discharged from vessels, and (2) by conducting overnight re-marshaling processes to re-organize the block space allocation after some containers are retrieved. For the block space allocation problem, we consider three optimization models under different strategies of storing containers, namely, a non-segregation model, a single-period segregation model, and a multiple-period segregation model. Optimal solution methods are proposed for all three models. For the re-marshaling problem with a given time limit, we find that the problem is NP-hard and develop a heuristic algorithm to solve the problem. We then use simulation to validate our models and solution approaches. Simulation results reveal important managerial insights such as the advantage of the multiple-period segregation over the myopic single-period segregation, the possibility of overflow of the segregation model, and the benefit of re-marshaling.  相似文献

Inbound and outbound containers are temporarily stored in the storage yard at container terminals. A combination of container demand increase and storage yard capacity scarcity create complex operational challenges for storage yard managers. This paper presents an in-depth overview of storage yard operations, including the material handling equipment used, and highlights current industry trends and developments. A classification scheme for storage yard operations is proposed and used to classify scientific journal papers published between 2004 and 2012. The paper also discusses and challenges the current operational paradigms on storage yard operations. Lastly, the paper identifies new avenues for academic research based on current trends and developments in the container terminal industry.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling jobs in a flowshop with two batch processing machines such that the makespan is minimized. Batch processing machines are frequently encountered in many industrial environments such as heat treatment operations in a steel foundry and chemical processes performed in tanks or kilns. Improved Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) models are presented for the flowshop problem with unlimited or zero intermediate storage. An MILP-based heuristic is also developed for the problem. Computational experiments show that the new MILP models can significantly improve the original ones. Also, the heuristic can obtain the optimal solutions for all the test problem instances.  相似文献

This paper proposes algorithms for minimizing a continuously differentiable functionf(x): n subject to the constraint thatx does not lie in specified bounded subsets of n . Such problems arise in a variety of applications, such as tolerance design of electronic circuits and obstacle avoidance in the selection of trajectories for robot arms. Such constraints have the form . The function is not continuously differentiable. Algorithms based on the use of generalized gradients have considerable disadvantages because of the local concavity of at points where the set {j|g j (x)=(x)} has more than one element. The problem tackled in this paper deals with products of a finite number of triangular matrices in Max-Plus algebra, and more precisely with an optimization problem related to the product order. We propose a polynomial time optimization algorithm for 2×2 matrices products. We show that the problem under consideration generalizes numerous scheduling problems, like single machine problems or two-machine flow shop problems. Then, we show that for 3×3 matrices, the problem is NP-hard and we propose a branch-and-bound algorithm, lower bounds and upper bounds to solve it. We show that an important number of results in the literature can be obtained by solving the presented problem, which is a generalization of single machine problems, two- and three-machine flow shop scheduling problems. The branch-and-bound algorithm is tested in the general case and for a particular case and some computational experiments are presented and discussed.  相似文献

This is a summary of the author’s PhD thesis, supervised by Pierre L’Ecuyer and Roberto Musmanno and defended on 21 February 2008 at the Università della Calabria. The thesis is written in English and is available from the author upon request. This work deals with the comparison of simulation-based algorithms for solving the agents scheduling problem in a multiskill call center minimizing their costs under service levels constraints. A solution approach, combining simulation, with integer or linear programming, and cut generation, is proposed. Considering realistic problems, it performs better than the two-step approach proposed in the literature. It is also shown that a randomized search, extending the one defined for the single-period staffing problem in Avramidis et al. [IIE Trans (in press), 2008], yields highly suboptimal solutions. Finally, an extension of the cutting plane method to directly control the probability on the customers abandonments is designed.   相似文献

We derive first- and second-order necessary optimality conditions for set-constrained optimization problems under the constraint qualification-type conditions significantly weaker than Robinson’s constraint qualification. Our development relies on the so-called 2-regularity concept, and unifies and extends the previous studies based on this concept. Specifically, in our setting constraints are given by an inclusion, with an arbitrary closed convex set on the right-hand side. Thus, for the second-order analysis, some curvature characterizations of this set near the reference point must be taken into account.   相似文献

Three constraint qualifications (the weak generalized Robinson constraint qualification, the bounded constraint qualification, and the generalized Abadie constraint qualification), which are weaker than the generalized Robinson constraint qualification (GRCQ) given by Yen (1997) [1], are introduced for constrained Lipschitz optimization problems. Relationships between those constraint qualifications and the calmness of the solution mapping are investigated. It is demonstrated that the weak generalized Robinson constraint qualification and the bounded constraint qualification are easily verifiable sufficient conditions for the calmness of the solution mapping, whereas the proposed generalized Abadie constraint qualification, described in terms of graphical derivatives in variational analysis, is weaker than the calmness of the solution mapping. Finally, those constraint qualifications are written for a mathematical program with complementarity constraints (MPCC), and new constraint qualifications ensuring the C-stationary point condition of a MPCC are obtained.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the constrained optimization problem. A detailed discussion of surrogate constraints with zero duality gaps is presented. Readily available surrogate multipliers are considered that close the duality gaps where constraints are rational-valued. Through illustrative examples, the sources of duality gaps are examined in detail. While in the published literature, in many situations conclusions have been made about the existence of non-zero duality gaps, we show that taking advantage of full problem information can close the duality gaps. Overlooking such information can produce shortcomings in the research in which a non-zero duality gap is observed. We propose theorems to address the shortcomings and report results regarding implementation issues.  相似文献

The scheduling problem in a container terminal is characterized by the coordination of different types of equipment. In this paper, we present an integrated model to schedule the equipment. The objective is to minimize the makespan, or the time it takes to serve a given set of ships. The problem is formulated as a Hybrid Flow Shop Scheduling problem with precedence and Blocking constraints (HFSS-B). A tabu search algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. Certain mechanisms are developed and introduced into the algorithm to assure its quality and efficiency. The performance of the tabu search algorithm is analyzed from the computational point of view.  相似文献

Constraint qualifications in terms of approximate Jacobians are investigated for a nonsmooth constrained optimization problem, in which the involved functions are continuous but not necessarily locally Lipschitz. New constraint qualifications in terms of approximate Jacobians, weaker than the generalized Robinson constraint qualification (GRCQ) in Jeyakumar and Yen [V. Jeyakumar, N.D. Yen, Solution stability of nonsmooth continuous systems with applications to cone-constrained optimization, SIAM J. Optim. 14 5 (2004) 1106-1127], are introduced and some examples are provided to show the utility of constrained qualifications introduced. The consideration of electromagnetic field sources in potential formulations necessitates the definition of source fields. Such source fields are first defined for both volume and boundary constraints in static electromagnetic models. Then, automatic procedures are proposed to conveniently and efficiently characterize discrete source fields, with regard to their use in finite element formulations, their supports, their direct expression requiring no pre-computation, and their associated constraints. In this paper, a new augmented Lagrangian function is introduced for solving nonlinear programming problems with inequality constraints. The relevant feature of the proposed approach is that, under suitable assumptions, it enables one to obtain the solution of the constrained problem by a single unconstrained minimization of a continuously differentiable function, so that standard unconstrained minimization techniques can be employed. In this paper we use the penalty approach in order to study constrained minimization problems in a Banach space with nonsmooth nonconvex mixed constraints. A penalty function is said to have the exact penalty property [J.-B. Hiriart-Urruty, C. Lemarechal, Convex Analysis and Minimization Algorithms, Springer, Berlin, 1993] if there is a penalty coefficient for which a solution of an unconstrained penalized problem is a solution of the corresponding constrained problem.
