In order to examine the influence of initial bubble conditions on bubble rise motion, two-dimensional direct numerical simulations of the motion of a gas bubble rising in viscous liquids were carried out by a coupled level set/volume-of-fluid (CLSVOF) method. For dimensionless groups predicting a “spherical-cap bubble shape” (high Eötvös and low Morton numbers), we have found computationally that solutions depend on initial bubble conditions. Specifically, for spherical-cap bubble areas, we could obtain computational results of toroidal bubbles or spherical-cap bubbles depending on initial bubble conditions. On the other hand, we showed for low Eo and high M conditions that initial bubble conditions did not affect the final state of bubble rise motion.  相似文献

Aspect ratios E of ellipsoidal bubbles in infinite stagnant clean liquids are measured for log M = −6.6, −5.5, −4.9 and −3.9, where M is the Morton number. An empirical correlation of E applicable to a wide range of the Morton number is proposed by making use of the present data and Sugihara's data at log M = −11 (2007). The aspect ratio in this correlation is expressed in terms of the combination of the Eötvös number and the bubble Reynolds number to account for the effects of the inertial, viscous, buoyant and surface tension forces on E. Terminal velocities of ellipsoidal bubbles are accurately predicted by using the proposed correlation and a drag correlation proposed by Rastello et al. (2011).  相似文献

Lift coefficients, CL, of single bubbles in linear shear flows are measured to investigate effects of the bubble shape, the liquid velocity gradient and the fluid property on CL. The range of the Morton number, M, tested is from logM = − 6.6 to − 3.2. The shapes of bubbles are spherical and ellipsoidal. A correlation of bubble aspect ratio for single bubbles in infinite stagnant liquids proposed in our previous study can give good evaluations for bubbles in the linear shear flows. The CL of spherical bubbles at low bubble Reynolds numbers, Re, depend on the dimensionless shear rate Sr and Re and decrease with increasing Re. These characteristics agree with the Legendre-Magnaudet correlation. The use of a single dimensionless group such as Re, the Eötvös number, the Weber number and the Capillary number cannot correlate CL of non-spherical bubbles. The trend of the critical Re for the reversal of the sign of CL is the same as that for the onset of oscillation of bubble motion, which supports the mechanism proposed by Adoua et al., at least within the range of −6.6 ≤ logM ≤ −3.2. An experimental database of CL is provided for validation of available CL models and CFD.  相似文献

Liquid metal is an important type of energy transport carrier in nuclear reactors, such as in accelerator-driven sub-critical systems, fusion reactors and spallation neutron source devices. It is necessary to conduct research for bubbles rising in a liquid metal under different magnetic field intensities. The Perspex container is positioned concentrically inside a transverse magnetic field, which provides a homogeneous DC longitudinal magnetic field that passes through the fluid district. The coils are supplied with maximum field strength of 1.97 T. The equivalent diameter of the bubble is 3.1–5.6 mm. The Ultrasonic Doppler Velocimetry (UDV) method is used to evaluate the internal flow velocity of opaque liquid metals. Research shows that the influence of the Lorenz force on the bubble ascension velocity is not simply positive or negative. The magnetic field inhibits the ascension velocity of small bubbles with diameters of 3.1 mm and 3.4 mm. The terminal velocity for large bubbles with diameters of 4.57 mm, 5.15 mm and 5.6 mm is higher under a weak magnetic field than without a magnetic field. The positive effect happens under strong magnetic intensity. The target is to obtain the hydro-dynamical relationships between the terminal velocity, drag coefficient, the Eötvös number, Reynolds number, and Stuart number in a strong magnetic field using a multiple regression method to reveal that the mechanism of the induced current's restraining influence determines the ascension velocity of the bubble in viscous electric liquids with a strong magnetic field.  相似文献

The interaction between Taylor bubbles rising in stagnant non-Newtonian solutions was studied. Aqueous solutions of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and polyacrylamide (PAA) polymers were used to study the effect of different rheological properties: shear viscosity and viscoelasticity. The solutions studied covered a range of Reynolds numbers between 10 and 714, and Deborah numbers up to 14. The study was performed with pairs of Taylor bubbles rising in a vertical column (0.032 m internal diameter) filled with stagnant liquid. The velocities of the leading and trailing bubbles were measured by sets of laser diodes/photocells placed along the column. The velocity of the trailing bubble was analysed together with the liquid velocity profile in the wake of a single rising bubble (Particle Image Velocimetry data obtained from the literature). For the less concentrated CMC solutions, with moderate shear viscosity and low viscoelasticity, the interaction between Taylor bubbles was similar to that found in Newtonian fluids. For the most concentrated CMC solution, which has high shear viscosity and moderate viscoelasticity, a negative wake forms behind the Taylor bubbles, inhibiting coalescence since the bubbles maintain a minimum distance of about 1D between them. For the PAA solutions, with moderate shear viscosity but higher viscoelasticity than the CMC solutions, longer wake lengths are seen, which are responsible for trailing bubble acceleration at greater distances from the leading bubble. Also in the PAA solutions, the long time needed for the fluid to recover its initial shear viscosity after the passage of the first bubble makes the fluid less resistant to the trailing bubble flow. Hence, the trailing bubble can travel at a higher velocity than the leading bubble, even at distances above 90D.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to examine the effect of bubbles on the turbulence levels of a water jet. Simultaneous measurements of the axial and radial velocity components were taken in a bubbly jet with a Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) and then compared to the velocities of a single phase jet at the same liquid flow rate. Mean bubble diameters ranged from 0.6 to 2 mm and the void fractions were up to about 20%. The liquid Reynolds numbers were from 5,000 to 10,000 approximately. The measurements extended to from an axial distance of 4–12 cm. It was observed that bubbles did not affect significantly the average velocity profiles in the jet. However bubbles increased the turbulence intensities in the core of the jet near the jet exit. The increase in turbulence intensities was more pronounced at lower Reynolds numbers and at higher void fractions.  相似文献

An experimental study to evaluate the dynamic performance of three different types of cavitation bubbles is conducted. An ultrasonic transducer submerged into the working fluids of a scroll expander is utilised to produce cavitation bubbles and a high speed camera device is used to capture their behaviour. Three critical regions around the ultrasonic source, between the source and the solid boundary, and across the solid boundary were observed. Experimental results revealed that refrigerant bubbles sustain a continuous oscillatory movement, referenced as “wobbling effect”, without regularly collapsing. Analytical results indicate the influence of several factors such as surface tension/viscosity ratio, Reynolds number and Weber number which interpret that particular behaviour of the refrigerant bubbles. Within the refrigerant environment the bubbles obtain large Reynolds numbers and low Weber numbers. In contrast, within the lubricant and the water environment Weber number is significantly higher and Reynolds number substantially lower. The bubble radius and velocity alterations are accurately calculated during the cavitation process. Lubricant bubbles achieve the highest jet velocity while refrigerant bubbles having the lowest jet velocity are not considered as a destructive mean of cavitation for scroll expander systems.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to investigate the wake properties of a single gas bubble in a three-dimensional liquid-solid fluidized bed via a video camera moving at the same speed as the bubble. The solids holdup in the fluidized bed varied up to around 10%. The bubble size varied from 5 to 20 mm with corresponding bubble Reynolds numbers ranging from 1000 to 6500. The bubble was observed to have two types of wake configurations depending on the bubble size: the asymmetric/helical vortex wake for small bubbles and the symmetric wake for large bubbles. The bubble shape and relative rise velocity in the fluidized bed can be well-represented by correlations developed for single bubbles in liquid media, although the bubble shape in liquid-solid media is slightly more flattened compared to that in liquid media. The bubble rocking frequency was found to be independent of particle properties and to correspond in magnitude to the vortex shedding frequency in a two-dimensional liquid-solid fluidized bed. The average primary wake size in three dimensions is comparable to that in two dimensions.  相似文献

The motion of large drops with Eötvos numbers as high as 1000 has been investigated in large tanks where wall effects are negligible. Shapes observed include ellipsoidal- and spherical-caps with and without skirts, crescents, biconcave disks, toroids and wobbling irregular forms. The ellipsoidal-cap drops are shown to obey an equation based upon an extension of the Davies and Taylor theory for bubbles in liquids, regardless of whether skirts are being formed and shed at the rear.  相似文献

A study has been made of the motion of long bubbles in inclined pipes containing viscous Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids. A semi-theoretical expression for the rise velocity of air bubbles in water is derived on the hypothesis that the dominant factor is the momentum exchange of the bubble underflow, i.e. the bubble nose shape. The correlation calls on empirical inputs from established literature on bubble rise speeds at high Reynolds number. The effects of increasing Newtonian viscosity are analysed with reference to the momentum exchange and it is shown how viscosity reduces the inclination dependence of the bubble Froude number. Results from an experimental survey in seven different non-Newtonian liquids in three different diameter pipes are presented. These data are correlated so as to decouple the effects of surface tension and viscosity. An empirical relation is proposed for the effective shear rate in the fluid travelling around the bubble nose. Our correlation is compared to literature data from a broad range of Reynolds numbers with excellent agreement except at shallow angles.  相似文献

Terminal velocities and shapes of drops rising through vertical pipes in clean and fully-contaminated systems are measured by using a high-speed video camera and an image processing method. Silicon oils and glycerol water solutions are used for the dispersed and continuous phases, respectively. Triton X-100 is used for surfactant. Clean and contaminated drops take either spherical, spheroidal or deformed spheroidal shapes when the diameter ratio λ is less than a critical value, λC, whereas they take bullet shapes for λ > λC (Taylor drops). The applicability of available drag and Froude number correlations is examined through comparisons with the measured data. Effects of surfactant on the shape and terminal velocity of a Taylor drop are also discussed based on the experimental data and interface tracking simulations. The conclusions obtained are as follows: (1) drag and Froude number correlations proposed so far give reasonable estimations of the terminal velocities of clean drops at any λ, (2) the terminal velocities of contaminated drops are well evaluated by making the viscosity ratio μ* infinity in the drag correlation for clean drops in the viscous force dominant regime, (3) the effects of surfactant on the shape and terminal velocity of a Taylor drop become significant as the Eötvös number, EoD, decreases and μ* increases, and (4) the reduction in surface tension due to the addition of surfactant would be the cause of the increase in the terminal velocity and elongation of a contaminated Taylor drop.  相似文献

In this paper we present an experimental study on the influence of surface active agents (surfactants) on Taylor bubble flow in a vertical millimeter-size channel. Moreover we give a short review on the subject and previous investigations. We investigated the shape and dissolution rate of individual elongated carbon dioxide Taylor bubbles, which were hydraulically fixed in a downward flow of water. Bubble shape and dissolution rate was determined from microfocus X-ray radiographs. From the shrinking rate we calculated the liquid side mass transfer coefficient. The results show that the presence of surfactants causes a change of the bubble shape and leads to a slight increase of the liquid film thickness around the bubble and as a result the elongation of contaminated bubbles. In addition, the comparison of clean and contaminated bubbles indicate that presence of surfactant has a more significant impact on the dissolution rate of small bubbles. Furthermore, applying different concentrations of surfactant reveals that in our case, where surface coverage ratio of surfactant on the bubbles is high, increase of contamination does not have a noticeable influence on the mass transfer coefficient of bubbles.  相似文献

The hydrodynamics and diffusion of an admixture near an isolated bubble, which simulates the rise of either a chain of identical bubbles or a system of regularly arranged bubbles of the same volume, are analyzed by solving the Navier-Stokes equations numerically. Data are presented for a specific liquid. It is shown that in both cases the maximum flow velocity on the surface of identical bubbles is practically the same, although in the former case the ascent velocity is considerably higher. The stationary admixture diffusion from a bubble also proves to be nearly the same.In relation to the bubbling of a gas through a liquid layer, it is shown that the total admixture diffusion is maximum for regularly arranged bubbles whose diameter is comparable with the liquids capillary constant. Although the flow past the bubble remains continuous, the values of the hydrodynamic parameters are no longer small.Novosibirsk. An approximate analysis is given of the dispersion of gas bubbles that rise at large Reynolds number through large-scale homogeneous, isotropic turbulence, characterized by the Kraichnan energy-spectrum function. A fairly well-established equation of motion of the bubbles, originally proposed by Thomas et al. [16], is used to derive a closed set of equations for the components of the dispersion tensor of the bubbles in a manner analogous to that used by Saffman [12] for fluid particles and by Pismen and Nir [10, 11] for solid particles. The equations are then solved to obtain the diffusivities and the intensities of bubble velocity fluctuations. Analytical solutions are compared with results from simulations of the bubble motion in a Gaussian random velocity field.  相似文献

An experimental technique for the measurement of the local slip velocity of spherical bubbles is reported. It is based on the measurement of the local liquid velocity by an electrodiffusional method, and the bubble velocity by a specially adapted LDA (Laser Doppler anemometer) with a short measuring volume. The bubble velocity is measured taking into account the shift between the bubble centre and the centre of the LDA measuring volume. The slip velocity is obtained by subtracting the liquid velocity from the bubble velocity at the point corresponding to the bubble centre. The technique is applicable for flows with high velocity gradients. Results of the slip velocity measurements in an upward bubbly flow at laminar pipe Reynolds numbers are presented. This paper identifies laminar separation bubbles at the root or span-wise midsection of a rectangular wing using direct surface pressure measurements in the wind tunnel and analyses their behavior at different Reynolds numbers and angles of attack. The separation, transition, and reattachment locations are determined as functions of the angles of attack and the Reynolds number. The transition structure and turbulence characteristics in the separated shear layer are studied using laser Doppler velocimetry. Surface pressure data and simultaneously acquired velocity signals are correlated to show the pattern of growing disturbances in the shear layer. Surface oil flow visualizations clarified the wingtip and separation bubble’s interactions near the leading edge of the wing at the higher angles of attack. Turbulence statistics are also calculated from the streamwise velocity distributions, and an apparent deviation is observed for the skewness and flatness values from the normal distributions in the near-wall region. The separation bubble effect on aerodynamic coefficients of a 3D rectangular wing root section is studied and reported.

Axisymmetrically stable turbulent Taylor vortices between two concentric cylinders are studied with respect to the transition from vortex to wall driven turbulent production. The outer cylinder is stationary and the inner cylinder rotates. A low Reynolds number turbulence model using the kω formulation, facilitates an analysis of the velocity gradients in the Taylor–Couette flow. For a fixed inner radius, three radius ratios 0.734, 0.941 and 0.985 are employed to identify the Reynolds number range at which this transition occurs. At relatively low Reynolds numbers, turbulent production is shown to be dominated by the outflowing boundary of the Taylor vortex. As the Reynolds number increases, shear driven turbulence (due to the rotating cylinder) becomes the dominating factor. For relatively small gaps turbulent flow is shown to occur at Taylor numbers lower than previously reported. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
