The aim of this paper is to extend the classical maximal convergence theory of Bernstein and Walsh for holomorphic functions in the complex plane to real analytic functions in ℝ N . In particular, we investigate the polynomial approximation behavior for functions F:L→ℂ, L={(Re z,Im z):zK}, of the structure F=g[`(h)]F=g\overline{h}, where g and h are holomorphic in a neighborhood of a compact set K⊂ℂ N . To this end the maximal convergence number ρ(S c ,f) for continuous functions f defined on a compact set S c ⊂ℂ N is connected to a maximal convergence number ρ(S r ,F) for continuous functions F defined on a compact set S r ⊂ℝ N . We prove that ρ(L,F)=min {ρ(K,h)),ρ(K,g)} for functions F=g[`(h)]F=g\overline{h} if K is either a closed Euclidean ball or a closed polydisc. Furthermore, we show that min {ρ(K,h)),ρ(K,g)}≤ρ(L,F) if K is regular in the sense of pluripotential theory and equality does not hold in general. Our results are based on the theory of the pluricomplex Green’s function with pole at infinity and Lundin’s formula for Siciak’s extremal function Φ. A properly chosen transformation of Joukowski type plays an important role.  相似文献

LetG be a finitely generated group acting on anR-treeT. First assume that the action is free, and minimal (there is no proper invariant subtree), or more generally that it satisfies a certain finiteness condition. Then it may be described as agraph of transitive actions: the action may be recovered from a finite graph, together with additional data; in particular, every vertexv carries an action (G v, Tv) whose orbits are dense. For the action (G, T), it follows for instance that the closure of any orbit is a discrete union of closed subtrees: it cannot meet a segment in a Cantor set. Now let ℓ be the length function for an arbitrary action ofG. For ɛ>0 small enough, the subgroupG(ɛ)⊂G generated by elementsg withg is independent of ɛ, andG/G(ɛ) is free. Several interpretations are given for the rank ofG/G(ɛ).  相似文献

For a large class of infinite discrete semigroups, we prove that right cancellative points in β S can have arbitrary norms or sizes. More precisely, if for x∈β S, we let ||x||= min{|A| : x
}, and for each infinite cardinal κ, we let P κ (S)={x∈β S : ||x||=κ} then the set of points in P κ (S) which are right cancellative in β S has an interior which is dense in P κ (S). The method to prove this result enables us also to calculate the already known cardinal of the pairwise disjoint left ideals in β S : 2^ 2 |S| . We give an application to the Banach algebra ∈fty (S) * , by showing that the vector space dimension of any non-zero right ideal in this algebra is at least 2^ 2 |S| .  相似文献

Let G be a reductive group acting on an affine variety X, let xX be a point whose G-orbit is not closed, and let S be a G-stable closed subvariety of X which meets the closure of the G-orbit of x but does not contain x. In this paper we study G. R. Kempf’s optimal class Ω G (x; S) of cocharacters of G attached to the point x; in particular, we consider how this optimality transfers to subgroups of G. Suppose K is a G-completely reducible subgroup of G which fixes x, and let H = C G (K)0. Our main result says that the H-orbit of x is also not closed, and the optimal class Ω H (x; S) for H simply consists of the cocharacters in Ω G (x; S) which evaluate in H. We apply this result in the case that G acts on its Lie algebra via the adjoint representation to obtain some new information about cocharacters associated with nilpotent elements in good characteristic.  相似文献

For a finite abelian group G and a positive integer d, let s d(G) denote the smallest integer ∈ℕ0 such that every sequence S over G of length |S|≧ has a nonempty zero-sum subsequence T of length |T|≡0 mod d. We determine s d(G) for all d≧1 when G has rank at most two and, under mild conditions on d, also obtain precise values in the case of p-groups. In the same spirit, we obtain new upper bounds for the Erdős–Ginzburg–Ziv constant provided that, for the p-subgroups G p of G, the Davenport constant D(G p ) is bounded above by 2exp  (G p )−1. This generalizes former results for groups of rank two.  相似文献

We shall study the biflatness of the convolution algebra  1(S) for a semigroup S. We show that for any semigroup S such that  1(S) is biflat the canonical partial ordering on the idempotents must be uniformly locally finite. We use this to characterize the biflatness of  1(S) for an inverse semigroup S.  相似文献

Let K be a field and S=K[x 1,…,x n ]. In 1982, Stanley defined what is now called the Stanley depth of an S-module M, denoted sdepth (M), and conjectured that depth (M)≤sdepth (M) for all finitely generated S-modules M. This conjecture remains open for most cases. However, Herzog, Vladoiu and Zheng recently proposed a method of attack in the case when M=I/J with JI being monomial S-ideals. Specifically, their method associates M with a partially ordered set. In this paper we take advantage of this association by using combinatorial tools to analyze squarefree Veronese ideals in S. In particular, if I n,d is the squarefree Veronese ideal generated by all squarefree monomials of degree d, we show that if 1≤dn<5d+4, then sdepth (I n,d )=⌊(nd)/(d+1)⌋+d, and if d≥1 and n≥5d+4, then d+3≤sdepth (I n,d )≤⌊(nd)/(d+1)⌋+d.  相似文献

The weight-spectrumSp(w, X) of a spaceX is the set of weights of all infinite closed subspaces ofX. We prove that ifκ>ω is regular andX is compactT 2 withω(X)κ then some λ withκ≤λ≤2 is inSp(ω, X). Under CH this implies that the weight spectrum of a compact space can not omitω 1, and thus solves problem 22 of [M]. Also, it is consistent with 2ω=c being anything it can be that every countable closed setT of cardinals less thanc withω ∈ T satisfiesSp(w, X)=T for some separable compact LOTSX. This shows the independence from ZFC of a conjecture made in [AT]. Research supported by OTKA grant no. 1908.  相似文献

Let G = (V,E) be a graph and let S V. The set S is a packing in G if the vertices of S are pairwise at distance at least three apart in G. The set S is a dominating set (DS) if every vertex in VS is adjacent to a vertex in S. Further, if every vertex in VS is also adjacent to a vertex in VS, then S is a restrained dominating set (RDS). The domination number of G, denoted by γ(G), is the minimum cardinality of a DS of G, while the restrained domination number of G, denoted by γr(G), is the minimum cardinality of a RDS of G. The graph G is γ-excellent if every vertex of G belongs to some minimum DS of G. A constructive characterization of trees with equal domination and restrained domination numbers is presented. As a consequence of this characterization we show that the following statements are equivalent: (i) T is a tree with γ(T)=γr(T); (ii) T is a γ-excellent tree and TK2; and (iii) T is a tree that has a unique maximum packing and this set is a dominating set of T. We show that if T is a tree of order n with ℓ leaves, then γr(T) ≤ (n + ℓ + 1)/2, and we characterize those trees achieving equality.  相似文献

A Banach space X will be called extensible if every operator EX from a subspace EX can be extended to an operator XX. Denote by dens X. The smallest cardinal of a subset of X whose linear span is dense in X, the space X will be called automorphic when for every subspace EX every into isomorphism T: EX for which dens X/E = dens X/TE can be extended to an automorphism XX. Lindenstrauss and Rosenthal proved that c 0 is automorphic and conjectured that c 0 and ℓ2 are the only separable automorphic spaces. Moreover, they ask about the extensible or automorphic character of c 0(Γ), for Γ uncountable. That c 0(Γ) is extensible was proved by Johnson and Zippin, and we prove here that it is automorphic and that, moreover, every automorphic space is extensible while the converse fails. We then study the local structure of extensible spaces, showing in particular that an infinite dimensional extensible space cannot contain uniformly complemented copies of ℓ n p , 1 ≤ p < ∞, p ≠ 2. We derive that infinite dimensional spaces such as L p (μ), p ≠ 2, C(K) spaces not isomorphic to c 0 for K metric compact, subspaces of c 0 which are not isomorphic to c 0, the Gurarij space, Tsirelson spaces or the Argyros-Deliyanni HI space cannot be automorphic. For a monomial ideal IS = K[x 1...,x n ], we show that sdepth(S/I) ≥ ng(I), where g(I) is the number of the minimal monomial generators of I. If I =νI′, where νS is a monomial, then we see that sdepth(S/I) = sdepth(S/I′). We prove that if I is a monomial ideal IS minimally generated by three monomials, then I and S/I satisfy the Stanley conjecture. Given a saturated monomial ideal IK[x 1,x 2,x 3] we show that sdepth(I) = 2. As a consequence, sdepth(I) ≥ sdepth(K[x 1,x 2,x 3]//I) +1 for any monomial ideal in IK[x 1,x 2,x 3].  相似文献

Let S⊂ℝ k+m be a compact semi-algebraic set defined by P 1≥0,…,P ≥0, where P i ∈ℝ[X 1,…,X k ,Y 1,…,Y m ], and deg (P i )≤2, 1≤i. Let π denote the standard projection from ℝ k+m onto ℝ m . We prove that for any q>0, the sum of the first q Betti numbers of π(S) is bounded by (k+m) O(q ). We also present an algorithm for computing the first q Betti numbers of π(S), whose complexity is . For fixed q and , both the bounds are polynomial in k+m. The author was supported in part by an NSF Career Award 0133597 and a Sloan Foundation Fellowship.  相似文献

Using the continuum hypothesis, we construct a compact spaceK such that ℓ(K) possesses the Grothendieck property, but such that the unit ball of ℓ(K)′ does not containβ N, and hence, in particular, such thatl (N) is neither a subspace nor quotient of ℓ(K). In particular,K does not contain a convergent sequence but does not containβ N.   相似文献

Let G be a graph and SV(G). We denote by α(S) the maximum number of pairwise nonadjacent vertices in S. For x, yV(G), the local connectivity κ(x, y) is defined to be the maximum number of internally-disjoint paths connecting x and y in G. We define . In this paper, we show that if κ(S) ≥ 3 and for every independent set {x 1, x 2, x 3, x 4} ⊂ S, then G contains a cycle passing through S. This degree condition is sharp and this gives a new degree sum condition for a 3-connected graph to be hamiltonian.  相似文献

LetY be a Banach space, 1<p<∞. We give a simple criterion for embedding ℓ p Y, namely it suffices that the positive cone ℓ p +Y. This result is applied to the study of highly smooth operators from ℓ p intoY (p is not an even integer). The main result is that every such operator has a harmonic behaviour unless ℓ p/K Y for someK ∈ ℕ. Supported by grants GAUK 277/2001, GAČR 201-01-1198, A1019205.  相似文献

Let X be an infinite-dimensional Banach space with weight τ. By Cld AW (X), we denote the hyperspace of nonempty closed sets in X with the Attouch—Wets topology. By Fin AW (X), Comp AW (X) and Bdd AW (X), we denote the subspaces of Cld AW (X) consisting of finite sets, compact sets and bounded closed sets, respectively. In this paper, it is proved that Fin AW (X)≈Comp AW (X)≈ℓ2(τ)×ℓ2 f ℓandℓBdd AW (X)≈ℓ2(2τ)×ℓ2 f where ≈ means ‘is homeomorphic to’, ℓ2(τ) is the Hilbert space with weight τ (ℓ2(ℵ0)=ℓ2 the separable Hilbert space) and ℓ2 f ={(x i ) iεN εℓ2x i =0 except for finitely many iεN}.  相似文献

IfG andH are graphs, let us writeG→(H)2 ifG contains a monochromatic copy ofH in any 2-colouring of the edges ofG. Thesize-Ramsey number r e(H) of a graphH is the smallest possible number of edges a graphG may have ifG→(H)2. SupposeT is a tree of order |T|≥2, and lett 0,t 1 be the cardinalities of the vertex classes ofT as a bipartite graph, and let Δ(T) be the maximal degree ofT. Moreover, let Δ0, Δ1 be the maxima of the degrees of the vertices in the respective vertex classes, and letβ(T)=T 0Δ0+t 1Δ1. Beck [7] proved thatβ(T)/4≤r e(T)=O{β(T)(log|T|)12}, improving on a previous result of his [6] stating thatr e(T)≤Δ(T)|T|(log|T|)12. In [6], Beck conjectures thatr e(T)=O{Δ(T)|T|}, and in [7] he puts forward the stronger conjecture thatr e(T)=O{β(T)}. Here, we prove the first of these conjectures, and come quite close to proving the second by showing thatr e(T)=O{β(T)logΔ(T)}.  相似文献

We study the setP X of scalarsp such thatL p is lattice-isomorphically embedded into a given rearrangement invariant (r.i.) function spaceX[0, 1]. Given 0<αβ<∞, we construct a family of Orlicz function spacesX=L F [0, 1], with Boyd indicesα andβ, whose associated setsP X are the closed intervals [γ, β], for everyγ withαγβ. In particular forα>2, this proves the existence of separable 2-convex r.i. function spaces on [0,1] containing isomorphically scales ofL p -spaces for different values ofp. We also show that, in general, the associated setP X is not closed. Similar questions in the setting of Banach spaces with uncountable symmetric basis are also considered. Thus, we construct a family of Orlicz spaces ℓ F (I), with symmetric basis and indices fixed in advance, containing ℓ p (Γ-subspaces for differentp’s and uncountable Λ⊂I. In contrast with the behavior in the countable case (Lindenstrauss and Tzafriri [L-T1]), we show that the set of scalarsp for which ℓ p (Γ) is isomorphic to a subspace of a given Orlicz space ℓ F (I) is not in general closed. AssumeV=L. Let κ be a cardinal and forX⊆κ, n<ω let α n (X) denote the least ordinal α such thatL α[X] is Σ n admissible. In our earlier paperUncountable admissibles I: forcing, we characterized those ordinals of the form σ n (X) when κ is regular. This paper treats the singular case using Barwise compactness, an effective version of Jensen's covering lemma and β-recursion theory.  相似文献

Let K⊂ℝ d (d≥ 1) be a compact convex set and Λ a countable Abelian group. We study a stochastic process X in K Λ, equipped with the product topology, where each coordinate solves a SDE of the form dX i (t) = ∑ j a(ji) (X j (t) −X i (t))dt + σ (X i (t))dB i (t). Here a(·) is the kernel of a continuous-time random walk on Λ and σ is a continuous root of a diffusion matrix w on K. If X(t) converges in distribution to a limit X(∞) and the symmetrized random walk with kernel a S (i) = a(i) + a(−i) is recurrent, then each component X i (∞) is concentrated on {xK : σ(x) = 0 and the coordinates agree, i.e., the system clusters. Both these statements fail if a S is transient. Under the assumption that the class of harmonic functions of the diffusion matrix w is preserved under linear transformations of K, we show that the system clusters for all spatially ergodic initial conditions and we determine the limit distribution of the components. This distribution turns out to be universal in all recurrent kernels a S on Abelian groups Λ. Received: 10 May 1999 / Revised version: 18 April 2000 / Published online: 22 November 2000  相似文献
