Comparisons were made between 10 singers and 10 nonsingers with vocal nodules and two control groups of normals, 10 singers and 10 nonsingers, on a wide range of acoustic, aerodynamic, psychoacoustic, and videostroboscopic measures. Results showed significant differences between the normals and those with nodules as well as differences between the singers and nonsingers. The singers with nodules had smaller nodules, less impairment of vibratory function, and less severe vocal symptoms than their nonsinging counterparts. The singing normals were found to be superior to the nonsinging normals on acoustic measures including jitter, shimmer, and signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, the singers, even in the presence of nodules, had superior maximum performance skills than their nonsinging counterparts.  相似文献

Vocal attack time (VAT) is the time lag between the growth of the sound pressure signal and the development of physical contact of vocal folds at vocal initiation. It can be derived by a cross-correlation of short-time amplitude changes occurring in the sound pressure and electroglottographic (EGG) signals. Cantonese is a tone language in which tone determines the lexical meaning of the syllable. Such linguistic function of tone has implications for the physiology of tone production. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible effects of Cantonese tones on VAT. Sound pressure and EGG signals were simultaneously recorded from 59 native Cantonese speakers (31 females and 28 males). The subjects were asked to read aloud 12 disyllabic words comprising homophone pairs of the six Cantonese lexical tones. Results revealed a gender difference in VAT values, with the mean VAT significantly smaller in females than in males. There was also a significant difference in VAT values between the two tone categories, with the mean VAT values of the three level tones (tone 1, 3, and 6) significantly smaller than those of the three contour tones (tone 2, 4, and 5). The findings support the notion that norms and interpretations based on nontone European languages may not be directly applied to tone languages.  相似文献

The aged population is at risk for impaired speech communication due to the increased likelihood of deterioration of central nervous system (CNS) processes that underlie cognition, language, and/or speech motor control. Vocal reaction time (RT) may provide a means of quantifying the efficiency of CNS processes that underlie speech production. The present study used a simple RT paradigm to investigate effects of the complexity of the required task on vocal RT in normal young and aged speakers. Task complexity was represented by two levels: a single word and a short sentence. Only the aged subjects showed a significant task complexity effect on vocal RT. Furthermore, the between-group RT difference increased as a function of task complexity. Specific causes for the increase in vocal RT for the aged subjects are presently unknown, but likely reside in altered respiratory biomechanics and reduced efficiency of CNS motor processing.  相似文献

This study investigated changes in maximum phonation time andacoustic and perceptual measures of voice following topical anesthesia and laryngeal endoscopy with the flexible endoscope. Forty-four females, aged 18–33 years and with normal voices, performed four vocal tasks: (a) 3-second /i/ prolongation, (b) maximum phonation time on /i/, (c) stepwise scale-singing, and (d) reading a standard passage. Subjects performed these tasks prior to anesthesia, after anesthesia, and again during laryngeal endoscopy. Voice samples were analyzed for jitter, shimmer, harmonic-to-noise ratio, speaking fundamental frequency, maximum phonational frequency range, maximum phonation time, harshness, and breathiness. Results demonstrated significant reductions in maximum phonational frequency range following anesthesia and, during laryngeal endoscopy, reductions in maximum phonation time and increases in speaking fundamental frequency, minimum fundamental frequency on scale-singing, and breathiness. Clinicians using laryngeal endoscopy for evaluation and management of vocal dysfunction should, therefore, consider the possible effects of these procedures on vocal functioning.  相似文献

This study investigates cross-speaker differences in the factors that predict voicing thresholds during abduction-adduction gestures in six normal women. Measures of baseline airflow, pulse amplitude, subglottal pressure, and fundamental frequency were made at voicing offset and onset during intervocalic /h/, produced in varying vowel environments and at different loudness levels, and subjected to relational analyses to determine which factors were most strongly related to the timing of voicing cessation or initiation. The data indicate that (a) all speakers showed differences between voicing offsets and onsets, but the degree of this effect varied across speakers; (b) loudness and vowel environment have speaker-specific effects on the likelihood of devoicing during /h/; and (c) baseline flow measures significantly predicted times of voicing offset and onset in all participants, but other variables contributing to voice timing differed across speakers. Overall, the results suggest that individual speakers have unique methods of achieving phonatory goals during running speech. These data contribute to the literature on individual differences in laryngeal function, and serve as a means of evaluating how well laryngeal models can reproduce the range of voicing behavior used by speakers during running speech tasks.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to provide data on the ability of elderly listeners to estimate the age group of women (25-35, 45-55, 70-80) from phonated and whispered vowel productions. Further, comparisons were made between the performance of these elderly listeners and results for young listeners reported previously [S. E. Linville and H. Fisher, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 78, 40-48 (1985)]. Tape recordings of whispered and normally phonated /ae/ vowels were played to 23 elderly women for relative age judgments. Results suggest that elderly women are not as accurate as young women in estimating age from sustained vowel productions, although the two listener groups tend to categorize individual speakers similarly. Further, it appears that listener age is a factor in acoustic cues used in making age judgments.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of noise on voice profile statistics from female samples. Six young adult females served as subjects. Five had normal voices; one had a pathological voice with accompanying bilateral vocal nodules. Each female subject was required to match a generated 235 Hz tone (+/- 2 Hz) while maintaining a constant output level of 70 dB SPL (+/- 5 dB). Data collected from a previous study involving a normal male subject were included for comparative purposes. Noise was generated from a personal computer fan which had a strong center frequency component at 235 Hz. Six different A-weighted signal-to-noise [S/N(A)] conditions were created, ranging in 5 dB increments from 25 to 0 dB. Results revealed that fundamental frequency was reasonably resistant to the effects of noise and to the effects of the noisy (pathological) voice signal. Jitter and shimmer estimates generally increased as noise floors elevated. The greatest amount of measurement error was found for the pathological female voice when captured in the presence of environmental noise. Findings are discussed relative to clinical issues surrounding measurement error.  相似文献

A noninvasive pressure-flow technique was used to assess laryngeal airway resistance (Rlaw) in eight young adult women and seven men. Syllable structures used were consonant-vowel (/pi/) and consonant-vowel-consonant (/bip/). The data were obtained from oscillographic records of intraoral air pressure and transglottal airflow over 2 consecutive days. Repetitions of each syllable context were produced at each subject's 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles of vocal sound pressure level. No significant differences in Rlaw were found across days for the two groups. Women had significantly greater Rlaw than did men for the /pi/ and /bip/ contexts. Men showed a significantly greater average airflow rate than did women for both syllable contexts. Airflow, air pressure, and the ratio Rlaw increased as the sound pressure level of voice increased. The technique appears to be useful for characterizing certain features of laryngeal airway resistance for men and women.  相似文献

Posterior closure insufficiency of the glottis is often mentioned in connection with permanent voice disorders. Recently published studies have revealed that an incomplete closure of the glottis can be found also in normal-speaking voices, especially in women. However, the effect of glottal closure configuration on vocal efficacy is not sufficiently clarified. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of glottal closure configuration on singing and speaking voice characteristics. Overall, 520 young female normal-speaking subjects were examined by videostroboscopy for different phonation conditions in the combination of soft, loud, low, and/or high phonation and by voice range profile measurements. According to the videostroboscopic analysis, the subjects were subdivided into four groups: complete closure of the vocal folds already in soft phonation (group 1), closure of the vocal fold with increasing intensity (group 2), persistent closure insufficiencies despite increasing intensity (group 3), and hourglass-shaped closure in subjects with vocal nodules (group 4). Subjects in which the glottal closure could not be evaluated sufficiently were subclassified into group 5 (missing values).

Selected criteria of the singing and speaking voice were evaluated and statistically processed according to the mentioned subclassification. Group 1 reached significantly the highest sound pressure levels (SPLmax) for the singing voice as well as for the shouting voice. Group 3 showed a limited capacity to increase the intensity of the singing and speaking voice. The results gathered in this study objectify the relationship of insufficient glottal closure and reduced vocal capabilities. As long as no conclusive data on long-term consequences of insufficient glottal closure are available, a prophylactic improvement of the laryngeal situation especially in female professional voice users by voice therapy should be recommended.  相似文献

This study investigates long-term features and utterance contours of fundamental frequency (f0) derived from the German Alcohol Language Corpus. The corpus comprises read, spontaneous, and command&control speech uttered by 148 speakers of both genders and various age groups when sober and intoxicated. f0 median, f0 range, and f0 contours are analyzed for intoxication and interactions with gender and age. Contours are compared both directly (root mean squared error, statistical correlation, or the Euclidean distance in the spectral space of the contour) and by parameterization of the contour using discrete cosine transform and the first and second moment of the lower contour spectrum. Results partly confirm earlier findings, i.e., f0 average and range are mostly raised with intoxication, and also suggest that the majority of speakers do not follow a general trend, but show idiosyncratic alterations to f0. f0 contours differ significantly with intoxication, but a more detailed analysis could not assign these changes to specific general form changes like decline or curvature. The results suggest that it is not possible to predict intoxication from f0 in a single model across different speakers. Instead a speaker-dependent model to account for the individual speaker behavior is proposed.  相似文献

Acoustic measurements believed to reflect glottal characteristics were made on recordings collected from 21 male speakers. The waveforms and spectra of three nonhigh vowels (/ae, lambda, epsilon/) were analyzed to obtain acoustic parameters related to first-formant bandwidth, open quotient, spectral tilt, and aspiration noise. Comparisons were made with previous results obtained for 22 female speakers [H. M. Hanson, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 101, 466-481 (1997)]. While there is considerable overlap across gender, the male data show lower average values and less interspeaker variation for all measures. In particular, the amplitude of the first harmonic relative to that of the third formant is 9.6 dB lower for the male speakers than for the female speakers, suggesting that spectral tilt is an especially significant parameter for differentiating male and female speech. These findings are consistent with fiberscopic studies which have shown that males tend to have a more complete glottal closure, leading to less energy loss at the glottis and less spectral tilt. Observations of the speech waveforms and spectra suggest the presence of a second glottal excitation within a glottal period for some of the male speakers. Possible causes and acoustic consequences of these second excitations are discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the amount of variation for several vocal parameters across three times of the day (morning, noon, and afternoon). Connected speech samples from normal adult males (N = 10) and females (N = 10) were recorded during morning, early afternoon, and late afternoon. Results showed that males produced a statistically significant increase in speaking fundamental frequency (SFF) from morning to afternoon. Females did not demonstrate a statistically significant change in SFF across the three time periods. Vocal amplitude did not change significantly for either group. The SFF variability was higher for the females than for the males. Analysis of individual data revealed that the patterns of vocal change across the three times of day were not consistent among the subjects.  相似文献

Subglottal pressure is one of the main voice control factors, controlling vocal loudness. In this investigation the effects of subglottal pressure variation on the voice source in untrained female and male voices phonating at a low, a middle, and a high fundamental frequency are analyzed. The subjects produced a series of /pae/ syllables at varied degrees of vocal loudness, attempting to keep pitch constant. Subglottal pressure was estimated from the oral pressure during the /p/ occlusion. Ten subglottal pressure values, approximately equidistantly spaced within the pressure range used, were identified, and the voice source of the vowels following these pressure values was analyzed by inverse filtering the airflow signal as captured by a Rothenberg mask. The maximum flow declination rate (MFDR) was found to increase linearly with subglottal pressure, but a given subglottal pressure produced lower values for female than for male voices. The closed quotient increased quickly with subglottal pressure at low pressures and slowly at high pressures, such that the relationship can be approximated by a power function. For a given subglottal pressure value, female voices reached lower values of closed quotient than male voices.  相似文献

The hearing thresholds of 37 young adults (18-26 years) were measured at 13 frequencies (8, 9,10,...,20 kHz) using a newly developed high-frequency audiometer. All subjects were screened at 15 dB HL at the low audiometric frequencies, had tympanometry within normal limits, and had no history of significant hearing problems. The audiometer delivers sound from a driver unit to the ear canal through a lossy tube and earpiece providing a source impedance essentially equal to the characteristic impedance of the tube. A small microphone located within the earpiece is used to measure the response of the ear canal when an impulse is applied at the driver unit. From this response, a gain function is calculated relating the equivalent sound-pressure level of the source to the SPL at the medial end of the ear canal. For the subjects tested, this gain function showed a gradual increase from 2 to 12 dB over the frequency range. The standard deviation of the gain function was about 2.5 dB across subjects in the lower frequency region (8-14 kHz) and about 4 dB at the higher frequencies. Cross modes and poor fit of the earpiece to the ear canal prevented accurate calibration for some subjects at the highest frequencies. The average SPL at threshold was 23 dB at 8 kHz, 30 dB at 12 kHz, and 87 dB at 18 kHz. Despite the homogeneous nature of the sample, the younger subjects in the sample had reliably better thresholds than the older subjects. Repeated measurements of threshold over an interval as long as 1 month showed a standard deviation of 2.5 dB at the lower frequencies (8-14 kHz) and 4.5 dB at the higher frequencies.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the temporal characteristics of nasalization in relation to (1) languages, (2) vowel contexts, and (3) age groups. Two distinct acoustic energies from the mouth and nose were recorded during speech production (/pamap, pimip, pumup/) using two microphones to obtain the absolute and proportional measurements on the acoustic temporal characteristics of nasalization. Twenty-eight normal adults (14 American English and 14 Korean speakers) and 28 normal children (14 American English and 14 Korean speakers) participated in this study. In both languages, adults showed shorter duration of nasalization than children within all three vowel contexts. The high vowel context revealed longer duration of nasalization than the low vowel context in both languages. There was no significant difference of temporal characteristics of nasalization between American English and Korean. Nasalization showed different timing characteristics between children and adults across vowel contexts. The results are discussed in association with developmental coarticulation and the relationship between acoustic consequences of articulatory events and vowel height.  相似文献

Coarticulation studies in speech of deaf individuals have so far focused on intrasyllabic patterning of various consonant-vowel sequences. In this study, both inter- and intrasyllabic patterning were examined in disyllables /symbol see text #CVC/ and the effects of phonetic context, speaking rate, and segment type were explored. Systematic observation of F2 and durational measurements in disyllables minimally contrasting in vocalic ([i], [u,][a]) and in consonant ([b], [d]) context, respectively, was made at selected locations in the disyllable, in order to relate inferences about articulatory adjustments with their temporal coordinates. Results indicated that intervocalic coarticulation across hearing and deaf speakers varied as a function of the phonetic composition of disyllables (b_b or d_d). The deaf speakers showed reduced intervocalic coarticulation for bilabial but not for alveolar disyllables compared to the hearing speakers. Furthermore, they showed less marked consonant influences on the schwa and stressed vowel of disyllables compared to the hearing controls. Rate effects were minimal and did not alter the coarticulatory patterns observed across hearing status. The above findings modify the conclusions drawn from previous studies and suggest that the speech of deaf and hearing speakers is guided by different gestural organization.  相似文献

Measurements on the inverse filtered airflow waveform and of estimated average transglottal pressure and glottal airflow were made from syllable sequences in low, normal, and high pitch for 25 male and 20 female speakers. Correlation analyses indicated that several of the airflow measurements were more directly related to voice intensity than to fundamental frequency (F0). Results suggested that pressure may have different influences in low and high pitch in this speech task. It is suggested that unexpected results of increased pressure in low pitch were related to maintaining voice quality, that is, avoiding vocal fry. In high pitch, the increased pressure may serve to maintain vocal fold vibration. The findings suggested different underlying laryngeal mechanisms and vocal adjustments for increasing and decreasing F0 from normal pitch.  相似文献
