We prove that an invariant of closed 3-manifolds, called the block number, which is defined via flow-spines, equals the Heegaard genus, except for S 3 and S 2 × S 1. We also show that the underlying 3-manifold is uniquely determined by a neighborhood of the singularity of a flow-spine. This allows us to encode a closed 3-manifold by a sequence of signed labeled symbols. The behavior of the encoding under the connected sum and a criterion for reducibility are studied.  相似文献

We say that an oriented contact manifold (M,ξ) is Milnor fillable if it is contactomorphic to the contact boundary of an isolated complex-analytic singularity (X,x). In this article we prove that any three-dimensional oriented manifold admits at most one Milnor fillable contact structure up to contactomorphism. The proof is based on Milnor open books: we associate an open book decomposition of M with any holomorphic function f:(X,x)→(C,0), with isolated singularity at x and we verify that all these open books carry the contact structure ξ of (M,ξ)—generalizing results of Milnor and Giroux.  相似文献

We give a complete characterization of those closed orientable 4-manifolds which admit smooth maps into R 3 with only fold singularities. We also clarify the relationship between the existence problem of fold maps and that of linearly independent vector fields on manifolds.  相似文献

We prove that the LMO-invariant of a 3-manifold of rank one is determined by the Alexander polynomial of the manifold, and conversely, that the Alexander polynomial is determined by the LMO-invariant. Furthermore, we show that the Alexander polynomial of a null-homologous knot in a rational homology 3-sphere can be obtained by composing the weight system of the Alexander polynomial with the ?rhus invariant of knots. We study the topological structure and the homeomorphism problem for closed 3-manifolds M(n,k) obtained by pairwise identifications of faces in the boundary of certain polyhedral 3-balls. We prove that they are (n/d)-fold cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere branched over certain hyperbolic links of d+1 components, where d= (n/k). Then we study the closed 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgeries on the components of these links. Received: 27 November 1998 / Accepted: 12 May 1999  相似文献

We study the topological structure of all 3-manifolds obtained by surgery along principal fibers of a closed orientable -manifold. As a consequence, we give alternative proofs of some classical results due to W. Heil and L. Moser. Moreover, we completely specify the Seifert invariants for the considered manifolds. Finally we classify the manifolds obtained by surgery along certain Seifert links and determine geometric presentations of their fundamental groups.Work performed under the auspices of C.N.R. It is known by Loi and Piergallini that a closed, oriented, smooth 3-manifold is Stein fillable if and only if it has a positive open book decomposition. In the present paper we will show that for every link L in a Stein fillable 3-manifold there exists an additional knot L to L such that the link LL is the binding of a positive open book decomposition of the Stein fillable 3-manifold. To prove the assertion, we will use the divide, which is a generalization of real morsification theory of complex plane curve singularities, and 2-handle attachings along Legendrian curves.  相似文献

The Kontsevich integral of a knot is a graph-valued invariant which (when graded by the Vassiliev degree of graphs) is characterized by a universal property; namely it is a universal Vassiliev invariant of knots. We introduce a second grading of the Kontsevich integral, the Euler degree, and a geometric null-move on the set of knots. We explain the relation of the null-move to S-equivalence, and the relation to the Euler grading of the Kontsevich integral. The null-move leads in a natural way to the introduction of trivalent graphs with beads, and to a conjecture on a rational version of the Kontsevich integral, formulated by the second author and proven in Geom. Top 8 (2004) 115 (see also Kricker, preprint 2000, math/GT.0005284).  相似文献

We study 5-dimensional Riemannian manifolds that admit an almost contact metric structure. We classify these structures by their intrinsic torsion and review the literature in terms of this scheme. Moreover, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of metric connections with vectorial, totally skew-symmetric or traceless cyclic torsion that are compatible with the almost contact metric structure. Finally, we examine explicit examples of almost contact metric 5-manifolds from this perspective.  相似文献

We use branched surfaces to define an equivalence relation on C1 codimension one foliations of any closed orientable 3-manifold that are transverse to some fixed nonsingular flow. There is a discrete metric on the set of equivalence classes with the property that foliations that are sufficiently close (up to equivalence) share important topological properties.  相似文献

Let a cyclic group $G$ act either on a number field $\mathbb L$ or on a $3$-manifold $M$. Let $s_{\mathbb L}$ be the number of ramified primes in the extension $\mathbb L^G\subset \mathbb L$ and $s_M$ be the number of components of the branching set of the branched covering $M\to M/G$. In this paper, we prove several formulas relating $s_{\mathbb L}$ and $s_M$ to the induced $G$-action on $Cl(\mathbb L)$ and $H_1(M),$ respectively. We observe that the formulas for $3$-manifolds and number fields are almost identical, and therefore, they provide new evidence for the correspondence between $3$-manifolds and number fields postulated in arithmetic topology.  相似文献

Given a knot in an integer homology sphere, one can construct a family of closed 3-manifolds (parameterized by the positive integers), namely the cyclic branched coverings of the knot. In this paper, we give a formula for the Casson-Walker invariants of these 3-manifolds in terms of residues of a rational function (which measures the 2-loop part of the Kontsevich integral of a knot) and the signature function of the knot. Our main result actually computes the LMO invariant of cyclic branched covers in terms of a rational invariant of the knot and its signature function.  相似文献

We generalize Turaev's definition of torsion invariants of pairs (M,&\xi;), where M is a 3-dimensional manifold and &\xi; is an Euler structure on M (a non-singular vector field up to homotopy relative to ∂M and modifications supported in a ball contained in Int(M)). Namely, we allow M to have arbitrary boundary and &\xi; to have simple (convex and/or concave) tangency circles to the boundary. We prove that Turaev's H 1(M)-equivariance formula holds also in our generalized context. Using branched standard spines to encode vector fields we show how to explicitly invert Turaev's reconstruction map from combinatorial to smooth Euler structures, thus making the computation of torsions a more effective one. Euler structures of the sort we consider naturally arise in the study of pseudo-Legendrian knots (i.e.~knots transversal to a given vector field), and hence of Legendrian knots in contact 3-manifolds. We show that torsion, as an absolute invariant, contains a lifting to pseudo-Legendrian knots of the classical Alexander invariant. We also precisely analyze the information carried by torsion as a relative invariant of pseudo-Legendrian knots which are framed-isotopic.
