Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been used to investigate the nucleation and stability of iron clusters on the Al2O3/Ni3Al(1 1 1) surface as a function of coverage and annealing temperature. We show that atomic beam deposition of iron leads to hexagonally ordered cluster arrangements with a distance of 24 Å between the clusters evidencing the template effect of the alumina film. The shape of the iron clusters is two-dimensional (2D) at deposition temperatures from 130 K to 160 K and three-dimensional (3D) at 300 K. However, the 2D iron clusters grown between 130 K and 160 K are stable up to 350 K.  相似文献

The stabilization of the unstable, polar copper terminated Cu2O(1 1 1) surface by reconstruction and hydroxylation was studied theoretically with static and molecular dynamics calculations at ab initio density functional theory (DFT) level. Surface reconstruction was investigated using extensive finite temperature molecular dynamics (MD) combined with a simulated annealing technique. Both the global minimum energy structure obtained during annealing the system at higher temperature (300 K) and the final ‘quenched’ structure which was obtained after cooling the system to 0 K show the expected reconstruction of the adsorbate-free surface. The copper atoms in the first layer and oxygen atoms in the second and third layers are markedly displaced, and the atomic planes merge together to form a uniform mixed layer, thereby minimizing the polarity of the surface. Surface hydroxylation by adsorption of OH or dissociated water was investigated using static optimization at 0 K. The results show that adsorption is exothermic and that the reconstruction characterizing the annealed OH-free surface does not occur in the presence of adsorbed OH. A surface coverage of 50% results in the surface structure that is the closest to the unrelaxed bulk terminated surface.  相似文献

The adsorption of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) on Cu(1 1 1) was studied by means of low-temperature scanning microscopy. At very low coverage, individual molecules are randomly distributed over the surface. Increasing the coverage, the molecules align in chains before forming ordered domains with a rectangular unit cell. The molecules are centered on top of a copper atom aligning two opposite lobes with a principal axis of the substrate. The topographic images of the molecules show a reduction of the fourfold to a twofold symmetry. At negative sample bias, a switching between two states at a typical rate of 500 Hz is observed for isolated molecules, which are neither adsorbed at defects nor forming chains or domains.  相似文献

Au/TiO2/Ru(0 0 0 1) model catalysts and their interaction with CO were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and different surface spectroscopies. Thin titanium oxide films were prepared by Ti deposition on Ru(0 0 0 1) in an O2 atmosphere and subsequent annealing in O2. By optimizing the conditions for deposition and post-treatment, smooth films were obtained either as fully oxidized TiO2 or as partly reduced TiOx, depending on the preparation conditions. CO adsorbed molecularly on both oxidized and reduced TiO2, with slightly stronger bonding on the reduced films. Model catalyst surfaces were prepared by depositing submonolayer quantities of Au on the films and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, a weak interaction between the Au and the TiO2 substrate was found. At 100 K CO adsorption occurred on both the TiO2 film and on the Au nanoparticles. CO desorbed from the Au particles with activation energies between 53 and 65 kJ/mol, depending on the Au coverage. If the Au deposit was annealed to 770 K prior to CO exposure, the CO adsorption energy decreased significantly. STM measurements revealed that the Au particles grow upon annealing, but are not encapsulated by TiOx suboxides. The higher CO adsorption energy observed for smaller Au coverages and before annealing is attributed to a significantly stronger interaction of CO with mono- and bilayer Au islands, while for higher particles, the adsorption energy becomes more bulk-like. The implications of these effects on the known particle size effects in CO oxidation over supported Au/TiO2 catalysts are discussed.  相似文献

We have investigated a BC3 covered NbB2(0 0 0 1) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The STM images reveal characteristic features of a Moiré pattern reflecting an incommensurate relation of the BC3 sheet with the substrate: bright protrusions with the periodicity of the substrate lattice are modulated in intensity with the periodicity of the BC3 lattice. As a result, the surface exhibits nm-scale patchy regions with either the √3 × √3 or the 1 × 1 structure of the substrate. The two-dimensional Fourier transformation pattern of the STM image is consistent with the LEED pattern proving the epitaxial and incommensurate relationship between BC3 surface sheet and substrate. No feature of a predicted superconducting gap was found in STS spectra measured at 5 K.  相似文献

The formation, stability and CO adsorption properties of PdAg/Pd(1 1 1) surface alloys were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by adsorption of CO probe molecules, which was characterized by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). The PdAg/Pd(1 1 1) surface alloys were prepared by annealing (partly) Ag film covered Pd(1 1 1) surfaces, where the Ag films were deposited at room temperature. Surface alloy formation leads to a modification of the electronic properties, evidenced by core-level shifts (CLSs) of both the Pd(3d) and Ag(3d) signal, with the extent of the CLSs depending on both initial Ag coverage and annealing temperature. The role of Ag pre-coverage and annealing temperature on surface alloy formation is elucidated. For a monolayer Ag covered Pd(1 1 1) surface, surface alloy formation starts at ∼450 K, and the resulting surface alloy is stable upon annealing at temperatures between 600 and 800 K. CO TPD and HREELS measurements demonstrate that at 120 K CO is exclusively adsorbed on Pd surface atoms/Pd sites of the bimetallic surfaces, and that the CO adsorption behavior is dominated by geometric ensemble effects, with adsorption on threefold hollow Pd3 sites being more stable than on Pd2 bridge sites and finally Pd1 a-top sites.  相似文献

The growth of Co on thin Al2O3 layers on Ni3Al(1 0 0) was investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy, high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and scanning tunneling microscopy. At 300 K, Co grows in three-dimensional clusters on top of the Al2O3 layer. A defect structure of the alumina layer plays a crucial role during the early stage of Co growth. After deposition of 10 Å of Co, a complete screening of the dipoles of the Al2O3 layer due to the Co film is found in the EELS measurements. Annealing the Co film reveals a process of coalescence of Co clusters and, above 700 K, diffusion of the Co atoms through the oxide film into the substrate takes place.  相似文献

Well ordered V2O3(0 0 0 1) films were prepared on Au(1 1 1) and W(1 1 0) substrates. These films are terminated by a layer of vanadyl groups under typical UHV conditions. Reduction by electron bombardment may remove the oxygen atoms of the vanadyl layer, leading to a surface terminated by vanadium atoms. The interaction of oxygen with the reduced V2O3(0 0 0 1) surface has been studied in the temperature range from 80 to 610 K. Thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS), high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) were used to study the adsorbed oxygen species. Low temperature adsorption of oxygen on reduced V2O3(0 0 0 1) occurs both dissociatively and molecularly. At 90 K a negatively charged molecular oxygen species is observed. Upon annealing the adsorbed oxygen species dissociates, re-oxidizing the reduced surface by the formation of vanadyl species. Density functional theory was employed to calculate the structure and the vibrational frequencies of the O2 species on the surface. Using both cluster and periodic models, the surface species could be identified as η2-peroxo () lying flat on surface, bonded to the surface vanadium atoms. Although the O-O vibrational normal mode involves motions almost parallel to the surface, it can be detected by infrared spectroscopy because it is connected with a change of the dipole moment perpendicular to the surface.  相似文献

V2O3(0 0 0 1) films have been grown epitaxially on Au(1 1 1) and W(1 1 0). Under typical UHV conditions these films are terminated by a layer of vanadyl groups as has been shown previously [A.-C. Dupuis, M. Abu Haija, B. Richter, H. Kuhlenbeck, H.-J. Freund, V2O3(0 0 0 1) on Au(1 1 1) and W(1 1 0): growth, termination and electronic structure, Surf. Sci. 539 (2003) 99]. Electron irradiation may remove the oxygen atoms of this layer. H2O adsorption on the vanadyl terminated surface and on the reduced surface has been studied with thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), vibrational spectroscopy (IRAS) and electron spectroscopy (XPS) using light from the BESSY II electron storage ring in Berlin. It is shown that water molecules interact only weakly with the vanadyl terminated surface: water is adsorbed molecularly and desorbs below room temperature. On the reduced surface water partially dissociates and forms a layer of hydroxyl groups which may be detected on the surface up to T ∼ 600 K. Below ∼330 K also co-adsorbed molecular water is detected. The water dissociation products desorb as molecular water which means that they recombine before desorption. No sign of surface re-oxidation could be detected after desorption, indicating that the dissociation products desorb completely.  相似文献

Adsorption and desorption of methanol on a CeO2(1 1 1)/Cu(1 1 1) thin film surface was investigated by XPS and soft X-ray synchrotron radiation PES. Resonance PES was used to determine the occupancy of the Ce 4f states with high sensitivity. Methanol adsorbed at 110 K formed adsorbate multilayers, which were partially desorbed at 140 K. Low temperature desorption was accompanied by formation of chemisorbed methoxy groups. Methanol strongly reduced cerium oxide by forming hydroxyl groups at first, which with increasing temperature was followed by creation of oxygen vacancies in the topmost cerium oxide layer due to water desorption. Dissociative methanol adsorption and creation of oxygen vacancies was observed as a Ce4+ → Ce3+ transition and an increase of the Ce 4f electronic state occupancy.  相似文献

The morphological change of D2O layers on a Ru(0 0 0 1) surface has been investigated on the basis of He atom scattering. With the increase of D2O exposure on Ru(0 0 0 1) at 111 K, the intensity of a specularly reflected He beam continuously decreases up to the exposure of 1.0 L (Langmuir). At the D2O coverage of 1.0 adsorbed layer (∼1.5 L), which is characterized by temperature-programmed desorption measurements, the formation of the (√3 × √3)R30° superstructure as a result of the diffusion of D2O on the surface was confirmed by He atom diffraction. With the further increase of D2O exposure, at 2-3 adsorbed layers, the disordered structure was found to be on the surface at 111 K. The morphological change of the disordered layers was observed during annealing, and discussed in detail.  相似文献

The growth of submonolayer Pt on Ru(0 0 0 1) has been studied with scanning tunneling microscopy. We focus on the island evolution depending on Pt coverage θPt, growth temperature TG and post-growth annealing temperature TA. Dendritic trigonal Pt islands with atomically rough borders are observed at room temperature and moderate deposition rates of about 5 × 10−4 ML/s. Two types of orientation, rotated by 180° and strongly influenced by minute amounts of oxygen are observed which is ascribed to nucleation starting at either hcp or fcc hollow sites. The preference for fcc sites changes to hcp in the presence of about one percent of oxygen. At lower growth temperatures Pt islands show a more fractal shape. Generally, atomically rough island borders smooth down at elevated growth temperatures higher than 300 K, or equivalent annealing temperatures. Dendritic Pt islands, for example, transform into compact, almost hexagonal islands, indicating similar step energies of A- and B-type of steps. Depending on the Pt coverage the thermal evolution differs somewhat: While regular islands on Ru(0 0 0 1) are formed at low coverages, vacancy islands are observed close to completion of the Pt layer.  相似文献

We present the growth morphology, the long-range ordering, and the evolution of the valence band electronic states of ultrathin films of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) deposited on the Au(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) reconstructed surface, as a function of the organic molecule coverage. The low energy electron diffraction patterns present a (5 × 3) reconstruction from the early adsorption stages. High-resolution UV photoelectron spectroscopy data show the disappearance of the Au surface states related to the (1 × 2) reconstruction, and the presence of new electronic features related to the molecule-substrate interaction and to the CuPc molecular states. The CuPc highest occupied molecular orbital gradually emerges in the valence band, while the interface electronic states are quenched, upon increasing the coverage.  相似文献

The adsorption and diffusion of isolated H2O and D2O molecules on Pd(1 1 1) were studied using scanning tunneling microscopy at low temperature (∼40 K). At low tunneling voltage the diffusion is thermally activated. The diffusion rate is enhanced by several orders of magnitude when the tunneling electron has enough energy to excite the vibrational “scissor” mode of the molecule. An isotope effect was observed in the threshold voltage for electron-assisted diffusion of H2O and D2O.  相似文献

STM, STS, LEED and XPS data for crystalline θ-Al2O3 and non-crystalline Al2O3 ultra-thin films grown on NiAl(0 0 1) at 1025 K and exposed to water vapour at low pressure (1 × 10−7-1 × 10−5 mbar) and room temperature are reported. Water dissociation is observed at low pressure. This reactivity is assigned to the presence of a high density of coordinatively unsaturated cationic sites at the surface of the oxide film. The hydroxyl/hydroxide groups cannot be directly identify by their XPS binding energy, which is interpreted as resulting from the high BE positions of the oxide anions (O1s signal at 532.5-532.8 eV). However the XPS intensities give evidence of an uptake of oxygen accompanied by an increase of the surface coverage by Al3+ cations, and a decrease of the concentration in metallic Al at the alloy interface. A value of ∼2 for the oxygen to aluminium ions surface concentration ratio indicates the formation of an oxy-hydroxide (AlOxOHy with x + y ∼ 2) hydroxylation product. STM and LEED show the amorphisation and roughening of the oxide film. At P(H2O) = 1 × 10−7 mbar, only the surface of the oxide film is modified, with formation of nodules of ∼2 nm lateral size covering homogeneously the surface. STS shows that essentially the valence band is modified with an increase of the density of states at the band edge. With increasing pressure, hydroxylation is amplified, leading to an increased coverage of the alloy by oxy-hydroxide products and to the formation of larger nodules (∼7 nm) of amorphous oxy-hydroxide. Roughening and loss of the nanostructure indicate a propagation of the reaction that modifies the bulk structure of the oxide film. Amorphisation can be reverted to crystallization by annealing under UHV at 1025 K when the surface of the oxide film has been modified, but not when the bulk structure has been modified.  相似文献

PH3 adsorption on Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 was studied after various exposures between 0.3 and 60 L at room temperature by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). PH3-, PH2-, H-reacted, and unreacted adatoms can be identified by analyzing empty-state STM images at different sample biases. PHx-reacted rest-atoms can be observed in empty-state STM images if neighboring adatoms are hydrogen terminated. Most of the PH3 adsorbs dissociatively on the surface, generating H- and PH2-adsorbed rest-atom and adatom sites. Dangling-bonds at rest-atom sites are more reactive than adatom sites and the faulted half of the 7 × 7 unit cell is more reactive than the unfaulted half. Center adatoms are overwhelmingly preferred over corner adatoms for PH2 adsorption. The saturation P coverage is ∼0.18 ML. Annealing of PH3-reacted 7 × 7 surfaces at 900 K generates disordered, partially P-covered surfaces, but dosing PH3 at 900 K forms P/Si(1 1 1)- surfaces. Si deposition at 510 K leaves disordered clusters on the surface, which cannot be reordered by annealing up to 800 K. However, annealing above 900 K recreates P/Si(1 1 1)- surfaces. Surface morphologies formed by sequential rapid thermal annealing are also presented.  相似文献

This study investigates ultra-thin potassium chloride (KCl) films on the Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 surfaces at near room temperature. The atomic structure and growth mode of this ionic solid film on the covalent bonded semiconductor surface is examined by synchrotron radiation core level photoemission, scanning tunneling microscopy and ab initio calculations. The Si 2p, K 3p and Cl 2p core level spectra together indicate that adsorbed KCl molecules at submonolayer coverage partially dissociate and that KCl overlayers above one monolayer (ML) have similar features in the valance band density of states as those of the bulk KCl crystal. STM results reveal a novel c(4 × 4) structure at 1 ML coverage. Ab initio calculations show that a model that comprises a periodic pyramidal geometry is consistent with experimental results.  相似文献

This article reports structure and morphology of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and fluorinated copper phthalocyanine (F16CuPc) pn heterojunction. Highly ordered CuPc and F16CuPc polycrystalline thin films with the 2 0 0 plane spacing s of 1.30 and 1.56 nm, respectively, could be continuously grown via an intermediate-phase layer. Compared with CuPc, the intermediate-phase layer is much thinner when F16CuPc is used as the first layer. The rougher the first layer is, the thicker the intermediate-phase layer is. Similarly, the 2 0 0 plane spacings of the intermediate-phase layer are dependent on morphology of the first layer. Furthermore, morphology of the heterostructure is mainly dominated by that of CuPc films. Due to the thicker intermediate-phase layer in the CuPc/F16CuPc heterostructure, the thin film transistors (TFT) performance is obviously inferior to that of the F16CuPc/CuPc device.  相似文献

The adsorption and surface reactions of propyl iodide on clean and potassium-modified Mo2C/Mo(1 0 0) surfaces have been investigated by thermal desorption spectroscopy (TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) in the 100-1200 K temperature range. This work is strongly related to the better understanding of the catalytic effect of Mo2C in the conversion of hydrocarbons. Potassium was found to be an effective promoter: it induced the rupture of C-I bond in the adsorbed C3H7I even at 100 K. The extent of C-I bond scission varied approximately linearly with the concentration of K coverage at the adsorption temperature of 100 K. As revealed by HREELS and TPD measurements the primary products of the dissociation are C3H7 and I. The former one was stabilized by potassium and underwent dehydrogenation and hydrogenation to give propene and propane. The desorption of both compounds is reaction-limited process. A fraction of propyl groups was converted into di-σ-bonded propene, which was stable up to ∼380 K. The coupling reaction of propyl species was also facilitated by potassium and resulted in the formation of hexane and hexene with Tp ∼ 230-250 K. Hydrogen was released with Tp = 390 K, indicative of a desorption limited process. The effect of potassium was explained by the extended electron donation to adsorbed propyl iodide in one hand, and by the direct interaction between potassium and I on the other hand. This was reflected by the shift of the desorption of potassium from the coadsorbed layer at and above 1.0 ML to higher temperature, and by the coincidal Tp values (∼700 K) of potassium and iodine. The formation of KI was also supported by the appearance of a loss feature at 650 cm−1 in the HREEL spectra attributed to a phonon mode of KI.  相似文献

We have performed scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) experiments on (1 1 1)-oriented epitaxial films of heavily boron-doped diamond (Tc∼5.4 K). We present that tunneling conductance spectra show temperature-dependent spatial variations. In the low-temperature region (T=0.47 K), the tunneling spectra do not show strong spatial dependence and a superconducting energy gap is observed independent of the surface morphology. In the high-temperature region (T=4.2 K), on the other hand, the tunneling conductance spectra show significant spatial dependence, indicating the inhomogeneous distribution of the superconducting property due to the distribution of boron atoms.  相似文献
