Communication Activism as a School of Politics: Lessons From Spain's Indignados Movement

In this article, we draw on ethnographic research to examine some key communication activism practices of Spain's indignados (15M) movement. The 15M radically transformed communication activism in Spain through its strong political-pedagogical orientation. Here lies the greatest 15M lesson for Communication for Social Change: Ordinary citizens in countries like Spain are rejecting traditional roles as “beneficiaries” of institutional communication campaigns. Instead, they have become active political actors who are able to generate their own processes of political pedagogy and communication. We conceptualize this lesson by positing the existence of three principles of 15M communication activism as a school of politics: the principles of pedagogical sovereignty, action, and networking.

Staying Ahead of the Digital Tsunami: The Contributions of an Organizational Communication Approach to Journalism in the Information Age

This essay addresses the challenges facing journalism in the information age by advocating for the study of journalism from an organizational communication perspective. The communication field has maintained an illogical divide between journalism and organizational communication scholarship. First, I present an overview of subdisciplinary identities. Second, I argue for an organizational communication approach to the study of journalism and refer to an empirical study as an exemplar of this approach. Finally, I present ideas for future research regarding the study of journalism and these subdisciplines. This approach is applicable to settings like newspapers, television news, and other media organizations. Analyzing journalism from an organizational communication perspective can connect academic subdisciplines and aid practitioners in understanding a rapidly evolving media landscape.

Digital communications and psychological well-being across the life span: Examining the intervening roles of social capital and civic engagement

This study examined the relationship between multimodal connectedness (i.e. communicating with others through multiple digital channels) and subjective well-being. Analyses from a serial mediation model showed no direct relationship, but there were several significant mediating pathways through individual social capital, civic engagement and positive affect. Further analyses of three age cohorts (18–34, 35–54, 55–70+) demonstrated two significant indirect pathways for the 18–34 cohort, one for the 35–54 cohort, and five for the 55–70+ cohort. Even though the oldest cohort used fewer communication technologies and had smaller social networks, they are more likely to benefit from multimodal communications because they are motivated to engage in behaviors that result in positive emotions and feelings, which in turn engenders overall well-being. The study points to the utility of a lifespan perspective in understanding the effects of communication technologies in society.

An LCSD & La Raza Microhistory: The Latina/o Communication Studies Division & La Raza Caucus of the National Communication Association

For many members of the National Communication Association (NCA), the La Raza Caucus and the Latina/o Communication Studies Division perhaps always have existed. These units have been options for reviewing and submitting papers, exploring leadership opportunities and finding community within a large professional academic organization (NCA). It is more accurate, however, to say that the La Raza Caucus (hereafter, “LRC” or “the Caucus”) and the Latina/o Communication Studies Division (hereafter, “LCSD” or “the Division”) are recent developments. By the NCA Centennial, the LRC has not yet reached its 25th anniversary, and the LSCD will be in its 17th year.¹[1] The Division was approved by the National Communication Association in 1997. It might be tempting to argue that the creation of both units reflects the changing demographics in the U.S. that show tremendous increases in the Latina/o population. It also might be tempting to argue that the appearance of these units is evidence of an oversized NCA. (We often interpret complaints that “NCA is just too big” as a coded way of saying there are too many people of color in the organization.) Understanding the appearance of these units requires a more complex reading. In our Microhistory of the La Raza Caucus and the Latina/o Communication Studies Division, we place the origins and growth within two contexts: (1) publication trends in communication journals and (2) the professional development needs of members. The story of these units is a story of creating a self-determined space within a large and significant academic organization where ethnic identities gain expression, where geographic orientations are more north–south than east–west, and where there is a high degree of collective self-consciousness regarding what our scholarly activity means. In this essay, we describe the formation of the LRC and the LCSD, assess the professional needs that are met for members, and chart the direction for future studies and involvement in communication.

通信工程勘察设计作业是通信工程建设的重要内容之一,在整个工程勘察设计作业过程中,存在着各种安全风险。从不同维度,结合示例,对影响勘察设计作业安全的因素、类型及内容进行了详细分析;根据长期的工作实践,总结出了不同场景下各种安全风险的内容及特征表象,以期更好地提高网络安全及从业人员的人身安全,预防和减少通信工程建设中的各类安全事故,使通信工程建设安全、有序、高效地运行。

The Appearance of Accountability: Communication Technologies and Power Asymmetries in Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Recovery

New communication technologies are celebrated for their potential to improve the accountability of humanitarian agencies. The response to Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 represents the most systematic implementation of “accountability to affected people” initiatives. Drawing on a year‐long ethnography of the Haiyan recovery and 139 interviews with humanitarian workers and affected people, the article reveals a narrow interpretation of accountability as feedback that is increasingly captured through mobile phones. We observe that the digitized collection of feedback is not fed back to disaster‐affected communities, but is directed to donors as evidence of “impact.” Rather than improving accountability to affected people, digitized feedback mechanisms sustained humanitarianism's power asymmetries.
