A mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) containing triphenylene (Tp) moieties in the side chains with 12 methylene units as spacers (denoted as PP12V) was synthesized. Its liquid crystalline (LC) phase behavior was studied with a combination of solution 1H NMR, solid‐state NMR, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and one‐ and two‐dimensional wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. By simply varying the temperature, two ordered nanostructures at sub‐10‐nm length scales originating from two LC building blocks were obtained in one polymer. The low‐temperature phase of the polymer is a hexagonal columnar phase (ΦH, a = 2.06 nm) self‐organized by Tp discotic mesogens. The high‐temperature phase is a nematic columnar phase with a larger dimension (a′ = 4.07 nm) developed by the rod‐like supramolecular mesogen—the MJLCP chain as a whole. A re‐entrant isotropic phase is found in the medium temperature range. Partially homeotropic alignment of the polymer can be achieved when treated with an electric field, with the polymer in the ΦH phase developed by the Tp moieties. The incorporation of Tp moieties through relatively long spacers (12 methylene units) disrupts the ordered packing of the MJLCP at low temperatures, which is the first case for main‐chain/side‐chain combined LC polymers with MJLCPs as the main‐chain LC building block to the best of our knowledge. The relationship of the molecular structure and the novel phase behavior of PP12V has implications in the design of LC polymers containing nanobuilding blocks toward constructing ordered nanostructures at different length scales. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diblock copolymers consisting of a multibranched polymethacrylate segment with densely grafted poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] pendants and a poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) segment were synthesized by a combination of living cationic polymerization and RAFT polymerization. A macromonomer having both a poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] backbone and a terminal methacryloyl group was synthesized by living cationic polymerization. The sequential RAFT copolymerizations of the macromonomer and N‐isopropylacrylamide in this order were performed in aqueous media employing 4‐cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate as a chain transfer agent and 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid) as an initiator. The obtained diblock copolymers possessed relatively narrow molecular weight distributions and controlled molecular weights. The thermoresponsive properties of these polymers were investigated. Upon heating, the aqueous solutions of the diblock copolymers exhibited two‐stage thermoresponsive properties denoted by the appearance of two cloud points, indicating that the densely grafted poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] pendants and the poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) segments independently responded to temperature. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The photoinduced solid–liquid phase transition of azobenzene-based polymers is an attractive method to synthesize stimuli-responsive functional materials. As the structure–property relationships of such materials are not fully understood, a new class of polymer backbone, that is, poly(vinyl ether) (PVE), was studied for the development of azobenzene-based polymers with high thermal stability. For this purpose, a series of azobenzene-based PVEs with different monomer structures were synthesized using a Lewis acid catalyst-based cationic polymerization method. Typical PVEs are viscous polymers with low glass-transition temperatures (Tg's). The flexibility of the polymer backbone improves with the use of alkylene spacers, changing the order of alignment of the mesogenic azobenzene moieties attached to the backbone, leading to high Tg's of the azobenzene-based PVEs. One of the synthesized PVEs shows a high glass-transition temperature of 94 °C, which is 14 °C higher compared to that of the corresponding polymethacrylate. Furthermore, the PVE exhibits photoinduced solid–liquid phase transition from the semicrystalline state. This phase transition material, with its high thermal stability, has the potential for broader applications, such as for the phototuning of adhesion. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers (SCLCPs) as nucleating agents for high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) were investigated. For this purpose, the molecular architectures of four different vinyl monomers with liquid‐crystalline properties were designed and prepared with 1‐butanol, 1‐pentanol, 4‐hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroquinone, and acryloyl chloride as the starting materials through alkylation and acylation reactions. The corresponding polymers were synthesized by homopolymerization in 1,4‐dioxane with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator at 60 °C. Both the monomers and the synthesized polymers were characterized with elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H NMR measurements. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and hot stage polarized optical microscopy were employed to study the phase‐transition temperature, mesophase texture, and thermal stability of the liquid‐crystalline polymers. The results showed that all the polymers had thermotropic liquid‐crystalline features. Being used as nucleating agents, SCLCPs effectively increased both the crystallization temperature and rate and, at the same time, raised the crystallinity for HDPE. In comparison with common small‐molecule nucleating agents, such as 1,3:2,4‐dibenzylidenesorbitol, SCLCPs are more efficient and are indeed excellent nucleating agents for HDPE. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Charge transport in conjugated polymers may be governed not only by the static microstructure but also fluctuations of backbone segments. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we predict the role of side chains in the backbone dynamics for regiorandom poly(3‐alkylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl)s (P3ATs). We show that the backbone of poly(3‐dodecylthiophene‐2‐5‐diyl) (P3DDT) moves faster than that of poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl) (P3HT) as a result of the faster motion of the longer side chains. To verify our predictions, we investigated the structures and dynamics of regiorandom P3ATs with neutron scattering and solid state NMR. Measurements of spin‐lattice relaxations (T1) using NMR support our prediction of faster motion for side chain atoms that are farther away from the backbone. Using small‐angle neutron scattering (SANS), we confirmed that regiorandom P3ATs are amorphous at about 300 K, although microphase separation between the side chains and backbones is apparent. Furthermore, quasi‐elastic neutron scattering (QENS) reveals that thiophene backbone motion is enhanced as the side chain length increases from hexyl to dodecyl. The faster motion of longer side chains leads to faster backbone dynamics, which in turn may affect charge transport for conjugated polymers. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. T‐shaped coil–rod–coil oligomers, consisting of a dibenzo[a,c]phenazine unit and phenyl groups linked together with acetylenyl bonds at the 2,7‐position of dibenzo[a,c]phenazine as a rigid segment have been synthesized. The coil segments of these new molecules composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)–poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) incorporating lateral methyl groups between the rod and coil segment and two flexible alkyl groups connecting with the rigid segment at the 4,6‐position of dibenzo[a,c]phenazine, respectively. The experimental results reveal that the length of the flexible PEO coil chain influence construction of various supra‐nanostructures from lamellar structure to rectangular columnar structure. It is also shown that introduction of different length of alkyl side chain groups in the backbone of the T‐shaped molecules affect the self‐organization behavior to form hexagonal perforate layer or oblique columnar structures. In addition, lateral methyl groups attached to the surface of rod and coil segments, dramatically influence the self‐assembling behavior in the crystalline phase. T‐shaped molecules containing a lateral methyl group at the surface of rod and PEO coil segments, self‐assemble into 3D body‐centered tetragonal structures in the crystalline phase, while molecules without a lateral methyl group based on PEO coil chain self‐organize into 2D oblique columnar crystalline structures. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two kinds of amphiphilic dendronized conjugated polymers, polyfluorene (PF) and poly(binaphthyl‐alt‐fluorene) (PBF), were synthesized by Suzuki polycondensation of hydrophobic macromonomers with two nonpolar octyloxy chains and hydrophilic macromonomers with two polar oligo(ethylene oxide) chains. In these polymers, PF possesses a linear rod‐like backbone structure, and PBF adopts a folded rigid backbone structure. The different configurations in the conjugated main chains result in different supramolecular self‐assembly morphologies. The optical and thermal properties of PF and PBF were also studied. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 574–584, 2008  相似文献

Side-chain liquid crystalline (SCLC) silphenylene-siloxane polymers with a phenyl benzoate mesogenic group and polymethylene spacers were prepared and characterized, and their properties were compared with those of equivalent SCLC polymers, SCLCPs, with a biphenyl mesogenic group. With identical spacers and terminal substituents, the melting temperatures of the former were much lower, but the isotropization temperatures were lowered to a lesser extent, than those of the latter, and, consequently, a more thermally stable nematic phase was obtained for the former. Both types of SCLCPs formed nematic phases, while polymethylsiloxanes with the same side-chain mesogens exhibited smectic phases with wider temperature ranges. The lower thermal stability of the mesophases in the silphenylene-siloxane SCLCPs compared to those of the SCLC polymethylsiloxanes can be attributed to both the rigidity of the backbone and the greater separation of the side-chains along the main chains of the former.  相似文献

Redox‐active polymers enhanced the focus of attention in the field of battery research in recent years. Anthraquinone is one of the most generic redox‐active functional compounds for battery applications, because the quinonide structure undergoes a redox reaction involving two electrons and features stable electrochemical behavior. Although various redox‐active polymers have been developed, the polymer backbone is mostly based on linear alkyl chains [e.g., poly(methacrylate)s, poly(ether)s]. Polymers featuring ring structures in the backbone are limited due to the restricted availability of suitable polymerization techniques [e.g., poly(norbornene)s by ROMP]. The cyclopolymerization of dienes with pendant redox‐active anthraquinone moieties by Pd catalysis represents a novel approach to synthesize redox‐active polymers featuring cyclic structures in the backbone. Electrochemical investigations, in particular cyclic voltammetry, of these new diene monomer, polymers and the corresponding polymer supported carbon paper composites were conducted in different organic electrolytes. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various phase behavior of blends of poly(vinyl ether)s with homologous acrylic polymers (polymethacrylates or polyacrylates) were examined using differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy (OM), and Fourier‐transformed infrared spectroscopy. Effects of varying the pendant groups of either of constituent polymers on the phase behavior of the blends were analyzed. A series of interestingly different phase behavior in the blends has been revealed in that as the pendant group in the acrylic polymer series gets longer, polymethacrylate/poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) blends exhibit immiscibility, upper critical solution temperature (UCST), and miscibility, respectively. This study found that the true phase behavior of poly(propyl methacrylate)/PVME [and poly(isopropyl methacrylate)/PVME)] blend systems, though immiscible at ambient, actually displayed a rare UCST upon heating to higher temperatures. Similarly, as the methyl pendant group in PVE is lengthened to ethyl (i.e., PVME replaced by PVEE), phase behavior of its blends with series of polymethacrylates or polyacrylates changes correspondingly. Analyses and quantitative comparisons on four series of blends of PVE/acrylic polymer were performed to thoroughly understand the effects of pendant groups in either polyethers (PVE's) or acrylic polymers on the phase behavior of the blends of these two constituents. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have newly designed an original bifunctional monomer (PAVE) containing both a phenylacetylene (PA) group and a vinyl ether (VE) group, which is expected to be a key material for the synthesis of brush‐shaped polymers consisting of a poly(phenylacetylene) (polyPA) main chain and polyVE side chains. Actually, we have demonstrated the selective chemical transformation of the VE moiety of PAVE to an initiator site for the living cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE), and then succeeded in the controlled synthesis of a novel PA‐end‐capped polyIBVE macromonomer. Moreover, using this macromonomer, the first synthesis of a brush‐shaped polyPA bearing polyVE side chains was achieved via Rh complex‐mediated homopolymerization. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. This article describes the syntheses and electro‐optical applications of liquid crystalline (LC) conjugated polymers, for example, poly(p‐phenylenevinylene), polyfluorene, polythiophene, and other conjugated polymers. The polymerization involves several mechanisms: the Gilch route, Heck coupling, or Knoevenagel condensation for poly(p‐phenylenevinylene)s, the Suzuki‐ or Yamamoto‐coupling reaction for polyfluorenes, and miscellaneous coupling reactions for other conjugated polymers. These LC conjugated polymers are classified into two types: conjugated main chain polymers with long alkyl side chains, namely main‐chain type LC polymers, and conjugated polymers grafting with mesogenic side groups, namely side‐chain type LC conjugated polymers. In general, the former shows higher transition temperature and only nematic phase; the latter possesses lower transition temperature and more mesophases, for example, smectic and nematic phases, depending on the structure of mesogenic side chains. The fully conjugated main chain promises them as good candidates for polarized electroluminescent or field‐effect devices. The polarized emission can be obtained by surface rubbing or thermal annealing in liquid crystalline phase, with maximum dichroic ratio more than 20. In addition, conjugated oligomers with LC properties are also included and discussed in this article. Several oligo‐fluorene derivatives show outstanding polarized emission properties and potential use in LCD backlight application. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the synthesis of brush‐shaped conjugated polymers consisting of a poly(phenylene butadiynylene) backbone and well‐defined poly(vinyl ether) (polyVE) side chains, we designed polyVE‐based macromonomers bearing a diethynyl benzene group at the terminus and applied them to the grafting through synthesis. The macromonomer (DE‐PIBVE) was synthesized by living cationic polymerization of isobutyl VE (IBVE) using a functionalized initiator (TMS‐DEVE‐TFA) having a TMS protected diethynyl benzene moiety, followed by deprotection of the TMS groups. As a result, we succeeded in the synthesis of the target brush‐shaped conjugated polymers [poly(DE‐PIBVE)] by oxidative coupling reaction of the diethynyl benzene groups. We found that the solution of poly(DE‐PIBVE) with a specific side chain length exhibited solvatochromism and thermochromism depending on the polarity of the media employed. This phenomenon was attributed to self‐assembly in polar media due to the intermolecular ππ interaction between neighboring conjugated polymer backbones, where the self‐assembly behavior would be closely related to the pendant polyVE structure. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The conformational mode change of the stiff alkylated polymer, poly(3-dodecyl thiophene) (PDDT), with a flexible comb-like coil poly(octadecyl acrylate) (PODA), and the effect of intermolecular interaction between these two alkylated polymers with different chemical structure of the backbone were investigated using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD). In addition to the characteristics of thermochromism, a homogeneous one phase was observed above 175°C when the PODA content was 10 wt % or less. Increased conductivity in the PDDT/PODA blend due to the highly conjugated π-system of PDDT backbone was observed in the presence of nonelectroactive PODA. A red-shift of absorption maximum of PDDT/PODA blend observed in solid state at room temperature. From the FTIR spectra, the gauche-trans conformational structure change of methylene units was investigated in two alkylated polymer blends. The increase of combined heat of fusion of the alkyl side chain melting of PDDT and the endothermic peak of PODA, as well as the interlayer d-spacing of PDDT main chain were also observed with the addition of PODA in blends. A more ordered conformational structure of rigid rod backbone of PDDT was induced due to the attractive intermolecular interaction which can cause cocrystallization between the alkylated side chains of two polymers. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The melt structures of linear polyethylene and the isotactic vinyl polymers polypropylene, poly(1‐butene), and poly(4‐methyl‐1‐pentene), along with the corresponding methyl, ethyl, and isobutyl side chains, were studied with wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. As the size of the side branch increases from zero (polyethylene) to methyl, ethyl, and isobutyl, a prepeak appears below the main diffraction peak in the total structure factor. The prepeaks become stronger and shift to lower scattering vectors with increasing bulkiness of the side chain. There is a strong correlation between the position of the prepeaks in the melt and the average nearest‐neighbor helix–helix packing distance in the crystals, implying similar helical conformations in the melts. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.* J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 2480–2485, 2000  相似文献

In this work, we apply a methodology recently developed by us to perform atomistic simulations of the amorphous phase of poly(α‐octadecyl β‐aspartate) and poly‐ (octadecyl acrylate). The simulation method, which is denoted SuSi/CB, combines the strength of an algorithm specially designed to generate atomistic models of dense amorphous polymers and the Configurational Bias Monte Carlo procedure. Modeling results reveal that poly(octadecyl acrylate) presents a tendency to adopt backbone helical conformations, while no trace of helicity was detected in the amorphous phase poly(α‐octadecyl β‐aspartate). Regarding the side chain organization, the paraffinic pool formed by the octadecyl side chains is slightly greater for the poly(acrylate) than for the poly(β‐aspartate). According to these features, it can be concluded that the small chemical differences between the two investigated polymers are enough to provide some distinctive structural features. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of comb polymers consisting of a methacrylate backbone and poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PEtOx) side chains was synthesized by a combination of cationic ring‐opening polymerization and reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. Small‐angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies revealed a transition from an ellipsoidal to a cylindrical conformation in D2O around a backbone degree of polymerization of 30. Comb‐shaped PEtOx has lowered Tg values but a similar elution behavior in liquid chromatography under critical conditions in comparison to its linear analog was observed. The lower critical solution temperature behavior of the polymers was investigated by turbidimetry, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and SANS revealing decreasing Tcp in aqueous solution with increasing molar mass, the presence of very few aggregated structures below Tcp, a contraction of the macromolecules at temperatures 5 °C above Tcp but no severe conformational change of the cylindrical structure. In addition, the phase diagram including cloud point and coexistence curve was developed showing an LCST of 75 °C of the binary mixture poly[oligo(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline)methacrylate]/water. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers containing hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) backbone and hydrophobic poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) side chains were synthesized via sequential reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization followed by selective hydrolysis of poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) backbone. A new Br‐containing acrylate monomer, tert‐butyl 2‐((2‐bromopropanoyloxy)methyl) acrylate, was first prepared, which can be polymerized via RAFT in a controlled way to obtain a well‐defined homopolymer with narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.08). This homopolymer was transformed into xanthate‐functionalized macromolecular chain transfer agent by reacting with o‐ethyl xanthic acid potassium salt. Grafting‐from strategy was employed to synthesize PtBA‐g‐PVAc well‐defined graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.40) via RAFT of vinyl acetate using macromolecular chain transfer agent. The final PAA‐g‐PVAc amphiphilic graft copolymers were obtained by selective acidic hydrolysis of PtBA backbone in acidic environment without affecting the side chains. The critical micelle concentrations in aqueous media were determined by fluorescence probe technique. The micelle morphologies were found to be spheres. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) and tert‐butyl vinyl ether (TBVE) was carried out with metallocene and nonmetallocene catalysts, and the stereoregularity of the formed polymers was examined with 13C NMR spectroscopy. IBVE afforded polymers with 63–68% dyad isotacticity by polymerization with mixtures of metallocene catalysts and methyl aluminoxane as a cocatalyst in toluene as a solvent. However, TBVE yielded polymers with 47–52% dyad isotacticity (21–28% triad isotacticity) under the same conditions, the isotacticity being lower than that of poly(isobutyl vinyl ether) (PIBVE). Nonmetallocene catalysts, including Ti, Zr, and Hf complexes with two phenoxy imine chelate ligands, provided PIBVE and poly(tert‐butyl vinyl ether) with 63–68 and 45–51% dyad isotacticity, respectively. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Long-alkyl tail triphenylene (TP) side-chain liquid crystalline polymers (SCLCPs) with different spacer length (P-m-TP,m =2,3,4,6,8,which is the number of carbon atom in the flexible alkyl spacers) have been successfully synthesized via free radical polymerization. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC),polarized light microscopy (POM),ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis),wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements were performed to investigate the influence of multiple effects on the self-organization behaviors of P-m-TP,including steric effect, decoupling effect and π-π stacking effect. The experimental results revealed that P-m-TP (m =2,3,4) formed the columnar phase which was developed by the TP moieties and the main chain as a whole, suggesting that the side-chains had strong steric effect even though the number of spacer length (m)exceeded 4.In addition, the clearing points (Tis) of the polymers were above 300 ℃.When m =6 and 8,the polymers displayed hexagonal columnar phase and exhibited the low Tis (91 and 80 ℃ respectively),originating from the self-assembly of triphenylene due to the decoupling effect and π-π stacking effect. This work offers a viable and inspiring pathway to control the phase transition temperature and phase structure of TP SCLCPs via simply tailoring the spacer length and increasing the alkyl tail length of TP.  相似文献
