The problem of natural convection in an inclined rectangular porous layer enclosure is studied numerically. The enclosure is heated from one side and cooled from the other by a constant heat flux while the two other walls are insulated. The effect of aspect ratio, inclination angle and Rayleigh number on heat transfer is studied. It is found that the enclosure orientation has a considerable effect on the heat transfer. The negative orientation sharply inhibits the convection and consequently the heat transfer and a positive orientation maximizes the energy transfer. The maximum temperature within the porous medium can be considerably higher than that induced by pure conduction when the cavity is negatively oriented. The peak of the average Nusselt number depends on the Rayleigh number and the aspect ratio. The heat transfer between the two thermally active boundaries is sensitive to the effect of aspect ratio. For an enclosure at high or low aspect ratio, the convection is considerably decreased and the heat transfer depends mainly on conduction.

Summary An analytic solution is given to a problem of natural convection in a rectangular cavity, by means of a Papkovich-Fadle series. The convergence of the method is numerically proven and the results are compared with those obtained by several other methods. The considered solution procedure shows definite advantages with respect to the other techniques.

The unsteady natural convective flow of an incompressible viscous fluid near a vertical plate has been considered. It is assumed that the bounding plate has a ramped temperature profile. The exact solutions of the energy and momentum equations, under the usual Boussinesq approximation, have been obtained in closed form. There are two different solutions for the fluid velocity—one valid for the fluids of Prandtl numbers different from unity, and the other for which the Prandtl number is unity. The variations of the fluid temperature, velocity as well as the Nusselt number and wall skin friction have been presented graphically. The natural convection near a ramped temperature plate has also been compared with the flow near a plate with constant temperature.

Natural convection in vertical slots has been studied experimentally with oscillation of a cold wall temperature. It is found that at sufficiently large Rayleigh numbers travelling-wave instability occurs, but only in the region close to the cold wall when the hot wall is maintained at the initial temperature, and appears in both cold and hot regions when both hot and cold wall temperatures are changed simultaneously and symmetrically with the initial temperature value, although the hot wall temperature is kept constant after the change. The observed instability may be attributed to the leading-edge effect induced by the cold wall temperature oscillation, and selectively amplified by the natural convection flow. The author would like to thank Professor R. Vibrational thermal convection in a rectangular cavity under conditions of weightlessness is studied. Some equilibrium configurations were obtained in earlier papers of two of the authors [1, 2] and their linear stability investigated. In the present paper, a numerical investigation is made of the developed vibrational convection which arises under conditions when equilibrium is impossible. The structure of the average vibrational-convective flows and the characteristics of the heat transfer are determined. The change of regimes and the connection with the stability problem are discussed.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 94–99, July–August, 1982.

The heat transfer by natural convection in vertical and inclined rectangular enclosures with fins attached to the heated wall is numerically studied using the energy and Navier-Stokes equations with the Boussinesq approximation. The range of study covers 104Ra2×105,A=H/L=2.5 to ,B=l/L=0 to 1,C=h/L=0.25 to 2 andPr=0.72. The inclination angle from the vertical was from 0 to 60 degree. The variation of the local Nusselt numberNu loc along the enclosure height and the average Nusselt numberNu as a function ofRa are computed. Streamlines and isotherms in the enclosure are produced. The results show thatB is an important parameter affecting the heat transfer through the cold wall of the enclosure. The heat transfer is reduced for decreasingC and it passes from a maximum for an inclination angle. The results show that the heat transfer can generally be reduced using appropriate geometrical parameters in comparison with a similar enclosure without fins.

This paper describes a numerical method for the study of combined natural convection and radiation in a rectangular, two-dimensional cavity containing a non-participating (i.e. transparent) fluid. One wall of the cavity is isothermal, being heated either by solar radiation or independently. The opposite wall is partially transparent, permitting radiation exchanges between the cavity and its surroundings and/or the Sun; that wall also exchanges heat by convection from its external surface to the surroundings. The other two walls are adiabatic: convection and radiation there are balanced, so that there is no heat transfer through those walls. The equations of motion and energy are solved by finite difference methods. Coupled to these equations are the radiative flux boundary conditions which are used to determine the temperature distribution along the non-isothermal walls. A two-band radiation model has been employed. Results are presented for a square cavity with a vertical hot wall at 150 °C, the ambient at 20 °C and 104 ? Ra ? 3 × 105, in the absence of direct insolation. The effects on the flow and heat transfer in the cavity of radiation and external convection have been examined. More extensive results will be presented in subsequent papers.

Finite element predictions of two-dimensional laminar natural convection in a partially divided rectangular cavity at high Rayleigh number are presented. The walls are differentially heated, the horizontal surfaces are insulated and the cavity contains a partial vertical divider which is centrally located and whose height is varied. Detailed results are presented for an aluminium half-divider in water for Rayleigh number up to 1011 and compared directly with recent experiments in a cavity of aspect ratio 1/2. The predicted flow and heat transfer are in good agreement with the measurements and confirm the existence of a high Rayleigh number regime with characteristic behaviour that differs significantly from that found at lower Rayleigh number. In addition, the effects of the divider height, the divider conductivity, the fluid Prandtl number and the cavity aspect ratio are studied. The results show that a direct simulation of the complex flow and heat transfer that occurs in partially divided cavities is possible for realistic physical conditions.

Numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the unsteady natural convection flow in a cavity subjected to a sidewall heat flux varying sinusoidally with time. With all walls non-slip and the upper and lower boundaries and the other sidewall adiabatic, the heating and cooling produces an alternating direction natural convection boundary layer that discharges hot fluid to the top and cold fluid to the bottom of the cavity, generating a time-varying thermal stratification in the cavity interior. Scaling analysis has been conducted for different flow regimes based on the forcing frequency, with the characteristic time scales being the forcing period and the boundary layer development time. The scaling relations are then verified using the simulations, with the results showing overall good agreement with the derived scaling relations.

Numerical simulations have been undertaken for the benchmark problem of natural convection flow in a square cavity. The control volume method is used to solve the conservation equations for laminar and turbulent flows for a series of Rayleigh numbers (Ra) reaching values up to 1010. The k-? model has been used for turbulence modelling with and without logarithmic wall functions. Uniform and non-uniform (stretched) grids have been employed with increasing density to guarantee accurate solutions, especially near the walls for high Ra-values. ADI and SIP solvers are implemented to accelerate convergence. Excellent agreement is obtained with previous numerical solutions, while some discrepancies with others for high Ra-values may be due to a possibly different implementation of the wall functions. Comparisons with experimental data for heat transfer (Nusselt number) clearly demonstrates the limitations of the standard k-? model with logarithmic wall functions, which gives significant overpredictions.

We consider the flow, which is induced by differential heating on the boundaries of a porous cavity heated from below. In particular we allow the sidewalls to have the same cold temperature as the upper surface, and thus the problem is a variant of the Darcy-Bénard convection problem, but one where there is flow at all non-zero Grashof numbers. Attention is focused on how the flow and heat transfer is affected by variations in the cavity aspect ratio, the Grashof number and the Darcy number. The flow becomes weaker as the Darcy number decreases from the pure fluid limit towards the Darcy-flow limit. In addition the number of cells which form in the cavity varies primarily with the aspect ratio and is always even due to the symmetry imposed by the cold sidewalls.

The natural convection heat transfer in inclined rectangular enclosures with perfectly conducting fins attached to the heated wall is numerically studied. The parameters governing this problem are the Rayleigh number (102Ra≤2×105), the aspect ratio of the enclosures (2.5≤A=H′/L′≤∞), the dimensionless lengths of the partitions (0≤B=?′/L′≤1), the aspect ratio of micro-cavities (AC=h′/L′≤0.33), the inclination angle (0≤φ≤60°) and the Prandtl number (Pr=0.72). The results indicate that the heat transfer through the cover is considerably affected by the presence of the fins. At low Rayleigh numbers, the heat transfer regime is dominated by conduction. When B≈0.75 and C≈0.33, the heat transfer through the cold wall decreases considerably. This trend is enhanced when the enclosure is inclined. Useful engineering correlations are derived for practical applications.

The transient natural convection of a fluid with Prandtl number of order 200 in a two-dimensional square cavity has been numerically studied. One of the vertical walls of the cavity is kept at a constant (ambient) temperature and a constant heat flux is applied on the opposite wall. The other walls are adiabatic. Initially, a boundary layer is formed near the heated wall; subsequently, a large vortical structure is generated, together with an upper intrusion layer. As time progresses, the average temperature in the cavity increases, and a descending boundary layer is formed near the constant temperature wall. During the transition to the steady-state regime, a thermal stratification pattern is formed. The results are compared with the scale analysis presented by Patterson and Imberger (1980).

This paper reports on the results of a numerical study on the equilibrium state of the convection of water in the presence of ice in an inclined rectangular cavity filled with a porous medium. One side of the cavity is maintained at a temperature higher than the fusion temperature while the opposite side is cooled to a temperature lower than the fusion temperature. The two remaining sides are insulated. Results are analysed in terms of the density inversion parameter, the tilt angle, and the cooling temperature. It appears that the phenomenon of density inversion plays an important role in the equilibrium of an ice-water system when the heating temperature is below 20°. In a vertical cavity, the density inversion causes the formation of two counterrotating vortices leading to a water volume which is wider at the bottom than at the top. When the cavity is inclined, there exist two branches of solutions which exhibit the bottom heating and the side heating characteristics, respectively (the Bénard and side heating branches). Due to the inversion of density, the solution on the Bénard branch may fail to converge to a steady state at small tilt angles and exhibits an oscillating behavior. On the side heating branch, a maximum heat transfer rate is obtained at a tilt angle of about 70° but the water volume was found to depend very weakly on the inclination of the cavity. Under the effect of subcooling, the interplay between conduction in the solid phase and convection in the liquid leads to an equilibrium ice-water interface which is most distorted at some intermediate cooling temperature.

In the present study, fully developed laminar flow and heat transfer in a helically coiled tube with uniform wall temperature have been investigated analytically. Expressions involving relevant variables for entropy generation rate contributed to heat transfer and friction loss, and total entropy generation rate have been derived. The effect of various flow and coil parameters like Reynolds number, curvature ratio, coil pitch, etc. on the entropy generation rate has been studied for two fluids- air and water. The results of the present study have been compared to the corresponding entropy generation values of straight pipe. Investigating the results, some optimum values for Reynolds number have been proposed and compared with the optimum Reynolds numbers of laminar flow inside a coiled tube subjected to constant heat flux boundary condition.

This paper describes a numerical and theoretical study of the transient natural convection heating of a two-dimensional rectangular enclosure filled with fluid. The heating is applied suddenly along one of the side walls, while the remaining three walls are maintained insulated. It is shown that the process has two distinct phases, an early period dominated by conduction and a late period dominated by convection. The scaling laws for the heat transfer rate and the effectiveness (energy storage fraction) are determined based on scale analysis. These theoretical results are confirmed by numerical experiments conducted in the domain Ra = 103−106, Pr = 7, A = 1, where Ra is the Rayleigh number based on height and initial temperature difference, Pr is the Prandtl number, and A is the height/length ratio of the enclosure. Correlations for heat transfer rate and effectiveness are constructed by comparing the theoretical scaling laws with the numerical results.

Analytical and numerical study is conducted for two-dimensional steady-state buoyancy driven flow of a non-Newtonian power law fluid confined in a shallow rectangular horizontal cavity uniformly heated from below, while its short vertical rigid sides are considered adiabatic. The effect of the non-Newtonian behaviour on the onset of convection, fluid flow, temperature field, and heat transfer is examined. A closed approximate analytical solution is developed on the basis of the parallel flow assumption and the obtained results are validated numerically by solving the full governing equations.

This paper presents a numerical method that simulates the melting process in the presence of solid-liquid density change and natural convection in the melt. The physical model concerned is two-dimensional melting of a phase-change material, initially at its fusion temperature, charged in a rectangular cavity with isothermally heated side walls and an adiabatic bottom wall. The presence of the density change brings no change into the basic form of governing equation, so it is considered through the reformulation of boundary conditions. Difficulties associated with the complex time-dependent melt region, whose shape is also a part of the solutions, are overcome by employing the boundary-fitted coordinate system. Comparison with other works validates the present numerical model and reveals the effects of density change qualitatively. Also, it is confirmed that the present method is preferable to others with natural convection only. Computed results for interesting cases are shown in forms of transient position of the interface, temperature distribution, flow pattern, heat transfer coefficient, and melting fraction as a function of time. Closer examination on melting patterns allows a correlation to be made between the melting fraction and a new independent variable Ste·Fo·Ra1/4.
