The competition between ion-molecule and molecule-molecule interactions was investigated in M+(phenol)2 cluster ions for M=Li, Na, K, and Cs. Infrared predissociation spectroscopy in the O-H stretch region was used to characterize the structure of the cluster ions. By adjusting the experimental conditions, it was possible to generate species where argon was additionally bound in order to investigate cold cluster ions. The spectra showed the presence of hydrogen bonding in the colder M+(phenol)2Ar cluster ions but the absence of hydrogen bonding in the warmer M+(phenol)2 species. For the cold species, the IR spectra were compared with minimum-energy ab initio calculations to elucidate the hydrogen-bonded structures. In the dominant hydrogen-bonded configurations observed experimentally, the phenol molecules form hydrogen-bonded dimers and the alkali-metal ions bind to the phenol via a cation-pi interaction with the aromatic ring. Increasing the strength of the cation-pi interaction by decreasing the ion size forces the distance between the phenol O-H groups to increase, thus weakening the intermolecular hydrogen bond. Free-energy differences of different configurations relative to the ground state demonstrate that hydrogen-bonded structures are enthalpically favored, while non-hydrogen-bonded structures are entropically favored and are thus observed in the warm cluster ions.  相似文献

Hydrated alkali metal ion-phenol complexes were studied to model these species in aqueous solution for M=Na and K. IR predissociation spectroscopy in the O-H stretch region was used to analyze the structures of M+(Phenol)(H2O)n cluster ions, for n = 1-4. The onset of hydrogen bonding was observed to occur at n=4. Ab initio calculations were used to qualitatively explore the types of hydrogen-bonded structures of the M+(Phenol)(H2O)4 isomers. By combining the ab initio calculations and IR spectra, several different structures were identified for each metal ion. In contrast to benzene, detailed in a previous study of Na+(Benzene)n(H2O)m [J. Chem. Phys. 110, 8429 (1999)], phenol is able to bind directly to Na+ even in the presence of four waters. This is likely the result of the sigma-type interaction between the phenol oxygen and the ion. With K+, the dominant isomers are those in which the phenol O-H group is involved in a hydrogen bond with the water molecules, while with Na+, the dominant isomers are those in which the phenol O-H group is free and the water molecules are hydrogen-bonded to each other. Spectra and ab initio calculations for the M+(Phenol)Ar cluster ions for M=Na and K are reported to characterize the free phenol O-H stretch in the M+(Phenol) complex. While pi-type configurations were observed for binary M+(Phenol) complexes, sigma-type configurations appear to dominate the hydrated cluster ions.  相似文献

The gas-phase structures of alkali-metal cation complexes of serine (Ser) are examined using infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy utilizing light generated by a free electron laser, in conjunction with ab initio calculations. Spectra of Li+(Ser) and Na+(Ser) are similar and relatively simple, whereas Cs+(Ser) includes distinctive new IR bands, and K+(Ser) and Rb+(Ser) exhibit intermediate behavior. Measured IRMPD spectra are compared to spectra calculated at a B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level to identify the structures present in the experimental studies. On the basis of these experiments and calculations, the only conformations accessed for the complexes to the smaller alkali-metal cations, Li+ and Na+, are charge-solvated structures involving tridentate coordination to the amine and carbonyl groups of the amino acid backbone and to the hydroxyl group of the side chain, M1[N,CO,OH]. For the cesiated complex, a band corresponding to a zwitterionic structure, ZW[CO2-], is clearly visible. K+(Ser) and Rb+(Ser) exhibit evidence of the charge-solvated analogue of the zwitterions, M3[COOH], in which the metal cation binds to the carboxylic acid group. Calculations indicate that the relative stability of the M3[COOH] structure is very strongly dependent on the size of the metal cation, consistent with the range of conformations observed experimentally.

Interactions between metal ions and amino acids are common both in solution and in the gas phase. Here, the effect of metal ions and water on the structure of glycine is examined. The effect of metal ions (Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) and water on structures of Gly.Mn+(H2O)m and GlyZwitt.Mn+(H2O)m (m = 0, 2, 5) complexes have been determined theoretically by employing the hybrid B3LYP exchange-correlation functional and using extended basis sets. Selected calculations were carried out also by means of CBS-QB3 model chemistry. The interaction enthalpies, entropies, and Gibbs energies of eight complexes Gly.Mn+ (Mn+ = Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) were determined at the B3LYP density functional level of theory. The computed Gibbs energies DeltaG degrees are negative and span a rather broad energy interval (from -90 to -1100 kJ mol(-1)), meaning that the ions studied form strong complexes. The largest interaction Gibbs energy (-1076 kJ mol(-1)) was computed for the NiGly2+ complex. Calculations of the molecular structure and relative stability of the Gly.Mn+(H2O)m and GlyZwitt.Mn+(H2O)m (Mn+ = Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+; m = 0, 2, and 5) systems indicate that in the complexes with monovalent metal cations the most stable species are the NO coordinated metal cations in non-zwitterionic glycine. Divalent cations Mg2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ prefer coordination via the OO bifurcated bonds of the zwitterionic glycine. Stepwise addition of two and five water molecules leads to considerable changes in the relative stability of the hydrated species. Addition of two water molecules at the metal ion in both Gly.Mn+ and GlyZwitt.Mn+ complexes reduces the relative stability of metallic complexes of glycine. For Mn+ = Li+ or Na+, the addition of five water molecules does not change the relative order of stability. In the Gly.K+ complex, the solvation shell of water molecules around K+ ion has, because of the larger size of the potassium cation, a different structure with a reduced number of hydrogen-bonded contacts. This results in a net preference (by 10.3 kJ mol(-1)) of the GlyZwitt.K+H2O5 system. Addition of five water molecules to the glycine complexes containing divalent cations Mg2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ results in a net preference for non-zwitterionic glycine species. The computed relative Gibbs energies are quite high (-10 to -38 kJ mol(-1)), and the NO coordination is preferred in the Gly.Mn+(H2O)5 (Mn+ = Mg2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) complexes over the OO coordination.  相似文献

The stabilities of alkali halide cluster ions [M(MX)n]+ (M ? Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs; X ? F, Cl, Br, I) have been studied by measuring the fragment ion yields following dissociation of the ions in the second field free region of a ZAB-2F mass spectrometer. Extractable cluster ions were observed for certain values of n. It was found that the stabilities of the neutral fragment species formed are also of importance in determining the fragmentation rates. Possible configurations of M and X in the stable ions are discussed.  相似文献

The gas-phase structures of alkali-metal cation complexes of threonine (Thr) are examined using infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy utilizing light generated by a free electron laser in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. Spectra of Li+(Thr) and Na+(Thr) are similar and relatively simple, whereas K+(Thr), Rb+(Thr), and Cs+(Thr) include distinctive new IR bands. Measured IRMPD spectra are compared to spectra calculated at a B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level to identify the structures present in the experimental studies. For the smaller metal cations, the spectra match those predicted for charge-solvated structures in which the ligand exhibits tridentate coordination, M1[N,CO,OH], binding to the amide and carbonyl groups of the amino acid backbone and to the hydroxyl group of the side chain. K+(Thr), Rb+(Thr), and Cs+(Thr) exhibit evidence of the charge-solvated complex, M3[COOH], in which the metal cation binds to the carboxylic acid group. Evidence for a small population of the zwitterionic analogue of this structure, ZW[CO2-], is also present, particularly for the Cs+ complex. Calculations indicate that the relative stability of the M3[COOH] structure is very strongly dependent on the size of the metal cation, consistent with the range of conformations observed experimentally. The present results are similar to those obtained previously for the analogous M+(Ser) complexes, although there are subtle distinctions that are discussed.  相似文献

The interaction of the alkali metal cations, Li+, Na+, and K+, with the amino acid proline (Pro) and its four- and six-membered ring analogues, azetidine-2-carboxylic acid (Aze) and pipecolic acid (Pip), are examined in detail. Experimentally, threshold collision-induced dissociation of the M+(L) complexes, where M = Li, Na, and K and L = Pro, Aze, and Pip, with Xe are studied using a guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometer. From analysis of the kinetic energy dependent cross sections, M(+)-L bond dissociation energies are measured. These analyses account for unimolecular decay rates, internal energy of reactant ions, and multiple ion-molecule collisions. Ab initio calculations for a number of geometric conformations of the M+(L) complexes were determined at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level with single-point energies calculated at MP2(full), B3LYP, and B3P86 levels using a 6-311+G(2d,2p) basis set. Theoretical bond energies show good agreement with the experimental bond energies, which establishes that the zwitterionic form of the alkali metal cation/amino acid, the lowest energy conformation, is formed in all cases. Despite the increased conformational mobility in the Pip systems, the Li+, Na+, and K+ complexes of Pro show higher binding energies. A meticulous examination of the zwitterionic structures of these complexes provides an explanation for the stability of the five-membered ring complexes.  相似文献

A systematic study of cation-pi interactions between alkali metal ions and the cyclopentadienyl ring of ferrocene is presented. The alkali metal (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+) salts of the ditopic mono(pyrazol-1-yl)borate ligand [1,1'-fc(BMe2pz)2]2- crystallize from dimethoxyethane as multiple-decker sandwich complexes with the M+ ions bound to the pi faces of the ferrocene cyclopentadienyl rings in an eta5 manner (fc = (C5H4)2Fe; pz = pyrazolyl). X-ray crystallography of the lithium complex reveals discrete trimetallic entities with each lithium ion being coordinated by only one cyclopentadienyl ring. The sodium salt forms polyanionic zigzag chains where each Na+ ion bridges the cyclopentadienyl rings of two ferrocene moieties. Linear columns [-CpR-Fe-CpR-M+-CpR-Fe-CpR-M+-](infinity) (R = [-BMe2pz]-) are established by the K+, Rb+, and Cs+ derivatives in the solid state. According to DFT calculations, the binding enthalpies of M+-eta5(ferrocene) model complexes are about 20% higher as compared to the corresponding M+-eta6(benzene) aggregates when M+ = Li+ or Na+. For K+ and Rb+, the degree of cation-pi interaction with both aromatics is about the same. The binding sequence along the M+-eta5(ferrocene) series follows a classical electrostatic trend with the smaller ions being more tightly bound.  相似文献

We report UV photodissociation (UVPD) and IR-UV double-resonance spectra of 1,2-dimethoxybenzene (DMB) complexes with alkali metal ions, M(+)·DMB (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs), in a cold, 22-pole ion trap. The UVPD spectrum of the Li(+) complex shows a strong origin band. For the K(+)·DMB, Rb(+)·DMB, and Cs(+)·DMB complexes, the origin band is very weak and low-frequency progressions are much more extensive than that of the Li(+) ion. In the case of the Na(+)·DMB complex, spectral features are similar to those of the K(+), Rb(+), and Cs(+) complexes, but vibronic bands are not resolved. Geometry optimization with density functional theory indicates that the metal ions are bonded to the oxygen atoms in all the M(+)·DMB complexes. For the Li(+) complex in the S(0) state, the Li(+) ion is located in the same plane as the benzene ring, while the Na(+), K(+), Rb(+), and Cs(+) ions are located off the plane. In the S(1) state, the Li(+) complex has a structure similar to that in the S(0) state, providing the strong origin band in the UV spectrum. In contrast, the other complexes show a large structural change in the out-of-plane direction upon S(1)-S(0) excitation, which results in the extensive low-frequency progressions in the UVPD spectra. For the Na(+)·DMB complex, fast charge transfer occurs from Na(+) to DMB after the UV excitation, making the bandwidth of the UVPD spectrum much broader than that of the other complexes and producing the photofragment DMB(+) ion.  相似文献

The vibrational, Raman, and IR, spectra of the five 12-crown-4 (12c4) complexes with Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+ alkali metal cations were measured. Except for a small shift of the position of some bands in the vibrational spectra of the Li+ complex, the vibrational spectra of the five complexes are so similar that it is concluded that the five complexes exist in the same conformation. B3LYP/6-31+G* force fields were calculated for six of the eight predicted conformations in a previous report (J. Phys. Chem. A 2005, 109, 8041) of the 12c4-Li+, Na+, and K+ complexes that are of symmetries higher than the C1 symmetry. These six conformations, in energy order, are of C4, Cs, Cs, C(2v), C(2v), and Cs symmetries. Comparison between the experimental and calculated vibrational frequencies assuming any of the above-mentioned six conformations shows that the five complexes exist in the C4 conformation. This agrees with the fact that the five alkali metal cations are larger than the 12c4 ring cavity. The B3LYP/6-31+G* force fields of the C4 conformation of the Li+, Na+ and K+ complexes were scaled using a set of eight scale factors and the scale factors were varied so as to minimize the difference between the calculated and experimental vibrational frequencies. The root-mean-square (rms) deviations of the calculated frequencies from the experimental frequencies were 7.7, 5.6, and 5.1 cm(-1) for the Li+, Na+, and K+ complexes, respectively. To account for the earlier results of the Li+ complex that the Cs conformation is more stable than the C4 conformation by 0.16 kcal/mol at the MP2/6-31+G* level, optimized geometries of the complex were calculated for the C4 and Cs conformations at the MP2/6-311++G** level. The C4 conformation was calculated to be more stable than the Cs conformation by 0.13 kcal/mol.  相似文献

The dissociation reactions of the adduct ions derived from the four self-complementary deoxydinucleotides, d(ApT), d(TpA), d(CpG), d(GpC), and alkali-metal ions were studied in detail by positive ion electrospray ionization multiple-stage mass spectrometry (ESI-MS(n)). For the [M + H](+) ions of the four deoxydinucleotides, elimination of 5'-terminus base or loss of both of 5'-terminus base and a deoxyribose were the major dissociation pathway. The ESI-MS(n) spectra showed that Li(+), Na(+), and Cs(+) bind to deoxydinucleotides mainly by substituting the H(+) of phosphate group, and these alkali-metal ions preferred to bind to pyrimidine bases rather than purine bases. For a given deoxydinucleotide, the dissociation pathway of [M + K](+) ions differed clearly from that of [M + Li](+), [M + Na](+), and [M + Cs](+) ions. Some interesting and characteristic cleavage reactions were observed in the product-ion spectra of [M + K](+) ions, including direct elimination of deoxyribose and HPO(3) from molecular ions. The fragmentation behavior of the [M + K](+) and [M + W](+) (W = Li, Na, Cs) adduct ions depend upon the sequence of bases, the interaction between alkali-metal ions and nucleobases, and the steric hindrance caused by bases.  相似文献

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) and electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectra of small kappa-carrageenans are reported and discussed. MALDI spectra can be obtained in both positive and negative ion mode. In the absence of extraneous metal ions, positive ions are formed by the attachment of one Na(+) ion to the carrageenan, whereas for negative ions one Na(+) ion is detached from the sulfate group. Multiply charged species are not observed in MALDI. Intense ESI spectra can be obtained in negative ion mode and now multiply charged species are seen. Alkali exchange experiments show that in these small carrageenan anions one, but only one, alkali metal ion is bound in a bidentate coordination with two ionic sulfate groups. G2-type ab initio calculations on model ions HO(-) [M(+)] (-)OH (M = Li, Na, K, Cs), as well as arguments based on a simple Coulombic interaction model, show that the bidentate stabilization energy drops rapidly as the size of the alkali cation increases. Exchange of Na(+) with Li(+) leads to expulsion of the Na(+) ion generating, in ESI, intense multiply charged anions. An attempt is made to rationalize this behavior in terms of hydration effects.  相似文献

A delicate balance between competing and cooperating noncovalent interactions determines the three-dimensional structure of hydrated alkali-metal ion clusters. A critical factor influencing the balance reached is the internal energy content (or effective temperature) of the ion cluster. Cold cluster ions (approximately 50-150 K) have little internal energy, and enthalpic contributions have a greater influence on the relative population of low-lying minima. In clusters whose internal energy distributions correspond to temperatures approximately 250-500 K, entropic effects are expected to influence which structural isomers are present, favoring those where free energy has been minimized. Infrared photodissociation spectra of M(+)(H2O)(x=2-5) (approximately 250-500 K) are reported for M = Li, Na, K, and Cs to explore ion dependencies and entropic effects on the observed three-dimensional structure.  相似文献

Monovalent cations (M+ = Na+, K+, Rb+, and NH4+) and 12-crown-4 were assembled to new supramolecular cation (SC+) structures of the M+(12-crown-4)n (n = 1 and 2), which were incorporated into the electrically conducting Ni(dmit)2 salts (dmit = 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolate). The Na+, K+, and Rb+ salts are isostructural with a stoichiometry of the M+(12-crown-4)2[Ni(dmit)2]4, while the NH4+ salt has a stoichiometry of NH4+(12-crown-4)[Ni(dmit)2]3(CH3CN)2. The electrical conductivities of the Na+, K+, Rb+, and NH4+ salts at room temperature are 7.87, 4.46, 0.78, and 0.14 S cm-1, respectively, with a semiconducting temperature dependence. The SC+ structures of the Na+, K+, and Rb+ salts have an ion-capturing sandwich-type cavity of M+(12-crown-4)2, in which the M+ ion is coordinated by eight oxygen atoms of the two 12-crown-4 molecules. On the other hand, the NH4+ ion is coordinated by four oxygen atoms of the 12-crown-4 molecule. Judging from the M(+)-O distances, thermal parameters of oxygen atoms, and vibration spectra, the thermal fluctuation of the Na+(12-crown-4)2 structure is larger than those of K+(12-crown-4)2 and Rb+(12-crown-4)2. The SC+ unit with the larger alkali metal cation gave a stress to the Ni(dmit)2 column, and the SC+ structure changed the pi-pi overlap mode and electrically conducting behavior.  相似文献

We report UV photodissociation (UVPD) and IR-UV double-resonance spectra of dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) complexes with alkali metal ions (Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Rb(+), and Cs(+)) in a cold, 22-pole ion trap. All the complexes show a number of vibronically resolved UV bands in the 36,000-38,000 cm(-1) region. The Li(+) and Na(+) complexes each exhibit two stable conformations in the cold ion trap (as verified by IR-UV double resonance), whereas the K(+), Rb(+), and Cs(+) complexes exist in a single conformation. We analyze the structure of the conformers with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In the Li(+) and Na(+) complexes, DB18C6 distorts the ether ring to fit the cavity size to the small diameter of Li(+) and Na(+). In the complexes with K(+), Rb(+), and Cs(+), DB18C6 adopts a boat-type (C(2v)) open conformation. The K(+) ion is captured in the cavity of the open conformer thanks to the optimum matching between the cavity size and the ion diameter. The Rb(+) and Cs(+) ions sit on top of the ether ring because they are too large to enter the cavity of the open conformer. According to time-dependent DFT calculations, complexes that are highly distorted to hold metal ions open the ether ring upon S(1)-S(0) excitation, and this is confirmed by extensive low-frequency progressions in the UVPD spectra.  相似文献

Rotationally resolved IR spectra of M+ (H2O)Ar cluster ions for M=Na, K, and Cs in the O-H stretch region were measured in a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. Analysis of the spectra yields O-H stretch vibrational band origins and relative IR intensities of the symmetric and asymmetric modes. The effect of the alkali-metal ions on these modes results in frequency shifts and intensity changes from the gas phase values of water. The A-rotational constants are also obtained from the rotational structure and are discussed. Experimentally, the temperatures of these species were deduced from the relative populations of the K-rotational states. The internal energies and temperatures of the cluster ions for Na and K were simulated using RRKM calculations and the evaporative ensemble formalism. With binding energies and vibrational frequencies obtained from ab initio calculations, the average predicted temperatures are qualitatively consistent with the experimental values and demonstrate the additional cooling resulting from argon evaporation.  相似文献

Bis(calix[4]diquinones) 1 and 2 and double calix[4]diquinone 3 have been synthesized from their corresponding double calix[4]arenes 4, 5, and 6, respectively. Compounds 4-6 have been prepared from one-pot and stepwise syntheses under high pressure. Complexation studies of ligands 1-3 with alkali metal ions such as Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+ were carried out by 1H NMR titrations. Receptors 1 can selectively form 1:1 complexes with Na+. Ligand 2 prefers to form 1:1 complexes with K+ and Cs+. Receptor 3 retained the cone conformation of the calix[4]arene unit upon binding K+ but changed the conformation when complexing Li+ and Na+. Electrochemical studies using cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry showed significant changing of voltammograms of 2 and 3 in the presence of alkali metal ions. Receptor 3 showed the electrochemically switched binding property toward Na+ and K+.  相似文献
