Single chains of a neutral, dendronized polymer with peripheral azide groups ( PG3A ) are co‐deposited onto molecularly modified graphite substrates with a positively charged dendronized polymer ( PG2 ) as well as with negatively charged plasmid dsDNA. PG3A is also prepared near graphite step‐edges. Single PG3A chains are moved with a scanning force microscope tip, into close contact with either of the two polyelectrolytes, as well as the step‐edge at predetermined positions. Treating these structures in situ with UV light leads to photochemically induced cross‐linking between the PG3A chains carrying azide groups and PG2 , dsDNA, and graphite step‐edges, respectively, which is proven by mechanically challenging the “welding” points by pulling on the molecules with the SFM‐tip.

Summary: A multistep synthetic procedure for preparing novel C60‐anchored two‐armed poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) was developed. First, two‐armed poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) bearing a malonate ester core with well‐controlled molecular weight was synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization. The effective Bingel reaction between C60 and the well‐defined polymer was then carried out to yield C60‐anchored polymer. GPC, 1H NMR, and UV‐vis spectroscopy indicated that the C60‐anchored polymer was a monosubstituted and ‘closed’ 6,6‐ring‐bridged methanofullerene derivative.

Oxiranes, such as glycidyl phenyl ether, benzyl glycidate, glycidyl methyl ether, and styrene oxide, were copolymerized with dicarboxylic anhydrides, such as succinic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, and maleic anhydride, by the action of an enzyme in a stepwise reaction to produce the corresponding polyesters containing some ether linkages having a maximum M w of 13 500. Oxiranes, such as glycidol and glycidyl phenyl ether, were also homopolymerized and copolymerized with other oxiranes by the enzyme to produce the corresponding polyethers.

The influence of the reaction medium (organic solvents, water, ionic liquids, supercritical CO2) on the propagation rate in radical polymerizations has very different causes, e.g., hindered rotational modes, hydrogen bonding or electron pair donor/acceptor interactions. Depending on the origin of the solvent influence propagation rate coefficients, kp, may be enhanced by up to an order of magnitude associated with changes in the pre‐exponential or the activation energy of kp. In contrast, non‐specific interactions, size and steric effects lead to rather small changes in the vicinity of the radical chain end and are reflected by modest variations in kp.

Summary: Self‐oscillating polymers and nano‐gel particles consisting of N‐isopropylacrylamide and the ruthenium catalyst of the Belousov‐Zhabotinsky reaction have been prepared. In order to clarify the crosslinking effect on the self‐oscillating behavior, the phase transition behaviors were investigated by measuring the transmittance and the fluorescence intensity of the polymer solution and the gel bead suspension. Cooperative effects due to crosslinking will play an important role for the design of nanoactuators.

Large scale of well‐ordered macroporous π‐conjugated polymer monoliths have been successfully prepared through a new approach using micrometer‐sized naphthalene crystals as templates. The macroporous monoliths of poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and poly(p‐phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) grew along the unidirectional freezing direction inside the template naphthalene crystals which lead to the formation of controlling morphologies and homogeneous diameters. The polymer monoliths show straight and lamella macroporous structures. The diameters of pores and the thickness of pore walls can be controlled by tuning the freezing temperature.

Copolymerization of hepta‐1,6‐diene with ethylene using a cobalt–bis(imino)pyridine complex affords a polymer that contains trans‐1,2‐five‐membered rings in the repeating unit from hepta‐1,6‐diene. The ratio of the repeating units of diene to those of ethylene is controlled from 3: 97 to 50:50, depending on the reaction conditions. Isotope‐labeling reactions reveal that the major chain transfer pathway involves β‐hydrogen elimination of the polymer end formed after ethylene insertion.

Novel fullerene‐grafted poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT)‐based rod‐coil block copolymers have been synthesized. The regioregular P3HT rod block has been synthesized by a modified Grignard metathesis reaction (GRIM). An original in situ end‐capping reaction has been developed in order to convert the P3HT block into an efficient macro‐initiator for the nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) of the coil block. Controlled radical polymerization of the second poly(butylacrylate‐stat‐chloromethylstyrene) [P(BA‐stat‐CMS)] block has been done through various conditions leading to different coil block lengths. The final electron donor‐acceptor block copolymer has been obtained after C60 grafting in soft conditions. Copolymers have been characterized by 1H NMR and size exclusion chromatography. Optical characterizations, before and after C60 grafting, are reported.

Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was synthesized by the RAFT method in the presence of 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate (CPDB) chain transfer agent using different [GMA]/[CPDB] molar ratios. The living radical polymerization resulted in controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersity indices (PDI) of ≈1.1. The polymerization of pentafluorostyrene (PFS) with PGMA as the macro‐RAFT agent yielded narrow PDIs of ≤1.2 at 60 °C and ≤1.5 at 80 °C. The epoxy groups of the PGMA block were hydrolyzed to obtain novel amphiphilic copolymer, poly(glyceryl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(pentafluorostyrene) [PGMA(OH)‐b‐PPFS]. The PGMA epoxy group hydrolysis was confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. DSC investigation revealed that the PGMA‐b‐PPFS polymer was amorphous while the PGMA(OH)‐b‐PPFS displayed a high degree of crystallinity.

One‐dimensional methyl orange fibrils can be easily prepared. They are stable in acidic aqueous solutions and soluble in neutral water. When used to synthesize conducting polymer microtubules, the fibrils act as “hard templates” formally but as “soft templates” effectively. Microtubular structures of polypyrrole, polyaniline, and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) have been achieved successfully via such water‐soluble versatile templates.

Summary: Fully linear polyethylene‐based latexes have been prepared by the hydrogenation of polybuta‐1,4‐diene dispersions. The latter were synthesized via dispersion ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of cycloocta‐1,5‐diene, and hydrogenated using RuCl2(PPh3)3 as catalyst, without any further treatment. A high hydrogenation efficiency was achieved as demonstrated by different techniques including DSC, and 1H NMR and FT‐IR spectroscopy. The hydrogenation process could be carried out without detrimental effect on particle size and colloidal stability as evidenced by optical microscopy and light scattering analysis.

A new π‐conjugated charge‐transfer‐type copolymer of electron‐donating thiophene and electron‐accepting quinoxaline was prepared by organometallic polycondensation. The polymer was soluble in organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, and showed a UV‐vis peak at long wavelengths of 598 nm in chloroform and 629 nm in the film. Its film exhibited a χ(3) peak in the resonance region with a χ(3) value comparable to that of regioregular head‐to‐tail poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl).

The synthesis of poly(β‐alanine) by Candida antarctica lipase B immobilized as novozyme 435 catalyzed ring‐opening of 2‐azetidinone is reported. After removal of cyclic side products and low molecular weight species pure linear poly(β‐alanine) is obtained. The formation of the polymer is confirmed with 1H NMR spectroscopy and MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry. The average degree of polymerization of the obtained polymer is limited to = 8 by its solubility in the reaction medium. Control experiments with β‐alanine as a substrate confirmed that the ring structure of the 2‐azetidinone is necessary to obtain the polymer.

A dextran‐based dual‐sensitive polymer is employed to endow gold nanoparticles with stability and pH‐ and temperature‐sensitivity. The dual‐sensitive polymer is prepared by RAFT polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide from trithiocarbonate groups linked to dextran and succinoylation of dextran after polymerization. The functionalized nanoparticles show excellent stability under various conditions and can be stored in powder‐form. UV and DLS measurements confirm that the temperature‐induced optical changes and aggregation behaviors of the particles are strongly dependent on pH.

Summary: Magnetic nanoparticles have been prepared by a co‐precipitation method and modified with methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane. Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer particles have been prepared by suspension polymerization in silicone oil. The particles possess a high affinity to the template molecules and are rapidly separated under a magnetic field.

Summary: The evolution of the photoinduced birefringence in thin films of narrow polymer fractions is studied and compared with the behavior of the non‐fractionated polymer. The Δnind value decreases by increasing the degree of polymerization ( ) within the oligomeric range but becomes independent of molecular weight starting from a of ≈70. Thermal pretreatment of the films results in higher photoinduced birefringence. The films show good stability of the photorecording.

Poly(dimethylsiloxane) copolymers were synthesized directly from AA/BB monomers employing a CuAAC reaction (click chemistry) in a polyaddition approach. Using organic dialkynes and oligo(siloxane)s end‐functionalized with azide moieties it was possible to obtain siloxane‐based copolymers with TPE properties by click chemistry for the first time. As seen from DSC experiments, properties were strongly dependent on the incorporated organic comonomer.

DNA hydrogels which are composed of an entangled network without a crosslinker are synthesized and examined in regards to their sensitivity to salt and pH changes. The DNA hydrogel fibers only exhibited a marked response – that is a fast and large change in length – under biological conditions ([Na+] = 0.15 M at pH = 7) and are therefore suitable materials for bio‐inspired devices.

A reverse‐barrier technique is used to enable the treatment of electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanofibrous membranes with supercritical carbon dioxide. The treatment induces the formation of nanopores and extended‐chain β crystallites of small lateral dimensions in the nanofibers. It also creates interfiber junctions, resulting in a remarkable improvement in mechanical properties of the membranes. The treated membranes are able to retain their shape very well after loading with an ionic liquid (IL). The ionic conductivity of the IL‐loaded membrane is very close to that of the neat IL.
