The synthesis and characterization of novel first‐ and second‐generation true dendritic reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents carrying 6 or 12 pendant 3‐benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsulfanylpropionic acid RAFT end groups with Z‐group architecture based on 1,1,1‐hydroxyphenyl ethane and trimethylolpropane cores are described in detail. The multifunctional dendritic RAFT agents have been used to prepare star polymers of poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) and polystyrene (PS) of narrow polydispersities (1.4 < polydispersity index < 1.1 for PBA and 1.5 < polydispersity index < 1.3 for PS) via bulk free‐radical polymerization at 60 °C. The novel dendrimer‐based multifunctional RAFT agents effect an efficient living polymerization process, as evidenced by the linear evolution of the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) with the monomer–polymer conversion, yielding star polymers with molecular weights of up to Mn = 160,000 g mol?1 for PBA (based on a linear PBA calibration) and up to Mn = 70,000 g mol?1 for PS (based on a linear PS calibration). A structural change in the chemical nature of the dendritic core (i.e., 1,1,1‐hydroxyphenyl ethane vs trimethylolpropane) has no influence on the observed molecular weight distributions. The star‐shaped structure of the generated polymers has been confirmed through the cleavage of the pendant arms off the core of the star‐shaped polymeric materials. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phase separation of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends was used as a means to segregate PS‐ or PMMA‐functionalized single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in thin films. Dilute solutions (5 wt % in THF) of 1:1 PS/PMMA blends containing the functionalized nanotubes were spin cast and annealed at 180 °C for 12 h. Two different polymer molecular weights were used (Mn = 8000 or Mn = 22,000), and were of approximately equivalent molecular weight to those attached to the surface of the nanotubes. Nanotube functionalization was accomplished using the Cu(I)‐catalyzed [3 + 2] Huisgen cycloaddition, in which alkyne‐decorated nanotubes were coupled with azide‐terminated polymers, resulting in polymer‐SWNT conjugates that were soluble in THF. Characterization of the annealed films by scanning Raman spectroscopy, which utilized the unique Raman fingerprint of carbon nanotubes, enabled accurate mapping of the functionalized SWNTs within the films relative to the two phase‐separated polymers. It was found that nanotube localization within the phase‐separated polymer films was influenced by the type of polymer attached to the nanotube surface, as well as its molecular weight. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to clarify the end-functionalization effect of polymers modified by iminium ion, a model compound with a modified chain end was prepared by directly reactingn-butyllithium withN-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and then quenching by the addition of methanol. It is shown that the model compound includes the iminium ion group and that the adsorption bands in the IR-spectra of the chemically modified polymer were similar to those of model compoundThe adsorption behavior of end-functionalized polystyrene(PS-X) and diblock copolymer of PS and polybutadiene(PB) which were modified by iminium ion(PS-PB-X), were examined over a wide range of molecular weights of these polymers. It is evident that the amount of adsorption increased significantly by the end-functionalization and this trend was especially strong in the low molecular weight polymers (M w<-105). The preference for the end-functionalized polymer was also examined by competitive and sequential adsorption experiments between different molecular weight species. It is shown that a prefered adsorption of PS-X with low molecular mass is pronouced over the adsorption of PS or PS-X with high molecular weight and in the combination of high and low molecular weight species of PS-X, a special enhancement of total adsorption can be observed. This enhancement is based on a combination of different adsorption layers formed by these two molecular weight species.  相似文献

The tadpole‐shaped amphiphilic copolymers with cyclic polystyrene as the head and a linear poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) as the tail have been successfully synthesized by combination of reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and “click” reaction. The synthesis involves two main steps: (1) preparation of a linear acetylene‐terminated PNIPAAM‐b‐PS with a side azido group anchored at the junction between two blocks; (2) intramolecular cyclization reaction to produce the cyclic PS block using “click” chemistry under high dilution. The structures, molecular weights, and molecular weight distributions of the resulted intermediates and the target polymers were characterized by their 1H NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography. The difference of surface property between tadpole‐shaped polymer and its linear precursor was observed, and the water contact angles on the former surface are larger than that of the latter surface. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A protocol for the preparation of polymeric samples for time-of-flight matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (TOF-MALDI-MS) analysis was developed. Dithranol was identified as a good matrix for polystyrene (PS), and the addition of silver for cationization of molecules was determined to be necessary. Based on this preparative method, low molecular weight samples of other polymers [polyisoprene, polybutadiene, poly(ethylene oxide), poly(methyl methacrylate), and polydimethylsiloxane] were analyzed with molecular weights up to 49 ku. The effects of laser intensity were determined to influence the molecular weight distribution of intact oligomers, most significantly for low molecular weight polymers. Linear and reflectron modes of analysis were evaluated; better signal intensity and resolution were obtained in the reflectron mode. The TOF-MALDI-MS measurements are compared with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) for the same polymers. The M n values calculated by TOF-MALDI-MS consistently are higher than values calculated by TOF-SIMS for all classes of polymers with molecular weights up to 8 ku. The molecular weights of the PS calculated from TOF-MALDI-MS are in good agreement with GPC (±10%). The composition of the terminal group on a polymer chain may affect the ion yields. The ion yields of intact oligomers were evaluated as a function of end group composition for both TOF-MALDI-MS and TOF-SIMS. The slight disparity of results between TOF-SIMS and TOF-MALDI-MS for the perfluoroalkyl-terminated PS suggests that the oligomers are desorbed preferentially from the surface in the TOF-SIMS analysis, rather than having an increased ionization probability.  相似文献

The binary interaction energies between styrene and various methacrylates were determined from newly examined phase boundaries with lattice–fluid theory. Because the blends of polystyrene (PS) and poly(cyclohexylmethacrylate) (PCHMA) were only miscible at high molecular weights when the blends were prepared by solution casting from tetrahydrofuran, we examined the miscibility of other blends by changing the molecular weights of PS or methacrylate polymers. On the basis of the phase‐separation temperature caused by the lower critical solution temperature, the miscibility of PS with the various methacrylates appeared to be in the order PCHMA > poly(n‐propyl‐methacrylate) (PnPMA) > poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) > poly(n‐butyl‐methacrylate) (PnBMA) > poly(iso‐butyl‐methacrylate) > poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) > poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate), and the branching of butylmethacrylate appeared to decrease the miscibility with PS. The interaction energies between PS with various methacrylates obtained from phase boundaries with lattice–fluid theory reached minimum value corresponding to the styrene/n‐propylmethacrylate interaction. They were in the order PnPMA < PEMA < PCHMA < PnBMA < PMMA. The difference in the order of miscibility and interaction energies might be attributed to the terms related to the compressibility. The phase‐separation temperatures calculated with the interaction energies obtained here indicated that the PS/PEMA and PS/PnPMA blends at high molecular weights were miscible, whereas the PS/PnBMA blends were immiscible at high molecular weights. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Electrospray droplet impact (EDI)/secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is a new desorption/ionization technique for mass spectrometry in which highly charged water clusters produced from the atmospheric‐pressure electrospray are accelerated in vacuum by several kV and impact the sample deposited on the metal substrate. In this study, several industrial synthetic polymers, e.g. polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were analyzed by EDI/SIMS mass spectrometry. For higher molecular weight analytes, e.g. PS4000 and PEG4600, EDI/SIMS mass spectra could be obtained when cationization salts are added. For the polymers of lower molecular weights, e.g. PEG300 and PEG600, they could be readily detected as protonated ions without the addition of cationization agents. Anionized PS was also observed in the negative ion mode of operation when acetic acid was added to the charged droplet. Compared to matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), ion signal distribution with lower background signals could be obtained particularly for the low‐molecular weight polymers. Poly(n‐butyl acrylate) macromonomers with predetermined molecular weights (1300 < number‐average molecular weight < 23,000) and low polydispersity indices (<1.2) were synthesized from bromine‐terminated atom transfer radical polymerization polymers via end‐group substitution with acrylic acid and methacrylic acid. These macromonomers, having a high degree of end‐group functionalization (>90%), were radically homopolymerized to obtain comb polymers. A high macromonomer concentration, combined with a low radical flux, was needed to obtain a high conversion of the macromonomers and a reasonable degree of polymerization. By the traditional radical copolymerization of the hydrophobic macromonomers with the hydrophilic monomer N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), amphiphilic comb copolymers were obtained. The conversions of the macromonomers and comonomer were almost quantitative under optimized reaction conditions. The molecular weights were high (number‐average molecular weight ≈70,000), and the molecular weight distribution was broad (polydispersity index ≈ 3.5). Kinetic measurements showed simultaneous decreases in the macromonomer and DMAEMA concentrations, indicating a relatively homogeneous composition of the comb copolymers over the whole molecular weight range. This was supported by preparative size exclusion chromatography. The copolymerization of poly(n‐butyl acrylate) macromonomers with other hydrophilic monomers such as acrylic acid or N,N‐dimethylacrylamide gave comb copolymers with multimodal molecular weight distributions in size exclusion chromatography and extremely high apparent molecular weights. Dynamic light scattering showed a heterogeneous composition consisting of small (6–9 nm) and large (23–143 nm) particles, probably micelles or other type of aggregates. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A core‐shell hybrid nanocomposites, possessing a hard core of nano titanium dioxide (n‐TiO2) and a soft shell of brushlike polystyrene (PS), were successfully prepared by surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) at 90 °C in anisole solution using CuBr/PMDETA as the catalyst, in the presence of sacrificial initiator. FTIR, 1H NMR, XPS, TEM, SEM, TGA, and DSC were used to determine the chemical structure, morphology, thermal properties, and the grafted PS quantities of the resulting products. TEM images of the samples provided direct evidence for the formation of a core‐shell structure. The thermal stabilities of the grafted polymers were dramatically elevated relative to that of pristine PS according to TGA results. DSC results demonstrated that the TiO2‐PS nanocomposites exhibited higher glass transition temperature (Tg) compared with pristine PS. The molecular weights of the free polymers formed by sacrificial initiator, which were similar to that of surface‐attached polymers were measured by GPC instrument which showed that the molecular weights of PS were well controlled with a relatively narrow polydispersity index (PDI < 1.2). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel hyperbranched polyselenides and polytellurides with multiple catalytic sites at the branching units has been synthesized via the polycondensation of A2 + B3 monomers. The GPx‐like activities of these polymer mimics were assessed and it was found that the polytellurides showed higher GPx‐like activities than the corresponding polyselenides. Interestingly, the polymers with higher molecular weights and degree of branching (DB) showed higher GPx‐like activities than the analogous lower molecular weight polymer. The enhancement in the catalytical activity of the hyperbranched polymers with increasing molecular weight affirmed the importance of the incorporation of multiple catalytic groups in the macromolecule which increases the local concentration of catalytic sites.  相似文献

Coordination polymerization of renewable 3‐methylenecyclopentene has been investigated for the first time using rare‐earth metal‐based precursors bearing various bulky ligands. All the prepared complexes catalyze controllable polymerization of 3‐methylenecyclopentene into high molecular weight polymers, of which the NPN‐ and NSN‐tridentate non‐Cp ligated lutetium‐based catalytic systems exhibited extremely high activities up to 11 520 kg/(molLu⋅h) in a dilute toluene solution (3.2 g/100 mL) at room temperature. The resultant polymers have pure 1,4‐regioregularity (>99 %) and tailorable number average molecular weights (1–20×104) with narrow molecular weight distributions (polydispersity index (PDI)=1.45–1.79). DFT simulations were employed to study the polymerization mechanism and stereoregularity control.  相似文献

The use of selective interactions between conjugated polymers and single‐walled carbon nanotubes has emerged as a promising method for the separation of nanotubes by electronic type. Although much attention has been devoted to investigating polyfluorenes and their ability to disperse semiconducting carbon nanotubes under specific conditions, other polymer families, such as poly(2,7‐carbazole)s, have been relatively overlooked. Poly(2,7‐carbazole)s have been shown to also preferentially interact with semiconducting carbon nanotubes, however a detailed investigation of polymer parameters, such as molecular weight, has not been performed. We have prepared seven different molecular weights of a poly(2,7‐carbazole), from short chain oligomers to high molecular weight polymers, and have investigated their effectiveness at dispersing semiconducting single‐walled carbon nanotubes. Although all polymer chain lengths were able to efficiently exfoliate carbon nanotube bundles using a mild dispersion protocol, only polymers above a certain threshold molecular weight (Mn ~ 27 kDa) were found to exhibit complete selectivity for semiconducting nanotubes, with no observable signals from metallic species. Additionally, we found the quality of separation to be strongly dependent on the ratio of polymer to carbon nanotube. Contrary to previous reports, we have found that an excess of poly(2,7‐carbazole) leads to incomplete removal of metallic carbon nanotubes. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A method for the preparation of poly(aryl ether thianthrene)s has been developed in which the aryl ether linkage is generated in the polymer‐forming reaction. The thianthrene heterocycle is sufficiently electron‐withdrawing to allow fluoro displacement with phenoxides by nucleophilic aromatic substitution. The monomer for this reaction, 2,7‐difluorothianthrene, can be synthesized in a moderate yield by a simple reaction sequence. Semiempirical calculations at the PM3 level suggest that 2,7‐difluorothianthrene is sufficiently activated, whereas NMR spectroscopy (1H and 13C) indicates that the monomer is only slightly activated or (19F) not sufficiently activated for nucleophilic aromatic substitution. Model reactions with p‐cresol have demonstrated that the fluorine atoms on 2,7‐difluorothianthrene are readily displaced by phenoxides in high yields, and the process has been deemed suitable for polymer‐forming reactions. High‐molecular‐weight polymers have been produced from bisphenol A, bisphenol AF, and 4,4′‐biphenol. The polymers have been characterized with gel permeation chromatography, NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry. The glass‐transition temperatures for the polymers of different compositions and molecular weights range from 138 to 181 °C, and all the polymers have shown high thermooxidative stability, with 5% weight loss values in an air environment approaching 500 °C. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A functionalized compound, 4‐(2‐bromoisobutyryl)‐2,2,6,6‐tetra‐methylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl (Br‐TEMPO), was synthesized and used to synthesize block copolymers through tandem nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, Br‐TEMPO was used to mediate the polymerization of styrene. The kinetics of polymerization proved a typical “living” nature of the reaction and the effectiveness in the mediation of polymerization of Br‐TEMPO. Then the PS‐Br macroinitiator was used to initiate atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A series of acrylates were initiated by PS‐Br macroinitiators in typical ATRP processes at various conditions. The controlled polymerization of ATRP was also confirmed by molecular weight and kinetic analysis. Several cleavable block copolymers of PS‐b‐P(t‐BA), PS‐b‐P(n‐BA), and PS‐b‐PMA, with different molecular weights, were synthesized via this strategy. Relatively low polydispersities (<1.5) were observed and the molecular weights were in agreement with the theoretical ones. Hydrolysis of PS‐b‐P(t‐BA) was carried out, giving amphiphilic block copolymer PS‐b‐PAA without the cleavage of C‐ON bond or ester bond. All the block copolymers have two Tgs as demonstrated by DSC. A typical cleavable block copolymer of PS‐b‐PMA was cleaved by adding phenylhydrazine at 120°C to produce homopolymers in situ.  相似文献

Mechanical properties including the failure behavior of physically assembled gels or physical gels are governed by their network structure. To investigate such behavior, we consider a physical gel system consisting of poly(styrene)‐poly(isoprene)‐poly(styrene)[PS‐PI‐PS] in mineral oil. In these gels, the endblock (PS) molecular weights are not significantly different, whereas, the midblock (PI) molecular weight has been varied such that we can access gels with and without midblock entanglement. Small angle X‐ray scattering data reveals that the gels are composed of collapsed PS aggregates connected by PI chains. The gelation temperature has been found to be a function of the endblock concentration. Tensile tests display stretch‐rate dependent modulus at high strain for the gels with midblock entanglement. Creep failure behavior has also been found to be influenced by the entanglement. Fracture experiments with predefined cracks show that the energy release rate scales linearly with the crack‐tip velocity for all gels considered here. In addition, increase of midblock chain length resulted in higher viscous dissipation leading to a higher energy release rate. The results provide an insight into how midblock entanglement can possibly affect the mechanical properties of physically assembled triblock copolymer gels in a midblock selective solvent. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dynamic mechanical results are reported for segmental relaxation of monodisperse polystyrenes (PSs) with molecular weights of 0.7, 3, 18, and 104 kg/mol and bidisperse PSs created from blending pairs of these materials. The data for the monodisperse polymers confirm previous findings; namely, there is an increase in the glass‐transition temperature normalized temperature dependence of the segmental relaxation times (fragility) with increasing molecular weight, along with a breakdown of the correlation between the fragility and the breadth of the relaxation function. For both the monodisperse and bidisperse PSs, the glass‐transition temperature is a single function of the average number of chain ends, independent of the nature of the molecular weight distribution. It is also found that these materials exhibit fragilities that uniquely depend on the number‐average molecular weight, that is, on the concentration of chain ends. In blends with linear PS, cyclic PS with a low molecular weight behaves as a high polymer, similar to its neat behavior, reflecting the overriding importance of chain ends. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel bifunctional vinyl‐terminated polyurethane macromonomer was applied to the dispersion polymerization of styrene in ethanol. Monodisperse polystyrene (PS) microspheres were successfully obtained above 15 wt % of macromonomer relative to styrene. The steep slope from the reduction of the average particle size reveals that the macromonomer can efficiently stabilize higher surface area of the particles when compared with a conventional stabilizer, poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone). The stable and monodisperse PS microspheres having the weight‐average diameter of 1.2 μm and a good uniformity of 1.01 were obtained with 20 wt % polyurethane macromonomer. The grafting ratio of the PS calculated from 1H NMR spectra linearly increased up to 0.048 with 20 wt % of the macromonomer. In addition, the high molecular weights (501,300 g/mol) of PS with increased glass transition and enhanced thermal degradation temperature were obtained. Thus, these results suggest that the bifunctional vinyl‐terminated polyurethane macromonomer acts as a reactive stabilizer, which gives polyurethane‐grafted PS with a high molecular weight. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The isothermal crystallization kinetics and morphology of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) polymers of different molecular weights have been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry and transmission microscopy (TM). The kinetic parameters of Avrami exponent n, the rate constant k, half time t 1/2, rate at 50 % crystallinity, τ 1/2 for crystallization of different PETs were evaluated from double logarithmic plots of log {?ln[1 ? X(t)]} versus log t, where X(t) is extent of crystallinity at a given crystallization temperature. The crystallization rate of polymers with high molecular weight found to be lower than that of polymers with low molecular weight, at the same crystallization temperature. It was found that the nucleation mechanism and growth dimension of polymers with low molecular weight are different from those of polymers with high molecular weight. The results of TM and isothermal crystallization kinetics showed a consistent trend for the crystallization of all PET polymers studied, comprising a primary stage and a secondary stage. The activation energy in the PET polymers of low molecular weight was found to be lower than that of polymers with high molecular weight.  相似文献

Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a block copolymer (BCP) with a high Flory–Huggins interaction parameter to access 10 nm feature sizes for potential lithographic applications. The investigated BCP is poly[(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline)‐block‐styrene] (PMeOx‐b‐PS), where the PMeOx segment functions as a hydrophilic segment. Two BCPs with different molecular weights were prepared using PMeOx as macroinitiator for copper(0) mediated controlled radical polymerization. The thin film self‐assembly of the obtained PMeOx‐b‐PS was performed by solvent annealing and investigated by atomic force microscopy. Both polymers formed PMeOx cylinders in a PS matrix with an average cylinder diameter of 10.5 nm. Additionally, the ability of the PMeOx domains to selectively degrade under ultraviolet irradiation was explored. It was shown that scission of the PMeOx block does occur selectively, and furthermore that the degraded domains can be removed while leaving the PS matrix intact. By combining synthetic accessibility, small feature sizes, and a selectively cleavable domain, this new BCP system holds significant promise as a lithographic mask for patterning surfaces with high precision. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Core‐cleavable star polymers were synthesized by the coupling of living anionic poly(alkyl methacrylate) arms with either dicumyl alcohol dimethacrylate (DCDMA) or 2,5‐dimethyl‐2,5‐hexanediol dimethacrylate (DHDMA). This synthetic methodology led to the formation of star polymers that exhibited high molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The labile tertiary alkyl esters in the DCDMA and DHDMA star polymer cores were readily hydrolyzed under acidic conditions. High‐molecular‐weight star polymer cleavage led to well‐defined arm polymers with lower molecular weights. Hydrolysis was confirmed via 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the star polymers demonstrated that the DCDMA and DHDMA star polymer cores also thermally degraded in the absence of acid catalysts at 185 and 220 °C, respectively, and the core‐cleavage temperatures were independent of the arm polymer composition. The difference in the core‐degradation temperatures was attributed to the increased reactivity of the DCDMA‐derived cores. TGA/mass spectrometry detected the evolution of the diene byproduct of the core degradation and confirmed the proposed degradation mechanism. The DCDMA monomer exhibited a higher degradation rate than DHDMA under identical reaction conditions because of the additional resonance stabilization of the liberated byproduct, which made it a more responsive cleavable coupling monomer than DHDMA. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
