Summary: Novel non‐covalently connected water‐soluble nanoparticles that contain poly(fluorene‐co‐phenylene) with hydroxy‐capped alkoxy side chains (PF3BOH) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) have been obtained and characterized. With different proportions of PF3BOH and PAA, the shape and size of the nanoparticles can be regulated. The nanoparticles are quite stable in water with no precipitate being observed after weeks. Transmission electron microscopy and dynamic laser light scattering are used to confirm the morphology of the PF3BOH/PAA nanoparticles. Their optical properties have been investigated and show similar optoelectronic properties to a PF3BOH solid film although they do not undergo aggregation.

Summary: A class of new, soluble, π‐conjugated polymers containing a fumaronitrile unit in the main chain were synthesized by the reaction between di(4‐bromophenyl)fumaronitrile and bis(2,2‐dimethylpropane‐1,3‐diyl)‐1,4‐dialkoxyphenylene‐2,5‐diborate employing palladium catalysts. All the polymers were photoluminescent and electrochemically active.

Summary: Amphiphilic cylindrical brush‐coil block copolymers consisting of a polystyrene coil and a cylindrical brush block with poly(acrylic acid) side chains are prepared by ATRP of t‐butylacrylate from a block comacroinitiator. Upon acidolysis of the poly(t‐butylacrylate), water‐soluble polymers were obtained that were observed to form micelles consisting of 4–5 block copolymers on average in aqueous solution. The star‐like nature of such micelles was clearly visualized by scanning force microscopy.

Blue‐light‐emitting 2,7‐carbazole‐based conjugated copolymers have been prepared by Yamamoto or Suzuki cross‐coupling reactions. By introducing highly substituted aromatic comonomers, fully soluble high‐molecular‐weight copolymers have been obtained. Moreover, these amorphous polymeric materials exhibit good thermal stability and interesting redox properties. All these features make these new conjugated polymers highly promising for the development of single‐polymer‐layer blue‐light‐emitting diodes.

Layer‐by‐layer (LbL) assembly was conducted on CaCO3 microparticles pre‐doped with polystyrene‐block‐poly(acrylic acid) (PS‐b‐PAA) micelles, and resulted in micelles encapsulation in the microcapsules after core removal. Distribution of the micelles in the templates and capsules was characterized by transmission electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The micelles inside the capsules connected with each other to form a chain and network‐like structure with a higher density near the capsule walls. The hydrophobic PS cores were then able to load small uncharged hydrophobic drugs while the negatively charged PAA corona could induce spontaneous deposition of water‐soluble positively charged drugs such as doxorubicin.

A series of well‐defined rod‐coil PAA‐b‐DPS block copolymers, containing Fréchet‐type dendronized polystyrene (DPS) with different generation as a rod‐like hydrophobic block and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as a hydrophilic coil were synthesized. The procedure included the following steps: the precursor PMA‐b‐DPS copolymer was prepared through ATRP of Fréchet‐type dendritic styrene macromonomer bearing the first to the third generation (G1–G3), respectively, initiated by poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA‐Br). Then, by converting PMA into PAA by subsequent hydrolysis, the targeted amphiphilic copolymers were obtained. Moreover, by using the rod‐coil amphiphiles as building blocks, large compound micelles and vesicles were formed in a binary solvent mixture of DMF/H2O. Morphological changes in self‐assembly showed dependence on the length of the dendronized block.

Summary: The vapor‐based synthesis and characterization of a reactive polymer, poly[(4‐formyl‐p‐xylylene)‐co‐(p‐xylylene)] ( 1 ), have been reported. The reactive polymer coating enables the immobilization of oligosaccharides via the chemoselective aldehyde‐hydrazide coupling reaction.

Novel luminescent electrospun (ES) fibers have been successfully prepared from a conjugated rod–coil block copolymer, poly[2,7‐(9,9‐dihexylfluorene)]‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PF‐b‐PMMA) using a single‐capillary spinneret. Experiment results indicate that PF‐b‐PMMA ES fibers prepared from THF, THF/DMF (50/50), and DMF contain PF block aggregated structures of dot‐like (5–10 nm), line‐like (10–20 nm), and ellipse‐like structure (25–50 nm), respectively. Such variation of aggregation size leads to a red‐shift of the absorption or luminescence spectra. In addition, the fiber diameters decrease upon enhancing the DMF content. The present study demonstrates that blue light‐emitting ES fibers are successfully prepared from conjugated rod–coil diblock copolymers and their aggregate morphology and photophysical properties could be tuned through use of selective solvent.

Summary: A water‐soluble gold nanoparticle aggregate 2 was prepared by chloroauric acid and a polypseudorotaxane 1 of mono‐6‐thio‐β‐cyclodextrin with poly(propylene glycol) bis(2‐aminopropyl ether) ( ≈ 2 000) in the presence of sodium borohydride in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. The investigative results indicated that the gold nanoparticle aggregate 2 might act as an efficient DNA‐cleavage reagent.

Novel poly[(fluorene)‐co‐(2,8‐dioctyldibenzothiophene‐S,S‐dioxide‐3,7‐diyl)]s were synthesized. The octyl group on the 2,8‐dioctyldibenzothiophene‐S,S‐dioxide (DOSO) unit improved the solubility of the polymers and broadened the optical band gap from 2.95 to 3.20 eV as the content of DOSO unit increases. The electroluminescence (EL) spectra of polymers show CIE coordinates around (0.16, 0.07) independent of the ratio of DOSO units in the polymers, owing to the ICT and steric hindrance dual‐function. A high efficiency of 3.1 cd · A−1 (EQE = 3.9%) was obtained with the configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ba/Al. The results indicate that PF‐3,7DOSOs could be a promising candidate for saturated blue‐emitting polymers with spectral stability and high efficiency.

Hydrogen‐bonded supramolecular copolymers were easily prepared by mixing cyclohexanetricarboxamides with three ( 1 ) and six ( 2 ) alkylsilyl groups, and supramolecular fibers were fabricated. When the composition of 1 and 2 was at or close to equimolarity, the supramolecular copolymer chain was found to have an alternating sequence. This was attributed to the fact that the steric factor of the alkylsilyl side chains effectively controls the unit sequence of the supramolecular polymer chain.

PS‐b‐PAA spherical micelles with a liquid core and a PAA shell are prepared with the assistance of 1,2‐dichloroethane. During the process of adding a mixture of PNIPAM‐b‐P4VP and PEG‐b‐P4VP, multi‐layered micelles with a mixed corona that consists of both PNIPAM and PEG chains are constructed through the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between the PAA block and the P4VP block. When heating above the LCST, the PNIPAM chains collapse onto the PAA/P4VP complex layer while the PEG chains still stretch into the solution through the collapsed PNIPAM layer, which leads to the formation of hydrophilic channels around the PEG chains. The ibuprofen encapsulated in the hollow space can diffuse through the channels and its release rate can be controlled by changing the ratio of PEG chains to PNIPAM chains in the corona.

A novel α,ω‐heterofunctional poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomer possessing methacryloyl and thienyl end groups was prepared by ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide initiated by potassium thienylethoxide and termination of the living PEO ends with methacryloyl chloride. Incorporation of methacryloyl and thienyl groups was confirmed by free‐radical and oxidative polymerization processes, respectively, and by means of 1H NMR analysis.

Summary: The addition of spermidine (SPD) into turbulent flow as a condensing agent showed the abrupt change of turbulent drag reducing (DR) efficiency of λ‐DNA in turbulent flow for the first time. The resultant asymptote DR efficiency explains the origin of those changes, which can be conclusively verified via the electrophoresis experiment. Despite the different fluid conditions, with and without condensing agent, all λ‐DNA molecules possessed the same half‐cut dimension, implying that the discrete change of DNA conformation can dramatically alter the flow characteristics.

Cystamine, when employed as a cross‐linking agent, leads to poly(amidoamine) networks, which on reaction with 2,2′‐dithiodipyridine turn into linear poly(amidoamine)s with side dithiopyridyl groups that easily undergo exchange reactions with reduced L ‐glutathione, a model thiol‐containing biologically active peptide. The resultant products represent the first examples of soluble poly(amidoamine)–peptide conjugates in which the peptide moieties are linked to the polymer chain by S S bonds stable in blood, but cleavable inside cells.

We report for the first time the preparation of single polypyrrole (PPy) molecule chains using a “metal‐organic framework” with 1 nm channels as a template. The obtained one‐dimensional (1‐D) PPy has highly structure order and excellent conductivity, which has improved by as much as five orders of magnitude in comparison with that of 2‐D PPy.

A series of novel biodegradable random copolymers of 5‐benzyloxy‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (5‐benzyloxy‐trimethylene carbonate, BTMC) and glycolide were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization. The copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The incorporation of BTMC units into the copolymer chains results in good solubility of the polymers in common solvents. The in vitro degradation rate can be tailored by adjusting the composition of the copolymers.

This review deals with nanoporous materials made from the self‐assembly of block copolymers with a special interest in the chemical functions covering the surface of their nanopores. A detailed overview of the existing methods and strategies to generate well‐defined organic functional groups covering the surface of the pore walls is provided. This further enables to finely tune the affinity of the pore walls and to perform well‐defined chemical reactions onto them, which is essential for further dedicated applications.
