We develop a new approach to a posteriori error estimation for Galerkin finite element approximations of symmetric and nonsymmetric elliptic eigenvalue problems. The idea is to embed the eigenvalue approximation into the general framework of Galerkin methods for nonlinear variational equations. In this context residual-based a posteriori error representations are available with explicitly given remainder terms. The careful evaluation of these error representations for the concrete situation of an eigenvalue problem results in a posteriori error estimates for the approximations of eigenvalues as well as eigenfunctions. These suggest local error indicators that are used in the mesh refinement process.

In this paper, the weak Galerkin finite element method (WG-FEM) is applied to a pulsed electric model arising in biological tissue when a biological cell is exposed to an electric field. A fitted WG-FEM is proposed to approximate the voltage of the pulsed electric model across the physical media involving an electric interface (surface membrane), and heterogeneous permittivity and a heterogeneous conductivity. This method uses totally discontinuous functions in approximation space and allows the usage of finite element partitions consisting of general polygonal meshes. Optimal pointwise-in-time error estimates in L2-norm and H1-norm are shown to hold for the semidiscrete scheme even if the regularity of the solution is low on the whole domain. Furthermore, a fully discrete approximation based on backward Euler scheme is analyzed and related optimal error estimates are derived.  相似文献

In this article a theoretical framework for the Galerkin finite element approximation to the steady state fractional advection dispersion equation is presented. Appropriate fractional derivative spaces are defined and shown to be equivalent to the usual fractional dimension Sobolev spaces Hs. Existence and uniqueness results are proven, and error estimates for the Galerkin approximation derived. Numerical results are included that confirm the theoretical estimates. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2005  相似文献

In this paper, we propose an efficient spectral‐Galerkin method based on a dimension reduction scheme for eigenvalue problems of Schrödinger equations. Firstly, we carry out a truncation from a three‐dimensional unbounded domain to a bounded spherical domain. By using spherical coordinate transformation and spherical harmonic expansion, we transform the original problem into a series of one‐dimensional eigenvalue problem that can be solved effectively. Secondly, we introduce a weighted Sobolev space to treat the singularity in the effective potential. Using the property of orthogonal polynomials in weighted Sobolev space, the error estimate for the approximate eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions are proved. Error estimates show that our numerical method can achieve spectral accuracy for approximate eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Finally, we give some numerical examples to demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithms and the correctness of the theoretical results.  相似文献

Summary The purpose of this article is to obtainL 2 and uniform norm error estimates for the Galerkin approximation of the solution of certain boundary value problems via a comparison with then-norm projection of the solution. In some cases, these estimates constitute an improvement over known results. This research was supported in part by AEC Grant (11-1)-2075.  相似文献

Previous works on the convergence of numerical methods for the Boussinesq problem were conducted, while the optimal L2‐norm error estimates for the velocity and temperature are still lacked. In this paper, the backward Euler scheme is used to discrete the time terms, standard Galerkin finite element method is adopted to approximate the variables. The MINI element is used to approximate the velocity and pressure, the temperature field is simulated by the linear polynomial. Under some restriction on the time step, we firstly present the optimal L2 error estimates of approximate solutions. Secondly, two‐level method based on Stokes iteration for the Boussinesq problem is developed and the corresponding convergence results are presented. By this method, the original problem is decoupled into two small linear subproblems. Compared with the standard Galerkin method, the two‐level method not only keeps good accuracy but also saves a lot of computational cost. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to support the established theoretical analysis.  相似文献

We consider the approximation of eigenfunctions of a compact integral operator with a smooth kernel by the Galerkin method using wavelet bases. By truncating the Galerkin operator, we obtain a sparse representation of a matrix eigenvalue problem. We prove that the error bounds for the eigenvalues and for the distance between the spectral subspaces are of the orders O(nμ-2nr) and O(μ-nr), respectively, where μn denotes the norm of the partition and r denotes the order of the wavelet basis functions. By iterating the eigenvectors, we show that the error bounds for the eigenvectors are of the order O(nμ-2nr). We illustrate our results with numerical results.  相似文献

A newly developed weak Galerkin method is proposed to solve parabolic equations. This method allows the usage of totally discontinuous functions in approximation space and preserves the energy conservation law. Both continuous and discontinuous time weak Galerkin finite element schemes are developed and analyzed. Optimal‐order error estimates in both H1 and L2 norms are established. Numerical tests are performed and reported. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2013  相似文献

In this paper, we present spectral Galerkin approximation and rigorous error analysis for the Steklov eigenvalue problem in a circular domain. First of all, we use the polar coordinate transformation and technique of separation of variables to reduce the problem to a sequence of equivalent 1‐dimensional eigenvalue problems that can be solved individually in parallel. Then, we derive the pole conditions and introduce weighted Sobolev space according to pole conditions. Together with the approximate properties of orthogonal polynomials, we prove the error estimates of approximate eigenvalues for each 1‐dimensional eigenvalue problem. Finally, we provide some numerical experiments to validate the theoretical results and algorithms.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a combined hybrid discontinuous mixed finite element method for miscible displacement problem with local discontinuous Galerkin method. Here, to obtain more accurate approximation and deal with the discontinuous case, we use the hybrid mixed element method to approximate the pressure and velocity, and use the local discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the concentration. Compared with other combined methods, this method can improve the efficiency of computation, deal with the discontinuous problem well and keep local mass balance. We study the convergence of this method and give the corresponding optimal error estimates in L(L2) for velocity and concentration and the super convergence in L(H1) for pressure. Finally, we also present some numerical examples to confirm our theoretical analysis.  相似文献

In this article, a new weak Galerkin mixed finite element method is introduced and analyzed for the Helmholtz equation with large wave numbers. The stability and well‐posedness of the method are established for any wave number k without mesh size constraint. Allowing the use of discontinuous approximating functions makes weak Galerkin mixed method highly flexible in term of little restrictions on approximations and meshes. In the weak Galerkin mixed finite element formulation, approximation functions can be piecewise polynomials with different degrees on different elements and meshes can consist elements with different shapes. Suboptimal order error estimates in both discrete H1 and L2 norms are established for the weak Galerkin mixed finite element solutions. Numerical examples are tested to support the theory.  相似文献

Summary The convergence of a Galerkin approximation of the Orr-Sommerfeld eigenvalue problem, which is defined in a semi-infinite domain, is studied theoretically. In case the system of trial functions is based on a composite of Jacobi polynomials and an exponential transform of the semi-infinite domain, the error of the Galerkin approximation is estimated in terms of the transformation parametera and the numberN of trial functions. Finite or infinite-order convergence of the spectral Galerkin method is obtained depending on how the transformation parameter is chosen. If the transformation parameter is fixed, then convergence is of finite order only. However, ifa is varied proportional to 1/N with an exponent 0<<1, then the approximate eigenvalue converges faster than any finite power of 1/N asN. Some numerical examles are given.  相似文献

Discontinuous Stable Elements for the Incompressible Flow   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
In this paper, we derive a discontinuous Galerkin finite element formulation for the Stokes equations and a group of stable elements associated with the formulation. We prove that these elements satisfy the new inf–sup condition and can be used to solve incompressible flow problems. Associated with these stable elements, optimal error estimates for the approximation of both velocity and pressure in L 2 norm are obtained for the Stokes problems, as well as an optimal error estimate for the approximation of velocity in a mesh dependent norm.  相似文献

We consider the approximation of eigenfunctions of a compact integral operator with a smooth kernel by a degenerate kernel method. By interpolating the kernel of the integral operator in both the variables, we prove that the error bounds for eigenvalues and for the distance between the spectral subspaces are of the orders h 2r and h r respectively. By iterating the eigenfunctions we show that the error bounds for eigenfunctions are of the orders h 2r . We give the numerical results.   相似文献

Convergence of an approximate method for determining vibrational eigenpairs of an elastic solid containing an incompressible fluid is examined. The field variables are solid displacement and fluid pressure. We show that in suitable Sobolev spaces a variational formulation exists whose solution eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are identified with those of a compact operator. A nonconforming finite element approximation of this variational problem is described and optimal a priori error estimates are obtained for both the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.

The eigenvalue problem for linear differential operators is important since eigenvalues correspond to the possible energy levels of a physical system. It is also important to have good estimates of the error in the computed eigenvalues. In this work, we use spline interpolation to construct approximate eigenfunctions of a linear operator using the corresponding eigenvectors of a discretized approximation of the operator. We show that an error estimate for the approximate eigenvalues can be obtained by evaluating the residual for an approximate eigenpair. The interpolation scheme is selected in such a way that the residual can be evaluated analytically. To demonstrate that the method gives useful error bounds, we apply it to a problem originating from the study of graphene quantum dots where the goal was to investigate the change in the spectrum from incorporating electron–electron interactions in the potential.  相似文献

A compressible nuclear waste-disposal contamination in porous media is modeled by a coupled system of partial differential equations. The approximation of this system by a Galerkin method that makes use of a modified method of characteristics for the brine, radionuclides, and heat and by a mixed finite element method for the pressure and velocity are analyzed. Optimal order error estimates are obtained. This article improves upon previous works in two aspects. First, error analysis is given with no restriction on the diffusion-dispersion tensors. That is, we have included the effects of molecular diffusion and dispersion. Secondly, optimal error estimates in H1 and L2 are derived. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this paper, the eigenvalue approximation of a compact integral operator with a smooth kernel is discussed. We propose asymptotic error expansions of the iterated discrete Galerkin and iterated discrete collocation methods, and asymptotic error expansion of approximate eigenvalues. We then apply Richardson extrapolation to obtain higher order super-convergence of eigenvalue approximations. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the theoretical estimate.  相似文献
