Rheological and solid‐state physical properties of blends containing high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) and a polyampholyte derivative (PE‐g‐PA) are assessed along with their onium ion‐exchanged montmorillonite clay (NR‐MM) nanocomposites. Strong deviations from the log‐additivity rule of zero‐shear viscosity, combined with synergistic behavior in tensile moduli, are consistent with a multi‐phase blend morphology. While this affects clay dispersion in filled blends, PE‐g‐PA/HDPE based nanocomposites are shown to exhibit a favorable balance between material stiffness and ductility.

Summary: A new approach is introduced to create submicrometer patterned surfaces using multilayer polymer films that contain alternating layers of two polymers, linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) and ethylene‐co‐(acrylic acid) copolymer (EAA). Patterned templates have been prepared by microtoming the multilayer molded sheets. Regionally confined chemical functionality is confirmed by grafting an amine‐terminated biotin and adsorbing streptavidin specifically on the alternating layers of EAA.

Summary: Ethylene and 10‐undecen‐1‐ol have been successfully copolymerized by an organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT)‐intercalated metallocene catalyst, Et[Ind]2ZrCl2, activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO). The obtained hydroxy‐functionalized polyethylene (PE‐OH)/OMMT nanocomposites exhibit enhanced structural stability as compared with the neat PE‐based ones, with no significant collapse of the nanocomposite structure being detected by WAXD examination after high‐temperature processing. The simultaneous polyolefin functionalization provides an effective and convenient solution to stabilize the PE/MMT nanocomposite structure formed by in‐situ polymerization.

Summary: This communication describes a novel kind of PMMA‐PEG semi‐interpenetrating network (semi‐IPN) which shows excellent shape‐memory behavior at two transition temperatures, the Tm of the PEG crystal and the Tg of the semi‐IPN. Based on a reversible order‐disorder transition of the crystals below and above the Tm of PEG, and the large difference in storage modulus below and above the Tg of the semi‐IPN, the polymer has a recovery ratio of 91 and 99%, respectively.

Rapidly shrinking poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels are prepared by crosslinking with self‐assembled nanogels that consist of cholesteryl‐ and methacryloyl‐substituted pullulan (CHPMA). The CHPMA nanogel (Rh = 26.4 nm) was used as a crosslinker for a hydrophilic nanodomain. Transmission electron microscopy images of the nanogel‐crosslinked PNIPAM hydrogel reveal a well‐defined nanoporous structure. The nanogel‐crosslinked PNIPAM hydrogel shows rapid shrinking based on its structure. The shrinking half‐time was ≈2 min, which is about 3 400 times faster than that of a PNIPAM hydrogel crosslinked by methylene(bisacrylamide).

But‐3‐en‐1‐ol has been pre‐protected by triisobutylaluminium and terpolymerized with ethylene and norbornene by rac‐[Et(Ind)2]ZrCl2/MAO catalysts. The strong polarity of diisobutyl(but‐3‐en‐1‐oxy)aluminum causes a slight reduction in the catalyst activity and yields a small fraction of crystallinity. The but‐3‐en‐1‐ol content in the terpolymer is as high as 3.2% and can be readily adjusted by varying the reaction conditions. When the norbornene/ethylene ratio is over 10, the norbornene incorporation efficiency is not affected by the polar monomer and is close to that of the copolymerization. Similar to the ethylene/norbornene copolymers, the thermal properties of the obtained terpolymers are mainly determined by their norbornene contents.

Summary: Uniform one‐dimensional (1D) structures of o‐phenylenediamine (oPD) oligomers are obtained by direct mix of AgNO3 and oPD aqueous solutions at room temperature. The formation of the 1D structures involves two stages: (1) oxidation of oPD by AgNO3, yielding individual oPD oligomers; and (2) self‐assembly of the oligomers, forming the 1D structures. Upon decreasing medium pH, the 1D structures can break‐apart to form individual oligomers, or vice versa. It is also found that both the concentration and molar ratio of reactants can influence the morphology of the structures thus formed.

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of micellization of block copolymer with hydrophilic nonionic corona‐forming blocks and weak polyelectrolyte (wPE) core‐forming blocks with pH‐triggered solubility in aqueous solutions. We demonstrate that in addition to micelles with neutral cores, there exist two other types of micelles with PE‐ or ionomer‐like cores, in which monovalent counterions are released or condensed on core wPE block, respectively. The transition between the two types of micelles occurred upon changes in ionization of the PE core block and resulted in nonmonotonous changes of aggregation number as a function of pH. Such micelles with stimulus responsive cores represent promising nanocarriers for controlled delivery applications.

A method for the preparation of well‐defined crystallites of MgCl2‐supported Ziegler‐Natta catalysts on Si wafers has been developed. This has been achieved by the spin‐coating of a MgCl2 solution onto a flat Si wafer, followed by controlled crystal growth to give well‐defined MgCl2 · nEtOH crystallites. The growth of the crystallites on the flat silica facilitates their characterization using electron and scanning probe microscopy. The relative proportions of 120° and 90° edge angles indicate the preference for the formation of a particular crystallite face for the MgCl2. Polyethylene has been identified to be formed on the lateral faces of the crystallite.

In polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) thin films, microphase‐separated brushes on the square platelets can be obtained via fast solvent evaporation by controlling the tethering density (0.08 < σ < 0.11). The tethering density of the brushes is proportional to the thickness of the PEO crystal and increases with increasing initial solution heating temperature (Ti). When Ti < Tm, where Tm is the melting point of PEO, brushes with microphase‐separated structures are observed. The formation of microphase‐separated brushes depends on two factors: the strong incompatibility between PS and noncrystalline PEO chains (attached to the crystalline PEO) and the weak interaction between PS‐PS brushes.

Poly(ethersulfone) membranes were surface modified in a one‐step procedure. For this purpose, the membranes were soaked with aqueous solutions of different low‐molecular weight molecules bearing diverse hydrophilic functionalities and subject to electron beam treatment. No catalysts, photoinitiators, organic solvents or other toxic reagents were used, and no additional synthetic or purification steps were required.

Summary: A superhydrophobic coating was facilely fabricated in one step by casting bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC) solution under moisture. Vapor‐induced phase separation occurred during the solidifying process and a rough surface with a micro‐nano‐binary structure (MNBS) similar to the microstructure shown on lotus leaf was formed.

A novel amphiphilic diblock copolymer composed of a hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) and a hydrophobic polymethacrylate with photochromic azopyridine moieties in the side groups was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. The copolymeric vesicles showed photoinduced circular process including fusion, damage and defect formation, disruption, disintegration and rearrangement in H2O/THF during the irradiation of UV light. The process of photoresponsive cycle can be inhibited at any moment by visible light.

Optically active polymer containing P‐stereogenic bisphosphine as a repeating unit in the main was successfully synthesized. A coordinated borane on the phosphorus atom could be completely removed by an organic base under mild condition, and the successive reaction with Pd afforded the corresponding polymer complex. The chirality of P‐stereogenic centers was transferred to the m‐phenylene‐ethynylene linkers by complexation because of the prohibition of the rotary motion of the bisphosphine‐Pd unit.

Summary: A pH‐sensitive block copolymer is synthesized by step polymerization and its pH‐sensitive micellization‐demicellization behavior is studied. This polymer has a hydrophilic MPEG (shell) and hydrophobic but pH‐sensitive poly(β‐amino ester) (core), which can form a self‐assembled micelle. As confirmed by fluorescence spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS), this polymer shows a sharp pH‐sensitive micellization‐demicellization behavior. It is confirmed that the pH sensitivity is affected by the molecular weight ratio between the MPEG and poly(β‐amino ester).

Summary: The grafting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) onto silica nanoparticles was performed in situ by the ring‐opening polymerization of the oxirane monomer initiated from the mineral surface using aluminium isopropoxide as an initiator/heterogeneous catalyst. Alcohol groups were first introduced onto silica by reacting the surfacic silanols with prehydrolyzed 3‐glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane. The alcohol‐grafted silica played the role of a coinitiator/chain‐transfer agent in the polymerization reaction and enabled the formation of irreversibly bonded polymer chains. Silica nanoparticles containing up to 40 wt.‐% of a hairy layer of grafted PEO chains were successfully produced by this technique.

Novel conjugated carbazole polymers based on the alkyne‐linked 1,8‐carbazole structure are synthesized in high yield by the Sonogashira cross‐coupling reaction and acetylenic oxidative coupling reaction. The polymers are thermally stable and highly soluble in common organic solvents such as CHCl3, CH2Cl2, and THF. As compared to ethynylene‐linked polymer, the butadiynylene‐linked polymer display a bathochromic shift in the absorption maximum and end absorption position. In addition, the fluorescence behaviors in CH2Cl2 are almost identical for both polymers. Electrochemical measurements indicate that the ethynylene‐linked polymer possesses a lower first oxidation potential than the butadiynylene‐linked one.

Summary: A simple route to an ordered array of metal/semiconductor oxide composite nanodots is presented. Micellar monolayer films of polystyrene‐block‐poly(2‐vinyl pyridine) (PS‐b‐P2VP) loaded with HAuCl4 in the P2VP nanodomains are used as templates. TiO2 is generated selectively within the polar P2VP domains of PS‐b‐P2VP/HAuCl4 films by chemical vapor deposition of TiCl4. Subsequent removal of the organic matrix by oxygen plasma or UV light leads to an array of Au/TiO2 composite nanoparticles on the substrate surface.

We applied 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition to bind ethynylferrocene onto 6I‐azido‐6I‐deoxycyclomaltoheptaose under microwave assisted conditions. The process was investigated by 1H NMR, FT‐IR spectroscopy, and MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry. The ability of the synthesized compound to self‐organize to cyclic supramolecular structures was investigated by dynamic light scattering measurements and cryo‐transmission electron microscopy.

End‐group analyses of the oligo‐ and polypropylenes produced with bis(phenoxy‐imine) Zr and Hf complexes with methylaluminoxane (MAO) indicate that the polymerization is initiated by two consecutive 1,2‐insertions and is terminated by a β‐H transfer following a 2,1‐insertion. Our data indicate that chain propagation occurs with prevailing 1,2‐regiochemistry but with considerable regioerrors, and with virtually no stereoselectivity.
