We report here a facile synthesis of high performance electro‐active polymer actuator based on a sulfonated polyimide with well‐defined silver electrodes via self‐metallization. The proposed method greatly reduces fabrication time and cost, and obviates a cation exchange process required in the fabrication of ionic polymer‐metal composite actuators. Also, the self‐metallized silver electrodes exhibit outstanding metal‐polymer adhesion with high conductivity, resulting in substantially larger tip displacements compared with Nafion‐based actuators.

Functional three‐dimensional (3D) micropatterns of diacetylene supramolecules embedded in a host polymer have been successfully fabricated by a replica‐molding (REM) technique. Dimensional reduction as a result of liquid evaporation during the curing process does not affect the conformational features of the transferred patterns. Polymerization of the diacetylene vesicles using 254 nm UV‐light irradiation from the back‐side of the transparent substrate induces blue colored polydiacetylene (PDA) micro‐images. Interestingly, the polymerization selectively occurs in the molded areas because of the sub‐300 nm light blocking property of SU‐8. 3D fluorescence patterns are readily obtained by heat treatment of the blue images on the film.

Binary reactive/inert antifouling polymer brushes were grafted via a two step surface initiated polymerization from printed initiator monolayer and provided robust, effective polymeric surfaces for bioattachment with distinguishably reduced non‐specific adsorption. This synthetic strategy can be harnessed to build complex binary polymeric structures on substrate surfaces and the polymer brush surfaces reported in the present paper can be widely used for versatile biological study.

Porous surface patterns are used in a wide variety of practical applications. Honeycomb‐patterned porous polymer films are good templates for preparing porous surfaces due to their simple fabrication and the arrangement of pores on the surface. Catechol groups include in adhesive protein of mussels have attracted much attention due to their highly and substrate‐independent adhesive properties. In this paper, highly and substrate‐independent adhesive honeycomb‐patterned porous polymer films are prepared by using amphiphilic copolymer having catechol moieties. Furthermore, porous surface patterns are transferred on various organic or inorganic substrates by wet etching with using adhesive honeycomb films as templates.

Intrinsically glucoside‐based microspheres are prepared in olive oil via a water in oil inverse suspension polymerization. The microspheres are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), evidencing the intrinsic glucose character of the spheres. A novel boronic acid fluorescent molecule was subsequently conjugated to the microspheres in an aqueous environment, exhibiting the spatial and uniform distribution of glucoside as well as the affinity of the microspheres to bind with boron, evidenced via fluorescence spectroscopy measurements.

Summary: The grafting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) onto silica nanoparticles was performed in situ by the ring‐opening polymerization of the oxirane monomer initiated from the mineral surface using aluminium isopropoxide as an initiator/heterogeneous catalyst. Alcohol groups were first introduced onto silica by reacting the surfacic silanols with prehydrolyzed 3‐glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane. The alcohol‐grafted silica played the role of a coinitiator/chain‐transfer agent in the polymerization reaction and enabled the formation of irreversibly bonded polymer chains. Silica nanoparticles containing up to 40 wt.‐% of a hairy layer of grafted PEO chains were successfully produced by this technique.

Some new water‐soluble bis‐porphyrins, constituted of two porphyrin units spaced by means of aliphatic bridges of different lengths, were synthesized and characterized by MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry, 1H NMR and UV‐vis spectroscopy. The hydrosolubility of these uncharged compounds was guaranteed from the presence of six long PEG chains bound on the peripheral positions of the two porphyrins. Cobalt and zinc derivatives were also prepared. In the case of Co‐bis‐porphyrin, the appearance of induced circular dichroism (ICD) signals in water solution confirmed the formation of stable complexes with some amino acids, in which the bis‐porphyrin behaves like molecular tweezers.

Reactions between the ethylene groups in the backbone of conjugated polymers under UV illumination and heat treatment result in the cross‐linking of the main polymer chains. The cross‐linking leads to two simultaneous results in the polymer: excellent solvent resistance and increased bandgap. Using this reaction, three‐color polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) with a multi‐layer structure can be easily realized by a dry photo‐pattern in an active‐gas‐free environment. Multi‐layer blue devices with dramatically enhanced efficiency can also be achieved conveniently.

Summary: Microwave‐assisted ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid using zinc oxide as a catalyst is investigated. By adding 30 wt.‐% ionic liquid, poly(ε‐caprolactone) with a weight‐average molar mass of 28 500 g · mol−1 is obtained at 85 W for 30 min. The results indicate that the polymerization could be efficiently enhanced in the presence of ionic liquids under microwave irradiation because ionic liquids can effectively absorb microwave energy.

Shining a light on click chemistry: The use of UV‐radiation as trigger signal provides a facile means to obtain spatial and temporal control over polymer conjugation reactions in addition to providing a further means of achieving orthogonality in click transformations. In the current contribution, UV‐radiation was employed to induce a highly efficient Diels–Alder conjugation of polymeric building blocks via the photo‐induced in situ formation of highly reactive cis‐dienes from a 2‐methylbenzophenone precursor.

Summary: In order to achieve a reasonable response time in an electrochromic display, viologen‐modified porous polymeric microspheres of various porosities have been used as substrates. Porous microspheres are prepared using seeded polymerization in the presence of a porogen. Based on ionic conductivity and the chronocoulometry measurements, it is confirmed that the electrolyte content increases, and the resistance of the polymer particles in the device decreases as the specific surface area of the porous particles increases. This results in a rapid response time of 270 ms.

A direct access to photochromic polymeric vesicles was demonstrated via polymerization‐induced self‐assembly and reorganization (PISR). The resulting vesicles displayed interesting photochromic behaviors different from that of their free polymer chains in DMF, and the vesicles exhibited stronger fluorescence and excellent photostability due to confinement of conformational flexibility of the polymer chains in aggregates.

Summary: A new NLO‐active lambda‐shaped main‐chain polyimide that comprises a two‐dimensional carbazole chromophore was synthesized. This polyimide exhibits high thermal and temporal stability. It can endure temperatures of up to 240 °C for a transient time and maintain a large SH signal at 100 °C for a long time because embedding the two‐dimensional chromophores into the polymer backbone effectively suppresses the randomization of the oriented dipole at high temperatures.

4‐Vinylbenzoyl azide was synthesized from p‐vinylbenzoic acid and polymerized by free radical polymerization. The obtained polymer contained acyl azide groups which were thermally transformed to the corresponding isocyanato groups. Reactions on these polymers with ethanol, hydroxyethyl methacrylate and 1‐pyrenebutanol proceeded quantitatively. Time‐resolved FT‐IR studies of the reactions with ethanol were carried out by varying the concentration and temperature. The effect of the solvent polarity on the Curtius rearrangement was investigated.

Summary: An amino‐functionalized bipyridine ligand was prepared in order to serve as a bridging unit to an activated low‐molecular‐weight monomethyl ether of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). Coordination of a ruthenium(II ) phenantroline precursor onto the formed PEG‐containing bipyridine ligand yielded a metal‐containing polymer which shows interesting properties for solar cell applications.

The synthesis of cationic mono‐(6‐O‐(1‐vinylimidazolium))‐ß‐cyclodextrin with toluenesulfonate as the corresponding anion is described. Free‐radical copolymerization of the resulting host–guest complex with N‐isopropylacrylamide or N,N‐diethylacrylamide yielded copolymers showing a temperature‐controlled solubility window in water. The impact of different anionic guests and salt concentrations on solubility behavior was investigated via turbidity measurements.

Novel glucosamine hydrochloride functionalized water‐soluble conjugated polyfluorene was easily synthesized through Cu(I)‐catalyzed azide/alkyne “click” ligation and Suzuki coupling polymerization. The water‐solubility and biocompatibility of the polymer were improved after grafting glucosamine hydrochloride to the side chains of the conjugated polymer. As a fluorescent model system of chitosan, its interaction with single‐stranded DNA was studied by spectrofluorometric titration.

si‐RAFT polymerization is widely used for surface modification. However, how the surface radicals terminate requires further elucidation. A kinetic model is developed for si‐RAFT via the R group approach. The model describes the molecular weight of grafted polymers as well as polymer layer thickness and various chain concentrations. It is shown that surface/surface radical termination plays an important role. The termination is facilitated by the migration of surface radicals through “hopping” and “rolling” mechanisms. “Hopping” occurs through activation/deactivation cycles between surface and solution chains, dependent on the RAFT concentration in solution. “Rolling” occurs through transfers between surface/surface chains, dependent on the grafting density at surface.

Large scale of well‐ordered macroporous π‐conjugated polymer monoliths have been successfully prepared through a new approach using micrometer‐sized naphthalene crystals as templates. The macroporous monoliths of poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and poly(p‐phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) grew along the unidirectional freezing direction inside the template naphthalene crystals which lead to the formation of controlling morphologies and homogeneous diameters. The polymer monoliths show straight and lamella macroporous structures. The diameters of pores and the thickness of pore walls can be controlled by tuning the freezing temperature.
