Surfactant‐grafted hydrogels with a fast response to temperature were prepared. In order to clarify the mechanism of rapid shrinking, the effects of the grafted surfactant and the homogeneity of the main chain were investigated. Poly(NIPAAm‐co‐S180A) gels prepared using a chemical cross‐linker (bis‐PNS gels) exhibited rapid shrinking, as did PNS gels prepared by γ‐ray irradiation (γ‐PNS gels). This suggested that the rapid shrinking of the PNS gel did not depend on the homogeneity of the main‐chain structure. The shrinking kinetics of the bis‐PNS gels depended on the amount of the introduced surfactant, which means that shrinking is enhanced by micelle formation as a dynamic driving force. From the analysis by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning microscopic light scattering (SMILS), it was suggested that the micelle structure, which induced rapid shrinking, existed in the bis‐PNS gel.

A novel blue‐light emitting terphenyl‐bridged ladder polysiloxane ( TBLP) was prepared by the condensation of a tetrasilanol monomer via a ladder supramolecular structure. TBLPs emit narrow blue light (420 nm) with high quantum yields (0.96) in diluted solution and shows no evident fluorophore aggregation in the solid state, indicating that the terphenyls are well isolated due to confinement of the ladder‐rungs. In addition, it has excellent emission stability at high temperature based on TGA, DSC and annealing experiments. Overall, TBLPs can be considered as a potential material for fabricating stable and high‐efficiency blue‐light emitting optoelectronic devices.

Summary: The synthesis and thermal, redox and photoluminescence properties of a soluble donor‐acceptor polyplatinayne with the electron‐accepting silole ring and its model compound are described. The polymer has an optical band gap of 2.10 eV which is much lower than that of thienyl‐ or silyl‐bridged congeners. The incorporation of electron‐accepting silole unit in the metallopolymer main chain creates a new π‐conjugated system that features unique donor‐acceptor characteristics.

A series of novel biodegradable random copolymers of 5‐benzyloxy‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (5‐benzyloxy‐trimethylene carbonate, BTMC) and glycolide were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization. The copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The incorporation of BTMC units into the copolymer chains results in good solubility of the polymers in common solvents. The in vitro degradation rate can be tailored by adjusting the composition of the copolymers.

Summary: A chitin‐xylan hybrid polysaccharide having β(1 → 4)‐linked alternating structure of N‐acetyl‐D ‐glucosamine and D ‐xylose was synthesized via chitinase‐catalyzed polymerization. An oxazoline derivative of D ‐xylosyl‐β(1 → 4)‐N‐acetyl‐D ‐glucosamine ( 1 ) was effectively polymerized by the catalysis of chitinase from Bacillus sp., giving rise to a water‐soluble chitin‐xylan hybrid polysaccharide ( 2 ) in good yields. Molecular weights ( ) of 2 reached 1 500, which corresponds to 8–10 saccharide units.

Self‐assembly of two‐dimensional (2D) structures from functional molecules is of great scientific importance. Herein, using a typical linear conducting polymer, polyaniline as building blocks, 2D single crystalline microplates are successively produced. The structure of 2D microplates is clearly defined by selected area electron diffraction, X‐ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. Owing to the anisotropic arrangement of linear conjugated PANI molecules, the microplate shows a typical anisotropic electrical transport property.

Novel linear poly(NIPA‐co‐CL) copolymers have been synthesized by radical copolymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and 2‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxepane (MDO). The structure of copolymers was confirmed by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. Cross‐linked poly(NIPA‐co‐CL) hydrogels have also been prepared in toluene using N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as cross‐linking agent. The hydrogels thus obtained exhibit good temperature response and are biodegradable in the presence of proteinase K.

A new copolymer bearing a cysteine moiety, designed for molecular interaction, metal‐ion detection, and chiral recognition, was synthesised starting from the dibromo derivative of methyl N‐(tert‐butoxycarbonyl)‐S‐thien‐3‐ylcysteinate and distannylthiophene through a Stille coupling reaction. UV‐vis spectroscopy, circular dichroism, NMR spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography analyses evidenced that this polymer is able to form self‐assembling structures, through the formation of a hydrogen‐bond network, not only in the solid state but also in solution.

Summary: The vapor‐based synthesis and characterization of a reactive polymer, poly[(4‐formyl‐p‐xylylene)‐co‐(p‐xylylene)] ( 1 ), have been reported. The reactive polymer coating enables the immobilization of oligosaccharides via the chemoselective aldehyde‐hydrazide coupling reaction.

A new π‐conjugated charge‐transfer‐type copolymer of electron‐donating thiophene and electron‐accepting quinoxaline was prepared by organometallic polycondensation. The polymer was soluble in organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, and showed a UV‐vis peak at long wavelengths of 598 nm in chloroform and 629 nm in the film. Its film exhibited a χ(3) peak in the resonance region with a χ(3) value comparable to that of regioregular head‐to‐tail poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl).

A series of novel pH‐ and temperature‐responsive diblock copolymers composed of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly[(L ‐glutamic acid)‐co‐(γ‐benzyl L ‐glutamate)] [P(GA‐co‐BLG)] were prepared. The influence of hydrophobic benzyl groups on the phase transition of the copolymers was studied for the first time. With increasing BLG content in P(GA‐co‐BLG) block, the thermal phase transition of the diblock copolymer became sharper at a designated pH and the critical curve of phase diagram of the diblock copolymer shifted to a higher pH region. Notably, when the BLG content in P(GA‐co‐BLG) block was more than 30 mol.‐%, the diblock copolymer responded sharply to a narrow pH change in the region of pH 7.4–5.5.

Summary: The synthesis of well‐defined uniform and spherical sub‐micron polymeric spheres, specifically poly[styrene‐co‐(glycidyl methacrylate)] (PSGMA) with a uniform size distribution and surface chemical functionality, is described. It is shown that the surface can be modified with a multi‐amine functional polymer, polyethyleneimine (PEI), most likely through covalent bonding in addition to electrostatic attraction. The PEI acts both as a stabilizing agent and a complexation agent for the deposition of noble metal Ag nanoparticles.

Fast‐degrading, salicylate‐based poly(anhydride‐esters) were designed to degrade and release the active component, salicylic acid (SA), within 1 week. The polymer degradation was enhanced by using shorter or oxygen‐containing aliphatic chains. A copolymer of diglycolic acid was also made with a salicylate‐based diacid for comparison of polymer properties, including SA release. Both methods resulted in polyanhydrides with molecular weights ranging from 14 500 to 27 800 Da and displayed glass transition temperatures near physiological conditions, namely 33–40 °C. The homo‐ and copolymers completely degraded within one week releasing the chemically incorporated SA.

Summary: Self‐oscillating polymers and nano‐gel particles consisting of N‐isopropylacrylamide and the ruthenium catalyst of the Belousov‐Zhabotinsky reaction have been prepared. In order to clarify the crosslinking effect on the self‐oscillating behavior, the phase transition behaviors were investigated by measuring the transmittance and the fluorescence intensity of the polymer solution and the gel bead suspension. Cooperative effects due to crosslinking will play an important role for the design of nanoactuators.

Summary: A new water‐soluble cationic ammonium‐functionalized poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) (PPV‐NEtMe) was successfully synthesized and exhibited high sensitivity (Ksv = 6.9 × 107 M −1) on rubredoxin, a type of anionic iron‐sulfur (Fe‐S) proteins. Further investigation showed that the biosensitivity of the cationic conjugated polymer is strongly dependent on the nature of the buffer solution and the concentration of the conjugated polymer used in the analyses.

Summary: A novel polymerization procedure to synthesize latex stabilized by alkali‐soluble resin (ASR) is detailed. According to this process, latexes with a high solid content and low viscosity are obtained using a substantially lower amount of ASR when compared with existing techniques. Similar rewet properties were found for the latexes obtained by a standard process and for the one obtained by the process described in this work.

The synthesis of cationic mono‐(6‐O‐(1‐vinylimidazolium))‐ß‐cyclodextrin with toluenesulfonate as the corresponding anion is described. Free‐radical copolymerization of the resulting host–guest complex with N‐isopropylacrylamide or N,N‐diethylacrylamide yielded copolymers showing a temperature‐controlled solubility window in water. The impact of different anionic guests and salt concentrations on solubility behavior was investigated via turbidity measurements.

A new concept to build shape memory polymers (SMP) combining outstanding fixity and recovery ratios (both above 99% after only one training cycle) typical of chemically crosslinked SMPs with reprocessability restricted to physically crosslinked SMPs is demonstrated by covalently bonding, through thermoreversible Diels–Alder (DA) adducts, star‐shaped poly(ε‐caprolactones) (PCL) end‐functionalized by furan and maleimide moieties. A PCL network is easily prepared by melt‐blending complementary end‐functional star polymers in retro DA regime, then by curing at lower temperature to favour the DA cycloaddition. Such covalent network can be reprocessed when heated again at the retro DA temperature. The resulting SMP shows still excellent shape memory properties attesting for its good recyclability.

New poly(diphenylacetylene)s with alkoxy and fluoroalkyl groups as electron‐donating and electron‐withdrawing groups, respectively, were synthesized by using a WCl6n‐Ph4Sn catalyst. The polymer solutions emitted strong, bluish‐green lights when photo‐excited. The polymers that contained the electron‐donating alkoxy groups showed longer fluorescence‐maximum peaks when compared to the polymers that contained the electron‐withdrawing fluoroalkyl groups. However, such an effect of the substituent on the absorption property was not clearly seen. The emission bands of the solid films did not show any significant red shift, relative to that of the dilute solution.

Novel poly[(fluorene)‐co‐(2,8‐dioctyldibenzothiophene‐S,S‐dioxide‐3,7‐diyl)]s were synthesized. The octyl group on the 2,8‐dioctyldibenzothiophene‐S,S‐dioxide (DOSO) unit improved the solubility of the polymers and broadened the optical band gap from 2.95 to 3.20 eV as the content of DOSO unit increases. The electroluminescence (EL) spectra of polymers show CIE coordinates around (0.16, 0.07) independent of the ratio of DOSO units in the polymers, owing to the ICT and steric hindrance dual‐function. A high efficiency of 3.1 cd · A−1 (EQE = 3.9%) was obtained with the configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ba/Al. The results indicate that PF‐3,7DOSOs could be a promising candidate for saturated blue‐emitting polymers with spectral stability and high efficiency.
